I believe those white bars are due to the orientation of the picture you are taking. "landscape" mode will end up with a picture that is much wider than it is tall. "Portrait" mode will show the picture the other way (narrower).

If you have your resolution set for one mode (e.g., 640 x 480) the phone will not "resize" the picture for you so that it will fit. (Nor would you want it to, because it would end up all distorted).

Roughly similar to the "letterbox" issue with some home videos. You can (usually) compress the image a bit to make it fit, and you can always make the landscape view fit by cropping the image, but if your phone would have to make those calculations, it would take a very, very long time between pictures.

So I believe those "white bars" represent the difference between what will fit on your screen at the resolution you've chosen and the actual full size of the image were you able to take the picture without any phone-imposed limitations.

I called CS, they said that it was an old plan (DUH!!! That is why I didn't want to lose it) and it couldn't be easily added back. The rep said that she would put in a "review request" or something like that and within a month I would hear if the problem was fixed. It has now been 2 weeks and I continue to pay per message on my wifes line. The rep did say that she would refund me the messages from the date of the text plan removal forward , when the problem was fixed.

I want to know if there is any chance of any of this happening? Is there a way I can get VZW to give me the $10 text plan for $5, since VZW messed up? I saved the chats, I wrote down the phone reps names and I have every reps five digit VZW ID.

IS THERE HOPE???

I was looking at settings in PSTLite, and I noticed for NAM1, there are "CDMA Home SID/NID Pairs #1" all the way through #20. #1 has my home SID in it, while the rest are all zeros. Could I add SID's to this list, and have the phone prefer it over whatever's in the PRL?

I also just got the Samsung, so I might swing by to check out the Voyager, even though I don't like candybar phones either and love the Samsung's form factor.

That said, the Voyager is a vast improvement over the giant Env brick, and the big touchscreen on the front looks amazing. (I love that the iPhone is at least scaring the industry into being a lot less stingy with screen...no more tiny screens and giant bezels!)

I have a problem putting ringtones onto the phone. I don't tranfer through a usb cable to the phone. Instead, I have the card and a card reader. I think this way is more simple. Anyway, when I plug the card reader into the computer and open it up, there are folders for mp3s, pix, flix, and sounds. But none for ringtones. I've dragged the mp3 onto there and that worked fine, so no problem there, but I'm not sure how I can get ringtones onto it. Can anyone help? Sorry if this question was answered already...

Question is answered repeatedly on this site as it is where I learned how to do it. Search is your friend.

I'll be nice and give you the quick and dirty, 2 second resolution. Put ringtones on your card, insert card into phone. Note, the MP3s need to be reduced in size (again do a search). Next, text sounds to yourself - yes, this is possible. Save as ringtone when the phone receives them. My .02 deposited.

Menu -> Phone Settings -> Security. Enter last 4 digits of your phone number, by default. Reset Settings.

*228 is Verizon programming number to call.

Thanks for the advice. I made some ringtones using Audacity, short 20 second ones, and exported them as mp3 files. I put them in the my sounds folder on my card, but then when I put the card into the phone they don't show up under my sounds. It's a mystery...

Word for word what I did. Now, just rename files to .mid. Problem solved.

As far as I know, no. It's for self-portrait mode.

Why do you care if the front screen shows the picture? Shouldn't the person you're taking a picture of know that you're taking a picture of them?

technically if you put a .gif image for the front screen... when you activate the camera, the image is still there trying to continue to animate. so its kind of covering the camera from being shown

ive read every post on this forum..well pretty much every post and i havent seen on question on locking this phone. can someone help me with locking the phone? whats the difference between lock device and lock location? when i do lock it, it only locks once. can it relock by itself after i unlock?

I know what your insinuating. I need it to not be on to take pictures of my dog, every time I try she can see herself and runs off or turns away. And why would I want self portrait mode on if I'm not doing a self portrait anyway?

Ugh. So I got my phone and it's been in use since Sept 9th. For about three weeks now it's been acting strange.

At least once a day now, directly after I send a text message the phone will turn off on it's own. At first I thought it was something hitting the power key when I closed the phone but then it did it while the phone was open. The past few days it's gone up to twice a day.

I don't know what to do because the verizon store will make me "show them" how the phone is malfunctioning and it does it randomly. The more I text, the more it does it.

Any suggestions? I really love this phone and I don't feel like going through this annoyance when I'm in the middle of a conversation.

I've done that everytime it reboots. :/ I've even completely killed my battery, taken it out and left it out for an hour, put it back in and recharged the phone completely.

If you have an sd card, try reseating it, if that don't do it i'd look at getting it replaced. This does seem to be a common problem and i'm thinking alot of it
has to do with the lockdown of being able to change any of the programs on it.

Send it to YOUR-10DIGIT-PHONE-#@vtext.com (eg, 1112223333@vtext.com if you number was 111-222-3333) if it's just a text.

If you want to send pictures or ringtones (or maybe videos), use your-10digit-phone-3@vzwpix.com instead. Some people haven't had much luck with this lately though.

Ok. Im not having any luck with it. Ive reduced the mp3s down in size to a 20 second clip. I changed it to .mid and used .mp3 too. I tried to email it to my phone number with the address shown. Got nothing sent to my phone. I got a micro SD card, put the file on there as both .mid and .mp3. The mp3 shows up and plays, but not as a ringtone. The .mid doesn't show up at all, in my sounds folder or my music folder. What can I do about this besides getting a usb cable?

I wanted to buy the Voyager, but I know im not willing to pay the $25 for VCast package etc, because all I really "need" is phone and texting capablities.

This phone seems to be good for that.......is this the only phone that VZW offers that has the qwerty keyboard like this?

In addition to the enV phones (now black, orange and green. . .) Verizon offers the Samsung SCH-U740 (I think that's the number)--the phone with the kinky double-style hinge. It has a full qwerty keyboard, although some people complain that the keys are too close together. This might also have to do with whether you use your thumbs or all your fingers to enter text (thumbs being bigger!)

There are also the "PDA phones" including a variety of Treos, Blackberries and a few extra.

I believe that's it, although the TV-phone with the double-fold-out keyboard looks like it has a keyboard (I have not been sufficiently interested to even look at this phone in real life).

HELP ME! I have the u740 and I was trying to use BitPim to see if I could manage my contacts on the computer rather than having to do everything on the phone. I used the A950 connection workaround and was able to download the contacts from the phone to BitPim. Then I imported some contacts from somewhere else into BitPim and tried sending it to the phone. I checked to see if that entry appeared and it did so I thought it worked. But then later I discovered that a whole bunch of my contacts were missing and there were problems with certain numbers not transferring correctly. I tried multiple times but it always did the same exact records. I even deleted everything from my phone and attempted to load it fresh and still the same ones transferred. Does anyone have experience with getting this phone to work with the phonebook in bitpim? Any suggestions from troubleshooting? I'm totally distraught because I don't want to manually enter over 100 contacts!!!! Thanks!!

Thats because they are blocking anything with certain types of media. i haven't seen official news about it anywhere, but i've seen a lot of people complaining about it and i know from personal experience that they are.

i just traded my voyager for the v9m and the u740, its not all that, it cool, but i need a good phone with reception and texting, so i got it with both, plus i love small phones!!

I did a ESN switch to my u740, and all came through to that phone, now some make it to my v9m, and all made it to my moto. z6tv so who knows???

Standalone mode takes the phone off the network, much like airplane mode
on a moto. Use it when you don't want anycalls coming in, but you still want
the phone on....

ive read these forums over and over, and im on bells u740 3yr plan, and i cant get any of the WAP or Full screen video in landscape mode to work, is this all geared to verizon software or us made u740?

wondering if anyone can help me i have alot of unanswered questions here lol

1/ with bells software can i get wap running and full screen view in landscape
2/ do i need verizons software to run wap and full screen video play
3/ if i do need verizon software where do i get it and how do i change it on my bell
u740 phone
4/ concerning wap, does it ever use long distance minutes?

To my surprise when I went to the BitPim site, I discovered that the version just released on 12/17 .04 has some support for Verizon SCH U740.

I was able to back up my contacts, and I was able to backup the Images.

Unfortunately... it does not even detect the MTS Mobility u740 as being a u740, and even if you manually set it, it won't do anything. Boo Canadian phones.

anyone get bitpim .4 version to work for u740 by bell, i noticed they have u740 in the list but its still not detecting my phone, anyone else having the same problem, bell sucks, wish i had verizon u740 seems like you can do alot more with it. anyways let me know if anyone got u740 bell, working with bitpim latest version.

Newbie here. I found the instructions for the a950 but the first enable code doesn't do anything on my a990. Hotwired said it wont work on the a990. Can someone please point me in the right direction? and remember I am new to this, so KISS (Keep It Simple cuz i'm Stupid?)

I am having a problem with my phone. I used the Vcast music manager to upload a song or two to my internal memory (yes i plan on getting a card, i just wanted to see the mp3 player quality) The first song worked fine, I then went and deleted it from the software, and re-uploaded it and another song. I left my house and later on that night I tried to play it and I got an error saying it couldn't play. I deleted them again and reuploaded, the song played but then I got an error again. This time when i synched it windows popped up asking me if I wanted to browse the phone. So i did and I got the 60mb drive, then inside was a music folder, and then inside that two folders each having the songs in them. they were seperated in folders instead of just mp3's. well ******* me deleted the folders and ever since then the phone does not recognize mp3's being uploaded. It see's that they are taking up space, but they do not show on the phone or in the vcast. Problem is the phone's memory is full now, yet I cannot delete the files.

In bitpim under other cdma I am able to see where the MP3's are stored, but do not have access to them. They dont show on the phone, they dont show in the software, yet they show in bitpim and also show in memory info. I would assume something went bad with the idb.db file? Could it have something to do with the ringtone's I've added? I've run out of ideas. I guess it was caused by me deleting the files inside the music device window windows gave me, but how can that be? arent they still mp3? wouldnt samsung be sure to have windows NOT see it as a portable device so poeple dont go in and delete like I did? is there any frekin way to do a hard reset on this phone?! gah!

Using bitpim, overwrite the file (right click on the file and select overwrite),
overwrite with the original music file you loaded, then try to delete it from the phone itself.

Question...

If you are uploading songs using Bitpim for use as ringtones, why are you not putting them in the "mr" file and changing the directory? Your file choice for MP3s is probably your entire problem.

Place them in the "MR" directory (near the bottom of your picture) by accessing the file and right clicking. Select " New File" and add the song. Then reboot the phone. Then go back into the MR folder, right click on the "mrinfo.db" file and save it to your computer. Find it on your computer, right click and select "Open with". Open it with notepad. You will see your song in this format...

/ff/brew/mod/mr/*title of song*|0|0

Change the last 0 to a 3.

/ff/brew/mod/mr/*title of song*|0|3

Go back into bitpim MR folder... right click the mrinfo.db folder and select "Overwrite". Select the mrinfo.db file you previously saved to your computer, then reboot the phone again. Your song will be there.

Verizon has the ringtone file blocked so you cannot access it. This folder is NOT the one you are after.

#1 with this phone ringtones go in mr folder

#2 it is obvious that you did NOT read the u740 ringtone thread before you did this OR you would not have done it, what you did

#3 choose a small 2k useless mp3 beep and over write the screwed up tones, at least you will get the space back

#4 use only 30 second MP3 for ringers NOT full songs

#5 and most important, THINGS CHANGE from phone to phone, NEVER assume anything, search and then READ the applicable threads before hacking a phone thats been out for 10 months

the vger and the venus where new phones a month ago, and anybody that got one and did anything to it was taking a calculated risk.

when a phone is 10 months old there Is NO reason for taking risks by making assumptions read before you do something

get a card put your music there

I need code to unlock my cell. Made a mistake changed the Nam1 to Nam2, then the cellphone rebooted; after that its lock. The message on the screen is "INITIAL PROGRAMMING NEEDED", If i push OK, the message is "ENTER LOCK CODE", I called customer support Verizon but they couldn't help me.

the new firmware does this now.

i didn't mind the 3 time vibrate and now its 1 time vibrate and its kinda hard to get used to it

Okay, here goes ...

I recently got my hands on the SCH-U740, and immediately went to work with BitPim 1.0.4 official in transferring pics and ringtones over Bluetooth (natively, not through the FileSystem). All went seamlessly, until about a week later (today ...) when I tried to add another pic, and the Bluetooth hung. The phone froze up, BitPim froze up, and my only recourse at the time was to turn off the phone and turn it back on. All started up well, though I noticed my front screen wallpaper was missing (it was one of my added pics). When I attempted to browse to My Pictures, I would never be taken to my pictures, as the phone seemed to freeze up (though it would make keypress beeps as though it were still working). Pressing END or CLR sometimes "unfroze" it, though I could never get back to My Pictures ...

So, I went hunting through the forums, and I stumbled upon http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1221504, and so I browsed to the 10888 folder on my phone and found it was empty but for the Default Album.alb file, which simply read--

0|/ff/brew/mod/10888/Default Album|

I went to work, dragging all of the "lost" image files into the 10888 folder, and edited the Default Album.alb files only so far as to take away the "Preloaded1" (I don't know why ... it seemed like a good idea?).

Rebooted the phone--no dice. Still hung, and worse yet, none the images from my "fix" seemed to stick in the 10888 directory when I went back to it in BitPim.

So I redid my last "fix," this time after I transferred all the image files I edited the Default Album.alb to include the following for each image file:

/ff/brew/mod/10888/imagename.jpg|0|3

Still no dice. And the images didn't stick again, though my changes to the Default Album.alb file seemed to. Though now, I can browse to My Pictures on my phone, but it shows there are no pictures.

By luck of receiving a phone call, I found that my picture ID's seem to still be somewhere, as they all show up when I receive calls.

So I guess I'm left to wonder ... are my pictures still in there somewhere? Can I restore them somehow?

Everything looks up to date to me... BitPim is now supported, as mentioned in the post above.

Also, while emailing ringtones to YourPhoneNumber@vzwpix.com may work, it's been having problems lately, so you'd have better luck using the "Custom Ringers on the u740" guide that's linked on the first post.

$27 shipped for a 4GB card. But if the phone will not even SEE the additional 2 gb's it's not worth it. I'm just curious because a 4GB card would have been pretty rare a year ago when this phone came out. So will it really not see the full 4GB of space or did the specs state up to 2GB because that was the maximum practical size card available at the time of writing?

Actually... if a card is too large to be recognized, it does not just "not see the additional"... it just plain won't see a card at all.

Thank you zx for the straightforward answer. But I think you mean buy a 2gb card, not a card SMALLER than 2gb. Also I never said I actually bought a 4gb card so no I have not wasted anything except some people in here's time.

does anyone know if its possible to disable the automatic capitalization of words in landscape? i found a .pdf of the phones manual on samsung's web site and it says in that manual that it can be shut off, but verizon seems to have hidden this option in their operating system. i know its possible, it has to be, im just not sure how to go about doing this. i assume it would require editing some settings file on the phones filesystem via bitpim or something. any help would be greattttly appreciated! thanks!

I tried reading through the 20 pages of this thread and I might have missed it but I'm not sure.. so again, SORRY! (You're prob sick of hearin people say that)

My friend has a 740.. I can't make up my mind between the 740 and the EnV..
The one problem they complain about is when you get a text message that has a video and a sound to it, you can't forward it because it says "Can Not Forward Multiple Slides"
Is this an across the board with the 740's or possibly just their phone? They said they called Verizon and were told that's just how the phone is.

Any ideas?

you can save the video or picture then save the sound seperatly then create a new message and and those back to the message and it should be able to send

I just got my new U740 this weekend, and its everything that I need, because i just talk and text. I passed on the voyager, because I wasnt going to pay for the "extra"s

I have one question. When I flip the phone in landscape slowly, it sounds a little like gears grinding, or maybe like sand or salt grain is in there. Is that normal?

I doubt its something wrong, just want to make sure

Mine does that too. I haven't had any problems with it, so it's probably (hopefully) nothing to worry about.

I think it sounds kinda like crunching plastic but I could see it sounding like sand as well.

I have a few more questions....

1) when you set the ringer volume by using the side buttons, why does it ask you to "SET" it. Shouldnt it just be automatic?

2) when I dial a phone number, why doesnt it pick up that its in my contact list and then put the contact name to show thats who Im calling?

It shows the name for me, maybe the number in your contact list has the area code and you're dialing it without the area code and its not matching up?

Because not everyone wants a memory card and it helps keep the cost of the phone down I'd imagine.

it will if you dont touch anything more. the SET button si basically to do a quick set and move on with what you want to do without waiting.

Unless there's really a setting for that--and I guess it's possible although not very likely, in which case it would probably be some setting in the voice prompt menu--it sounds like there might be something wrong, like a stuck button or some software issue perhaps, in which case taking it to a VZW store to see what they can do might not be a bad idea.

I must say. I went for the u740 because of the QWERTY keyboard. But I am unimpressed so far and will most likely return it nest week.

I am here at work sitting on the same desk I sit everyday. With my old Motorola E815 I would get perfect service here.

With the u740 I get 0, nada, zip, reception. I call myself and goes straight to voice mail.

Then, yesterday driving back from work on the highway, couldn't make calls, as the service was very weak. The service indicator keeps chaning from no bars, to 1 bar, to 2 bars, back to 0.

How do you guys deals with such bad reception?

I don't get bad reception on mine. I just switched from a 815 to the 740 myself, and haven't noticed much of a difference in reception, at least not a dramatic one. I do know the 740 is immeasurably better with it's signal than my fiancee's Razr. Perhaps you have a bad phone? Did you try updating the roaming?

Whenever I try to call someone (even when I have perfect reception), it goes to the "Calling...." screen, and never dials the number or connects. Also, when I receive a call, the phone rings, and it shows who is calling, but when I open the phone, it goes to the screen that says "Call silenced. Answer or Ignore." Also, when trying to send a text message, it says something like "Connection failed."

Does anyone know what this could be?

A simple restart seems to have fixed it. Funny I didn't think of that earlier.

Can anyone tell me how - on the U740 - to transfer ring tones using an sd card reader? I have found that if I transfer an mp3 to my "my music" folder, it works perfectly, but anything I transfer to the "my sounds" folder doesn't show up at all.

I believe the sound file has to me a midi file in order to show up in the "My Sounds" folder. I tried putting some mp3's in that folder and they wouldn't show up.

a couple quesitons guys..im pretty new here..I just received a 2gb for my the u740 and a usb cord..I checked out a website and this is what i used.

Using an USB cable (Samsung PCB200BBEB) with software drivers (Samsung Mobile USB 4.40.7.0), BitPim (http://www.bitpim.org/), and a PC, I was able to unlock the phone and load my own ringtones.

I tried making my own ringtones and uploading them? does anybody have any suggestions?

I tried his method various times but couldnt seem to get anything to work..I also wanted to know how can i get my old videos and pictures from my phone that just broke..a new alias was just mailed to me..can I use any of the above programs to help me? I also downloaded Samsung Studio 3 as well but couldnt get anything to work..Somebody please help me outt..

hi guys
my problem with this phone (sch u740) is the phone is totally locked up, can't access the menu, can't call out, can't receive a call. i take the battery out, and put it back in, boot it up, and same thing, just the wallpaper, and can't do anything with it. is there some kind of hard reset i can do, that doesn't require the menu? i'm even considering the "drop it in my pool" tecnique at this point.

but now it just turns off randomly, whenever it wants. usually when its in my pocket and i dont know about but it has truned off when i was holding it and even trying to type a text message.
luckily it hasent shut off in the middle of a phone call yet.

also i cant auto-veiw any text message since my software has been upgraded.

my phone has already been back to the store about 5 times about the restarting issue, i was planning on going back soon but im just dreading the idea of having to deal with them.

Did they replace the phone? Mine started this about 2 weeks ago, but on mine, if you are typing and hold down near the space or the numbers lock key, it will reset as well. I took it into the store and they said they will replace it for me no problem (got mine in march), but that they don't stock that phone anymore, so they'd have to mail me a new one.

Adding words to the dictionary is not supported.... but honestly... it has a qwerty keyboard............

first, if i load mp3 ringtones to "my sounds" folder on card. they dont show up. can i just rename them from xxxx.mp3 to xxxx.midi and save for them to show up?
second, i have previously used bitpm to load many ringtones/sounds to phones memory. (memory full) i have tried to delete sounds/ringtones and they wont play anymore(file size 0.0) but titles still show up in menu screen. can i delete sounds and ringtone files to clean up phone memory of old songs and then just use newer sounds saved from sd card above? is there a reset comand to clean up phones memory but leave my pics/contacts?

Could your card simply be set to be read-only (there's often a switch on the card or its adapter that can control that)?

Does anyone know how to factory reset this phone?

I have tried various FTM codes (027 & 073 will wipe the preloaded apps, 075 will wipe everything other than the pre-load apps). My issue is that it doesn't wipe the database, and for example, it still shows in the Phone Memory menu that "My Pictures" is 2kb even though the "My Pictures" folder is empty.

Also, 075 doesn't clear user's installed applications (such as Mobile IM) which is a problem because some apps (like Mobile IM) don't have a delete option. And yes, 073 will clear it, but that solution may be worse than the problem.

First off...this is a great forum! I've found many helpful hints and work arounds for the phone I just bought recently.

However, and my apologies if this has already been posted, how can I block the applications on my phone without removing them? I just got my first bill and I was charged for the data usage for accidentally accessing certain applications, even though I back out of them right away.

I don't want to remove this apps, I just want to block access to them so I don't get charged for only opening them for a few seconds!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Other than changing the shortcut keys so you don't accidentally hit them, I don't know of any way to disable the built-in ones. As for the downloaded ones, go through the menu and as you scroll through them, there should be an option option (uh, ya) where you can lock them.

I can't seem to scroll when I am using Mobile Web. The volume keys will let me go from link to link or 1 page at a time if there are no links, but that's it. The scroll mode settings make no difference. Is this right? Is there a way to auto scroll? Those setting must be there for something!

I've had the u740 for over a year or so now and I've went through two or three but the last two I have had when i set them to ring/vibrate they will only vibrate once and play the first 2 or 3 seconds of the ringtone then stop any way to restore the three set of vibration and ringing?

cause they have the alias firmware... only way to get it back is to go back a version of firmware.

I was using bitpim to transfer ringtones onto my phone. and i read on the forum how to put ringtones so they play on your front screen. I put a song in the folder through the "file system" thing on bitpim and the song wasn't the right format. Now when i go to "My Music" or "V CAST Music" it says not supported. When i try to hold play from the front screen nothing happens to the screen and all the lights flash red. (rewind play fast forward) The phone is a u740 with Verizon.

Is there anyway i can fix this? will flashing the firmware work. if so can you give me a link for instructions how to flash my phones firmware. I have a usb cable for it.

Soooo I've looked around and I cannot find a way to tether my phone to my laptop, the link on the post doesn't work.... any help? I want to use the usb thingy since my computer doesn't have bluetooth

Anyone have any luck sending ringtones through VZWPIX lately? I had sent a bunch with my first Alias, and as long as I kept them under like 100k and sent them late night, they always went through, but I can't even send my smallest ones anymore at 3am.

SO i have a Moto Q, i have had 2 since i liked the keyboard so much, im looking into getting a new phone and since 95% of the pda's now require a data plan, looks like im going to be getting a normal phone. My main concern is adding ring tones (read at the first post) but how many txts can this phone hold? Does is lag when you get too many, or is there a hex/seem edit that will up the amount of txts? With the q i have txts as far back as 3 months ago....idk why i keep them, but they dont use a lot of space! As for comparing this phone to the Dare, what do you guys/gals think?

hey guys, uhm i was just wondering if this had already been addressed, but i was wondering if i could replace the earpiece on the phone because i dropped it, and now i cant hear anything through it, also, is there a way to open up that part of the phone, [the part the flips up] so i can replace it? thank you

Sounds like it's been deleted, so you (or basically anyone else) can't access it since it doesn't exist in the forums anymore.

Does anyone know how to unblock text messages from a contact? I previously blocked someone (annoying dumb forwarded pic messages) and now I'd like to add them back. BTW, if you block someone and they send you a txt they get a message that they have been blocked.

Searched the thread with no prior results.

Is there anything I can do to make this phones bluetooth phonebook come across to the Garmin 265T?. The phone book on the U740 use to come across with the Garmin 660. I have upgraded the Garmin to the latest BT, and I don't know if I can ever get it to work. I remember with the Verizon Motorola 710 I did a seem edit, that allowed Blue Tooth to work, is there anything that I can do to make the Phonebook cross to the garmin?

Sorry but i just cannot find it anywhere. Is the a certain way to reset the phone i bought it off ebay and the guy selling it didnt wipe out the phone..i went to the Secuirty Tab and did a soft reset but he still has all of his contacts and messg. in the phone also a ton of bluetooth stuff...i was wondering if anyone knew how to wipe it clean otherwise i would have to go in to every setting a erase everything..not sure how much stuff i would have to filter though! Also does anyone know if there is a new software pack for this phone?

I had a working ALias, sold it on eBay. It worked fine on December 17th. I sold it to someone a few days ago and they are saying it won't activate. I had the face changed so I could sell it and I did use the Samsung codes to wipe out all phone info (http://u740.ca/testmode.php is the site I used). I think I used the code 027 to reset the phone completely.

The buyer claims it won't hold a call, so when they dial *228 to activate the phone call drops. Here are my questions:

1) could the replacing of the face by a cell phone store have broken something inside and that has rendered the phone BAD?

2) could have one of these codes done something to upset the phone?

3) if the phone was flashed, how could it not then work?

They claim they took it to Verizon for a software flash and it still didn't work. I need to look into that because they have told me over and over "since they didn't buy it from Verizon they are reluctant to help."

ANY INFO WILL HELP, PLEASE. THANK YOU!

I have spent quite some time searching the Internet and these forums, but have yet to fine a definitive guide with instructions on how to sync the u740 to BitPim via the Bluetooth interface. My phone is badly malfunctioning and I was hoping to sync my notes and other information to my computer before returning it. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. So far, in trying I cannot get the phone to sync up via either the "Serial (/dev/cu.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync)" port nor the Serial (/dev/cu.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync) port under the "comm port" setting within BitPim's preferences. Any help would be most appreciated.

Mine is set up to use com 5 in bitpim and when I use the bluetooth menu thing in the task bar I select bluetooth serial port. I hope that helps. There is a guide for it somewhere I unfortunately don't have it anymore. I think I had to install different drivers for my bluetooth dongle though. The site had a bunch of different phone guides and linked to these forums.

Also does anyone know how to get to the sound folder on the computer? I connect my phone and the Handset Manager program recognizes my phone but it won't appear under My Computer. I want to have the low battery alert sound as my text message ringtone

I had to manually copy off the information from my old phone before returning it to Verizon to get a new one.

The new phone is my by a revision compared to the older model. The sticker under the battery states "MODEL: SCH-U740 V". When I look under "Settings & Tools">"Phone Info">"SW Version" I see the software version listed as "u740.AF25".

I am not sure if the hardware was upgraded on the new phone or if my own phone suffered a mechanical failure, however, with the new phone, I am able to sync my phonebook/notes/photos/etc via BitPim. To do so I paired the phone with my system (Mac OS 10.5.6), started BitPim then under the "File>Preferences" selected the SCH-U740 in the Phone Type pull down and under Com Port, hit the "Browse" button and selected the "cu.SCH-u740-PhonebookSync-1" interface. This interface did not exist on my old u740. Once selected, I was able to sync the phone just fine.

The version of BitPim I use is 1.0.6.

Unless you hit end, the message will be sent, and it does display the sending message on the front screen. Not sure if it gives you a failed report on not, maybe try sending a message somewhere you know it can't go?

So, I broke my screen and got a replacement phone; same one. Now I have to go through and redo all my settings.

My only question is about texting:

I used to have the Auto-View option on, so when I receive a text, I can read it without having to open my phone or if I do open my phone, the message is automatically opened. But with my new phone, when I have this option selected, my phone does not ring or vibrate. If I turn Auto-View off, it rings/vibes, but I have to manually open the message (it says new text, but I have to click OK to read it).

Am I missing an option, or is this some bizarre occurance?

Maybe they made some change to the phones? My new one didn't have the same labels as the first one, plus I get better reception EVERY where.

EDIT: According to this thread, the latest firmware update does that. Since I bought my last one 2 years ago, Oct. '07, it would make sense that they've since updated the firmware, possibly giving me better service and the ever-problematic Auto-View issue.
