I have a problem putting ringtones onto the phone. I don't tranfer through a usb cable to the phone. Instead, I have the card and a card reader. I think this way is more simple. Anyway, when I plug the card reader into the computer and open it up, there are folders for mp3s, pix, flix, and sounds. But none for ringtones. I've dragged the mp3 onto there and that worked fine, so no problem there, but I'm not sure how I can get ringtones onto it. Can anyone help? Sorry if this question was answered already

either email them to your phonenumber@vzw3g.com or get a usb cable ... they are not stored on the card, nor can you get them from the card to the phone (though if you put them in the my_sounds folder on the card, you could send them to your self in a message - my_sounds can only be used as attachments to messages).

I currently use a Moto e815 with free WAP (my own http proxy) and unlocked BT (dun, obex).
I am considering switching to the u740 for the landscape web.
I love it on my e815 but hate how hacked up the pages look.
It's the same Openwave browser, right?
Is it any better on the landscape screen vs a portrait screen?
My NE2 is up and other than this phone, I dont see any reason to leave my e815 right now.
Comments anyone?
Thanks.

Posted by: themopedwhiz

the difference between the portrait mode e815 and the landscape mode 740 is very **** little, I would not switch phones for that reason alone,

for the keyboard, yeah, or the video but not the web display

think about a phone with a bigger display, venus or enV

or better browser LG 10000 or bb pearl

but the last (2) choices will cost you more per month because of data plan chnages & charges

NO mou wap on those those (2) phones

Is it just me or are ringtones capped at 5? If I try to add any more than 5 they simply don't show in the list.

Don't know why you are having that problem - I have added 57 ringtones (all show in the list) plus all the default ringtones that vzw instists we have.

Maybe they weren't formated properly for the phone. From my experience this phone supports mp3 and wma ringers. But I haven't been able to get midi's to work.

Posted by: paulieg68

can you get ringtones without downloading them, like sending them or something w/out a card or anything?

Paul

Posted by: themopedwhiz

what do mean by downloading ?

you do NOT have to buy from verizon vcast

but it takes work to get your own tones on the phone

there are several HOWto threads that explain this

I have a TomTom 510 gps device. It won't do the Bluetooth synch with my new u740. Other phones will synch with it, including my old A950 which only had headset and handsfree Bluetooth profiles. My daughter's u740 won't synch to it either, which indicates to me that there's something in the u740 software or firmware that won't synch to this unit. When I put the u740 Bluetooth in Discovery mode and tell the gps device to look for phones, it sees the phone, but then it says "An error occureed while checking phone features". Anyone have any ideas on how to get them to synch? I called both Samsung and TomTom; no one there had a clue.

Posted by: paulieg68

i mean dowloading like getting from verizon. im tired of paying money for ringotnes. i do not have an sd card for my phone either. is there a way to do it like e-mailing or sending it to my phone? i have tried many different ways. sending them through verizon as a pic message with the sound and it gets messed up. they must be doing something to it when it sends. emailing it doesnt work. i cannot find a threead that shows me that. if you find one please send it to me.

Posted by: EdgeCrusher36

Ok, I posted this in the FAQ thread for this phone too, and figured I would here too. This is on the topic of emailing the ringtone to you.

Quote:
Ok. Im not having any luck with it. Ive reduced the mp3s down in size to a 20 second clip. I changed it to .mid and used .mp3 too. I tried to email it to my phone number with the address shown. Got nothing sent to my phone. I got a micro SD card, put the file on there as both .mid and .mp3. The mp3 shows up and plays, but not as a ringtone. The .mid doesn't show up at all, in my sounds folder or my music folder. What can I do about this besides getting a usb cable?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hmmm...I get 30 total, about half of which are the crappy defaults. Did you use bitpim or the email method? I hate that I have a 2 gig card and can only hold 30 ringers and about 60 texts. Lame.

I used phonezoo and emailing to myself with decent success, but I haven't received them to my phone for the past month or so.

I wanted to buy the Voyager, but I know im not willing to pay the $25 for VCast package etc, because all I really "need" is phone and texting capablities.

This phone seems to be good for that.......is this the only phone that VZW offers that has the qwerty keyboard like this?

Look into the enV. They've dropped the price to 99 buck, and it's an excellent phone.

Hi folks and thanks for all the great info. In post 1495 the question was asked about the next generation of this phone.

I love this phone, but I'm reluctant to buy technology that is already a year old because in Verizon years that's an eternity.

I'll go to the Samsung Showroom today on the off chance that they show me something in the works.

However, has anyone heard anything about the next gen?

Thanks,
A

Regarding using SD card for ringtones, Klay wrote:
Quote:
Yes, the phone doesn't even require dummy files, it is very easy to add
ringtones from the memory stick here is another example of a index file
with one ringer from the phone and one from the memory stick.

/ff/brew/mod/mr/back like that.mp3|0|3.mmc1/ringers/beep.mp3|0|3.

beep.mp3 is on the memory stick and
back like that.mp3 is on the phone.

You can just have a folder on your memory stick filled with files, all you
need to do is make your index file.

I will work on making a simple program to automate the task.
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...7&highlight=mmc

this doesnt work for me.

has anyone been able to get a u740 to read a ringtone off
of the SD card (ie, have it appear in MyRingtones) using:
mmc1/ringers/beep.mp3|0|3
in the /brew/mod/mr/mrinfo.db file?

on my u740, ive tried every combination of:
mmc1/<DIR>/beep.mp3|0|3
/mmc1/<DIR>/beep.mp3|0|3
mmc1/<DIR>/beep.mp3|0|5
/ff/mmc1/<DIR>/beep.mp3|0|3
where <DIR> is: My_MP3s or my_sounds

and after the reboot, my u740 still doesnt recognize a
ringtone from the SD card when showing its list of ringtones.

i dont have direct access to the card so i cant
create a ringers directory, as in Klay's example,
on the card to test that (yet). (getting a card reader soon.)

is the "ringers" directory on the card crucial? (ill know in
a week when my card reader comes in the mail; good to
know now though)

anyone have any ideas/answers?

I'm wondering about the reliability for the u740. My wife and I are up for NE2 tomorrow, and we're looking in that direction. When we were in the store the other day and playing with the phone, the hinge mechanism didn't seem all that solidly constructed. After two years of flipping it back and forth (especially with one hand, so that it quickly flips open instead of using two hands and being gentle with it) I wonder what sort of condition that hinge will be in. I know the phone has only been released for a short while, but does anyone have any thoughts?

It's solid enough in my opinion. I've had mine for a couple months now, haven't seen any extra play in the hinge.

Ripple almost completely asks my question below, but I have one other issue that I was wondering about: I use my current phone (e815) as a PC modem, to access the 3g network...it only costs me minutes to do so (i.e., I do not have a data plan, nor do I need one).

Has anyone successfully used the u740 to do this? Use the cellphone as a bluetooth modem, so I can just use my laptop's fully-functional webbrowser instead of "mobile web" when I have my laptop with me, without paying for a data plan?

You can tether illegally on every Verizon phone, AFAIK.
BTW, it is against your TOS - even on your E815 it is agaist your TOS.

Posted by: mleeber

I have had the u740 for about 9 months now. The phone is nice, works well for the most part, and is easy to use as a phone and a messaging device. The bluetooth range stinks, causing static when the phone is more than 3 feet from my Moto H700 or my Plantorics Discovery. I must say though that once my 2 year prison term is up I will not be renewing with Verizon. I came from t-Mobile after 10 years with them because I had spotty service at home. Verizon charges for absolutely everything. Verizon controls access to all phone functionality so they can charge extra for everything but making calls. As GSM providers T-Mobile and AT&T have the best phone selection and I can load a third party program on one of their phones without being charged a fee.

If you are considering Verizon I would check out T-Mobile and AT&T first, in that order, and seriously consider using one of them instead.

That isn't true at all!

While in portrait just hold the button on the right side of the phone for a second and it toggles it on/off.

EDIT: Oh you may have meant that in landscape the speakerphone can not be turned off.

Only had this phone for few days, coming from the moto e815 (great phone btw).

I use vibrate mode almost exclusively and i also use my phone as my alarm clock... on the e815 I could keep the ringer on vibrate and still my alarm would ring in the mornings when I need to get up... with this phone I can't seem to do that... have to remember to put it back in normal mode before going to bed or my alarm will only vibrate... it also makes it difficult to ignore phone calls after I go to bed because now the phone will ring if someone calls... I find this a major inconvenience.

Re: alarm, on my 815 I could hit a side button and the alarm would snooze, to turn it off I opened the phone and it opened straight into alarm menu and gave the option to turn it off (literally disarmed the alarm). With 740 if I hit a side button it snoozes the alarm, but when I open the phone I have to move through all the menus to get to the alarm menu and then turn it off (disable rather than snooze).

Re: Alarm, on the plus side (I think, still trying to get used to it), the alarms are more functional... can set one up for M-F only. Also, when I disable the alarm each morning, it is still active for the next day.. with 815 I have to re-enable it each night...

I also find the interface more cumbersome that on the 815... I could flip that open, hit the menu key and then the number keys for what I wanted without having to use arrow keys to move to the menu I want and then use number keys.. for example, to get to my alarm menu on 815 I opened phone, hit menu, 8, 5 and would be there... now I have to open phone, arrow over to setting & tools, 4, 3. I know I could set up a shortcut but I think there are only 4.

Also, can I set up a shortcut to Bluetooth menu? Can't find that as one of the shortcut options.. on 815 I set up a shortcut to that menu and could quickly turn it on and sync with my headset.

Been using the Jabra bt250v with 815 and have to say it is clearer and less crackly than the 740.

really cool phone though, and has alot of features packed into a very nice pkg. Just have to figure out what I can get used to and what functions are really important to me.

Quick question: what kind of pouch/holster are you using? I have a generic pouch that I used for my 815... love it, but it must be a bit stretched out because with the 740 in it, when someone calls, the vibration doesn't transfer to my hip like it should.. the phone itself seems to have an adaquate vibratation, so I'm thinking I need to get a holster or a new pouch that holds the phone more rigidly so the vibration transfers to me better.

You can set up a hotmail address, an aol address, and a yahoo address on
mobile web so you can log into each without having to relog in each time
you check it.

With mobile email you can save the hotmail, aol, and yahoo, plus your work,
if you can get to your work email on the regular net, but most all VZ phones
can be set up like this.

I got it synced via Bluetooth to BitPim and its telling me that the file system is locked. Damn Verizon . Is there any way to remove this so i can put ringers on here for her?

Go to settings and tools, display settings, and backlight. In backlight go to
keypad and you can choose how long the backlight stays on. Just keep in mind that always on drains your battery fairly quick.
The manual is at samsung.com.....

This will happen if you are NOT accessing the correct folder because BitPim does respect/adhear to Brew folder Locks/limits.

On the U740, the /brew/mod/mr is NOT blocked and that is where ring tones go. Its where I've used on mine for some time...

Unless VZW put out a firmware upgrade that BLOCKS this folder and I don't know it about it??

See also -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/U620-Bit1.htm (written to be a generic guide to adding ringtones via the FileSystem feature of BitPim, so it points you to FILE LOCATIONS PAGE to learn what folder to use)

Same problem. Anyone have a fix for this?

Posted by: satinsilverk20a

I am having a problem with my phone. I used the Vcast music manager to upload a song or two to my internal memory (yes i plan on getting a card, i just wanted to see the mp3 player quality) The first song worked fine, I then went and deleted it from the software, and re-uploaded it and another song. I left my house and later on that night I tried to play it and I got an error saying it couldn't play. I deleted them again and reuploaded, the song played but then I got an error again. This time when i synched it windows popped up asking me if I wanted to browse the phone. So i did and I got the 60mb drive, then inside was a music folder, and then inside that two folders each having the songs in them. they were seperated in folders instead of just mp3's. well ******* me deleted the folders and ever since then the phone does not recognize mp3's being uploaded. It see's that they are taking up space, but they do not show on the phone or in the vcast. Problem is the phone's memory is full now, yet I cannot delete the files.

In bitpim under other cdma I am able to see where the MP3's are stored, but do not have access to them. They dont show on the phone, they dont show in the software, yet they show in bitpim and also show in memory info. I would assume something went bad with the idb.db file? Could it have something to do with the ringtone's I've added? I've run out of ideas. I guess it was caused by me deleting the files inside the music device window windows gave me, but how can that be? arent they still mp3? wouldnt samsung be sure to have windows NOT see it as a portable device so poeple dont go in and delete like I did? is there any frekin way to do a hard reset on this phone?! gah!

here are some screen shots, I REALLY hope someone can help, looks like I might be going to the verizon store today :/

Posted by: themopedwhiz

put the first song back in

make ALL deletions, moves, removals etc..... on the phone using phone menus

do NOT use any PC software to delete 'USER' ( music, ringers , pix, video ) files from the phone be it windows media player or bitpim or something else

om sammy's once you play a file or do something with it, it is listed in other 'reference' indexes

ALWAYS delete using the phone menus, AND IF its a ringtone, un-assign it ( assign something else ) where the tone is used, before deleteing it..

Posted by: satinsilverk20a

You're not re adding anything. In bitpim if you right click a file one of the options is overwrite click on that and you will be overwriting the existing file. Qpst might be another option, but i'd for sure try bitpim first...

Also, bitpim version 1.04 supports 740's and you shouldn't be adding to the 10889 folder. The mr. folder is where the songs should have gone.

Posted by: satinsilverk20a

they arent, my ringtones are, but seems the songs are in that other folder and i cannot overwrite it

how do you put the phone into dm mode?

im tryin to find unicdma somewhere but not having any luck.

I'm using VZW Mobile Email. When I first installed the app, the phone would beep to alert me to a new email. Now it only vibrates. The phone's sound settings seem to have no effect on this whatsoever. Any ideas?

(A separate issue: Interestingly, if after receiving an alert I open the phone in portrait mode and press the top right softkey, which would normally would take me to "view" the email on a standard phone, I get a weird small version of the "downloading" symbol on the top right of the screen and the phone neatly locks up. Strange stuff.)

Posted by: cory_booth

I found two special menus on the u740.

MENU

TOOLS & SETTINGS

# - 000000 Debug Menu?
* - 000000 Service Menu?

I have no idea what these are for, but do not enter the * menu unless you want to loose your phone service.

Posted by: Rizon

Yeah, we knew about these already, and they have been covered in this post, as well as in other posts (I believe the mobile web thread covers the Debug Menu), and the other big u740 thread.

Mine does the same thing, there's gotta be a notify setting somewhere in the phone files, I just haven't had any luck finding it. If it tries the mail and a text comes in or the voice mail alert kicks, the phone will freeze and reboot or i'll have to reboot it manually to get it working, this seems to be a bug in the firmware, hopefully an update will come out or the bell monster will get leaked somewhere down the road...

Hey all, thought i would post that Verzion has a new SW version out. And this is confirmed from the Fort Wayne, IN Jefferson Point VZW store. The new software is V. u740.AF25. I have this update on mine and my wifes u740's. The update also didnt whipe the phone cleam of all data unlike my V3c update did. It appers to be mainly a performance update with nothing obviously new to the features list, but dont quote me on it. Its seam to have stoped the random restart issue i was having.

If i find anything else out ill let u all know.

the H.F. Thread about it!

Does anyone know why this is happening? When I charge the phone at night, I shut the phone off adn plug in the charger. The front screen says battery charging and then when it is fully charged it says Charge complete. That charge complete message stays lit on the front screen the entire time that the phone is plugged in. Is that normal? Can it be turned off? Thanks!

Posted by: Rizon

Yes, the phone's screen stays lit when it is on the charger.

I don't know of any way to turn it off.

Posted by: Rizon

I like it. There are some little things that can get annoying (such as not being able to use Get It Now or Mobile Web in portrait mode) and some other little quirks that you wouldn't expect (nothing's really coming to mind right now, but play with it for a few days and you'll find some).

Overall, though, it's a good phone, and the problems could easily be fixed with a firmware update (heck, some of them might be fixed by the firmware update a few days ago).

I just can't see carrying a tv remote like a voyager or an envy and not breaking it....

same thing here. The only thing that I liked better on my V3m was being able to change the ringer with the phone closed. I am getting use to the smaller buttons on the u740. From what I have seen there isnt a ton of things I even want to change on my new phone. The only reason I need a data cable is for ringers. With my razr I spent hours changing it to my liking.

Posted by: Rizon

It will only cost for the data used to download Mobile IM (unless you have the $15 VCast Pak).

You are charged $1.99/MB of data transfer, and Mobile IM is under a megabyte.

Posted by: Jagsfan61

that is a 1 time charge?

Posted by: SweetVixen

idk if this has been asked already but i mobile im 3.0 available for this phone?

Posted by: Rizon

As of right now, no.

I think it's only available for the enV.

if it has the A2DP Bluetooth profile then it will play music. If it doesn't, then it won't. Usually only a stereo Bluetooth headset has the A2DP profile. But some headsets can be used for stereo or mono, like the Jabra BT8010 - and then even if you are only using one earpiece it will still play music since it has the A2DP profile.

EDIT: I just clicked on that link - that will play music with your phone.

i was unaware that the u740 had the a2dp profile. thanks man!

I assume the u740 has the A2DP profile - though I don't actually have that phone and didn't even realize what thread I was posting in.

Posted by: pahhhoul

how long does your phone battery last.
I charged mine last night. Woke up it was completely charged.
Made about 3 phone calls today less than 2 minutes each.
Ringer is set to vibrate. Bluetooth off.
It's 11:50pm and I have only 1 bar left.
WTF

It does not. At least MINE (with Software V. u740.ZL05) doesn't...

and I haven't seen mention of it in the thread discussing the newer firmware.

aight, a visit to the store is gonna be in order then. thanks for all yous guyses help

mine last a full day of almost constant texting.

can someone tell me if thet have the same problem?
I use my phone for alot of iming. but when i turn on mobile aim and leave it running during the dayit causes problems. My phone will restart its selfwhile im using it three or four times in less then 10 mins. the screen will freeze and i have to pull the battery out to reset it. It also causes some of my text messages to not send. It isnt just this phone ive had the same experience with four of these phones. someone help?

Posted by: timblac

no it doesnt cost you money to download it. part of any money you pay for any of the get it now items covers the cost of the data use.

Posted by: Rizon

timblac: Do you have the newest version of Mobile IM? To check, go to right before you would start the Mobile IM application, and select "Options" (it's soft key, the right I believe), and select "Upgrade Check".

Posted by: timblac

i do. when i look at the version it says schu710. maybe this is cause they tried toadapet it to work for this phone instead of rewriting it?

Posted by: Rizon

Hmm...mine works fine. Maybe it's something that the store you're going to is doing to the phones you get as replacement.

Is there another store that's easy to get to?

If not, they should see that you've gotten 4 replacements, and should offer you an equal-value phone. You could also see if you could get one shipped to you from VZW if you really like the u740.

Is there a way to see what profiles it has on a computer? I can check on my Mac with Bluetooth (it's my only Bluetooth-enabled computer) if I can figure out how and post back, because I have the newest firmware.

Posted by: timblac

i have gotten one directly from verizon. I have also gotten a brand new one with the box and everything. same thing with them all. the only thing with the equal value replacement is i payed 170 for this phone when i came out and the replacement phones value is less. And im not to fond of the phone either. its a kraver or howerever you spell it.

On my Windows PC's, I use Widcomm drivers, and its easy to "discover services"...

Windows PC's using other drivers, its different...

Not sure how to do it on a MAC, but it is possible.

ok i see now that there is no obex transfer with bluetooth

but what program do i use to recognize and view the files so ic an add songs?

sorry if they are easy questions.

Is there a way to use the mp3 player while phone is vertical vs landscape? Id prefer that since its kinda akward holding it landscape listenin to music, would this be under one of the userprefs menu or something? Is it possible to get rid of those messages "feature available in rotated mode" things?

Posted by: Rizon

Not right now.

Since VZW recently released a firmware update, it does show they still care about the u740 (and fixing stuff, like putting Mobile Web in portrait mode), so hopefully we'll get another update somewhat soon that allows us to use Get It Now apps (including My Music) in portrait mode.

I would agree with that more if ESPN MVP was released for the phone

there is mention in there about how to put the songs on the phone via MicroSD card & card reader on your PC.

You can also use VZW's Music Essentials kit to put SONGS on the phone via the included cable and Windows Media player.

wait until a song is about to end(it won't work if you do afterwards) then open it up in the vertical mode and you will be able to scroll through songs etc., but when you actually play a song that feature available in rotated mode will show up again.

Can you set it to vibrate/silence/loud from the side keys or do you have to open it?

I have a cheap bluetooth earpiece and a cheap car kit. Is there a way to play my music though them? The music still comes out the speakers even when I am connected to them.

You need a Bluetooth headset (or car kit) with the A2DP profile - that's the only way.

I've only had this phone for about 3 weeks and I am already on my 3rd one. The problem is that the phone would not ring at all when someone would call me (I know that it was not on vibrate or all sounds off at the time) and it would not even show a missed call. I was standing next to someone that is also on VZW and they received a call from the same person that was calling me. That was the first phone so I took it back and they replaced it with a FRU phone...it started happening again a few days later so I went to a different store and asked that they replace it with a brand new one, which they did.

So far it has not happened again with the new one but it has only been about 3 days since I got it. They guy at the last store I went to said it may just be this phone model causing this problem for me. Obviously it defeats the purpose of having a cell phone if it doesn't ring when someone calls me. Has anyone else experienced this with the U740?

Hey so I posted this months ago and never got a response so I'm asking again.

1) Has anyone ever heard of J2ME? Its supposed to be a program made by HP years ago that allowed people with CDMA phones(Which the u740 is) install JAVA apps. The catch is, this program has totally disappeared, I can find very vague references to it online but no actual program or even any info about how it works.... anyone else hear of it?

2) I did some research and I 'think' I figured out that the u740 was released in Japan before it was released here and guess what? it was a JAVA phone! I'm not totally sure about this 'cause most of the websites were in Japaneses and well, I can't read it. So, if someone that can read Japanese wants to do a search and help us all out...

3) Anyone have any clue if we can just flash/install Windows Moblie on the u740? I'm sure this would take some hacking but hey.. the phone is setup to be a PDA.. why not turn it into one?

J2ME stuff: http://java.sun.com/javame/downloads/index.jsp

If you want Java on your device, you need to buy a device with Java. You're not going to get it on a Verizon device unless you can find a full firmware file from another cell phone provider that carries the U740 and has Java on it. And though that isn't going to happen, you'd still have trouble just using it on Verizon's network, never mind having any data functions working.

there are some Motorola phones that can be flashed with another provider's firmware that has Java - that would be your best bet. Check the Verizon > Motorola forum for more info.

oops, I've done it again.

This phone doesn't support the A2DP profile. I'm so used to every phone supporting A2DP that I forget that for some reason this one doesn't. At least I think this might be the phone that doesn't.

I just want to say I was thoroughly disappointed that the 740 didn't support Apple's iSync. But I also want to say Bitpim is an amazing piece of software which saved me from having to pay Verzion to get my contacts off my Razr. For those who don't know, Bitpim DOES support the 740 now (v. 1.0.4+). I was able to easily get my contacts off my old Razr using iSync, then I exported my contacts as a Vcard from Address Book. Then I just imported into Bitpim, synced up my 740 through bluetooth, and sent them over.

I had to figure this all out, so I'm just posting this for people who were having trouble like I was.

Verizon has a Get It Now app called Backup Assistant (BA).
BA is free - it says it is $1.99/month, but it is free if you have an account at verizonwireless.com (which is also free) - and there is info on verizonwireless.com that says it is free.

We all use BA - it is a simple way to ensure you don't lose your contacts, and it is a simple way to get them on your new phone. And BA sync's daily (or whenever you want), so it is always up to date.

Posted by: farmerted

Anyone know of any way to get the alarm to work with out having the phone on all night wasting the battery? I've tried the "standalone" mode but that kills the alarm as well. So far it's leave the phone on or nothing, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Posted by: farmerted

I forgot to ask in my previous post about bitbim and bluetooth. I've tried two different computers one XP one Vista, neither able to connect from bitpim to my phone. The other direct functions like "Voice Gateway" and "File Card Syn" work directly with the computers but no luck with bitpim. I've tried all the different com ports and the other Samsung phone profiles but no luck, and the phone connects to my BT headset fine. Again, any help would be appreciated.

we're lucky there is one free Get It Now app.
I believe that is the only one. Other than the stuff your phone comes with that are actually Brew/Get It Now apps (the VCast music player, for example)

Ah, I see. I'm actually really surprised Verizon gives away anything for free. I'm so used to them disabling features phones SHOULD come with, so we can pay for an alternative.

But I'm always able to get service when no one else does, so I stick with 'em.

I had read somewhere that VZW was going to be adding phones to be able to access this. Anyone know if the U740 will be one of them?

Posted by: punksmom

I have a question that might have already been answered here but I can't seem to find it. Anyway, my son has the samsung u740 (it was given to him until his phone is ready for upgrade) and it won't charge....nothing on the screen, nothing. We played with it before and got it to charge one time but other than that one time....nothing. Anyone else have this probelm?

Posted by: mick4394

Have you ruled out the charger as the culprit?

Posted by: punksmom

Actually, after it happened the first time we got a 2nd charger and it still happened. I thought it would be very unlikely to be the charger after happening again but we got yet another charger and tried it and now it works....Yeah! Third time must be a charm.

I was watching the commercial about the unlimited calling plan and afterward it advertised the U740 but called it something like "the samsung poise." i cant remember the name exactly because I was too confused as to why they'd give it a new name when its been out for almost a year now.
its not advertised on the verizon site .. but
did anyone else see this?

i saw it on a commercial called the Alias i believe.

thats what it was

Just saw it on a commercial during the colbert report. Wtf?

for which 'CARRIER/provider'

maybe its SPRINT or a GSM version

noo it was verizon alright
why a name change so late in the game?
I dont expect the phone to be around much longer.

I guess its hard for everybody to know the exact number of it.

every conversations I've had about my new phone
"what phone do u have?"
"u740"
"whats that?"
"the phone that flips both ways?"
"OHHHH u coulda have said that"

now conversations will be like
"what phone do u have?"
"alias"

It's a good idea for majority of the people.

Interestingly enough, although somewhat unrelated, when it comes to cars, the luxury brands actually move toward letter/number model identification, rather than an actual name, as that's just too "ordinary".

People like to show off what kind of engine they have underneath the hood with those numbers.

With the numbers, there's usually a correlation, however with just letters, usually not that much.

Read this article, tells you how some luxury makers come up with their lettering scheme.

Well, interestingly enough, Acura is one of the manufacturers I was thinking of when it comes to the whole lettering scheme not really meaning much, and the article pretty much confirms that for the most part, at least for that particular example, which might be more of an exception than the rule though. In any case, that's not what the thread is really about (although that's a pretty good article).

Do you recall what size\brand it was? The only thing I've read pertaining to this issue is that it only supports up to 2gb, nothing higher is recognized. I am hesitant to "waste" money on a 2gb when for a few bucks more I can buy double that (or more). On the other hand, I've also read that 2gb was the largest microsd card available at the time of the u740 release so that is why it is listed as the maximum supported size.

this phone is nothing NEW

'finally out'

this phone has been out for over a year, what did they change , why give it a NAME now ?
my wife used one for 9 months untill she got the new 'flipshot'

can you do DUN on EVDO ?

will it play 320*240 video ? because the first version does not..

did they some how make the tiny keyboard easiers to use ?

it's a decent phone lighter than the enV or voyager and dual flip screen

but I don't understand all the sudden excitement.. it like all of a sudden now it has a NAME it a more exciting phone than it has been for the whole year it been out

Marketing.

Posted by: themopedwhiz

I guess, your right..

anyway, every question you can think to ask, every question in this thread, about the phone NOT accessiores or cases

has already been ANSWERED in another thread,

the 1x dun thread

the video thread,

the wallpaper thread, the ringetone thread, they all exist

and have all the howto info, and what NOT to do info

for example

do NOT use bitpim to remove ringtones

first make sure the ringtone is NOT assigned, if its being used you will have problems

replace the assingment with another tone

then delete the tone from the phone with the phones menus

other wise the name gets stuck in a dat file someplace, and shows up in the menu even though , the tone is really not there

The funny part is that most reps aren't aware of it yet either. I bought my "Alias" last week and when I asked the rep he was like "Yeah sure..wait a minute.. do we have an alias?" then someone next to him told him its the u740. It seems a bit late to rename a phone after its been out for about a year. I'm assuming it's an effort on verizons part to ditch the letter\number names of devices for marketing purposes. The box\packaging still says u740.

It really shouldn't depend on a particular manufacturer/brand/model--they are all supposed to be manufactured to the same specifications.

That's a nice idea, but in the real world, it doesn't always pan out.

I only use 2gig cards, but i've had the best luck with patrist brand, i buy them at frys electronics

I have a new 'Lexar' card i bought last month, that i haven't even opened yet, I hope its good, its past the return date, 15 days,

I just put it aside and forgot about it

I might not represent everyone (although I would argue that most would still fall into the same category) but I've dealt with all kinds of memory cards and basically never really looked at or cared who the manufacturer was, and all have worked or work just fine when and where I need them. Sure, there could be defects here and there, but generally they are not specific to a particular manufacturer in all cases, even if perhaps there might be some more prone to them than others.

Posted by: NickVtx

I've read that the 4GB is a different type of MicroSD (SDHC?) and I've read several posts online that no one can get the 4GB cards to work.

That's why I wanted to know the specific brand and model card that someone got to work.

There's anecdotal evidence that supports both side of this.

I am using a memory card and a card reader, too. I can put the songs in the my_music folder, but I can't get my phone to play the mp3's. I get an error that says "Player Error Music is not available." What can I do? I'm getting frustrated. Please help!

I have no problems playing music. I am wondering.. Did you let the phone create the music folder on your chip? You should be able to simply move mp3's off your computer right onto the chip. Are you using a card reader of some kind to transfer your music to the chip? Below is what the filesystem should look like on your chip after the phone creates it>

Hey everybody, I"m new to the HF and it actually took me a little over a week and a half to read every single post. It seems like most of you took the easier way out because I can't believe how much I've read the same question over the 117 pages. I'm a new owner of a u740, but I'm from Canada, however I've noticed mine having the same problem of randomly restarting at times.
I'm thinking maybe an update like you mentioned Viper would solve my problem. How would I update my phone?

Just bring it into the Verizon store and they'll update the firmware. It is free.

It sounds like the phone in question is a Bell one, in which case a lot of things from this sub-forum might not apply at all.

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted. He should bring it to a Bell store, and post in a Bell forum.

Well I invested my time reading all the pages and you guys have some valuable stuff in here, but yes not all applies over the border. I couldn't find a thread like this one in the Bell forum. I actually just found out there was a Bell forum

Here's hoping someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to play mp3's on my SCH-U740 that I have loaded on a formatted microSD card. I copied my mp3's to the "my music" folder on the microSD and verified that each filename doesn't contain any special characters. The problem is that I can't get any of the files to play. Anything that I may be overlooking? Thanks.

Posted by: Deathblow

How exactly are you trying to play them. Did the phone indicate that it recognized and was sorting them?

is there anyway to turn off that annoying warning when your inbox is almost full??

You should be able to turn on auto-erase which should avoid that (by deleting older messages as it becomes necessary to make room for newer ones).

While Mobiledia isn't always correct on when a phone will be released, as the phone I got in 2006, they had it originally listed as Q1 2006. Anyway, Mobiledia has the Alias for Q2 2008. I even have a link to what the updated phone looks like. It's not much of a difference. Just it highlights the number buttons to tell you where they're at in landscape mode.

http://www.mobiledia.com/phones/samsung/alias.html

Posted by: GoatofCMU

That's disappointing. I was hoping it would have a few hardware tweaks too (2MP?) considering they marketed a whole new name for it, another color, etc. The highlighted number buttons were in the old one too, they were grey instead of black.

Posted by: Humpa

They didn't market a "new" name for it - they simply gave it a name.

They've realized that phones with names sell. So they gave it a name and are now selling it.

Posted by: revdrjflash

can anyone tell me if this data cable will work with the 740 and bitpim? looks like it will but i don't want to buy the wrong thing

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...ROMOBOX:NEWLIST

back in december i sent a few small ringtones to my phone via the yournumber@vzwpix.com trick but it looks like those morons killed that as it just bounces back to me now.

Posted by: Shadowwar

It should work ok. No promises but my ebay cable worked great. You will have to get the drivers by installing the verizon music manager software that is a free download off verizons site.

Posted by: breal247

i need help. Every time i open the phone it goes to the voice signal menu. how do i fix this?

They most certainly marketed as the u740 before. Now they're marketing under a different name. It's name was the u740; it just so happens that it's the model number, too.

I don't think it was a name, it was just a model number, and since it didn't have a name the only way to really refer to it was by the model number, which is what they did.

Posted by: GoatofCMU

I'm really not going to go into great debate over whether or not vzw marketed the phone under the name u740.

The total point of my post has been missed. I'm disappointed that they're giving it a whole new ad campaign and going through the trouble of releasing a "new" phone/update when in reality the only thing that's changing is the color of the housing and the numbers on the keypad.

I could care less about their marketing strategies.
Apparently they think they can make money by remarketing it - whatever. Who cares?

That's pretty much SOP for Verizon, as we're all painfully aware.

Posted by: itsjOs

incase anyone cares the "updated" alias is on the website

Posted by: fluku

And I see the only things they changed are the color, the buttons and they new and improved price.

They dont even have the hi rez images up yet.

Posted by: z06fun

I have searched through this thread but i can't find any info on this. I really really need to be able to store more than 50 text messages. Does anyone know a way to change this, it seems ridiculous that I have 50 megs free and it only allots 1k for text messages. Very disappointing to say the least. The samsung website say it will store 200, I even called them to confirm that. They told me the phone may be defective and I mentioned that I know other people have the same issue. Even the hidden parameters didn't seem to have anything related to this so if any one has any ideas I would be very appreciative!

Posted by: Humpa

All Verizon phones have a low text message storage limit. You'd think they would have addressed this by now - there is a large demand for a way to store and/or backup text messages.

For now, your best option is to get a smartphone instead of a feature phone if storing lots of text messages is a requirement.

Posted by: fluku

i find it humorous that you can get a slightly used u740 on eBay with no contract, for less that the new and improved Alias with a 2 year contract.

Posted by: manamazing

Got mine a few months ago and the ONLY thing I don’t like about it is this….

On my Razr, I had my contacts in there WITHOUT the area code. But when someone called me, it still showed up as their name.

On this phone, if I have the contact in without the area code, and the person calls me, the call comes in WITH the area code and hence it doesn’t show me who it is, just the number. I HATE THAT!
Wish it could be fixed

Posted by: Humpa

Most of the phones are like that now. Just put the area code in your contacts, that way you will be "future proofed". Plus, those numbers without the area code might not even work if you try to call them - depending on where you are when you try and call them.

It is the 21st century - 10digit numbers are now the norm.
Though I remember when we only had to dial 4 numbers to make a call.

Posted by: manamazing

good advice except for one thing.......

If I put the area code in the contacts, THEN when I dial someone, obviously Im not going to put the area code in and when I look down to make sure I called the correct person the name wont appear.

Geez, its frustrating

then dial from your contacts - why are you punching in 7 numbers? Isn't it quicker just to dial from your contacts?

Some areas won't even work if you just dial 7 numbers anyway. It has been years since I've even tried though. When I was living up in Boston, we were congested so we had a half dozen different area codes, and it varied by cell carrier as well - so you had no choice but to dial 10digits.

EDIT: "obviously I'm not going to dial the area code" ... lol ... where do you live, anyway? I'm just curious why you have so few area codes - someplace that is sparsly populated, I assume?

North Carolina. Pretty much all of my family, friends live in the same area code.

Thanks .. I was just wondering.
Though I think we've beaten this to death. Just do what suits your needs best - you now know how the number and phone interact.

Posted by: C DM

On the LGs I've had the contact ID would still get mached up correctly if I simply dialed a 7-digit number while I had the full 10-digit number stored for that contact. But, yeah, most of the time, instead of dialing even 7-digits, I just use speed dials that I set up, so that it usually takes me 1 or 2 digits to dial whatever numbers I usually dial (and for those that I don't do as much, going into contacts and selecting it to call there is still probably simpler than dialing 7-digits, or at least no harder).

Hello all...I'm new here. I read through this thread and didn't see this question in any of the posts. I just got a u740 with Verizon. I also got the Mobile Phone Management Tool CD and computer cable made by Mobile Action. I've noticed that the phone does not charge while attached the the computer, it transfers files with no problem so I know the cable works. Is there a setting that I'm missing or is there anyway to make it charge while it is hooked up the the computer?

Some cables charges some phones, others don't--just depends on the cable and/or the phone.

All phones will charge if attached to the computer - it is just a matter of whether the cable will. Normally aftermarket cables will charge (that is often one of their selling points).

For example, untlil recently, the factory LG cables did not charge.

Hi all. I bought the black version of u740 but I returned it because it was randomly rebooting itself... I know this has happened to several people on this thread. Today I have received the Silver version as a replacement. Here are few things I would like to share:

1) it has been only few hours since I have been playing with it but the rebooting issue is not happening on the silver phone

2) the keyboard is better. the white coloring for the numeric keys make it easier to see the number font.

3) personal preference but I like this silver color over the black. it's actually gray, not silver.

4) I used Verizon website's Backup Assistant software to transfer my contacts from Black to silver phone. It works pretty well. However, be warned ... it sets speed dial destinations to your contacts randomly. So after I had imported 90 of my contacts onto my new phone, I had to manually remove speed dial association for each of the 90 contacts, one by one. Took me about 30 minutes.

Posted by: holla123

One question I forgot to ask...

If anyone finds out a way to hack the phone so that it always keeps the outside screen ON, please share. I leave my phone on top of my desk, and am constantly having to press the outside buttons to light up the outside screen to see if I have text message/v-mail/missed call. I know I can setup Reminder alerts for text and v-mail, but always ON would be wonderful. Thanks.

I'm using Bitpim to add ring tones on my U740 however when I delete unwanted tones its leaving the file name in the ring tone menu window how do I remove?

Posted by: manamazing

when certain people call me, the phone rings twice and then stops. The little speakerphone icon shows up on the front face,

whatsup with that? Very annoying

Posted by: andrew0830

Okay, so I got my phone a little wet last night, and I initially thought it was fine. Until I went to use it.

None of the buttons work except for the end button, side buttons, and I think the bottom row (i know that little bottom left button, space bar, and num lock work).

Other than that, the keypad is essentially broken. So, I can't really use the phone. Can't call, text, etc.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? Also, will Verizon fix/replace it or am I screwed? There is a little grayish/whitish square under the battery, is that to recognize water damage? I'm fairly sure it is, but I really hope it's not .

I just got this phone a few weeks ago and am fairly upset about this...any advice or ideas would be appreciated....

Posted by: andrew0830

Update to previous post:

I have now taken out the battery and put the phone by a fan to dry it out. This seems to have helped slightly as one row of keys works now, but the majority of the keyboard still does not, so the phone's still pretty useless.

Hopefully this will fix the rest of the keys soon...we will see.

In response to recovering from water foul ... It's been awhile since it happened at this point, but you might want to try this. Put the phone is a ziplock bag with a little air in it (not full). Put the bag and phone near a heat source, but obviously nothing overly hot. The warming air will expand and any remaining condensation should be pulled out to the plastic interior walls. It might not help you at this point, but I've brought back a couple cell phones and an ipod from near-death after exposure to the elements while skiing ..... give it a shot - you never know. Good luck!

Anybody have any idea if there's a way to enable a learning function of the "Word" text mode? It says on the official Samsung u740 page that there's no way to teach it custom words, but I figured that was bull since phones have been able to learn words for such a long time now. There's gotta be a way ... but then again, maybe not. Any ideas?

It generally happens automatically as you type a new word using Abc and then switch (back) to Word/T9, which usually makes the phone memorize the word.

It's been said on here a lot, but DO NOT DELETE USING BITPIM. Always delete through the phone itself, and it's been recommended that you also remove it from any contact/personal ringers before deleting.

Somewhere, probably in the U740 ringers thread, it tells you how to get rid of the empty songs. It had something to do with remaking the ringer with the exact same title, a hex editor, and then deleting it from the phone. I don't remember the exact method, but if you search that thread, you'll find it. I also don't suggest going haphazardly by my "sort of" directions above. Find the real directions.

Not a-happening with mine ... Can you verify that it does, in fact, work on your u740, because I've found several other postings saying that it can't be done with this phone or many other Samsungs on Verizon's network? ... Plus I've tried many times on my own and have had no luck, which is a real bummer. Just because it's got a QWERTY keyboard doesn't mean I'll never use it in portrait.
Thanks!
