The Motorola Ferrari MAXX!

I just got my Ferrari V6 MAXX fresh from the Ferrari Store from UPS yesterday, so here are a few snapshots and a brief description of it. I reviewed a regular Hong Kong version of the MAXX earlier, so I won't go into too many generic MAXX details.
Here are a couple of shots of the box. As you can see, the 850 MHz frequency on the label was crossed out with a marker. The box itself has a Ferrari holographic sticker on it like every other officially licensed Ferrari product I've seen.

The box contained an Italian owner's manual and accessories pamphlet, two-prong European charger, USB cable, headset, Motorola key fob, a red leather sleeve, and of course the phone. Contrary to other reports, it did not come with a 50 MB MicroSD card. The leather sleeve is fairly nice. It has a suede-like texture and has the Motorola logo embossed in the lower right hand corner of one side and the Ferrari shield embossed in the same place on the other side. It has a draw string, but the leather's stiff enough that it won't pull shut.

The phone itself is virtually identical to the regular MAXX. It just has a little Ferrari logo on the front, which looks like it's behind the glass and shouldn't scratch off; and the Ferrari name in silver on the battery cover. The ring lights and music keys are blue just like other MAXXes, and not red as early photos showed.

The phone makes an F1 engine sound when it's turned on and off, and shows a somewhat crappy looking Ferrari shield when it's turned on. They could have done a better job with that picture. There are no Ferrari ringtones or other sounds, but a bunch of wallpapers are included, mostly of Ferrari Challange race cars, and some closeups of various parts of the street car. Included applications are a Europe-only eBay program, Block Breaker Deluxe, Platinum Sudoku, and a couple of Motorola programs: Setup and Text. It's a small improvement over the Hong Version. The menu icons were arranged a little differently than the HK version, but they can be customized. The voicemail indicator worked fine with T-Mobile without any hacks. This one also has a red light between the flash and the camera lens that flashes when the video camera is recording. The HK version didn't have that, although the manual suggested it might.

Overall I really like the phone, especially since I think the regular MAXX is one of the best phones out there, but whether or not the Ferrari edition is worth the extra price is up for debate. I was hoping for something more along the lines of the Vodafone Sharp 902 Ferrari edition, which had customized icons, a red paint job, and a racing game, but none of that's here. If you're a Ferrari nut, the red leather sleeve, logos, and wallpapers just might be worth it, though.

You probably can simply add a couple of Ferrari stickers to a regular Maxx and upload a sound bite of a Ferrari starting up and save yourself a couple of bucks?
Just a thought

Once someone makes the Ferrari firmware available to download, yeah, you really will just need a couple of stickers!
