These are tested on U.K.-spec. P800 with R2D firmware, but should work on most P800 versions.)

These settings allow the internal browser to access normal web sites, and launch URL's from e-mail. Also includes MMS settings (sending/receiving) via NowMMS.

thanks for the update

I've read lots of posts saying that rogers doesn't have mms or won't until 2004. But a friend of mine just bought the panasonice gd88 from rogers and is using MMS.

he's got http://mms.gprs.rogers.com:8080 as the service center
and 172.025.000.107 as the gateway.

But this doesn't seem to work with p800.

Anyone else get it to work?

Posted by: TrueContext

Quite correct...it doesn't work. I tried these settings a couple of weeks ago.

It looks like it will work...you get the message 94/95% send, and then "Communication error: An error occured in the communication with the server."

I even called their data services group asking if I needed a different APN, or username/password for the MMS server. I received a flat "Rogers does not support MMS." Clearly the party line.

However, I don't see any advantage to using a Rogers MMS server at the moment. NowMMS is free, gateways world-wide to most of the major networks. It works sending/receiving MMS.

If you have a Rogers data access plan, there's no need to use a Rogers MMS server... in fact, there may be a disadvantage to using Rogers MMS - the fact that most operators have to sign MMS gateway agreements with other operators. Good chance that if Rogers has MMS, they aren't passing it to too many other neworks.

If you have more details of the WAP configuration on the GD88 used with MMS...that could help. Look for a different APN, WAP account specific to MMS, different login details.

I was just going over settings on my friend's phone because he was having internet problems and it wouldn't work with this ticked so i un-ticked it and it works fine now... however I have this checked on my phone and my internet works fine. What is the purpouse for unchecking this?

Thanks!

The internal browser in the P800 is not just a WAP browser...it's capable of WML1, WML2 (XHTML), HTML3.2 and (I believe) cHTML. What it is not capable of is HTML4 (frames, layers, advanced CSS, etc.) or JavaScript. The internal browser can run over either HTTP or WSP protocols, and can parse text WML.

The Opera browser on the other hand doesn't handle WAP well - but it does to HTML4, CSS1/2, JavaScript, and is very good at dealing with "street" HTML and laying out content in a readable fashion - better than Pocket IE on a Pocket PC.

If you set a preferred WAP account, the internal browser will attempt to load all bookmarks via the WAP gateway/APN (Rogers goam.com). Thus, most normal HTML pages will not load.

If you don't set a preferred WAP account, the P800 will attempt to use the default _internet_ account, which in the settings above is set to a generic data (internet.com). The browser will then be able to load HTML pages...it can also load text WML pages directly. There is some penalty for doing this...as the WML has not been tokenized by the WAP gateway....so you transfer more data. But WAP pages are still smaller than most HTML pages anyway.

By allowing the internal browser to use the internet account, then URL's in other applications (such as mail) will work...as long as they don't need JavaScript.

Another advantage of using the internet account is that you don't have to keep switching between Rogers WAP and Rogers GPRS settings....for the most part you can just use the Rogers GPRS settings.

Only exception is certain WAP pages which must load via the WAP gateway. For these pages, you can specify within the bookmark itself to use the Rogers WAP settings. Rogers own home page is an example of this. My bookmark entry for Rogers home pages is as follows:

Location: http://www.mymobilehomepage.rogers.com
Name: Rogers My Mobile
Folder: Bookmarks
WAP account: Rogers WAP

This will automatically use the WAP Gateway, or request that you disconnect from another connection first.

Ideally, there should be an option that allows you to set Opera as the default browser, and just use the internal browser for WAP content.

Posted by: redmontondave

I have set up my P800 as outlined in the posts and I can comfortably browse the net.

But I am unable to use opera, VNC or email pop3 or imap.

I maintain my own mail server.

ANy idea's? It is really a pain forwarding email to sms... too much truncation.
thx

Dave

Wirelessly posted (SonyEricssonP800/R101 Profile/MIDP-1.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.0)

does anybody know how to set it up to retrieve hotmail headers through rogers?

Posted by: DrunkenMonkey

I put all the settings in except the following (its not in my phone) and my wap doesn't work.

i guess i should give a little more info.

I try accessing a wap site and the counter at the top counts up to three and stops. The world icon at the bottom comes on for the same amount of time. There aren't any errors on the screen.

What can be wrong?

Posted by: DrunkenMonkey

All fixed.

Apparently Picture Messaging interferes with the wap settings. Once C.S. took it off ... my WAP worked.

Posted by: HOK

I called the Data phone customer serive rep and they said i needed a reflash for the phone to work in canada... and he said that each country has a different wap network... i'm like YEA RIGHT.... but he refused to give me any details on the settings of WAP for rogers... does this really work? because it seems to be bogus...

Posted by: DrunkenMonkey

I used all the setting that are listed on the revised post and everything works 100%. Then call customer service and ask them to re-initialize your wap/internet account and take off picture messaging (if you have it).

See if that helps.

Posted by: redmontondave

Hi All,

I used the second config listed, call CS and asked them to turn off mobile picture service, and reset my accounts.

Now all is up.

Cheers

Dave

Posted by: netcbc

stupid question but do you have to pay for all the internet and e-mail usuage?

Posted by: ynohtna_lude

sorry to bring up an old thread but I've been wanting to get this going for a while... Haven't cared enough until now. I have tried a few times in the past but I always get the Initializing... then 'Not Ready' Error 2-3secs later in Opera. The standard internet browser tries for 3 secs and just stops.

My phone firmware is still R1D and I notice I don't have some options as posted, such as 'Log in->Password request off'

Also, I've yet to talk to a CS that can even take off picture messaging. Keeps saying it doesn't exist or it's not on my account. They reset my account my removing the mobile internet thing and re-adding it.

Any ideas? Anyone with the same firmware as me with it working?

Thanks, comments appreciated.

Posted by: redmontondave

I was able to obtainall the settings from a Rogers rep.

Mine is working without difficuly now on that network.
Good luck.

Posted by: ynohtna_lude

well it does work, but I have to go through roger's 'navigate' wap portal...

I was hoping for some direct data connection to the internet so I can use my instant messengers applications (msn, icq) which is what I thought internet.com was for but it appears not to work. I just talked to a rogers data guy yesterday and he acknowledged internet.com but said it's not available yet but should be in 4-8 weeks because they will be getting the P800.

So does yours work but only through goam?

Posted by: rogho

Yes, me too, goam.com works., but the internet.com doesn't.

Go check on the Rogers.com, there's two type of internet access plans. One is Navigate Mobile Internet and the other one is Data accessing blablabla...
seems if you subscribe the Date Accessing plan, then you can use the internet.com

I am wondering what are the differences and why Rogers sets prices differently. The Navigate Mobile Internet plan is like $3-- 0.5mb/month, $7 -- 1mb/month and $ 12 -- 2mb /month.
But the Data Access is minimum 30$/month and it's like only 2mb of DL/UL. 10$ / extra 1 mb. It 's VERY expensive!

ok i just put in the settings on my P900, exactly as this thread says. with out putting in the MMS settings. and i still can not get it working.

can anyone help me out plz.

these settings work: i have used them on both my p800 and my p900

you MUST be on a data pkg costing $20/month or more in order for rogers to activate the internet.com apn... me? i'm switching to fido (better data rates)

The Setting work perfectly on my Sony Ericsson P900. Thank you very much.

I set up based on the (second) revised version. I couldn't find a set up for mail account (pop3) on a non-Rogers mail server. Could someone please post an example ? Do I have to use rogers smtp server and if so which ?

I am in the same boat with P900. When connecting to my (unix) mail server, it sits there, showing "connecting (mu ip address) for several minutes and then it times out.

The system log on the mail server doesn't show any connection attempt, so I assume that it never gets that far.
