Repercussions of flashing your phone

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

first of all hello. I'm totally new to this phone modding stuff. After browsing the site initially in December when i got an w810i and finding the youtube video of this guy with flash menus, I'm finally seriously considering doing it. But, I still have some questions, because i'm such a *****

1. If during the flash process it fails for whatever reason, what happens to the phone? Is it unusable until a successful flash? How would I "fix" it so that I can take phone calls again, assuming it's rendered useless after a failed flash attempt?

2. Since I've read that many have to try multiple times for it to be successful, many (for some reason) because their battery didn't last the entire flash process. Is this because they didn't charge it fully or is it because it really does take that long? Do you really have to rely on luck for it to flash it before your battery dies out?

3. Was it worth trouble (assuming you succeeded)?

I eagerly await your responses. bye!

1 just keep flashing until it works.

2it took 3 times for me. first was 13hours then 2 hours then 10 mins.

3 yes

thanks for the reply.

in saying "just keep flashing until it works", does that mean that once you've committed to attempting to flash, it's a "successful flash or your phone is done" scenario?

1. sorta, if you don't have the correct firmware and/or filesystem, it won't run
2. depends on your luck and instructions, if you have cingular, da_g's instructions work great, on first try
3. sure is, once all the kinks are ironed out

Hey I just finished flashing my phone and it worked great! But the E over the bars won't go away? It use to only come up when I was on the internet? any suggestions?

Isn't there a way to break into the phone without having to bruteforce for the w810i? moosefan, you can change that in the settings menu.

its not like i was awake or something.
why pay for something i can do for free?

okay I think I'm going to go with da_G's tutorial. Thanks for the recommendation All I really want are longer ringtones and the flash menus.

2 more questions before I begin:

Has anyone actually "bricked" their phone while trying to flash it?

What are the chances of me totally screwing up my phone during the process?

follow it religiously, and go through it once to make sure you know what you're doing and familiarize yourself with the process, probably close to 0% failure, make sure you back up your phoen too
once you go through it once, you understand and can make your own customizations pretty easily

Thanks Accurim,

I was trying to figure out how to fix my problem with not being able to send out txt messages, etc, I changed the settings to use GSM and EDGE and EDGE..interesting would have thought those would help speed up message sends/receives.

update: I did da_g's way of flashing and it has been as borat would say, "GREAT SUCCESS"!

thanks for the words of encouragement guys!

Granted, All i wnated to do was have the ringtones and flash menus, I hvaen't screwed around with it much. THe only customizations for the list that da_g had in his tut I did were the customize.xml, layout.xml and the flash menus.

One thing I did notice was that the video performance at the flash menus was noticably slower/laggier which I guess is to be expected, right?
