Sony isn't SonyEricsson. So I don't get what this is doing here. They're obviously not talking about a phone.

Posted by: sandini_power

lol this is SONY ERICSSON for phones not for SONY

I've learned to hate apple, but come on! an ipod killer?!? Apple has too large of a headstart. Plus, all those people who have bought itunes music are now locked into apple players. Besides, someone somewhere already posted pics of the mew player and it got a less than warm welcome. I would love to see someone slay the ipod, but this isn't going to do it.

Posted by: Scottish Skyedance

no ogg vorbis + asf support = no deal at all

Posted by: Adi23

Yeah clearly not Sony Ericsson however its not like he's breaking a rule I see all types of off-topic threads here and I dont see anyone complaining. Its at least related to Sony.

Sometimes I dont understand some of you people at all.

Posted by: homer09

this wont work because it pushes atrac way too much. sony has been artificially keeping this format alive for the past few years by pumping lots of money into it developing new variations.

imho, unless they move away from atrac, they will never catch on.

Who wants to have the thinnest video player?

Quote:
Sony added the facility to play back videos, the display will be a high-resolution full color display. The width of the device will be about 6mm, which is really very slim even compared to the Apple Nano.

Posted by: bbevol

Hard to beat apple now... Never been into ipods at all, not worth it and not that great too. Besides itunes??? don't want a company to control me with their software cause i use their stupid product.

Posted by: hybrid.09

You call 8GB flash memory iPod killer? Zune is an iPod killer in my opinion. Don't post wrong garbage in the wrong place.

Who needs Sony, they software is horrible, and Apple has the best online music store, and plus it's so damn easy to use.

I won't post garbage if you don't act like garbage. The garbage is in your mind not the world.

Posted by: Tehy

yeah, yeah... All companies are lauching the "ipod killer" stufff but ipod always wins :P

I used to think that Toshiba had a good chance against the Ipod with the Gigabeat, but that didn't work out so well. Then I thought maybe the zune will stand a chance, and so far it doesn't look like it, I just don't think anybody can catch Ipod now, it's a household name.

I have a Creative Zen V Plus and it is pretty good, in my opinion i think its better than a nano and shuffle.

iPod sucks crap..the only reason I believe so is cuz iTunes is the world's crappiest music application...I'd use it only with Anapod Explorer...that's a drag and drop application for it..still..the thing is ugly itself...

Love my iPod 5gen, but ONLY with ROCKbox firmware loaded on it ! Also love my iRiver H120 which is more than 3 years old, and kicking strong as if I bought it yesterday. In fact, Toshiba just released (finally) their single platter 1.8" 40 gig HD which conforms to the size of the H120's spec size. So throw that in there, along with a new 2700 mAH battery for 27 hour playback, and THERE is your standard iPod killer.

H series still king with Digital IN/OUTput, lcd remote, line in/out recording and one of the best sounding DAC's in a DAP, in its time, and still current.

Everyone probably thought the same thing in regards to Nintendo/Sega vs PlayStation. Nintendo and Sega were synonymous to video game consoles when Sony released the PlayStation, and within a few years, Sega's exited the hardware market, GameCube's sales were a fraction of PS2, and PlayStation is the household name.

So it's not entirely impossible for a brand that's been dominating a market to get beaten by a new product. It's just has to be a superior product that's marketed really, really well, and be user friendly. Just my 2 cents.

ipod sucks....the music quality is so bad. i dont know why ppl like it so much

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Ipods are USED for audiophiles, they are amongst a fav becuase of their crystal clear output that no other audio player has.

The only downside is lack of a real EQ, which is fixed by installing roxbox or getting an external amp, which most audiophiles would do anyways.

Posted by: marktang

i had the newest video ipod before and the sound quality is so bad on it. the bass sounds hollow and flat. and the high notes are abit sharp on it. and i wasnt using those crappy ipod headphones. i was justing my sony DJ headphones.

Posted by: chimphappyhour

I'll log another vote for iRiver. Best dap I ever had. Fortunately, it hasn't strayed far so I can get my hands on it again if need be.

Sony DJ headphones...can you be more specific, I know many sony 'dj' headphones that sound like crap.

Ipod + roxbox = amazing sound.

I'm still intrested to see how a zune will sound.

Posted by: marktang

i had the sony MDR7505. the ipod sound just isnt good. lacks bass, high notes not really in tune. only mid range notes sounds good.

Probably the only MDR worth mentioning are the 7506's. (AKA V6) I owned the V6's for a few years, and are a great set of cans which are fairly neutral, but with just a bit more upper range timber than some may like initially. Burn in helps this over time *(could be psychological, I'm not totally sold on physical burn in)

What makes the 7506's even better, is replacing the stock ear pads with Beyerdynamic DT 880 velour pads. Very comfy.

iPod/ROCKbox/Ogg/FLAC = Though iRiver H120 w ROCKbox +Ogg or FLAC or whatever =

Guess you've never tried an iRiver DAP then, eh ? Much better SQ natively as well as w/ROCKbox. Using either my UE Super.fi 5's or Sony V6's or Slew of Koss KSC's, going from using my iPod (5th gen) back to my H120 is like walking in the park on a semi cloudy day, and having the clouds part, and the sun come out to wash all over your face.

Posted by: marktang

that's what im saying ipods isnt that good. iRiver sounds alot better in my opinion with the same headphones

Posted by: dougrb

It's all a matter of preference really, since sound quality is always subjective. I agree w/you that pretty much all iRiver DAP's sound a lot more clear/neutral with more visceral and impactful (not mushy) bass, vs. any gen iPod. ROCKbox helps the iPod significantly, but not enough to trump the Iriver DAP I own, which is also loaded w/ROCKbox.

Guess I just prefer the DAC.

Posted by: marktang

yeah if u are going need to buy expensive headphones for it might as well get a better device.

This is where they're winning over so many people. I have an 80GB iPod and although I know how to get my own music and videos on it, iTunes really is an amazing store for the rest of those that would just rather pay.

Posted by: MO3iusONE

I thought that the Zune was going to be an Ipod Killer, after looking at the Sony Mp3/Video player, thats no Ipod killer. Someone needs to come out with something thats going to be compatible with Itunes, I really think thats the only way they would win. I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather go to the store and buy my music, I'd rather have the actual copy of the music then downloading it.

Posted by: MrWizard87

So how many so called 'ipod killers' have been released to date? How many have actually succeeded?

Posted by: NineToez

^^ That's the thing. Many go to bat, however none so far have yet to hit a homer.

iPod is the winner and nobody will ever change that, every teen wants what? an iPod. Apple got the headstart and the press all about it. I have a Creative Zen Vision W which I like much more, but no doubt the iPod is way more popular.

I don't know about all this. I mean yes the Ipod is the MP3 player of choice and I cant blame people for wanting one, it's not like its a garbage MP3 player and people buy it anyways, no it's a really easy to use, attractive looking MP3 player. For a while I thought that the Zune would of been an Ipod killer but after looking at the thickness of the player and how useless the WI-Fi was especially when you can only transfer a song and that person can either hear it 3 days or keep the song for 3 days, I just thought that was a waste. I think if companys invest some money and come up with some unique ideas, they could probably overthrow Apple's ipod but after seeing the Iphone and the type of touch technology they have, well all I can say is that they'll secure the throne for a long time.

iPod is great but I hate iTunes
I rather own the cds then buy them and own it 'virtually'
a mp3 on a computer really has no value but a cd you bought from the local store can
Apple is all about design and looks, that is what attracts consumers to their products
Just like their Macs and notebooks, they all look great but no way would I ever buy them, maybe gifts to ppl who are very illiterate with technology

20 years ago, the teen - actually, teens and adults alike - sheeples were all hot and bothered for the Sony Walkman series of portable audio players... and look where they are now? Sooner or later they'll screw up, for better or worse.

In order to work with the iTunes store (that's what I'm guessing you mean, because you can already get regular mp3 players to work with the iTunes software - as long as it's regular mp3s and not stuff from the store), such an mp3 player would have to work with Apple's FairPlay DRM. That's not going to happen because Apple refuses to license that technology to anybody else...so much for Jobs' rant about DRM being bad and restrictive. Doesn't he realize that his company is one of the few that has anywhere near the power to dictate to the RIAA the terms of digital music sales? Remember when the record companies wanted to have a sliding scale for iTunes downloads? And Jobs basically said "F--- off?"

Bottom line is, the iTunes store is designed to help sell more iPods, where the large margins are. Any profits from the store is just icing on the cake. If it means they make only a few pennies per song, so be it.

Another vote on the iRiver. They have the new iRiver X20 and it's very promising too. Excellent sound quality! It's a great player.
