You can still select the default themes with the u740, Ive seen them on display with the default vz bars/menus and with the "My Desk" flash theme (the one with the briefcase and rounded menus)

Hi, while typing a text message the phone has an options menu... it allows you to implant an emotion GRAPHIC into the text... It has preloaded graphics and animated graphics.

My question is this.... under the option for "preloaded" there is a "downloaded" option. Does anyone know how to downoad new or different emotion graphics and animated graphics. I have gone through get it now, but I cannot figure out where to find more graphics...

TIA

Looking for the fastest way to leave a personal note/message on the phone. I figured out how to voice-type a text message (not very quick), but haven't yet figured out how to voice-text a note. The note options seem to not include voice. Is there a way to speak a note?

Also, is there not some sort of voice recorder note option (all my other phones allowed voice msg/notes)

i think you can record it as a sound. Looks like its only up to a minute.

I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on this phone and upgrade from my E815.

Sorry if I missed it with the hundreds of posts here, but:

1. How is the vibrate? I miss a lot of calls now.

2. Is there an audible missed call alert, or at least a vibrate?

3. How is the signal compared to an 815?

4. Does navigator work with the flip closed?

Thanks kindly!

where would i find the usb drivers for the u740?

Posted by: jkimball08

I found the drivers for the u740 at http://global.mobileaction.com/down...lID=717&go=+Go+
but I cannot get the handset software to work. I am merely looking to be able to charge my phone but that doesn't even work. So I think that these are either not complete or they are not secifically for the u740.

USB cables do not charge the phone unless they are specifically designed to.
I know the original Moto and LG cables do not (though they have a slot in them to plug in a charger) - I don't have the USB cable for my samsung, so I don't know how they do it.

Posted by: themopedwhiz

my ( the wifes ) u740 has the same setup as the LG's

the OEM usb cable ( from the MEK ) has a slot in it to plug in the charger

Posted by: jkimball08

I used to be able to power my Razr and the handset software I downloaded had the charge feature included. Like I said, I don't think the driver is complete. Samsung doesn't even have it on their website!! Thanks!
Cheers

Hey, I just upgraded from the e815 to the u740 (gogo new every 2), and while it's only been three days I'll tell you that I already like it better than the e815.

To answer your question:
1. It's a crapton stronger than the one in the e815. I would get phantom vibrations in my leg where I keep my phone with the e815 because I would have a hard time knowing if the phone was vibrating. Not the case with this phone, its quite strong and you should have no problem feeling the vibration.

2. There are alert sounds for txt, pic, voicemail, and device connect that you can set individually for the tone, vibrate, and reminder. You can turn on both the sound and vibrate if you want (although if the phone is in vibrate mode it just vibrates and makes no sound), also the reminder can be set to once, 2 mins, 5 mins, or off.

3. I haven't had a chance to make/receive many calls yet, but the signal is about the same as the e815 in my area.

4. It seems like the only navigation available with the phone closed is for music using the touch buttons on the front (unless you're talking about some other navigator function I'm not aware of).

Overall I would say go for the upgrade, I'm glad I did thus far.

Compared to the KRZR, the u740 doesn't feel quite as solid. It seems that the KRZR has a metal frame (I may be wrong) while the Samsung has a little more plastic. The hinge is good but there is a little movement when closed but it doesn't seem to be a lot. Personally, I'm willing to sacrifice the feel to have the keyboard.

you actually can view text messages on the fron screen it's the auto view option.you just casn't scroll if the whole message won't fit you have to open to read the rest(to my knowlege)

You can scroll the message on the outside screen using the volume rocker.

1. It's a lot stronger than the e815 vibe (even after the firmware upgrade). I'm satisfied with it.

2. Yes, there is an audible alert immediately after the call gets forwarded to voicemail.

3. I had an e815 before, and (like any phone), I can't really tell by the bars. The u740 seems to show it has less coverage, but voice quality is on par with any other phone I've had. In fringe coverage, the e815 is slightly better in my experience. In areas where my e815 would show 0-1 bars but be able to hold a call with no issue, the 740 also shows 0 bars, occasionally falls in and out of service while I hold it in landscape position texting, but can still hold a call (not dropped) well if I keep it up to my ear. It doesn't beat the e815, but is still pretty good.

4. Nope...only in landscape.

you can scroll. just hit the volume down button on the left side of the phone. it will scroll down.

Posted by: Skadork

i also, upgraded from a e815. My house is in an area where 1 bar is about all you get. The e815 would drop calls CONSTANTLY and sometimes i wouldn't get txt messages until hours after they were sent.

with the u740, I can hold calls if i stay in certain rooms of the house (luckily one of them is my room!!). And in one part of the house i can get two bars I can also go out in the front driveway and get three bars.

I can even get EVDO in patches at the house.

There is no mixed info on this subject.

mp3's and videos (if in stereo) will play over a stereo Bluetooth headset.

mp3's and videos (of any kind) will definately NOT play over a mono Bluetooth headset.

There is no hack, there is no work-around. The headset MUST have the A2DP stereo Bluetooth profile in order to play mp3's or stereo videos

This is how it is with every Verizon Bluetooth phone.

Actually, the songs purchased over the vcast music will play over a mono Bluetooth headset. I'm not sure if they are technically MP3s, maybe WMAs, but they work.

Posted by: tmansgc

But this is all a moot point anyway, because the samsung u740 does NOT support the A2DP bluetooth profile, meaning no bluetooth stereo sound for music or videos.

Posted by: Kentuckychick

Okay, I know I'm going to sound like the dumbest person in the world, but I'll just make it clear right now that I am totally not cellphone savy. At all.

Anyway I just received this phone today and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to complete the activation. I put the battery into the phone and turned it on and it's on the main screen with all the menus (which in and of itself is annoying). The instructions tell me to dial *#### and press send to activate the phone. Okay so I press * and then a number and it puts me into a dang menu. It WILL NOT allow me to dial a phone number and I can't find anywhere on the phone that would allow me to do so and everytime I try I get a message that says I need to activate the phone first.

It's really annoying the heck out of me.
So please someone help...

call *228, option 1.

Accordin ta the verizon rep I was workin with yesterday to fix over 300.00 in misscharged overages that led to an over 500.00 bill they DO sell a blutooth headphone that Does work with their music profiles. This doesnot nessasarily mean stereo but should at least allow noise/music in each ear.Personaly i use a simple earpiece same as for talkin and hear just mono and thats good enuff for me.I plan ta pick up and adaptor from 3.5 to 2.5 and give the headphones a try soon.Never did like the blu tooth anyways.Dunno why just old I guess. If I remember I'll ask specificaly what the #'s are for that set and pass it on.
I am wonderin tho bluetooth wise if I can run bit pim or verizons music profile to the phone useing blue tooth from my p.c. instead of useing the usb cable.I still don't have the cable as yet(too busy) and the future son-in-law has blutooth for his pc to access it from his pda thing.

If you want to put music on the phone, there really is only one way that the vast majority of us do that. We pop the microSD in a card reader and drag and drop.

I don't think the official Verizon software that sync's with WMP will do so over Bluetooth.
You can use BitPim via Bluetooth, but it would take an incredibly long time to transfer that way. The serial BT profile is extremely slow - and I'm not kidding about "extremely". And for me and many others the serial profile will keep disconnecting while trying to transfer a 5MB mp3 anyway. It works fine for ringtones and other small files though (and syncing the phonebook).

Posted by: gclamb

There has been some confusion in the earlier threads.

If you use the little black headset adapter that comes with the phone and have a normal stereo adapter (3-segment prong) to adapt to the size of your headphone jack it will not work in stereo!

The little black adapter needs a four segmented connection stereo male plug 2.5mm size to three segment 3.5mm size female connector for your headset. These jack adapters cost about $10 at Radio Shack and the same or a bit less on-line with shipping.

You end up with the black adapter to the phone, a three inch long adapter from Radio shack (4-prong to 3-prong and size adjustment). makes it a bit bulky...so what.

I'm hoping for a firmware upgrade for the Bluetooth Stereo profile. I'd like it better if the Bluetooth headset came with a noise canceling microphone for motorcycle use (Motorola Bluetooth® Helmet Headset HS830).

I now use the adapter for my full-size Bose Quiet Comfort headset (airline and work headset). If you are unsure of the adapter I'm talking about, you can try the adapter out before you buy using you headset and phone at your local Radio Shack store.

Posted by: Kentuckychick

Thanks for the advice Kopeke

I continued attempting to dial the number for a while and then gave up. The problem was that the phone wasn't allowing me to dial at all (every button I pushed was sending me to different menus on the phone).
I ended up calling this morning and they told me it sounded like a glitch in the phone so I took it to our Verizon store and the guy fixed it pretty quickly. Turned out the last little bit of the initial setup process they do before sending you the phone hadn't been completed (hence why the phone kept telling me to complete the initial processes)... so hey, at least I don't feel so dumb anymore!

Now it's working well and I really do like it a lot. I just need to get some new ringtones!

Has anyone been able to hack Verizon so we can load games?

Posted by: gclamb

I noticed that the MUSIC&TONES, My Music can access the MUSIC LIBRARY and 4. SONGS under OPTIONS can Move the selected song to the External Memory. Under BitPM, Brew/Mod/10889 has an ldb (database file) and songs you load-in from Verizon. I think the lbd file manages the movement and location so that the SONGS directory can find a file to play. When I tried to save the ldb file to examine the database file it prompts you "Access to the file/directory has been blocked on this phone by the phone provider."

A) Is there a way to get access and edit the file?
B) Do we have to purchase the Verizon Music Kit to get the SONGS directory to recognize the new file we want to add to the song listing?

I tried using BitPM to add a Song to the 10889 directory but it does not allow it to be seen by the MUSIC LIBRARY.

My final goal is to add songs that the MUSIC LIBRARY would see that I have on the external memory.

Am I missing something or is there an easier technique? Perhaps the Music Essentials Kit software will setup the library -- I just ordered the cable ,<$9 with shipping and downloaded the software from Verizon.

Posted by: AgeNt B

It's not possible, verizon uses brew and in order to hack games, you need java. Sprint, telus, and bell have java.

Hey guys- sorry if this has been posted/ answered before.

My wife's u740 has been working ok but from time to time it will not receive a text message. She looks at the screen, it says message receieved but then sort of freezes. She is able to hit END then attempt a call, plenty of power and signal, but it won't connect.

She then powers off and back on, then things are normal for a short time. I called *228 option 1 and reprogrammed. All worked well last night. Haven't heard yet today.
What does this sound like?

Thanks!

I'm trying to sign on to my gmail account on the Web 2.0 feature. When I try to type my password, the NumLock key doesn't seem to do anything while I'm typing in the password field. Of course, I can't see what I'm typing because it only echoes stars, but I don't see the NumLock icon at the top of the screen. And my password isn't recognized. Has anybody figured out a way to enter a number into a password field?

Posted by: DaWg1

You have change the setting using the right triangle button and select the letters rather than number.

I've noticed the numlock button does not work in some situations.

If the num lock wont turn on (happens to me sometimes) just push and hold the key with the desired number and after a second or two delay the number will enter.
This works for punctuation too.

If you are in mobileweb, then in a lot of cases the num lock doesn't work - you have to use the right soft key... verizon has a drop down menu with the ABC, abc, 123, symbol options available.

Also, don't forget that the first character typed in any field is translated as being in capitals. You have to type the first character of the password twice, then delete the first instance of the character.

Does anybody have a static problem only when they talk. I get that problem sometimes one minute it sounds good next i'm hearing static with every word are sound on my end.. Also whats the best bluetooth to use because I have a H700 and it sound really bad on this phone.

Posted by: Humpa

The best headsets are the best headsets, irregardless of the phone model.
For BT phones, I have 2 LG's, 2 Moto's, and 1 Samsung. The Moto's have the best range and least static. My U620 seems to have the least range and most static. I got a fair amount of static with my H700 and the samsung - less with the Plantronics, but still more than with my other phones and the Plantronics.

For in and out audio quality in a quiet environment, the Plantronics V510 is stellar. Though I use to just use my H700 because of the simplicity of the on/off boom.
But now I use the Jabra BT8010 because it has an actual real on/off switch as well (previously, this feature was exclusive to a few Moto headsets). It also has a crapload of features, and even has another earpiece that can be plugged in that turns it into a stereo headset (though even with just the one earpiece, it can operate the A2DP profile and play music). The BT8010 sounds nearly as good as my V510, though outgoing audio is not as loud (speaking loudly helps the BT8010 - I like to talk softly, and that works fine too, so long as it is quiet). The BT8010 has better noise cancellation than the Plantronics, and people can hear me even with a lot of background noise if I speak up. The Jawbone has the best noise cancellation, but I don't have one of those and I don't really want one.

That's my brief opinion. But for BT, you really should check out the Bluetooth forum. In my experience, and from all that I've read, you can make a much better BT decision by reading all the opinions in the Bluetooth forum. Don't limit yourself to U740 users, or what people say works with their U740.

I agree with Humpa, but I wanted to point out that I have a H700 too, and I get a fair amount of static depending on my position relative to me phone (and I don't mean distance, I mean rotational position; it's weird). But once I find a good orientation, it's static-free.

Yeah, me too. And I didn't mention this, but getting the phone away from your body helps as well.

Nope - can't get txt messages to the card yet on any Verizon phone. But you can set it to Auto Erase to make sure you don't run out of room for new messages.

Remove the pairing, reboot everything, and re-pair them.
I doubt that will help though.

Next you need to determine if it is your phone or your headset. Try another H700 if you can, or try your H700 with another phone (another U740 if you can).
Or try another headset model, like the Plantronics V510 or BT8010, or another depending on the features you want, etc.

EDIT: which H700 do you have? SYN1311A, B or C? Open the flip and look on the back. There is very small text, and under "H700" and above "Made in China" is the version number. The "A" version doesn't work well with CDMA phones, and Moto will send you a "B" free of charge if it is less than a year old.

Posted by: spawn1980

Yes I am getting static from my SYN1311A BT but the static i'm talking about I hear it without any BT are headphones.

So, you get static from your phone when just using the phone without a headset connected?
If that is the case, bring the phone back.

As to your SYN1311A, if you have the receipt and it is less than 1yr old, then call up Motorola and they'll tell you how to send it in for a replacement. The B version was fixed to work better with a CDMA phone. The A version has very limited range and some static.

I too have had issues with the bluetooth headset static when the U740 is in my pocket. I've used this same headset on other BT phones with not one bit of static.

This is true with my 2 Moto's, 2 LG's, and 1 Samsung Bluetooth phones. But even before Bluetooth, I was using wired headsets exclusively for years. I never used to use a case for my phones, and would just stick them in my pocket. But when I was on a call, I would often pull the phone out of my pocket and hold it in my hand (or place it on whatever surface I was near if I wasn't on-the-go). This is because I would get a better quality of call (and the person I was talking to could hear me more clearly). The body is great at disrupting electronic signals, so moving the phone away from the body will greatly increase the phone's ability to transmit (and receive, but the improvement in transmitting is more dramatic).

Then, when I went to Bluetooth, this phenomenon was even more apparent because there were now 2 transmitters and 2 receivers in my phone (and a transmitter and receiver on my ear).

That being said, some phone's are better than others when it comes to Bluetooth static. Each manufacture has it's own Bluetooth software/drivers it seems. Because the quirks or whatever seem to be common on all phones froma a particular manufacture. My Samsung has the most static (but I find the way the headset connects to be "smoother" - I can't explain it, but I've been using BT headsets for every call for years, and I just like the way the Samsung BT "feels"). My Moto's have the least static and most range (I think?). I used to think my LG's were a little staticy, but I haven't heard any static in weeks. I used to used to use the Moto H700 99% of the time, so perhaps the LG had more static with the H700. I'm now using the Jabra BT8010, and maybe it does better with static. I haven't used the Jabra much with the Samsung. The Samsung is on my second line, and I just haven't used it much lately (I was having reception problems one day in my office building, and ever since I've been hesitant to use the U620 - I used to go back and forth between my LG 9900 and Samsung U620).

Now, the U740 might simply be a little worse than the U620 ... Samsung may not be aware of any issues. Is there anyone with a 740 that doesn't get a lot of static? Has anyone managed to speak to a Samsung tech? A tech that is actually familar with their Bluetooth CDMA phones?

I have and their response was that I did everything to test it out and that unoficially it was something wrong with that model of phone and that I have to wait till verizon comes out with a firmware upgrade because they can't issuse them. I was just hoping that some one found a hack for the bluetooth that would increase the signal as well as allow full access to the phone for file transfers.

If that is the case (which is actually good to hear), then the best you can hope for is info on a particular headset that is just good enough that it diminishes this problem. Or perhaps a work-around that helps (like disabling EVDO, or positioning the phone in a particular manner to minimize whatever RF interference is causing this problem).

Hopefully it is not something like the position of the antenna's/circuitry in the phone itself - because that would be the hardware (though according to the tech, he thinks it is the firmware).

I couldn't find any way to search just this thread so I guess I'll ask the question here.

Is there any plans for a Canadian carrier to pick up this phone, Bell or Telus? This looks like the perfect phone that I have been looking for but afaik CDMA cannot be unlocked and the Samsung D307 just doesn't have everything I'd like

Does anyone know if Verizon had a sale on the phone? I swear I saw it for only $99 and I went into a store today and it was at $179.99. I'm a little disappointed, I am very close to buying it and thought it was a great deal at $99. Guess not though. I live in the san francisco bay area, if that helps.

when i bought mine it had a mail in rebate making it 100 bucks.... dont know if that is still going on.

Hey Wynner3.
Someone just the other day was asking if someone is interested in buying the u740. He frequents this forum quite often and you can also catch him on zaksenterprises.com. On Zaks he goes by the name Jason though. Try pming him here on H.H. forums and I'm sure he'll give you the lowdown.

Is there any way to dismiss the text message being shown in autoview from the front screen without opening the flip? In other words, do you have to open the phone to get back to seeing the clock on the front?

If I understand you correctly, you just have to press the hold button on the left side of the phone for several seconds and the light on the front will come back on.

Verizon has been having wild fluctuations in their sale prices the last few weeks. The VX9400 went from $99 after rebates up to $199, the enV keeps jumping around from $149, to $99 now back to $149 and the u740 was also $99, now it's up to $129.

I don't get it.

Posted by: ElementFire

Preamble: I'm really sorry if someone already figured this out, but I thought I should post it as soon as I confirmed that it works.

Okay, after quite a bit of experimentation, I have discovered that any music in Windows Media Audio (.WMA) format will play on a Bluetooth headset (well, it works on my Motorola H700)!

I used Goldwave to convert the audio, but any audio editor with support for .WMA should work. I saved the file as Windows Audio 9 with 90% VBR. It sounds crappy on the headset, but it sounds flawless through the phone speakers. This is advantageous over MP3, because, well, because you can't even get crappy audio on the headset.

Now to reconvert all the songs on my microSD card...

Posted by: upgradeiscoming

i just bought this on letstalk and it was 99 with a 2 year contract and a 100 dollar rebate with the 4th month bill making it free

Can anyone please tell me if they figured out a way to change the color of the status bars to something other than red, black, or blue with the themes?

They did that with the Motorola Q as well. It was down to $99 and back up to something like $249. Overpriced, crippled phones. yay.

I just got the phone yesterday and have a couple of questions:

Does anyone know if there's a way to have the time on the external screen appear in small fonts at the bottom of the screen? I used to have an LG 8100 and I had the option to display the time and date in small fonts along the bottom banner of the external screen, so I could see the entire wallpaper. With the 740, the external screen is already so small, so the digital clock covers the wallpaper and you can't really see the picture.

And how do you get the picture id to come up on the external screen? I set up picture id but don't see it come up. I also couldn't get the ringer id to work.

Thanks!

I reallllllllly don't want to search through 99 pages of this, but what are the best BT headsets for this phone? Humpa's posts have been saying that there is some sort of glitch w/this phone and BT so I wondered if there are some definitive BT headsets that work real well.

I don't think so. The best headset will work better on this phone than the worst headset, so all the Bluetooth headset info in the Bluetooth forum will still apply. But people are posting that they get a fair amount of static on this phone. I don't think anyone has tried enough headsets to make a determination. And some people's phones might have less of an issue than others.
I'd try the Plantronics V510 ($50). Or the Jabra BT8010 for $100 (which is stereo or mono). At least if you bought one of those, you'd have one of the best headsets, so it isn't like it would go to waste.

Come over and you can try all of mine if you want.

Posted by: hdrazor251

Verizon exchanged my first U740 because it would drop calls when connected to a Bluetooth headset (tried Motorola, LG, and Plantronics). The new U740 had annoying static with Bluetooth (Plantronics) but it was usable. Three weeks ago I bought a Aliph Jawbone after reading about it on Cnet. Perfect sound, no dropped calls, and I can talk in a normal voice!!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but judgeing by the slight impression marks on the screen scratch protection cover on my U-740.The "nubs" by the p key and each of the soft keys (the triangle keys) are to keep the screen/speaker surfaces from touching the key pad when the phone is closed. If this is right it maybe damageing to "cut/sand" those stubs off.

yeah - I have problems with the "p" from time to time too. Guess I can understand why you'd want to get rid of it after-all.

What drives me most crazy with the phone tho - is when I forget that I have num lock on - and I am typing away - only to look at my text and discover I have typed a bunch of symbols and characters, instead of my text.

I still love this phone though!

Posted by: GoatofCMU

Just got this phone today, loving it. I DO have a pretty noobish question though; if the battery is empty (phone still on, blinking empty indicator) will the backlight fail to come on? I drained my battery all the way and had to use it on the road at night, and couldn't use my backlight (keypad, of course). Once I got it home on the charger they seemed to work fine. Is this just a cool battery-saving feature?

I also have one more question for anyone else using free WAP; any way I an decrease the text size on this beast?

If not, then call 611 - that's a data issue (Premium Network Service).

I'm finally posting here for the first time. Greetings!

On the u740, is there any way to make a short .mp3 sound that I have (three second Tony Soprano's cell phone ringtone) repeat itself? Can this be done with .mp3 format files, or another kind of file, or will the phone just not do it, period? Obviously one could edit the sound file on a PC to have it do the Soprano ring a bunch of times in a row and then upload it to the u740, but I'm curious if there's an easier way.

Thanks.

Are you asking because you took a few second long mp3, put it on the phone, and it doesn't repeat? then you have "dead air" until the caller goes to voice mail?

Or have you just not tried it yet?

ALL of the Ring Tones I have/use (MP3, Midi, Yamaha SMAF) which are "too short", do repeat until the call goes to voice mail (aprox 25 seconds or so)...

My tones are listed on -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/V710_Ringers.htm

Thanks Mark_Venture, and I have to say you have a great site with instructions on how to install the Samsung drivers from the VCast download .exe file (which I just used) and of course your collection of ringtones. Kick a-s-s! This all helped me a lot.

Your second guess was right. I have to admit I hadn't tried using added ringtones yet when I posted my question, but I thought I'd try to get an answer first since I didn't come up with one from reading through a bunch of other monster length u740 threads. HowardForums is awesome, but it can be a bit like "Where's Waldo".

So now that everything's working and I've tried some .mp3 files (added them to the phone using Sorrydawgg's instructions in this thread), you were correct. My .mp3 files that are shorter than 25 seconds do automatically repeat, and the ringtone files that are longer than 25 seconds just cut off at about 25 seconds when the call goes into voice mail. This is great! Makes things easy.

Heres a question, I think I know but I have to ask since it is so annoying to me.

I have the phone linked to my bt headset, I only use the headset in the car and sometimes forget to turn off the bluetooth option. If the phone rings I do not have the option of turning on or off the bt and if I hit send to answer noones there - well they are there but not on the handset.

Is there a way to choose bt or handset without having to constantly turn on /off the feature? If it is the headset not the phone any ideas on which headsets have this feature?

This is my first bt headset and I just am not sure which is the problem, the phone or headset.

Thanks

"Connected" is the official term. You pair them once. Then any time you turn on the headset when the phone is in range, they should automatically "connect", and remain connected until you power off the phone, go out of range, or turn off bluetooth power on your phone (or choose the option from your phone to disconnect from the headset).
I'm not sure what you mean by "turn off the bluetooth option". Are you turning off Bluetooth power on your phone? I've never done that on any of my BT phones - there is no significant power drain by leaving Bluetooth on.

If your BT headset is off, then the call audio will be thru the phone's earpiece and mic. If your BT headset is on (and connected to your phone), then the audio will be thru your BT headset.

Are you saying that you leave your headset "on", but after a while it disconnects from the phone? Like it disconnects but the phone still thinks it is connected? If so, then that sounds like a problem with your headset or your phone. This may simply be a bug with the u740 (it seems to have some BT bugs or abnormalities anyway, judging from some of the posts I've read). One solution would be to turn off the headset inbetween calls. This is how I have always done it anyway - that's why I choose a headset that has an actual on/off switch so I can simply flip the switch when the phone rings, and by the time I get the headset on my head it is connected to the phone (and depending on the headset, it will also pick-up/answer as soon as it is connected).

Thanks for replying - actually you answered my question - I have been turning on and off the bluetooth option on the phone not the headset (my bad) I think that should do the trick. I have the H500 Moto cheapy I bought to try for my first headset. I think I will upgrade to one with an on/off switch.

I knew there had to be a better way than what I was doing.

there are only a couple with an on/off switch. And no one but me seems to give a crap about that anyway.

But the Jabra BT8010 has an on/off switch (and also is stereo if you plug in the second earpiece, or you can use it as a normal headset on just one ear).
And some of the Moto's have a on/off switch - the H700 has the best switch out there - the flip boom mic. But the H700 is rather poor with it's outgoing mic audio. It is satisfactory, and I used mine exclusively for about a year, so it depends on your needs/expectations (it probably sounds the same as your h500 - nothing great, but good enough for most).

The Bluetooth forum (found on the hofo main page) is the best resource for info on headsets ...

EDIT: oops, I forgot that they left off BT stereo on the U740

YOu really only need to turn the BT headset off when not using it if you want to "save battery" on the headset...

I have a cheap old Moto HS820 (similar to your H500)... I leave both the headset and the phone's BT powered on all the time.

I made a thread but apparently, no one wanted to read it ;( and this seems to be the 'hot spot' so here it goes...

I just got this phone (u740) and the first day it was fine. I could log onto AIM, although it only showed 2 of my buddies online, even though there were about 30. How do I fix this to see all groups/available buddies.

And now a few days later I can't sign onto the mobil IM at all anymore. I get a message saying "did not receive response from IM server. Select wait to continue waiting or sign off" I've tried waiting, reinstalling, singing off then on. It won't let me connect.

thanks for any advice guys

This is a "function" of AIM. The first time you log in, you should notice a "Mobile Contacts" group appear on your AIM Buddy list (on your computer). There can only be 30 contacts in there, and these are the 30 people you can have on your buddy list on Mobile IM.

Can someone comment on the "Mobile Email" application?

http://products.vzw.com/index.aspx?...ails&appId=5833

I want to understand how browsing emails or sending emails consumes your minutes. If I browse 5 new emails for example, and it takes 5 minutes to do this (reading through them), does it really use 5 airtime minutes?

I appreciate any info anyone may have. Thanks.

Yes when you are connected using browser.

I was talking to a cell phone guru and they made this suggestion. Unpair the bluetooth. They when you re-pair then, have the phone and bluetooth far apart. I was told this will make a stronger pairing. I tried it and it does seam to work.

Yeah, that makes no sense, but then again I'm no Bluetooth guru.

According to all the posts about the Bluetooth static problem, I'd say there is an inherent problem with the 740. There is even some reported confirmation from a Samsung tech. I have no idea what the problem is, but I would move on to another phone. Perhaps a firmware upgrade could fix it, but what if it is a design flaw? Like the placement of the antenna's or some other hardware issue?

If you like the looks of the phone, by all means keep it. Lots of people like it, so it must at least work decently otherwise. But I'd recommend a good phone like the 9900 - sure it isn't as cool as the 740, but for a slight increase in size you get about the best phone Verizon has to offer.

I am sure its been answered but so many pages to find some pretty simple answers
First i will be getting my u740 with a Americas choice select family share plan soon and was just wondering how i would go about Instant messaging I did read and it says free IM text and pic messages now for the question part are any airtime minutes used while using mobile IM?

Second lets say i use VZ Navigator once in a bluemoon, i know its not included in the select plan, what will be the charges?

Posted by: Rizon

You use minutes to sign on to Mobile IM (and possibly signing off). Sending and receiving messages will be covered by the unlimited texting included on the Select Plans.

As for VZNavigator, unless you get the VCast Pak with unlimited data ($15/month), it will use minutes.

I've been reading that the VZNav no longer uses any minutes at all, as of July.

Yes there is.
While you are typing a text, go to Options > Edit Text Format
There is an option for "Size" in there.

Thanks for the tip., however as far as I can tell there is no way to save as default, so you would have to set this up everytime you text. Kinda defeats the purpose if you are having troubles seeing. It is a cool option though.

hey guys i have had this phone for at least 3 days now and it has never touched the 4th bar of evdo at all.

even comparing my mother's vx8300, she get all full bars both on evdo and 1x. I only get 3 bars for evdo and 4 bars for 1x.

is this a glitch or something? should i be worried about this?

My U740 doesn't get as good of reception as my Moto E815, LG enV, Moto V3C, Samsung U620...

BUT it does get better reception than my LG Chocolate....

I'm having a couple issues with my phone.

#1 Sometimes the phone randomly resets my wallpaper to default.

#2 When I flip the phone horizontal, the phone displays in everything vertical.

Anyone else have similar problems? Should I take advantage of my insurance and get a new phone?

Posted by: DaWg1

It should be under warranty -- take the phone back to the VZW corporate store.

I don't have either of these issues with my phone. You should try taking it back to verizon.

yes i sometimes had that problem but sometimes it is becuase when you flip it it doesnt close all the way i myself have the gold one and used the insurance to get a black one and do not have that problem with the screen anymore.

also the wallpaper being set to default sometimes can happen if you have all your pictures set to your memory card, and when you take out the card it sets the main wallpaper to default. try setting that wallpaper you want as a screensaver using your phone memory not your card

I have had the phone about two months and really love it. I didn't use it too much the first month because of other issues [not with the phone] but I'm really enjoying it!

One question though- I know if you have the phone open horizontally it will be on speakerphone, and then you can close it, still on speaker phone, and then open it vertically and it will be regular phone. Is there a way to make it go from vertical/regular phone to horizontal speaker phone without ending the call?

I've had this phone now for a few months and i've been playing around with settings and everything

I'm wondering if there's a way to get OBEX functionality working on the u740 so music and pictures can be sent through bluetooth... I've looked through all of the hidden menus including the one that contains SYSINFO and USERPREFS but i can't seem to find any variables that would help to enable this function

does anyone know anything about this? that would be a great help

yes - if you hold down the speakerphone button on the side of the phone (the side that also takes in memory cards) while you are speaking vertically, you can then close it and open it up horizontally without losing the call

Has anyone had any luck with a battery operated travel charger? I haven't found one that fits the U740 including Energizer's for Samsungs

[QUOTE=gclamb]There has been some confusion in the earlier threads.

I'm hoping for a firmware upgrade for the Bluetooth Stereo profile. I'd like it better if the Bluetooth headset came with a noise canceling microphone for motorcycle use (Motorola Bluetooth® Helmet Headset HS830).

we can always hope for the stereo bluetooth upgrade! you'd think it'd be easy. thanks for the other adapter information.

The only way to get a brew game/app is through Get It Now - this is nothing new.

There are no Bluetooth hacks.

And to get java, you have to do what AgeNt B just said - and that is get a Sprint, Telus, or Bell phone.

Thanks everyone for the great information. I've read over 70 pages of this thread. No, I'm not anal ... or I would have read them all.

I'm very serious about purchasing this phone, but as usual, I want to know more. I've got a couple of odd questions that relate to how I use my phone. I'm a pilot and often work odd hours. It's really nice on my Nokia 6255i to be able to have the phone on vibe or even another setting I use a lot where it only lights up (almost everything turned off in a profile), but the alarm set to a pleasant melody still audibly/and vibe alarms. That way I'm not woken up by someone calling, but my alarm always works and I don't have to remember to do anything special to my phone.

what programs work in portrait and which ones work in landscape? can you read a txt in portrait and just to confirm with auto read txt enabled you can read it on the small outside screen?

I have only read two mac comments both having trouble connecting. anyone running OSX 10.4.11 that can help with connectivity. i read it doesn't have something allowing connectivity with most computers. OBEX? I thought it had OBEX, is it turned off? is there a way around this. software or flash or c+ program? has anyone gotten bt to work pc or mac for syncing contacts, calendar, email? I thought someone said the sync with BT was worthless for large files because of sync speed, can this be changed?

Humpa, I have read a ton of your posts in the last 30 pages of posts. I am predominantly more interested in data transfer with my BT than the headset pairing. Are there really no hacks to change the function of BT at all? has vzw crippled the bluetooth on this phone? is there a way to update it to the A2dp profile? might this come in a later update for the phone? Would it be better to wait for an Unlocked version of this phone to surface? Humpa, again I know you have said that you can only unlock a GSM phone, but my CDMA 6255i IS unlocked. I bought it that way and have been using it with vzw for 2+ years.

Humpa, thanks for all the great BT headset connectivity information.

Are the 3.5 and 2.5 jacks about 3/8 to 1/2 in apart (can't remember exactly? If so, this sounds like an aviation transcever connection where one is input (2.5) and the other is output 3.5. Can someone confirm this?

TIA,
Kenny

Looking for pro/con on the u740 versus the enV, not a bash on one or the other. Recently purchased the enV two days ago and am a little dispointed in the call quality coming from the e815, also not sure if I like the candy bar versus the flip that I am used to.

Please give me your thoughts/experience on these phones. Mostly intrested in the following:

Call reception
Call clarity
Battery life
Speakerphone
Speakers for music
Texting difficulty (smaller keyboard then the enV?)
Anything else

TIA!!

Since you posted in the 740 thread, you are apt to get results favored towards the 740. Though I don't see how. The enV wins in all those categories, plus every other.

Posted by: shadowguy

Except for size. The u740 is a tiny little thing, no bigger than a razr.

Posted by: GoatofCMU

Also, the u740 has gotten me more girls' numbers than my boss' iPhone :nerd

Posted by: shadowguy

And the u740 gets more attention than any other phone I have owned. People become mesmerized by the dual flip.

Posted by: fire_flyer

I agree with Humpa that the enV is a better phone from the functionality standpoint. It basically works better in all categories, but it's a big phone to me. I didn't want to carry around another brick. So I went with the U740 so I could have a RAZR sized phone with the qwery keyboard. The keyboard is small and it's taking some getting used to, but i like it. As mentioned it this thread earlier it doesn't support Bluetooth stereo. Let me rephrase since the literature says it supports BT stereo, it supports BT stereo but plays it in mono.

my (limited) opinions:
-sound clarity is really good.
-speaker phone is ok weaker then I had hoped.
-speakers ok for sharing sounds with people, but i'll stick with my ipod (i know i'm carrying two devices, but my ipod sounds great, is integrated into my car stereo and i can use my steering wheel controls- i just love that)

For example, I have been trying to add something simple such as "Haha".

Hey guys. Instead of spending a small fortune to install a bluetooth system into my car I was wondering if anyone could recommend a GPS unit with bluetooth hands free system that will be fully compatible with my SCH-u740. I would like to have voice activated dialing and be able to integrate my contacts list. I've already tried the Magellan Maestro 4040 to no avail. Speaker would work, but I couldn't get contacts to sync. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I did some searches and didn't find any and I imagine I may be wrong since I hope I'm not the only one who questions this.

Has anyone found a way to DISMISS the alarm from the outside of the phone rather than having it automatically SNOOZE when you touch a button when the phone is closed? It's pretty much impossible for me to open the phone without touching anything to dismiss the alarm when I'm waking up and I end up making it Snooze instead.

im almost sure the speakerphone button will do the trick for snoozing the alarm....

I'm actually looking for a way to dismiss the alarm rather than snooze it...or are those the same things?

if so,
i want the alarm to turn off for the remainder of the day with a button from the outside of the phone.

thanks for the input though.

yeah i think it dismisses it too... im not sure since my speakerphone button hasnt been working for a long time now?! =/

Posted by: themopedwhiz

why leave it closed when sleeping ?

leave it open, then hit the dismiss soft key, then close it if you must

I leave it open so the alarm will be loud and so i can hit the dismiss button, and if somebody calls , its on speaker phone, i don't even have to pick it up to talk to them.

Posted by: litobirdy

actually, when you leave it open and you receive calls or alarm sounds, they are all much lower. Which is weird. I dont get it. But yes closed is better if you want it louder. Try it now. call urself with it closed and open and tell me if you hear the massive difference.I leave mine open for the alarm so i can just hit the OK to snooze for 5 mins then i can get up.

Unless im doing it incorrectly, I believe all it does is snooze it. Tried this morning and it went off again 5 minutes later.

As far as leaving my phone open...does the backlight stay on? If so, I'm not sure I like it being on all night every night...

I've noticed the front screen's backlight stays dimmed when I have it on my charger. I should check to see if there is a setting to change that.

Posted by: kloveloc

If you want to use outside buttons to turn off alarm you can set calendar reminder instead of alarm and when you hit the outside buttons it turns off without any further reminders rings.

Posted by: fire_flyer

Hey everyone,

I've got what seems to be a silly problem and the answer is not obvious to me.

the u740 has two different sized fonts; Normal and Large. Since I got the phone the large font is what I see when I dial. I've gone into the menu and changed to Normal, no change the letters are still 1" tall. So then I switched back to Large, no change. Back to Normal, shut off phone, restarted, no change.

Sorry for the simple question. Any help is appreciated.

I liked the enV, I just couldn't deal with the form factor, I felt like I had a brick attached to my hip as I wear my phone in a holster on my belt during the work week. I wanted to stay with a QWERTY keyboard and I previously did not give the U740 a fair chance in getting used to the keypad.

It sure is nice to have a small slim phone, WOW! I also like the flip, I found it uncomfortable talking on the enV (candy bar) and the sound quality always sounded a little muddy to me, maybe that is an Lg thing? My wife really likes the candy bar style and thinks the sound quality is pretty good on the enV. We both just came from Moto e815's.

I give the Sammy a big thumbs up on style, form factor and a much cleaner and clearer sound over the enV...at least to my ears!

I went ahead and the the Garmin C580 and it's fully compatible with the the voice activated BT hands free feature. I'm really surprised how well it works. People say it doesn't even sound like I'm using a speaker phone.

Very simple, just convert your mp3 to WMA and it will play over any kind of bluetooth headset you may have

How did you do this with your bluetooth headset on, to be able to read your text message from the front screen.

Posted by: SamsungGuy2

Because I was pushing the button to make a call and didnt realize i had a message..When i looked at my phone because i wasnt getting the prompt to make a phone call and noticed that the message had been open and i could read it from the front screen...So i think the button on my headset acted like the ok button on my phone

Question 1: nope - not customizable or hackable
Question 2: No, not really. For Bluetooth headset info, the best place is the main Bluetooth forums right here at HoFo. There still is no perfect headset, so it depends on your usage. Though that headset is fairly popular. The Plantronics V510 is still considered by many to be the best for audio quality. The jawbone is the best for noise cancellation. And the jabra BT8010 is also popular because of its features. And if you like a normal/quick on/off button, the BT8010 and some of the Moto's (the flip boom ones) are popular choices.

I have had the phone since early June, and I love it.

But recently when I put a picture as my background, it will stay for a little bit and then out of nowhere if I close the messages folder or just open my phone, the default background will pop up. Sometimes my chosen background picture lasts for hours, sometimes minutes.

Am I the only one with this problem? Should I take it to Verizon?

1) I saw a sign outside a Crickett store the other day that said they flash phones to the Crickett network..I stopped in and asked them if they thought they could do it with my u740 and they said they were Pretty sure they could.

Has anyone had their phone flashed to another CDMA(Crickett is CDMA) network? I'm sick of paying out the ears for VZW. (Thanks to Zaks I went way over my mins w/ txting and mobile web.. whoops.

2) Anyone ever heard of J2ME? Its supposed to be a Java emulator for CDMA phones.. HP made this program years ago and it disappeared and I can't find it anywhere... anyone seen it or know anything like it?

3) Flashing the phone to JAVA. So, I've done ALOT of research and I think I figured out that the u740 was actually released in Japan before it came here.. AND it was a JAVA phone!!! Of course, I can't totally be sure 'cause most of the sites are in Japanese and Google won't translate the sites.

Would someone that knows Japanese do us all a big big favor and see what they can find out about this? If you're willing I could probably come up with some sites for you to look at... just PM me.

I've seen this happen on mine if the picture is on the SD card and not in the phone memory. And/or if the pic is in your phone memory perhaps it's the picture. Some jpegs I transferred to the phone don't display.

Do you have the Backup Assistant installed? Mine does the same thing, perhaps it's that.

Quick question does any have a blue screen during calls on the outter front screen...its jus blue and doesnt show the time or anything is it suppose to be like that??

Posted by: Jr5167

After breaking the second plastic holster in a week, I decided to try the horizontal-carry case I used for my e815. I noticed that the phone lit up when it was in the case. Thinking that I could just trim any offending pleather from the case, I checked to see if there was a fit-issue.

I found out that the light comes on (apparently) because of the magnet used to keep the base shut. Just moving the phone near it will illuminate the screens/keypad.

what are you trying to login to? Are you talking about Mobile Web/WAP? If so, then the page you are trying to view is too large. There is a limited amount of onboard memory allocated to the openwave browser - there is no fix/hack for that.

This is a strange question, but I'll throw it out there:

How do people hold their phone while talking on it? I just got the u740 and there is a sticker on the base which says

"Internal Antenna Area - For best performance, Do NOT touch this area when using your phone."

The problem is this is the only place it feels right to hold the phone! I just don't see how I can avoid that area seeing as it's on the bottom of the phone, right where you hold it.

What do you guys do?

Posted by: tsturbo

Just change how you would normally hold it. I used to hold my e815 from the bottom and now I hold the U740 from the sides, just takes a couple of days to get used to it and all is well.

Posted by: ort5

Thanks, tsturbo. That's what I'm trying to do, and it's slowly working. It's harder to do in landscape mode though!

Posted by: digitaldept

Anyone know how to remove the original plastic faceplate on the 740? I would like to do some airbrushing on it.
Thanks

You wouldn't be able to - You can go from full bars to 1 bar and not "notice" any difference. The only true test you can do is look at the actual readings in the service menu while holding the phone in various postitions.

Posted by: GoatofCMU

I guess the obvious followup is: if there's no difference in call quality between one and four bars, who cares. Either way, I don't notice a difference either. For the record, I usually hold it on the sides. Occasionally I'll do the "crossover" where my right hand is holding it from the bottom up to the left ear, and there's nothing wrong with it, I've noticed.

There isn't much call-quality difference between 1 and 4, but there is a HUGE difference between no service and 1.

Posted by: GoatofCMU

Yea, that's pretty obvious. I guess the point is if you're going from 4-1 and you know you'll always have that 1 then it doesn't make a whole lot of difference. The only reason I'd oblige to the rule is if I knew I was in an area that didn't give me good service to begin with, like my dorm lobby.

I thought that was because of certain unrecognized characters in the name of the track. Try renaming the mp3 file.

no it does it for every single song...no matter what the name is. on any other mp3 player, the id3 tags are all right. only when i use the u740 is there a problem.

have had the same problem... forgot how i fixed it last time... but now am dealing with it again.. i remember deleting some of the files at a time and then renaming them in another folder and then pasting them back and forth in the tflash.. be sure to put the tflash in the phone and starting my music between every time you delete files from there so that it removes those files and hopefully when they are reentered, they appear properly..

Is there any way to save picture on the phone cars without having them show up on the "my pictures" section. I have some pictures that I dont want everyone who picks up the phone to be able to see.

I want to have the pictures on the micro sd card, but not show up in 'my pictures' unless I wanna view them on "my pictures" So I guess Im asking if theres a way to hide them...lol

Posted by: themopedwhiz

NO, sorry, no hidden folders, no passwords, nothing..

this question comes up, about once a month.

for that you need a PDA smartphone, with windows mobile OS

Well crap...that sux...I guess Ill take out the micro card before Im with anyone I dont want to see my pix...But thanks for the quick reply

Looks like some pretty bad damage. I would venture to say it's unrepairable. It would probably cost more to fix than replace.

I set the phone to Auto Answer so that when I am driving my bluetooth answers automatically, but when the blue tooth is not connected, I want the be able to answer when I flip open....was able to do this on my Moto 815.

Can this be done? It is very annoying to have to press the phone key to answer if it on auto answer.

Thanks.

yes, you can set it to both auto answer (hands free) and swivel to answer ... and it works.

Swivel?? Humpa, u got U470 on the brain???

I thought you didn't get a U740... I know you got the U470... but this is the 740 thread...

On the U740... Menu -> Settings & Tools -> Call Settings -> Answer Options...

You can set as... Flip Open, Any Key Answer, Send Only, and "auto answer"...

To be honest.. I don't recall what "auto answer" does...

I set mine on either Send Only (so I have to hit the send key).. OR Flip Open (so it answers when I flip it open...)

Auto answer automatically answers the call when I have the bluetooth headset on. That way, when I am driving, I don't have to press anything...it just answers. It doesn't automatically answer unless the BT headset is on. What I had on my E815 was when autoanswer was set, but BT was not on, it was answer on open flip....the U740 doesn't do that....I have to press send to answer

Sorry, u470, u740, you know? I thought this was the u470 thread. I don't have the u740, so I don't know.

Whats is the best map application to use on the U740. I just switched from sprint to verizon and had been using a google maps application that worked great on my sanyo. It was easy enough to use that u could drive and use the map at the same time (not that i recomend that). It was my favorite feature. Now i'm lost when trying to use the slow moving web maps and I don't want to pay verizon for their navigator.

Welcome to Verizon!

Verizon locks down their phones tightly. VZNaviator is it.

On the old LG's, when VZW first started disabling MP3 and using only WMA, there was a way to get the MP3 player to play MP3 and a way to get it to have different modes like 3D sound, surround sound, pop, rock, etc.

I know that the u740 has the playing MP3 capabilities but what about the 3d sounds, surround sound, pop, rock etc? I think the proper term is equalizer settings but not exactly sure. I can't find a code for this option.

THanks, V.

The U740 is *still* not on Bitpim's phone list yet. Is there no one who can afford to donate a U740 to the coders over there? I'd do it if I had the money to spare (argh, debt!). At least I've gotten ringtones onto the phone using "filesystem" in bitpim, but it's a big pain in the rear.

Why not get one off eBay and throw it on the credit card to send to them? What's a little more debt, and think about the pain in the rear you will be solving.

I've been waiting awhile for bitpim to support the u740, still hoping
