Haha! Awesome! I have the SlingPro, I guess they are already coming out with a new one already. I like the white. Wow, I really love the Pearl form factor as I am sick of this brick-arse Treo. It sucks I'd have to pay to get a new version of SPM but I can deal if this Pearl is all it's cracked up to be. Thanks HotRod!

This thread has been quiet for a while. Any new info on the Pearl of the Curve?

Posted by: Vatothe0

Pearl 2 should be in November. No word on a Curve.

Posted by: jivemastert

Is there a definite November release for the Pearl 2 or is that just speculation?

Posted by: Vatothe0

The current planning is for a November release, not speculation.

I'm impatiently waiting as well, I'm tired of carrying 2 phones.

Posted by: geekgrl

i heard nov too. and i can't wait finally bye bye enV!

Not that I doubt you - but can you provide a source for this info?

Posted by: Vatothe0

I work there.

Posted by: umanben

the best sign at the moment seems to be vzw not waiting to get rid of older style berries (i.e. 8703e when the 8830 came out). at least that gives us more hope than those still waitin for the 6800.

Posted by: jsprewell

I recently went to a Verizon store to ask about the suretype on the 7130e so I could get a grasp on how good it would be. I mentioned that I was planning on getting the 8130 when it came out in November. The guy didn't know anything about the phone (no one else in the store did either) and I'm not talking about when it would be out etc., but that the phone even existed. I pulled out that (supposed) Verizon powerpoint document to show him what I was talking about. I expected as much because they didn't know anything about the Moto Qm until 2 weeks before it came out.

Anyway, everywhere I have read online points to a November release. My deal is when in November? I thought I read somewhere that Sprint is getting the Pearl2 at the end of November? Would this mean that an end of November release is more likely? (Besides the fact that most of the new phones coming out now for Verizon are at the end of the months)

All of this is speculation of course, but I'm kind of wondering because my contract is up in the middle of November so would I have any problems if the phone comes out at the end of November?

i love how you brought the powerpoint slide with you!!! awesome.... nothing is funnier than seeing how little they know about their own pipeline.....

Posted by: Vatothe0

Even if they did know about the phone, they aren't allowed to talk about it. Stores have more important things to focus on, like selling the phones that are in the store.

Well, there have been reports on other forums that a CDMA version of the Curve (8330?) will be out in "early 08".

I was in a Verizon store the other day shopping for phones for my wife. He asked about my cellphone and I told him that I was waiting for the Pearl that was to come out in November--"Right?" He said, yes the Pearl is coming toward the end of the year--I could not make him commit to give me the release date though.

If by "early 08", you mean early Q2 2008, you'd be about right.

Rumor is that Johnny Depp will have a black Pearl...but I have no way of confirming that. Just got that off a pirated site...

I second your skepticism and raise the issue of marketing cannibalism.

No no. It's true.

Several of these phones were delayed due to the Broadcom issue a while back, some have been having a lot of problems in testing.

Pearl 2 is set for November 1 right now for sure though.

VZW employees are attending training classes for new price plans launching Nov 1st. Last time we changed plans there was no training but this time there is so I'm assuming the changes will be substantial.
After I attend that training in a couple of weeks I will elaborate a little more.

Posted by: fumblerooski

In reference to my earlier post and for anyone else who cares I found this over at BGR:

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2007...-to-blackberry/

Not having a Sling Client on the BB was a huge road block for me on this device. Looks like that won't be a problem for long.

I thought we were supposed to be getting the Pearl 2?

Posted by: liquidplatinum

I'm pretty sure that's how long until they announce the release. They haven't even started to hyped up the release of the 8130 yet and word is that they are going to market the hell out of it. I think this is the beginning.

Posted by: fumblerooski

Since you cannot find a direct link to that "teaser" on their website I think this may be an internally leaked tool that signals the beginning of the marketing blitz. The question is...why hide the phones? This also seems pretty elaborate for an internal document.

Nothing about this makes sense to me. One thing for sure...releasing this to the public as the countdown to the beginning of the marketing/release hype makes absolutely no sense.

Posted by: liquidplatinum

A lot of VZW's internal docs are pretty elaborate now with flash and all that. All I know is I'm about 99% positive all 4 of those devices aren't going to be released in 4 or 5 days.

well the picture in the teaser is definately of a pearl 2. If you compare the pearl and the pearl 2 youll be able to tell its a pearl 2 in the teaser.

Well, if I can tell my parents to wait, and if VZW does drop BlackBerry pricing to the $30-35 range since I don't need BES they've earned our business, again...

hey all, new to the thread here. Can't wait to get the verizon pearl 2. Then I may finally be able to carry one device! -- I carry a t mobile pearl now just for my BIS email.

So what's the latest word on whether the Verizon Pearl will have GPS?

It sounds like Sprint's will definitely have it according to the blogs.

It will most likely be just like the 8830, disabled and waiting for Verizon to release a BB version of VZNavigator.

My Corp Verizon rep told me that the VzNav will be released for the 8830 around the same time as the Pearl (8130) launch in Nov... The assumption is BOTH the 8130 and 8830 will get VZNav at that time.

Only time will tell if this is true or not.

Highly doubt it. If GSM Pearl doesn't have Wi-Fi there is really no chance the CDMA one will have it. Plus Verizon hates Wi-Fi. It takes money away from them.

I wish the Pearl had WiFi. That way I could use my iPod Touch with it when a WiFi connection isn't around. And in the city where I live, WiFi still hasn't caught on enough to be "everywhere". But then I'm just dreaming.

Doesn't the Moto Qm support WiFi with that WiFi card that slips into the memory slot? Could you do something similar with the Pearl?

Verizon has launched a teaser site with 4 new phones that will be coming out for verizon. The phones are shadowed and not much can be distguished about them, however when you move your mouse over each phone it moves a spotlight.... and you can definitely tell that the pearl is one of the new phones. It also has a countdown on the page as well which is currently at a little over 2 days until it runs out. Only time will tell what verizon has in store for us.

I'm just aggrivated that I didn't wait longer and hold out from getting the 8830. I love it but there are times that I would love to be able to to take pictures. Plus most people don't get the concept of sending mms to my email instead of my phone #. Guess ill end up selling my 8830 for the pearl.

Yea I was about to pick up the 8830, liked it alot (except for the camera) and was going to purchase this weekend until I saw the teaser site. I probably would have sold it for a Pearl, or hoped the Pearl came out before November so I could just swap it out.....

I am very interested in the Pearl but I have a question for BB users...is there any way to disable the "Wirelessly posted from my BB" and/or "Sent wirelessly from my BB" tag on all emails and posts? No offense to anyone else but personally I absolutely hate that.

OMG! Look what I found on BGR!!!

On Oct 1, 2007 @ 2:46 am, liquidplatinum Said:

If what I initially heard still holds true, the count down on the /next site will reveal one device at a time, obviously meaning that there will be four count downs. I can’t really say too much more than that…. Oh yeah, and the fact that the Pearl WILL NOT be released in 3 or 4 days or whatever is left on that countdown. My info is credible, HoFo visitors will recognize my SN….

What I initially heard may not hold true though. Everyone knows I just spew random info....

When logging into WAP version of the forums... like wap.howardforums.com, and posting will always show the browser info when you post...

Just like a few of the posts by VX83001GB which have "Wirelessly posted (Blackberry8830: BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)"

It does this if you are logging into the WAP site via a regular cell phone browser too...

To NOT have that... you'd have to use the blackberry's browser and log into the "regular" howardforums.com and post...

Then there is the AUTO SIGNATURE added when you send emails. It is usually defaulted to "Sent from my blackberry wireless hand held" or something like that. That CAN BE changed/removed... its setup when you config your email account used with the blackberry.

I work for Best Buy Mobile, and my Verizon rep came in and I asked him about the pearl on vzw, he pulled a brochure that had a picture of the pearl 2 in silver, model number 8130 next to it and says November 1st release date. I also called verizon's CS line and was transfered to sales and they also gave me the same information.

Here is the most informative piece of information i have read all day. As of this morning the 8130 is on RIM's website with the official specs. For all those who haven't gotten a chance to read the following here ya go.....

RIM Introduces First CDMA-enabled BlackBerry Pearl

The small, smart and stylish BlackBerry Pearl 8130 smartphone features powerful communications, rich multimedia, built-in GPS and support for high-speed EV-DO networks

Waterloo, ON – Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today introduced the BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8130, the first BlackBerry Pearl smartphone to run on CDMA networks. The new model stays true to the highly acclaimed style and compact design of the BlackBerry Pearl and comes packed with new features including communications enhancements, a striking new software interface, rich multimedia capabilities, built-in GPS and support for high-speed EV-DO networks.

“With its unique blend of functionality and design, the BlackBerry Pearl smartphone has been turning heads and winning praise from business users and consumers alike,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “The new BlackBerry Pearl 8130 builds on all the great features and aesthetic design that people love about the BlackBerry Pearl and offers an exceptional new choice for CDMA customers that are looking to upgrade their mobile phone.”

The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 includes all of the features that have made BlackBerry® smartphones popular among mobile users, including unrivaled email and messaging (SMS, IM, MMS*), web browsing, organizer and more. The new smartphone also expands on its communications and multimedia features and presents the entire offering with a striking new software interface.

ULTRA-SLEEK & STYLISH DESIGN
The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 features a sleek, compact design measuring just 4.2” x 1.97” x .55” and weighing only 3.38 oz. It provides an intuitive user experience through its trackball navigation system and RIM's popular SureType™ keyboard system. SureType -- which allows a narrower handset design while maintaining easy phone dialing and message typing -- has been enhanced to allow word completion, easier editing misspelled words and a built-in spell checker.

ENHANCED SOFTWARE INTERFACE
The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 features an updated visual interface and integrates a new font rendering technology that displays characters beautifully, with enhanced legibility at even the smallest point sizes. The new technology is evident throughout the visual interface, complementing the new look of the BlackBerry® email client, calendar, address book, task list, memo pad and web browser, while also enhancing other applications.

The BlackBerry® Browser is further improved with a new "Page View" option that displays a full web page on the screen along with a magnifying glass that allows the user to quickly and accurately point and zoom in on a specific area of the web page. Users can also press and hold the trackball to toggle between the "Column View" (which presents the web page in a continuous column for easy reading and scrolling on the go) and the “Page View.” The new BlackBerry Browser also provides quicker access to Bookmarks and History, and supports the 3GPP RTSP Streaming protocol via EV-DO, so users can view streaming video from sites like m.youtube.com.

RICH MULTIMEDIA FEATURES
The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 comes with a 2 megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom and enhanced flash. The new camera also supports video capture in two resolutions: 240x180 or 176x144 for sharing via MMS.

The media player now allows users to create and edit playlists right on the handset. Alternatively, users can manage their media files from their PC with the Roxio® Media Manager for BlackBerry®, which is included with the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager software. The Roxio software was developed with Sonic® and is based on the award-winning Roxio Easy Media Creator® 9, making it easy for users to search for media files on their computer, view and organize them, create MP3 music files from CDs, add audio tags, album art, create playlists and convert files for optimal playback.

Roxio Photosuite® 9 LE is also included – this comprehensive tool makes it easy to edit pictures and create photo albums. Pictures can also be cropped, rotated and straightened, redeye can be removed, and brightness, contrast and saturation levels can all be changed.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 supports the Bluetooth® stereo audio profile (A2DP/AVRCP), and comes with a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack so users can plug in their preferred headphones or speakers. The handset also provides the convenience of an externally accessible microSD/SDHC memory card slot for additional storage of music, videos and pictures.

BUILT-IN GPS AND NAVIGATION
The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 includes built-in GPS to provide out-of-the-box support for location-based applications and services*. BlackBerry® Maps, which can conveniently guide users to their destination, now includes a local search capability that allows users to find local businesses, such as banks, hotels and restaurants, within a short driving distance. The local search feature in BlackBerry Maps was developed with support from Google™.

Well, if they want to take the T-Mobile route of original pricing (which I don't see why not), most likely with a 2-year contract, it will be $199, 1-year contract: $249, full-retail: $349-399.

That's just my guess.

I'm going to be so disappointed when Verizon disables the GPS on this phone.

No. VZ Nav will be on this. If not initially then eventually. There is supposed to be an update for the 8830 too come Nov.

Wirelessly posted (Wireless: BlackBerry7130e/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105 UP.Browser/5.0.3.3)

Yeah, no GPS, no BT, camera is disabled, you have to get an unlock code to use the vowel keys and the code is $10 per letter.

Liquidplattinum, is right actually.

Posted by: kristina.kozak

Vanna, I'd like to buy a vowel please! lol

After seeing this device (online, obviously not in person) and playing with the blackberry 8830 I think I'm jumping off of the xv6800 ship and onto the pearl. Looks pretty sweet and I LOVE the trackball.

Safe to assume the GPS will be semi-locked, meaning only accessible to VZ Nav, and not to other 3rd party apps?

I've never had a Blackberry or any other smartphone but there is a strong possibility I will jump on the Pearl bandwagon when it comes out and while reading the GPS capability I was wondering if it would be locked down to only work with VZ Navigator. I hope my hunch is wrong.

Posted by: jwhite4304

I would prefer a unlocked gps mode but having used VZW Navigator for the past month, it is pretty slick and reliable. Has some very nice features and the maps are up to date all the time.

wait, if you can't "pre-order" the Juke until 10/9, what the hell is happening in 12 hours? And while we're at it...what is a "pre-order"?

It means you can get your name put on a list at a specific store and you will have one reserved for you on the release date in case of limited quantities.

I'm sure it was noticed. The problem, at least from what I've noticed from recent postings in numerous threads, is that you have become so flakey lately that you are no longer viewed as a reliable source. Don't shoot the messenger

Come on man, Sept 11 is way too early to post info on HoFo regarding November releases with out a visual aid. You're lucky they didn't bust out the Inquisition on you ("PROVE IT!!!", "Where are you getting this from?!?!?") [/sarcasm]

I couldn't resist, it was such a nice phone not to let people in on and knowing they would have to wait until next year for the Curve made posting the info all that much easier

Hi Omie.. good to hear from you. Just wondering why you are silent in the i760 thread?

here's a good question if no one has asked it before: Since the new pearl has navigator on it, might it be eligible for one of the Premium plans? 'Cause 79.99 for web browsing, email, unlimited messaging, etc. is a data plan I would actually be willing to pay for.

Dunno if anyone noticed but that countdown on the verizon page is up... they showed the 4 new phones to be released before Thanksgiving.

...and release dates here: http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Juk..._1-i_13674.html

Posted by: macflauaus

I'm with kristina. I'm on the shiny Pearl white bandwagon.

I was switching between this and the "Voyager" (blech!) and now that I'm seeing it, it just doesn't really appeal to me. Possibility of new MB data plans for phones, an HTML tack-on cost, and just some other things that aren't right. Plus the possibility (confirmed?) of new, possibly cheaper BB plans (hopefully with messaging in it) just makes it all the better.

BB Pearl, can't wait to meet you in March! (NE2 is then)

I love the new Pearl. I currently have a treo 700 (windows) and when I am on a plane I use it to listen to music while reading my synched news/info from Avantgo. Does the BB OS allow multitasking like this? If you are playing music, can you minimize the music app and use other apps?

I think I may be ready to ditch windows mobile...

I read a CNET review of At&tingular's current Pearl and it does say that you can listen to music while doing other tasks and if a phone call comes in it will pause the music and pick up where it left off when you end the call. Now keep in mind that was for the Pearl and Verizon's will be the Pearl "2" but I can't imagine they would get rid of a feature like that...then again...it is Verizon...

First of all, I'm not a dude. Second of all, I wouldn't be surprised by anything Verizon does. I wasn't saying they WOULD remove that feature, I was just saying that with Verizon, you never know what they'll change. I'm not hating on Verizon, I actually love their service and would never use any other carrier, so calm down.

Yes i currently have a blackberry 8830 and it has the ability to listen to music while you go and do other things such as surf the web and send emails etc.....

You need to add the BroadbandAccess Connect option for like $15 per month on top, right?

The BB os multitasks very well. You can play music and then switch over to another app, such as IM, browser, e-mail, etc and keep listening. Something else that is nice over WM is that you don't need to constantly kill apps to keep things running smoothly.

Yea I am inetersted in both the Pearl and the 8830. Anyone have input on either phone (I know the Pearl isn't out for VZW yet obviously, I mean the ATnt Pearl). I don't know if I could do without the QWERTY keyboard. IS suretype a *****?

Suretype is love it or hate it. There are those who swear by it and others that can't stand it. I think if you are going from a full qwerty to suretype you are more likely to get frustrated by it. Coming from a regular phone, suretype will be a step up and a lot easier to adjust to.

Posted by: ward66

other than camera (and sure type..) are the pearl and 8830 basically the saem thing, or does one have more or less features/programs than the other?

pearl has:
3.5 MM headset jack
suretype
camera
smaller design(MUCH smaller)

really the phoens are directed at two different markets, the 8830 is still a business device, the pearl is for the fringe users who want a BB device, but still want music, camera and texting.

Sure type is predictive typing. The blackberry "guesses" the word based on the key sequence you type. The nice thing, the Pearl has a "Custom Word List" to help its prediction. This word list grows as you as you continue to use it. It builds this list based on your emails, address book, and what you type. The custom word list is editable. You can add words, or remove words or spelling mistakes that it "remembered."

Sure type on the GSM Pearls is very good.

There is also the "double tap" method of typing... you hit the key twice to get the second letter on the key pad.

And you can toggle between the two input methods.

Posted by: ward66

mark,
thanks for the info, sure type is the "guess the word you are typing" not the method of using the 2 letter buttons....kind of like t9word or whatever its called, i never used that on my current or past phones, but maybe suretype is better.....

it is acctually pretty cool
I had a 7130 for a while, and getting started kind of sucks, but once the phone learns what you say commonly, and gets the words and phrases you use down...it gets pretty damn fast

suretype isn;t that bad, i like my qwerty, but the suretype is still WAY better than T9

And, of course the rep who added this fell through the cracks and didn't have this call monitored either. Its such a shame. I still say it should be a requirement in our call center that reps MUST read HoFo.

Any thoughts as to whether or not this will:
a) make it to the US
b) be supported by Verizon?

I've been trying to migrate to a smartphone that would let me sync up calendars with the lady... looks like Verizon will finally have the hardware, now we just need them to allow access to it...

*Verizon network
*MMS
*GPS/VZNav
*PDA apps
*calendar sharing
*slim form-factor

Are Verizon BlackBerries easy to hack to enable features... say, ala p2kseem on the MotoV3m?

I only know its a Blackberry requirement if someone activates a Blackberry phone on VZW. I will get in trouble if somehow I'm able to add a BB phone with either a PAYG or manage to block national/evdo coverage on one.

No. I don't think its a Requirement of RIM (the maker of Blackberries) to sell you a data plan.

It may be Verizon's requirement that SOME data plan be included/sold with every Blackberry... but that is about it...

I can get my users AT&T blackberries without data plans... heck, often they even forgot to add the Blackberry Unlimited data plan even when I order it AT&T allows for use of the Media Net plan on a Blackberry... its mutually exclusive from Blackberry Data plans (i.e. if you have media net, you can't add Blackberry data, so no mail, etc..)

T-Mobile also allows you to remove the Blackberry unlimited data plan at any time also...

In AT&T and T-Mo cases, without the BB data plan, the hand held works just like a regular cell phone.

You might want try the appropriate thread for that information. This is a Blackberry thread. Perhaps even PMing 0mie....

Does anyone know if Sprint requires a data plan with the BB devices, I mean beyond pay-as-you-go-plans? And from what I hear, the Pearl 2 is coming to Sprint as well (Sprint is my only other viable option for coverage...accept for Alltel I guess). No GSM networks here yet, or I would be the proud owner of an iPhone since it would integrate so beautifully with my MacBook Pro! Oh well...

I would ask in the sprint forum, they would be more likeley to know the answer about the data plan requirement.

It just amazes me. You'd think people with questions about specific devices/services would post in the appropriate forums. It kind of goes against the organizational structure that HoFo tries to keep in good order.

Back when I was an RSR I had a customer get extremely mad at me because he came in with a BB 7250 that had pay as you go data on it and wanted to upgrade to the 7130e when it first came out and keep the data pay as you go. At the time, we could technically put pay as you go data on it through a loophole (I loved i2k) but we were absolutely not allowed to do so. I loved it. That guy got so mad he threw his BB at the wall and walked out. It stayed in our safe for months....

I'm a relative noob with smartphones & BB and am seriously thinking the Pearl 2 will be my 1st BB experience soon as its released

Question though: Will the VZW Pearl 2 have Voice Recognition Commands such as the VoiceSignal software currently on the Moto V9m and many of the current VZW phones? I'm hoping to still be able to pair with my Moto H700 headset & use voice commands as I do with my V9m.

Sorry if I missed prior discussion on this in my search,

LOL...And pointing out this out sure helps to the "orginizational structure that HoFo tries to keep in good order"...good grief The question was legit to the thread and where the discussion had been going (see quote below). We had been discussing if RIM requires BB to have Data plans or if this is just unique to Vzw. Chill out and read the entire thread before flaming next time.

I'm not sure why you won't read my post #376....you must have a data plan with a Blackberry. I work for VZW so I'm not just blowing smoke or spreading false stories.

Anybody follow the 21 page sticky thread at the top of this forum? It is titled

PDA PHONES NEED DATA PLANS: Here they are. Quit asking.

In it, the argument rages as to the fact that PAYG IS a data plan. You have data service, it will just cost you a lot of money to use it.

If that is the case, why should I not be able to get my BB with a PAYG plan...

Last I checked, the name of the thread was "Verizon & Blackberry Pearl"

Am I missing how other carriers data plans have nothing to do with the thread topic?

I think Mark posted that as a general statement, not as an invite to start discussing other carriers data requirements....

You are not allowed to use your BB with a PAYG plan because that plan is not a BlackBerry plan. On Verizon's site there are two branches of data plans, one that goes to PDA phones (XV6700, Treo, Q) and then one for the BlackBerry. It's also a contract that VZW signed with RIM that says there can't be pay as you go.

Seriously people, let's keep the thread on track about the BlackBerry Pearl and not talk about data plans in general.

Will this phone have rev A?
I tried searching and didn’t see any mention of this in this thread.

Posted by: Null_Query

Apparently you didnt look hard enough.... I asked the same question a few pages back, and this was the response.

The GSM 8xxx devices (81xx, 88xx, 83xx) have voice commands... i.e. speaker indipendant voice activated dialing. It is provided by VoiceSignal (c) 2007

I expect the CDMA 8130's will have it too.

Posted by: Centsless

Can an experienced BB user who is familiar with the Moto Q please tell me what if anything about my Q I will miss if I move to the Pearl? Is it a good phone? Is it just as functional in other areas as the Q?

The 8830 has it too (VZW BlackBerry Worldphone). The 8130 will certainly have it.

The Pearl will almost certainly _not_ have Rev. A.

I need an autotext for this next part. All BlackBerry email travels through RIM's servers. RIM gets a cut of BlackBerry data plan revenue; it's not the same as data for any other data device. RIM gets a cut. You need the plan.

Is this due to a more consumer than business based marketing strategy??? They should still have the hardware capable to use Rev. A and then make a software upgrade availlable in the future if the demand rises for it....

Just curious, but how do you know with such certainty? The Rev. A chipset is likely less or equal cost to Rev. 0 chipsets by now. Those of us who would consider using the Pearl to tether are likely to see a performance boon in a Rev. A scenario...

On the other hand, knowing VZW, it's probably a marketing ploy to keep Rev. A out of the handsets for that very reason. A way to push more users to broadband access cards. <sigh> I hate marketing.

Forgot about that.. and considering my users keep hitting it by accident during the setup/training classes... i SHOULD remember that
