BlackJack: Switching between WAP and Internet

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

How to avoid it? Email app wants WAP in Settings/Connections/GPRS/MediaNet/ConnectsTo while Google Maps and many sites want Internet setting. As a result I constantly have to go back and forth switching between two values. Is there way to avoid this annoyance?

And a more general question: All these WAP, Secure WAP, Work and Internet settings fro Settings/Connections/GPRS/MediaNet/ConnectsTo where are they defined and what are the diffs between them?

Wirelessly posted (Palm680/RC1 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/Palm-D053; Blazer/4.5) 16;320x320 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

the diffrence is that wap uses cingulars proxy and internet doesn't.

also some apps or sites that stream audio/video won't run on a proxy

Set both "Internet" and "Work" to both be "My ISP" (make them the same thing, whetever you chose.) If you haven't messed with the MY ISP setting it should, by default use wap.cingular without the proxy.
The "Media net" setting is the same thing, wap.cingular WITH the proxy (so don't use it unless you want to get to the media net site or cingular video.)

I don't have a BJ so there's a small chance something is different on your BJ from other WM5 phones that I'm not aware of. But I don't think so.

I did this and my Treo 750 stopped trying to switch connections every time Activesync wanted to connect.

The difference is that if you want activesync to contact a corporate exchange server through a corporate firewall using VPN or using a dial up connection, you can set one up under "Work" so it (an any app you tell to use 'work') will use it. That way those apps connect to your work network/servers without you having to go change the settings. All other apps should use "internet"
Some apps things let you chose the connection you want to use, in that case you should always chose "internet" so it'll use what you set there.

Now what I said before, using wap.cingular, isn't a bad thing. There's another access point isp.cingular. Wap.cingular is the normal internet connection (and it's a full internet connection.) The only real difference between isp.cingular and wap.cingular is that wap.cingular is NAT, isp.cingular is not NAT. ISP.cingular is really only for people that can't get VPN to work on NAT (wap.cingular.)
Otherwise it's going to give you the same full internet conncetion. There are no closed ports or anything.

Does this answer it?

Cjmedina, thanks for explanation. But what drives me nuts is that I have to constantly change between Internet and WAP. XMEmail and many WAP sites like wap.howardforums work only on WAP setting and won't connect on Internet. Opposite story with things like Google Maps and general web sites. I though that maybe there's a way to have autodetection or something.

I'm sorry but how do I mess with "My ISP" setting and where? The only thing I see is Connections/GPRS is Media Net. Should I create a new "My ISP" connection and set it to the same settings as Media Net but without proxy? If so what's the password? Also I don't see where Media Net refers to proxy?

RF9, thanks a lot for your help!

rf9 smartphones data connections are wierd in comparsion to ppc. to the op wap.howardforums works fine for me using "internet" but wap doesn't work sometimes. also with the proxy big images look real fuzzy because cingular compress them. just leave it on "internet" unless you wanna stream cingular video

Sorry. I guess the blackjack settings are different enough from the other WM5 Pocket PC phones. I didn't mean to confuse you.
Those settings are here by the way:
https://www.cingular.com/support/de...nt=KB72585.html
If you need to create a new connection for whateve reason. The proxy is mentioned here. You just don't set the proxy unless you want/need it.
