C139 anemic?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I got my mom the free Moto C139 for the upgrade of the Free2Go account she uses (She does not Txt, use media, need camera and makes only rare emergency or LD calls). She tried to make calls several times without success (She didn't know what she did wrong, and didn't indicate an error message). Now, I realize that there is likely some User Error, but she didn't have near as much problems with the old TDMA Nokia's. So, I left her my Nokia while I took the C139 to check it out.

I am unimpressed with this phone -- It takes holding the END key twice as long as the V551 to turn it on and off. And, when you turn it on, it takes forever for the noisy animation to finish. I then see no signal, then full bars --- and then says "searching" -- before it finishes the backlight goes out. Activate the light and it continues with "Please Wait". Boot up time is 45 sec to 2+ minutes!

Is this normal for this phone? -- and for MOTOs in general? I find the UI less friendly than the NOKIA for Mom. I asked over in the MOTO forum, but got no response....maybe someone here can advise?

Yes it is normal for that phone.

Actually most of the gophones in my experience have a pretty slow start up (pantech being the quickest).

So the C139 is as slow with TMOB as well? Are the new low end Nokia's as bad? Any recommendations on a good phone for a senior that needs one that has an easy UI, does not need camera or data? I noticed she was looking at the Razr, but I hate spending that much for a phone that might be used a handful of times a month...I could buy a better phone for her, but she will insist on paying and would not understand paying very much for a phone when there are constant ads about "buy 1 get 4 free" She only agreed to get a cell after experiencing Hurricane Charley...

I usually sell seniors or the like the samsung c417. Sure it has a camera and bluetooth but its a pretty reliable phone, very easy to use and has a nice large screen with a large font that makes it ideal for seniors.

While the earpiece volume on the c417 isn't the loudest I've found it to be much easier to hear as opposed to the razor.

For a cheap phone its not bad.

I am very impressed with the v3xx startup, it is quick as hell.

Never seen anything like the v3xx.

Thanks, I'll have to see what I can do about a C417. I have the C139 and played with it a little this evening. Couldn't find what I did with the manual (probably on the seat of the car), and still don't like it. Mom did make two calls today using my old 6340i and seems happy with it, but it is a bit big with not the greatest screen, so it is a short term fix. I'll definitely look into the Sammy.
Thanks again!

I just got this phone as a freebie.
It didnt come with instructions or a manual, so I have to ask:

There's a little pacman with a 1 next to it to the right of the time. What is that indicator?

I agree the C139 is a piece of crap. I wasnt impressed at all with how it worked... not even for a gophone.

CHeck out the Pantech C120 if thats an option for you. I cant say enough great things about it... but noone ever listens.
