Does it bug you to have Sony DUO instead of Compact flash or any other memory media?

Sure, big time -- but with everything the P800 is and does, it's not a deal killer. Just means I gotta limit my MP3's to 64kb/sec, for 4 hours of music on a 128MB duo, and my videos are limited to 2 hours per 128MB duo.

Sony screws people in regards to their proprietary memory schtick. Give me SD cards. Unfortunately anything Sony touches will be cursed with it...video cameras, digital cameras, pda's, etc.

I think Sony doesn't need anymore profit than what its pulling... Look at everything they sell... Sony Pictures (movie), Sony Music, Sony Playstation 2, Sony Electronics...I mean they really don't need anything more to fuel them...so they should've used an industry standard instead of their own memory duo? I guess its another way to make sure people use Sony only...anyway, my P800 will be here monday. can't wait !

I so wish they have some sort of CF Card MS DUO card adapter that would allow you to stick a CF card behind the phone.

The MS Duo is great for me. Most of my other products are Sony and everything works in harmony. MS Duos are still fast compared to SD and I like the speed of the transfers.

The proper title for this kinda thread really should be: "Does it bug you to have Sony DUO instead of Secure Digital?" because there's really no way you could get the CF form factor into this device. Well, maybe some day there will be, but not today.

But the phone could have easily supported SD cards, which are now coming out in 1GB formats, and Sandisk has one with 128 mb / 256mb AND Wifi built in (wow!).

Yeah, it bothers me greatly as a P800 owner to be limited to Sony's MS Duo format (and what appears to be Sony's Magic Gate DUO format - I've heard nothing about Non MG Duo cards coming out in the 128mb size - only Magic Gate versions, which are about 20% more expensive), but as someone else said in this thread, it wasn't the deal killer for me.

But I'm hedging on getting a 128mb card right now because I don't want to pay Sony Music a 20% premium on the already overpriced Memory Stick format for the useless MG licensing and profit sharing scheme Sony seems to have going. I might wait until Sandisk or Lexar come out with MS Duo plain jane 128mb sticks before buying (I might have a looooooong wait though - neither have announced support of the DUO format).

Have no worries -- you can load whatever you want on the 64MB's and 128Mb's. The 64MBs I have are Magic Gate, and I have played tons of MP3s I ripped from Napster days, as well as movies I DLd from Kazaa

@JeffHarris

Yes, I agree. I'm picking up my MS70D on Monday and I think that the MSDuo is one of the best formats created. The fast transfer speeds and the sheer size and weight of the MS Duos are excellent for data.

Are there any sort of WiFi MS Duos supposed to come out? Or does their choice of this memory format mean no chance at any sort of connection to the Internet save for GPRS? For me that's the big killer between Duo and say SD memory.

I didn't mean to imply you couldn't put normal MP3s on the DUO Magic Gate sticks - you can, and the P800 has no Magic Gate functionality built into it currently, so it ignores the MG portion of the card.

But you do pay a premium for the Magic Gate versions of Memory Sticks; I seem to recall a portion of that premium is a royalty payment internally (in Sony Empire) to Sony Music (or RIAA, I can't remember). Magic Gate is around 20 to 25% more expensive than standard Memory Sticks. That's a big gripe I have with the technology; on top of that MS is some of the most expensive per MB media out there even in the plain jane format.

And when I'm in England, I have to add 17.5% to whatever I buy, to help support their social services, which is of no use to me. Those who have the powers, get to say what they take !! I do it in my business, too -- when I can !!

it bugs me that i can't even get a "DUO" in the Sony Stores here in TO

Posted by: jeffharris

Even in the Sony Style in NY, you can't buy Duo's -- nor will they be carrying the Sony Ericsson phones! But that's not saying much -- last November, in Japan, you could find 16MB duos all over the place, but the Sony Style in Osaka didn't even carry it (wasn't in the Tokyo one). But they did carry SE phones At Sony in Osaka.

that's it...i'm moving to HK

where can i get those magicgate duo's in TO?

thanks.
