Blackberry Pearl

I am considering buying a Blackberry Pearl.

However, I have never used a Blackberry device before. I have been with symbian for a long time. In fact, to be honest I am debating between waiting and getting the N95 when it gets a bit cheaper or getting the Pearl in about a month.

So I am actually looking for some quick info regarding the blackberry and what it is that makes them so popular. But before that I just want to get some facts straight.

Does blackberry pearl support 3rd party software like the symbian OS?
If so how much software is out there for the Pearl and what kind? Games, Office apps, utilities..etc
Is it worth the switch from a symbian os to pearl! Because from my understanding Blackberry is for typically emailing. And the pearl does not have the full fledged keyboard that traditional blackberries do.

Thanks for your responses.

One thing people get mixed up is Suretype is not bad. Many people actually type faster with suretype then qwerty. ST is actually quite comfortable and easy to get the hang of.

Suretype is amazingly accurate. I don't even pay attention when I am typing on my PEarl, it is just natural. It knows what you are typing, no worries.

it took me like two days to get used to suretype after switching from t9. it's awesome. i've never had a smartphone before, so for me it took a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's awesome.

it's the most customizable phone I've ever had, which is a very important thing to me, as I can seldom hear ringers and tones that come with phones. the ability to switch the menu around to my liking is wonderful to, as some applications and features i use more than others. and i particularly like how you can hide applications you have no use for. fabulous feature.

it's small, but not too small. not too heavy, but not too light. i hate super light phones because those are the ones I drop the most...you know...by not realizing it's sitting on my lap.

i've only had it for three days, so i don't know about it's durability, but i think between the weight and my holster, i can make the 200 bucks i spent stretch out.

i'm quite pleased with my purchase.

The biggest thing is really reliability... There are lots of other pluses as well and some things that will probably just have you scratching your head. However, they're great little devices.

Blackberries do support third party apps but the platform doesn't have as massive a library of software available. If you rely on your Symbian apps make sure that there is a counterpart for each app in the Blackberry world.

As for whether the switch and SureType are worth it those are both judgement calls you have to make. Regarding SureType, I can't stand it but others swear by it. It's just a matter of personal preference...
