has anyone else noticed this on the v3xx?

Sometimes when there is strong 5/5 3g signal outside and i go inside it switches to edge... to be expected i guess, but sometimes when i come back out, it doesn't swtich back to 3g, not 5, not 10, not 20 min later. It takes a reboot. and i do have the latest 3g sim. After the reboot, i'll have full 3g reception again... it's like the phone doesn't even bother to search for the 3g signal. (this happens in sd in case location makes a difference). What do you guys think?

It's not confined to the v3xx--it happens in all of the 3G phones. It can really be a pain in weak signal areas because the phone will take FOREVER to switch back to 3G. Until the entire network goes 3G, I imagine this will be a problem due to difficulty in the "hand off" between the 2 different technologies.

thanks for the info. i'm glad to here it's not my phone

Wirelessly posted (MOT-RAZRV3xx/96.71.95R BER2.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; 11063081) Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 Opera 8.00 [en] UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

Mine has only switch to EDGE a few times but when I end the call it would switch back to 3G within a few mins.

Yeah buddy it sure feels good to know it's not just me!!

Now that I think of it IMHO I believe the V3xx has the truest signal indicator of the 3 (Cu500, and Sync).

I'll just be glad when 3G matures a bit more, and they raise it from 1.8 to 3.6. That day will ROCK!!!

Once Cingular puts UMTS on 850 MHz (rather than just 1900) then this will be less of a problem and 3G should work indoors as well, since 850 works indoors better.

definitely depends on your market as well--in Atlanta, I get better performance than when I've been in Tampa or Columbia SC.

Well, this has not been the case for me. My 8525 will switch back to 3G with no problem at all. As soon as it sees UMTS again, it is back up and running. My v3xx, however, will not. ALWAYS requires a reboot. So, to the person who said it was true of all 3G phones, I think not....

I am thinking about sending it back to Cingy for a replacement, or just going to a straight GSM/EDGE phone for weekends...

no problems here. mine goes to edge then right back to 3g.

In one particular area I spend a good amount of time at I can see the phone switch between GPRS/EDGE/3G all the time, but it usually goes rather quickly.... 3G/EDGE

I've noticed that there are times where the phone will say it's on EDGE after a hand-off, but will still post 3G speeds. I tested it once while running a virus scan for a client: the phone displayed EDGE, but my reported speed from testmy.net was 1MBps.

Posted by: Maverick05

after all that's been said here it sounds like a regional network problem because my 8525 does the same as my v3xx so it's definitely not a phone thing. i guess it varies from area to area depending on the network. work what it's worth i'm in san diego when this happens

ive done the same on the phone browser.

I think it's a regional thing.. at home I get slow handoffs to EDGE and back. But this weekend we drove down to San Diego which is completely 3G, got super fast speed and if it dropped to EDGE, it pops back to 3G right away.

Is that the plan? Do you know when that will happen?

I just realized my new V3xx does the same thing. It will switch to edge during a phone call and not go back to 3g unless I reboot.

From what I've read browsing the Cingy forums, that's the plan. Supposedly once they deactivate AMPS/TDMA they'll have more spectrum to devote to HSDPA on 850.
