The Total Samsung SCH-u740 Guide Thread

Information up-to-date as of 23 February 2007

****NOTICE: This is a thread to help out those who will buy or have bought the phone. I will try my best to address every single question that everyone has asked throughout the several u740 posts to make this a quick one-stop thread. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, this is not a thread to ask more questions or talk about your phone or whatever, go to the OFFICAL THREAD for that. If it needs to be added to here, it will. With that being said, if you know something and its missing, by all means, post it in here. Any other reason, please don’t post. This thread NEEDS to remain simple and free of clutter so everyone can get their info without having to post and post and post the same question. Information will change, so keep in mind, this info, in this post, is as current as of 23 FEBRUARY 07| 18:30.

My thanks to EVERYONE who posted tips/tricks/knowledge about this phone. Without them, this guide wouldn’t be possible (To all my HoFo peeps ).

GENERAL
• Compatible with Wireless Sync and Backup Assistant.
• NOT mini-usb. The cables are proprietary. If you have a data cable from the a970, it will work however.
• As of 23 February, this phone is NOT officially supported for Bitpim. However, this will change so just make sure to check out their website (www.bitpim.org) for the latest software.
• This phone is NOT QVGA.
• The speakers and speakerphone is STEREO.
• The usual Bluetooth Profiles for Verizon (NO OBEX).
o Bluetooth Stereo Headphones Capable are advertised, however, this phone doesn’t seem to work well with the profile (no AD2P as far as we can tell). We’re hoping a software update will fix this if the profile REALLY is there, but just disabled.
• Flash UI Themes: Amoeba, My Desk.
• Non-Flash UI Themes: Rainbow, Business (VZW Standard), Tropical.
• MANNER MODE: Press AND hold the # key to activate VIBRATE. Press AND hold again to go back to NORMAL settings.
• The backlights of the keys are WHITE. NOT BLUE. You cannot change this. The flash on cameras when taking the picture of this phone can make it look a different color.
• MP3 ringtones can be individually assigned to your contacts. However, you can not individually assign a message tone with your contacts.
• Swivel is very sturdy in either direction (PORTRAIT or LANDSCAPE) however; there is a little play when in either mode. But nothing to be seriously concerned about.
• Battery Life is pretty good. 13 phone calls (avg 5 mins), 2 1 hour phone calls, 3 hours of straight mp3 play, and an hour of camera play, and I’m down to 2 bars.
• Alerts, Calendar, Call Sounds can have VIBRATE. However, ALARM CLOCK, and CALENDAR cannot do vibrate AND ring.
• Speakers are very loud but on certain songs or ringers, it can start to crack/pop.
• MP3’s and Mobile Web are only viewable in LANDSCAPE mode.
• Startup: 14.6 seconds
Shutdown: 5.9 seconds
• Keyboard is not ideal for big fingered people. But after awhile, it does get easier to use.
• Size is very thin, comparable to the LG 8600 and RAZR.
• QWERTY is very responsive. No noticeable delay with key presses.

MP3/WMA’s
• The phone is capable of playing mp3s both on the phone and on a SD card. The internal memory on the phone is only 60MB, so it is recommended you use a SD card.
• Phone is capable of up to 2GB MICRO/TRANSFLASH SD CARDS.
• No equalizer as of yet to fine tune your listening pleasure. We are hoping this will change with software upgrades.
• Putting MP3s on your SD Card:
o If this is the first time you are using your new TransFlash card, FORMAT IT! Easiest way:
 Insert TransFlash card into phone
 Go to SETTINGS & TOOLS --> MEMORY (8) -->CARD MEMORY (3) --> “OPTIONS” (right option button) --> FORMAT CARD
 This will ensure that your card is ready to go and that it has the correct folders in it already created (i.e. my_mp3’s, etc.)
o Take the Transflash card, insert it into the SD Adaptor and place the adaptor into a memory card reader on your computer for SD cards. (FASTEST)
 Filenames can ONLY be a max of 36.3 characters (36 + . + mp3).
 You can also plug in your data cable, put ur card in your phone, and use the Music Essential Kit’s (MEK) software if you dont have a card reader.
• NOTE: YOU MUST INSTALL THE PHONE DRIVERS FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you don’t have the drivers, but have the phone and data cable, try: http://www.vzam.net/vcastmusic/Step2.aspx, this will install the drivers AND VZW Music Manager.
• This way is a good safe way to transfer your mp3’s. It will automatically RENAME your files to fit the 36.3 character limit on file names.
 Drag and drop the files you want into you’re my_mp3’s folder.
• Bluetooth Stereo……….unfortunately this feature does not work well with the phone although Samsung has advertised it with this feature ("capable" was the wording). Once again, our hope is that the hardware profile is there and that a software upgrade will enable this feature.
• You can play your MP3s with the phone closed.
o You will need to light up the front screen (phone closed). Press AND hold the HOLD button or UP/DOWN VOLUME till the front screen lights up.
o Press AND hold the PLAY/PAUSE button. A message will appear asking you to PRESS play again to start the player. PRESS PLAY. Your MP3’s will start in PLAY ALL mode. To stop the player and return to normal operation, press AND hold PLAY/PAUSE again.
• Answering a Call/Text
o Unlike the chocolate (8500 and its bro the 8600), this phone will not continue to play music while you do other functions. In addition, it will NOT resume play when you take a call or answer a text message. HOWEVER, if you have the MEK’s stereo headphones, you can resume ONLY if you open the phone in NORMAL or LANDSCAPE to take the call or text message. After you send it, a message will pop up asking you to RESUME GET IT NOW. You cannot answer this message with the phone closed, and if you try to open the phone when this message comes up, it will close it and stop your music player.
• Album Art
o Available with purchased MP3s through Verizon.
• HOLD Button
o Press AND hold and it will lock all the media and side keys while playing your music. If not playing your music, you can use this button to activate the front screen (checking time, etc.). Press and hold it again after screen has been activated, and it will lock all keys except the HOLD key.
• The adaptor included with the phone is for 2.5mm jacks. This is not the size of normal stereo headphones. Visit your local store for an adaptor.

TEXT MESSAGING
• Viewing on the outer LCD:
o MESSAGING --> SETTINGS --> TXT MESSAGE (2) --> AUTO VIEW (1) --> Turn this feature on, and it will display the text message without opening the phone.
• Dictate To Text: Activated when tying a text message. It can be found in the ENTRY MODE (left option button) menu when writing the text, called VoiceMode. You will be asked to train it before the first use. Then all you do is press AND hold the voice button and talk into the phone. If you mess up, dont stop. It will ATTEMPT to correct itself after its done. Once you're done, release the button. Once it corrects the words by itself, and if the word(s) are still not right, then you can change the word(s) manually.
• BLOCK/UNBLOCK feature can block phone numbers from sending you text messages. Nice if you have annoying forwards all the time.
• Samsung ONLY features: Postcard and Sketch
o Sketch: Draw or write something down on a piece of paper. Go to send a NEW MESSAGE, but select SKETCH MESSAGE. The camera will turn on. Take a picture of what you just drew or wrote and the phone will superimpose it on the screen to be sent as a picture.
o Postcard: Select NEW MESSAGE and POSTCARD MESSAGE. Your picture album will pop up. Select the picture you want as a BACKGROUND. Next the camera will start. See SKETCH to see how this part works. After you take the picture, the SKETCH will go over the picture in GREEN font. Great way to customize some pictures on your phone.
• To insert a . , ? ! – etc. in LANDSCAPE, hold down the button that has the symbol/number you want. Another way is to change the ENTRY MODE using the left option key or press the NUM LOCK key.
• When in PORTRAIT mode and you want to use the QWERTY instead of the t9/ABC, you CAN close the flip and open in LANDSCAPE without losing your message (but not vice versa). The default is 3 seconds. This can be changed in the SETTINGS & TOOLS --> PHONE SETTINGS --> FLIP DURATION (3) to 3 or 6 secs.

RINGERS
• BitPim is the easiest way, however, until the software supports the phone there are several methods.
o EMAIL:
 From your computer, send an email to XXX-XXX-XXXX@vzwpix.com (X = phone #) with the ringer attached (MP3 ringers are supported). NOTICE: Not all ringers are going to sound great using this way. Some will crackle, some will sound muffled while others will sound GREAT! If you use BitPim to create the ringer (does not require the phone to be connected) using the a970, Chocolate, V, or enV settings, it works well, but still flawed. Your ringer will be stored in BitPims RINGER folder (usually in the BitPim folder in MY DOCUMENTS).
 If your ringer EXCEEDS 200k, don’t be surprised if it takes almost an hour or more to get your ringer sent to your phone. It will eventually make it to your phone, just the bigger the size, the longer it takes. If your ringer exceeds 300k, your ringer will start to sound like crap (unless it’s non-music) via this method. Not all, but most. I had one ringer that was 384k. It took almost 2 hours to get to my phone via email.
 Keep the filenames SIMPLE and short.
 When you receive your email, open it, OPTIONS  Save As Ringtone (5). It will be saved. You will be asked if you want to SET IT NOW? If you want this as your main ringer, select yes, if not, select no.
 If using BitPim to make your ringers, the following settings work really well with MOST mp3s:

• Type: MP3
• Channels: 2
• Sample Rate: 32000
• Bit Rate: 64
• Time: under 30 seconds
• Feel free to up the settings for sound quality, keep in mind, with a higher bit rate, you’re ringers may get this annoying squelching sound every so often throughout the ringer. Also, the longer the time, the bigger the file size.
o HEX EDIT:
 If you don’t know what your doing, DON’T DO IT THIS WAY! For those of you that are ok with it, please refer to the following thread:
How to install Custom Ringers on the U740

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1111907

HIDDEN MENU
• SETTINGS & TOOLS --> STAR KEY --> Enter all zeroes as the password
• Debug Screen
Test calls
Voice SO
Port Map
Force Mode
Pref Mode
Clear Session
Throughout Test
Bluetooth
SATS Mode
Graphics

PHONE CALLING
• Phone calls are pretty clear and crisp. A couple people have had an issue with a metallic-like sound, but seem to be isolated. You will NOT hear yourself while talking in this phone.
• Multi-Directional microphone.
• Speakerphone is activated automatically when opening LANDSCAPE mode.
o NOTE: When you close the flip, and its on speakerphone, this will NOT end the call!! So be careful if you decide to talk about the person after the phone call.
• In NORMAL (PORTRAIT) mode, press and hold the SPEAKERPHONE button to activate.
• With the phone closed, pressing and holding the SPEAKERPHONE button will answer the call with speakerphone on without opening the phone. Press and hold SPEAKERPHONE to hang-up.
• If you have speakerphone activated and don’t de-activate it, it will automatically turn off after a couple minutes. You’ll hear a couple beeps when it happens.
• In SETTINGS & TOOLS --> DIAL FONTS (6) you can display the way your phone shows the dialing of the numbers (Normal, Rainbow, Quill Pen, Post-It Notes).
• Voice Dialing: Call <Name or #>, Send <Msg Type>, Lookup <Name>, Go To <Menu>, Check <Item>, My Account, Help Guide
o Make sure you do the tutorials and adaptation of your voice activated settings before using to make it easier.

CAMERA/PICTURES
• 1.3MP
• Camera Start Time: 3.8 seconds
• Two ways the phone takes shots (and your pictures will be affected):
o LANDSCAPE: Full shot. Everything seen on the screen shows.
o PORTRAIT (NORMAL MODE): Sides are cut-off and picture is longer.
o These two ways are like describing WIDESCREEN (LANDSCAPE) to FULL SCREEN (PORTRAIT) with movies, (only way I can describe it).
• FLASH: Auto, Off, Always On, Only This Shot
o ~5 feet distance (approx) in 0 lux.
• Color Effects, White Balance, Metering.
• Self Timer: 2, 5, 10 seconds
• Quality: Fine, Normal, Economy
• Resolution: 1280x960, 640x480, 320x240, 160x120, Picture ID
• Multi-Shot: Series, Divided, Auto/Manual
• NO MACRO on this camera. So up close shots, especially involving screen shots, will be a little blurry.
• Outside shots, very well for this type of camera. Low-light settings are still a little bit of a challenge however.
• In your photo album, you can select one of your pictures and edit it with the following options: Effects, Decorate, Revision (Brightness, Sharpness, Blur, Saturation), Merge, Copy & Paste, Resize, Rotate/Flip.

VIDEO
• Plays .3gp and .3g2
• Can be used for your MAIN wallpaper, regardless of length (so far).
• In Super (movie converter application, http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html), use the standard 3gp. (nokia/nec/seimens) settings. (h.263 and AMR audio).
• Other known settings to work:
o 3G2, codec mpeg4, 176 x 144, fps 15, bitrate 160 or 190, audio aac, 56k stereo 22050 sampling.
o 3GP/3G2, 176 x 144 at 12.5fps & 15 fps, 240K bit rate
o 128 x 96 at 12.5fps & 15 fps
o It won't play files encoded 200 x 176
o QCIF (1/4 CIF ) is 176*144,
QVGA ( 1/4 VGA ) is 320*240
CIF is 352*288
VGA is 640*480

WALLPAPER
• Can be stored on your memory card, however, as of now, if you remove your memory card it will forget to re-assign the wallpaper. Photo-ID for your contacts remains in tact however.
• The u740 will automatically adjust pictures over 320x240 to fit the PORTRAIT and LANDSCAPE modes. In LANDSCAPE, it will slightly zoom and/or stretch the picture to make it fit. This is not true for VIDEO WALLPAPER. They will not stretch or zoom to fit the screen when in LANDSCAPE.
• Viewable wallpaper size for full screen is 176x184, wide screen is 220x140.
o Best way for wallpaper, make an image 220x184 and you just have to have the right type of image to make it work in both orientations. the focal point has to be no more than 140px tall and 176 wide center focus otherwise you’ll get it cropped.
o If you have any picture bigger than 640x480, it will fit the screen just fine in LANDSCAPE but slightly crop in PORTRAIT.
• PHOTO IDs: Resolutions that will take up the full screen on the outer LCD:
 176x146, 158x160, 176x160, 176x136
• For additional information and clarification, please refer to:

DUN
• Please see the following thread:
1x DUN on the U740 howto setup
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1114647
• No free WAP settings as of yet. However, as this phone becomes older on this forum, I’m sure someone will find it out. Look in this thread for a proven method later on.

BitPim, CALENDAR & CONTACTS
• Can be connected via BitPim to link the u740 to OUTLOOK for calendar and contacts.
• Until an officially supported version of BitPim is released for this phone, use the Samsung a950 profile to connect. Be forewarned, as mentioned, BitPim does not officially support this phone yet, so use at your OWN RISK.
• Connecting with BitPim is described below (thanks to TheMopedwhiz):
o MEK is the best way to get a cable & the phone drivers
if you have BT on your PC you don't need the cable but you do need BitPim.

NOTICE: The phone doesn't sync with 'outlook' as far as I know but outlook 'exports' files that BitPim can import. So you export the list using outlook to a file (I think the extension is CSV). Then with BitPim you import the file, then send the file to the phone.

I never use outlook, but yahoo exports contacts in the same format so you can import them to outlook or vise-versa, and I did do the export import thing a few times with BitPim and a different phone.

Most people want to use BitPim with the 'previous' phone to save a contacts list, then using BitPim with the u740 to import that list and send it to the phone.

NOTE: it doesn't matter if you have an LG 8100, choco, V, enV, a sammy 950 990 or the u740.

BitPim, being free ware, is always a version behind on the phones with full support, but many things ( menu wise ) work the same way on all versions of BitPim with all phones.

The BitPim GUI/menus/windows do their work in the BitPim cache NOT directly on the phone.

Import a contacts file from your PC, then you check it, change it if needed, or accept as is, but its NOT on the phone until you SEND the data to the phone.

Same thing for pictures & ringers, but those functions are not yet supported in the GUI menus because we are using the support for the a950.

The contacts / phone book has been in a std format for several years, across most models of Verizon phones, which is why this function works with the NEW u740.

NOTE: if you shut down BitPim and unplug the phone, without/before sending the data to the phone, then the contacts list will not be on the phone. If you delete a name or change a number , but don't send the data back to the phone there will be NO changes on the phone same goes for delete wallpapers or ringers, (once the support is added).

The exception to this rule is 'file system mode' this reads and writes directly to the phone, directly into the directory tree.
NOTE: Put the wrong file in the wrong place and you can BRICK your phone, but IF your careful, it can be very handy.

Right now the file system tree is the only way to add custom ringers to this phone (via BitPim), it can't be done thru the BitPim GUI until the support as been added to BitPim GUI for this model.

good work, but could you tell me what is the limit of text messages that are kept in the inbox/outbox folders?

Inbox = 52
Outbox = a rolling 31. once you get to 31 it well keep letting you send another, but delete the oldest one.

Dude, great work - thanks for spending the time to put all this down, it kicks a$$.

Just a clarification on this as its not really specific, and some of the newer LG's appear to be coming with additional BT Profiles...

The http://estore.vzwshop.com/u740/ web site mentions BT Stereo Audio (A2DP) support...

BUT... the manual that came with my u740 only states 5 Bluetooth profiles...

Page 77-78

1. HSP: Headset Profile
2. HFP: Hands-Free Profile
3. SPP: Serial Port Profile
4. DUN: Dial-Up Networking profile
5. OPP: Object Push (vCard Only)

When discovering available services using my PC (widcomm 5.1.0.2100 drivers), those "5" the manual states are all my PC discovers...

and the regular Verizon wireless web site (where you would purchase the phone and service) doesn't mention anything about A2DP or stereo BT audio... http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...tedPhoneId=2869

And my LG HS-110 Stereo Bluetooth Headset, only connects in Handsfree/Headset mode. NOT BT Stereo.

So, it is safe to say... out of the box... the U740 doesn't support A2DP.

Is that a mis-print on the vzshop.com web page? or a feature to be added with a firmware update later? (like the LG Chocolate's Speaker Phone was)... So far, there has been no official word, only speculation.... We will have to wait to know more.

Right now, if you try BT Stereo Headphones, they will connect and work in HANDSFREE/HEADSET mode.. and give you the same audio support and sound quality as if you had a regular "mono" bluetooth ear piece.

Good Work!

It's been hard managing all the subscriptions

Posted by: iggyst00ge

Any news as to whether the phone is compatible with Avanquest's Mobile Phone Tools? It's not listed on their web page yet, but Mobile Phone Tools is being sold as an accessory to the U740 on some web pages.

I just find that Mobile Phone Tools is a little easier to sync with my Outlook Calendar than BitPim.

Thanks,

Chris

*** NOTICE ***

As per the NOTICE in the ORIGINAL posts, please do NOT post questions in this thread. The Official u740 Thread is for that. If the question gets answered and needs to be added to here, it will be. But PLEASE DO NOT POST QUESTIONS IN HERE. Im not harping, I just dont want this thread to become like the offical thread. I spent too much time on it.

Thanks

Thankyou to K O F and memphisnate for the good eye. It should be # key not * key for the hidden menu. My apologies. Sometimes when you read and re-read several times you dont always catch the simple mistakes.

nice work. i should be up for my ne2 soon, hopefully this will be a good replacement for my tired e815

Posted by: king_of_fools

From the a950 thread, also works with this model. Don't know if it serves a purpose yet but it has info on your phone.

Quote:
Device Information
Another New code that I have found out that seems to tell you information about your phone...nothing special, but its there....
from the main screen enter the following code:
#43574357*
This should bring up the "Device Information" Menu where you can browse
"1. System Info" Your MIN, ESN, SID, NID, Channel (CDMA 800/1900MHz) and Battery.
"2.Version" Your S/W, H/W, PRL, ERI, Browser Info, and BREW Info
"3.Capability" Language, Types of Data/Messages supported and your Technology (CDMA 1x digital, Dual Mode, EvDo...etc.)
..That’s it...again nothing special inside, but if you want to take a look, and if you a930/a970/a990 users have anything different that might be of interest...please tell us.

Posted by: king_of_fools

I just picked this phone up and I noticed when it is opened either way there is no wallpaper displayed on the outside screen. I've set a wallpaper for it but it does not show. Is this right? Does it not show anything on the screen when opened? Just wondering. Doesnt hurt anything if it dont, I am lovin this phone.

Posted by: thevillageidiot

This should be posted in the other U-740 "official" thread, but the only time I've noticed anything on the outside screen is when you are using the camera.

thanks for the help!!!!

Bluetooth Headset capable, Wherever you go, go hands-free with the u740's Bluetooth headset.
It still pictures the LG HS-110 Stereo Bluetooth Headset in, but no longer mentions A2DP or BT Stereo.

So it looks like A2DP support was a misprint.

Posted by: StarRider

You need to turn off the clock display on the front screen for wallpaper to show.

Or an invitation for class action ... that was one of the profiles I wanted and if they are ripping me off again (see last phone model) I will be royally pissed, because I did my research this time around with my last experience in mind.

well its happened. I can send you a log of the email time sent and the time recieved of the pix message with the 300+k ringer. Could be a lot of factors involved, for i am not the only one that has experienced it. It does the EXACT same thing for my u620. Not harpin on ya, but just saying it does happen. If you get the file in 10 mins.....awesome, we are all happy for ya.

actually, if you change the clock setting to anything but analog for the front lcd, the wallpaper for the front lcd will show. i am using the digital clock setting and i can see my wallpaper for the front lcd.

I'm not sure about how well this would work for other people, but it's how I get ALL of my ringtones on my u740. www.phonezoo.com

Upload a song, sound, or something like that (I often just use ones already uploaded from other users) and select up to 20 seconds of it to send. For the record, I'm Teamster on there too. since they don't have the u740 in there yet, I just selected Samsung Phone (Generic) until it is. It's been working fine so far.

thats fine and all...but on:

LG8300, 9900, Sam 740, LG8600, moto krzr and razr, and the 8500....all within minutes.
hell, even the old school lg7000 i had a while back was quick.

Posted by: R3GUL8OR

my LG 9800, u740, u620..........not all within mins. Someone mentioned it earlier, but I think area might have something to do with it possibly. It would explain why you get it so quick while others like myself have to wait for awhile.

I just tried this and the ringtones are wayyyyyyy to low. Had 3 sent to my phone and every single one wasnt nearly loud enough even with my volume cranked to the max. Thanks for the info though.

Posted by: Teamster

Really? That's odd. All the ones I've tried are plenty loud. Sometimes even too loud.

Ive gotten a couple emails about this, so Im just going to post this here. This is not by any means a "new" feature, however, a lot of us that have had or have newer phones, take this feature for granted and forget to mention it to our "new" people:

to REMOVE the VERIZON BANNER, go to: TOOLS & SETTINGS --> DISPLAY --> BANNER --> ERI BANNER --> and turn to OFF

DOES ANYONE HAVE MASTER PROGRAMMING FOR SAMSUNG R225?

There are rumors that the U740 will come in black sometime this summer. Has anyone heard anything more concrete?

Posted by: n3yne

i noticed a secret secret menu that i havent seen info about yet... if you go through the settings&tools #000000 menu, then press 0, it will ask for a 10 digit password. i havent figured out the password there yet, but maybe someone knows it or can figure it out and get us into this new menu?

oh, and does anyone know how to change the speed dial number for voicemail? i've already tried hacking the user entry i want to be number 1, but the voicemail one is taking precedence...

Greetings fellow U740 users.

Is there a way to go full-screen while in landscape mode without using the slide-show feature? When pressing OK on a pic in the thumbnail view the pic will then center on the screen but not be full-screen. A subsequent press resorts back to thumbnail view. In order to display in full screen I've found that starting a slide show will display the normal size pics in a slide show, but pressing OK during the slide show will maximize the pics.

What I'd like to do is get the pics to display full-screen without going into slide-show mode. Is there a way to do this?

2nd question:

Is there a way to transfer files from internal memory to external, so that it can then be off-loaded with out having to e-mail / or use the V pic site?

Thanks in advance!

Posted by: Redsoxcells

You can transfer files by going to Setting & Tools, then 8.Memory.

First, I apologize if this is on this thread somewhere and I missed it. I ordered the U740 yesterday, so I hope to see it Monday. While researching this phone though, in several times it is mentioned that some things on this phone will work, or work better, or start working when sotfware upgrades come out. My question is where I do go to find the software upgrades?

lol, you're safe. hasnt been asked. but phone software upgrades are done at the VZW corp stores. If one comes out, you'll more than likely hear about it on here first.

Thanks a bunch, hadn't gone passed the option to specify where to store files.

Anyone have a note on how to full-screen pics taken w/ camera w/o slide show? Or possibly how to navigate the slide show?

Bought an H700 headset the other day. Is there any way to access the speed dial list with the voice cmd menu? Speed dial would be a great cmd to add to the main voice menu, followed by a number.

Totally screwed up my voice adapt test. Love how the screen keeps timing out while taking it. In the tutorial it talks about a dictation notepad type app, I checked in notepad and didn't see a dictation option. Where's that at, if avail?

I heard the same thing. I would love to change from this ugly gold to silver or black.

I have a question about texting in the landscape mode....

when i hit the P key, it automatically writes poiu
when i hit the arrow key under the P, it writes lkj
when i hit the enter key below that, it writes MNB

how do i stop this

when i hit P, i want it to just write P

I bought it because i like the features of the phone. For the color , i want to get as far away from having a "bling" phone

Giving me my boring silver or black back.

although. how cool would that be to get an OTA software upgrade and it can change the color of the phone. Like the phone casing is made up of different cells that can chagne color based on a software value stored in the phone. Fish can do it. Why not our phones. lol

[/QUOTE]

Thanks for the tips! First, bitpim won't accept .csv inports from Excel 2003, but will pull the contacts in from Outlook 2003. I purchased the Samsung PC Studio, which came with a cable that works, however their u740 drivers don't recognize the phone. I was also able to establish a cable link using Veriszon's Vcast music drivers. The problem is that Bitpim, while it does transfer contact and calendar info to the phone, it only picks up about 1/3 of the contacts, and only the preprogrammed calendar items (Mother's day etc). Does anyone have an idea how to work around this?

I have tried deleting the items that made it, then trying to resync, but all that did was capture the first record and delete everything else on the phone. Sigh.

When I sent an MP3 for my ring tone the volume was very low. I even Went into Audacity and increased the song by 12dB. It still came back as the same vol as before. I sent the ring tone using www.vzwpix.com/. Is there any way to make the volume louder?

use bitpim

Profile: LG VX 8500/8600
Sample Rate: 32000
Bit Rate: 64k
Channels: 2
Time: Under 32 seconds.

You can also adjust the volume, but I never needed to.

And here is a video I took to show you...

First time is when I sent it to my phone for a ring tone and the second one is the song playing in the music player from my SD Card.

It gives me an Error with both profiles. I have BitPim 0.9.13

I got this error using the 8600 and the same or similar error with the 8500 profile

ok forgive me, and my head is hurting but did I miss something with that video. Im going to assume its in ref to your first post about the volume?? Im sure Ill figure it out what you were trying to show after I post this, but oh well.

Second, my bad. Ive had to say these settings over and over and over again on both here, the official thread and the u620 thread that I left something out................

DO NOT PLUG IN THE PHONE WHEN MAKING THESE RINGERS (I am assuming thats whay you got the error, if Im wrong just tell me). You have to email the ringer to your phone. The profile is ONLY to make the ringer. BitPim doesnt support this phone yet.

ahhhh ok. yeah. you cant use bitpim to transfer the file to your phone unless you do the HACKING method that has been described in another post. try the settings i suggested, and up the volume (just make sure you hit SET after you raise the db level) and let me know if its any better

Ya I hit set I have done everything and cant get it any higher. WTF it is the same for my dad(Razr) and my mom(chocolate) what ever song I put on its low sound. My dad bought a song off verizon it was low also so he was going to the store to see if he could return something but he could not and they credited him back but even that was low...hmm..

I am having problems On something I should not be having problems on just my luck.....

at this point i dont know what to tell ya buddy. ever ringer ive done, the volume has either been perfect or annoyingly loud. Im not sure whats going on with your phone or phones for that matter.

I'm curious about this as well. I've tried all the 10 digit codes posted for other Samsung phones with no luck.

I also have to say thank you for such a great resource. I just got my u740 yesterday and was starting to doubt my upgrade, until I stumbled on this forum and found the abundance of info!

I am having some issues with my new u740

-it's annoying that i can't text while listening to music (or use the phone for anything while listening to music)

-the themes are horrible

- the calender adds a day to everything. for example if i'm on april 4 and try to add an event it adds it on the 5th.

anyone have ideas for these problems or help for me? thanks

Posted by: espezial

Also I can get music onto my phone by conecting it with the cable, and syncing it, but how do I put pictures on and take them off this way?

Don't know what you're talking about "soon" cause it's already out, all my Verizon stores have it...so now I have it! Kinda boring...

Thanks for the cool thread!

I still really want to hack the phone like I hacked my razr...maybe soon

I was out at 2 verizon stores here on Long Island and they didn't have the black U740s and no one could tell me a release date either. So you must live near some Rogue Verizon stores !!!!

The thought of working at a said rogue verizon store is pretty amusing. They must have considered us more rogue than not, as they stocked us with more blacks than gold!

VERY CLEARLY STATED. So lets try this again, please, dont post this question in this thread. And i was going to tell you about your caps too, but i saw your post on another thread so pointless to say anything. thanks for stoppin by

Has anybody noticed that the phone pictured on the u740's default desktop theme is *black*, not gold? I realized it a while back, and it has continued to amuse me.

Posted by: carm_carm

I have notived a few things since i have had this phone; less than 1 week that might be worth noting to everyone. I have not seen a post for them as well, unless posted somewhere else:

1) I have noticed from the day i got the phone that it will NOT learn words when used in the traditional way, not landscape view. I undersatand that it does have a full keyboard, however, i am sure there are alot of times where landscape mode will not work when texting. I dont know if this simple feature was left out or is just my phone...it would be nice though

2) i have noticed that the MAXIMUM size for sinding videos is about 162k( 15 seconds) i noticed that i can recieve up to 299k, but when i try to forward that it tells me that it excedes file size! WHAT THE........ someones is not thinking! I know from prior experience with the nokia 6256i, you CAN upload up to 299k, and it did work many times when using that phone so i am sure the network supports uploads of that size. there has got to be a phone setting to change this so it is not so A** backwards( maybe in that secret menu with the 10 digit code ).....it would be nice

3) can not attach multiple attachments when sending mms, but can recieve multiple attachments, and will not forward them either...... it would be nice

4) I noticed not only this phone but almost all except PDA phones (and of course the nokia 6256i) that you are UNABLE to organize you files on your phone. They give no options to create folder/albums within the root folders. So, as a result of a 1 gig card, you might have 1000 pix all unorganized on the root folder. Now who in the world would want to sift through all those files looking for the one you want. Afterall who would have 1000 files on there desktop in no folders what so ever. It seems some common sence things are simply being ignored! But as i have said ....would't it be nice.

I simply wanted to point out a few thing that were not mentioned in this post, and hope some people in the industry take a look at them!

Since all these things bother ME i will be returning this phone upon return of my vacation for a more capable one(even thos i thik its a tight phone), or at least one that i can organize my files, learn uncommon words and possibly upload multiple/larger comtent via mms

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Just to add... Here is a step by step how-to guide on how to encode 100% perfect videos with Super for playback on your u740. These settings give you the best possible video quality without going too big on the file size.

3g2 (Sony Ericson)
MPEG-4
AAC
Use Direct Show (Check this, if you get an error uncheck it)
176:144
4:3
14.985 fps
480 bitrate kbps
Hi Quality, Stretch It, 3gp v4/v5 (check only those, uncheck everything in options)
22050 sampling freq
2 channels
56 bitrate kbps
default audio stream

Any other options I did not mention specifically uncheck/do not use

Like I said... these work 100% for the Samsung SCH-u740... I have encoded everything from wall papers...to 30 min cartoon episodes....to 2 hour movies and THEY ALL WORK PERFECT! Mods, please feel free to make this its own sticky or add it to the "known video settings" under the faq

I apologize if I skimmed across this, but if you set a date in the Calendar, there is no way to eliminate the little calendar icon on the screen, correct?

It is really annoying, and because of it, I don't even want to use the calendar feature!

what is SATS mode under the hidden menu?

is there anyway to load mp3s onto my card through bitpim?

i have a microsd but, i dont have a card reader for my computer to connect it to.

Ugh, I some how pinched my front display and it bled toward the center in an orange glowing mess.

Looks like the touch screen layer made them leave out any protective plastic or glass around the LCD and you can easily crush the outer LCD. I'm so happy I saved $ by not getting the insurance... Pretty stupid, the three buttons are so low that they could have still put something firmer above the LCD. I didn't even scratch / dent the cover, so I'm not sure how I did it. Must have squeezed down on the edge.

Yea, I cracked my outter screen like 3 days after I got the phone, I went to the verizon store and after telling the guy some stuff, he took care of me.

Just incase anyone is looking for how to get free pix messaging on this phone, here is a link:

hello ive had nextel, and mastered tones wallpapers and games on nextel phones, for a long time but recently went to verizon and got this u740. my question, or problem, is that i cant connect to bit pim through bluetooth. i connect with my pc and it says im connected on both my phone and my pc but when i try to have bit pim find my phone it seems to disconnect from my pc and it says it cant find my phone i have my bitpim settings set to what the threads has been telling me. any little stupid thing i might be doing wrong?
thanks

Posted by: dacool25

Like i said in my last post, i've gotten free pix messaging on the u740 using humpas mms server (also, we got it to work for more than one service provider)and i posted a how to on my forum, (so we didn't have to start a new post on here since there is already so many)

But there is one problem, after doing this it says that the sending failed (but it really works fine) I am trying to identify the reason why and how we can fix this. Please check it out and post your thoughts on how we can fix this.

Well heres how this works. Ive created this thread to give quick answers to the most frequent questions. on the VERY FIRST page it says, PLEASE dont post questions on here they go to the official page!!!!!! VERY CLEARLY STATED. So lets try this again, please, dont post this question in this thread. And i was going to tell you about your caps too, but i saw your post on another thread so pointless to say anything. thanks for stoppin by

Man, you need to un-bunch your panties. Your first page is very informative, don't get me wrong, but who cares if some people ask questions...your header says "FAQ" in it, so how will you know what a "faq" is if you don't have them in your thread. Secondly, you keep referring people to the "official thread"...however, this thread is ALSO titled the "official" u740 thread...so how are there TWO "official" threads, and which one is really official? I get that you are SOOO proud that you wrote a faq and got a sticky...but you're being a real knob to everybody who hasn't read every single word of your original post and might not have seen the one line that tells them not to ask questions. Honestly your faq is largely a bullet-point instruction manual for people who are too lazy to read the one that came with their phone, so I wouldn't blame somebody for not reading the entire thing. If questions really get on your nerves so much, ask a moderator to lock this thread so nobody can detract from your greatness. THANKS FOR STOPPIN' BY!!!

I just got my u740 today. This guide was INCREDIBLY helpful. Thanks.

I did have a problem with the ringtones being too quiet and kind of garbled. I found that by lowering the bit rate and changing the file to mono the sound quality on the phone improved. It seems wrong, but it worked. Like R3gul8or said, a bit rate of about 64 (I found 58 worked better, but whatever) and sample rate of between 22k and 36k and you should be ok.

since your post was pointless, I emailed you my response. No point making people read it.

For those that really want to know:

The whole disclaimer thing, I was asked to put it there so everyone who reads this wouldnt be searching thru pages of crap. If you have something to add to the sticky like a trick, or a cool feature, by all means, post it like so many have done. Thats the point of this sticky so all the new people to this phone can get their answers quick. If you think the disclaimer is a little harsh, i'm sorry, but the general population according to the emails I get are glad its up there. I was asked to make this sticky so I did. If you all dont like it, thats cool with me. Just realize that hundreds of people read these forums daily. If you had just got this phone and you wanted some quick questions answered, do you want to shift thru pages of junk or get the answer and go finish doing what you were doing? Thats all im sayin. sorry to those of you who dont like the rule, but as any HoFo user knows, there WAS A REASON for why it was said. And I think invisible21 just proved that to us.

Thats odd. You shouldnt of had to change it to mono. PM me when you read this. Sometimes, from what ive seen, there are some songs that just sound like crap no matter what you do. cant do anything about it.

lol

Ok so i haven't checked in in a while but i found something out ...

Playing music on my phone, I happend to have my Bluetooth headset on and sitting on my ear ... after a few minutes, I realized it was there took it off and shut it (it is a Motorola HS810) it took a few seconds for it to turn off and disconnect, and then something happend. The sound for the music turned down a notch ... almost seemed like 2. I looked at it, and after a few minutes figured out that it corrisponded to the closing of my BT headset.

So I opened it up again, and low and behold after a few moments of time to register with the phone, the audio level jumped back up again, past the full volume capacity of the phone.

Intersting little oddity i figured i would share.

if you create folders in ur my_mp3s/my_music folders will it create playlists for you or will vcast just not recognize the mp3s anymore. Can you create playlists or is that only if you get music via vcast?

Posted by: anthonyatddn

nope, i dont believe playlists are able to be used on this phone. just dropping the files into the my_mp3s folder is what you can do. you can however choose to shuffle the songs when played. that will give you some difference each time you play.

Posted by: R3GUL8OR

on the phone itself, you can create a playlist

Posted by: anthonyatddn

but not subfolders in the mp3 folder correct?

Posted by: jojotherider

Don't know if this was posted or if I'm posting in the wrong thread, but are there any other uses for the 'fn' key?

I know that you can use it to dial vanity numbers (1-800-samsung) in landscape mode. Just type 1800, press fn key, type in Samsung and it will actually dial 1-800-726-7864. Pretty cool little feature. Just seems like you should be able to do more with that button.

anthony- i wanna say yes, correct.

joel- pretty much the FN key is good for adding the punctuation marks and other keys if you dont want to hold the button.

how do you do that? I've tried holding it down and pressing a key, but I just get the letter. I figured that's what it was for, but I couldn't get it to work.

it's not the FN key
it's the num lock key

Posted by: jojotherider

that's kinda what I thought, so is there no other use for the FN key?

Is there a hack to allow game play in portrait mode...my fingers don't seem to be able to use the pad well in landscape.

I just got a new black u740. The bluetooth range is pretty disappointing. My Plantronics Discovery 665 headset starts cutting out when the phone is any farther than arms length away and its even lcloser if it is on the wrong side of my body. The same headset works fine on my friend's new LG VX8700 for much larger distances (at least across the office, ~ 15ft.).

Has anyone had issues with bluetooth range on this phone?

I looked on Apple's website and it doesn't look like they support it. There's a list of compatible phones on the iSync page.

Mind you, I was just looking at bluetooth possibilities.

If it changes, I'd sure like to know.

I am having a weird ringtone issue. I can no longer save sounds that I get via text message as ringtones. When I choose the option to save as ringtone- it says that it saved, but the ringtone is not located in my ringtones folder, however it is located in my sounds folder. Yes, I am very sure that I selected save as "Ringtone" and not save as "Sound". It's really weird. Any ideas?

Posted by: jojotherider

is there a limit to how many ringtones one can have?

Posted by: karends

Thank you for this great resource. I'm looking to get either the Samsung SCH U-740 or LG EnV (VX9900) from Verizon, but the most important thing to me is a good calendar function that can be easily sunchronized with my PC. I don't love Outlook, but I could live with it. Which is easier to sync? Do either sync with Google Calendar? What special software/cabling do you need? Or should I stick with my Treo (which I don't use for email or web, just calendaring)?

This phone does not support A2DP (needed to play bluetooth stereo). Your hands-free headset is not the same. to play music through it, it must be a stereo bluetooth headset and the phone must have A2DP profile.

I see. And there's no way to play music even in mono? No hack, etc?

Somebody help me.

I have installed the drivers for the u740 on my computer and loaded my contact into BitPim. They are csv files.

Whenever I click send data to phone the add radio button is greyed out under Phonebook but replace all isn't. When I hit replace all that one time it deleted all numbers I had. How can I get my contacts onto this phone??

Something new is going on...

I tired to get on Vcast yesterday and it made me download an update for headsets. I did. Then I downloaded and played a song. I expected it to play through the speakers and it started playing through the headset! It's only a mono headset.

I got all excited and tried to play one of my other mp3s, hoping that it too would play through the headset, but alas it was not to be. I could only get my other songs to play through the speakers. Bummer.

So, anyone else have this new update? Has anyone figured out its secret sauce for playing mp3s through the headset?

I just tried getting on VCast, but it didn't make me update. Will this only work if I have a headset connected at the time?

Posted by: ljaffe

I did have my headset attached at the time.

Does anyone have an issue with Mobile Web anytime you enter the hidden menu? I have to keep reprogramming the phone (*228, press 1) for it to work again.

I tried it on last night. It didn't make me update (maybe I missed it), but it worked! Music samples from inside VCast play in crappy (sample) quality on the mono Bluetooth headset. Unfortunately, nothing else does. My guess it, once you buy the song, you can't play it from the same place (VCast catalog), and then it'll revert back to handset-only.

As of now, Bitpim does not support the u740. When I tried to transfer my contacts, it overwrote all my contacts (erasing #MIN, etc) with only half of my contacts. And, a third of the transferred numbers were wrong because only the last 6 digits of the number transferred.

I manually entered the rest of my contacts.

The only other way I know to transfer the contacts is using VZW Back Up Assistant, which a customer rep told me was free if I do it through VZW online (My Account). The only thing about it is you have to download it to the phone (Get It Now) and the phone states it is a service for $1.99/month.

(Your prior phone has to be with VZW for Back Up Assistant to work.)

This has been my experience with transferring contacts with this phone.

https://www.getbackupnow.com/ shows that it's 1.99 if you don't have "My Account" (your vzw acct on vzw.com) and free if you do, and has a link to register for your acct on vzw.com if you don't already have it set up.

It is confusing to be told that it's free, then have the phone tell you it'll be $1.99/month, but that's the way it is right now. ::shrug::

Hope this helps =) There's also the $10 to transfer from phone A to B in the store, as long as the port in the old phone was ok.

Posted by: dacool25

As long as you use my account online, you will not be billed for it, no matter how much that it says it is on get it now.

From your computer? Try http://www.tonethis.com

It has the Samsung u740 on there. It lets you send ringtones, wallpapers, movies, and games. The games thing doesn't work for verizon though. You can select the whole song or video or cut it down and send it. It's cool and quick too. Oh yeah, it's FREE! The items come in as a picture message.

I don't know if this has already been asked (I've been through the first five pages and haven't seen it, and I'm getting tired), but since the "mini-USB" uses a proprietary cable, does that mean we HAVE to use the Samsung charger? I have another Motorola charger that uses mini-USB, and I'm wondering if I can use that to charge it as well.

Yes, you have to use the Samsung charger. The connector is not mini-USB

I just got this phone the other day. Its ok, I hate how you must rotate it for many things and when it tells you to, I got to rotate it and then it disappears! However, I have found a way to crash the phone. Get an MP3 (I have the free Guitar song by Prince on the phones internal memory) and press and hold play on the front until it says press play again. Press play again and when it says processing, open the screen in portrait mode. When the song starts playing, pressing down will restart your phone. So far nothing has gotten screwy by doing this.

Yes i was reeealy curious about that too, and after alot of research I was able to find that number. Its 0218243440 . It'l bring you to a page titled "PARAM EDITOR". It contains 5 choices,

1. SYSINFO Editor
2. USERPREFS Editor
3. Build Version
4. MP3
5. EVDO test editor

If you go into USERPREFS Editor, the first thing that'l pop up is "HIDDEN_MENUS:I" and under it a 0. You can go up and down for a whole bunch more of these editable fields.

My question tho, what the heck is it and how to we use it? It looks like something that you can do some serious messing with. Does anybody know how to work this second secret menu?
