Official BlackBerry Pearl 8130 Pre-Release Thread

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I noticed that too... Kinda pissed me off.

Posted by: fredyoon

I tried several times to upgrade on www.verizonwireless.com by logging into my account, and clicking on upgrade to a new phone. I will have to purchase this at full retail which is US$ 319, and it wouldn't let me and said that I needed to call customer service.
I called customer service several times today and got bounced around. Apparently, since I got the BlackBerry 8830 online in May, 2007, you are only allowed 1 upgrade per 12 months and the system locks you out.
I got transferred to telesales, to customer service, to online support and everyone was saying that they can't order the phone for me because of this restriction, and that I have to wait until the 8th.
Has anyone else in the same boat called today to order their phones through a rep?

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

P.S. One guy on the crackberry forums said that he got his at a Verizon Wireless store in LA by talking to the manager. Could that be true in that I can walk into my local Verizon Wireless store and talking to the manager?

Posted by: ward66

fred,
i ordered an 8830 a week and a half ago, tried to go through the system and get the pearl for s&g's and i got all the way to the pay for it page, so i dont think there is a limit if you pay retail.....

Are people actually placing orders as we speak, or are you just pre-ordering them? I noticed that it's listed in the actual phone lineup, so it threw me off.

Yes, they are placing orders as we speak. I went to my local corp. store and they said they will be getting a shipment tomorrow around 2 or 3 and they can start selling it.

Sorry...can't find an abbreviation table, and haven't been around here enough to keep up. Can someone define:

ADD
ADC

I know NE2 is "New Every 2 years"...so hopefully you'll only think I"m 2/3 brain dead. Appreciate the info, or pointer to a doc w/the info. Thanks.

Same for me. Looks like Monday. Hoefully somebody will get one tomorrow.

This sucks. I came home to an email with Fedex tracking info. Send Fedex 2-day, with an estimated delivery date of Monday. Unfortunately for me, I am flying out of town on business Sunday morning and I won't be home until Thursday. Since they are only sending it from one state away (PA to NY), I am hoping that they might deliver tomorrow, or if it gets to my local Fedex facility then I can pick it up tomorrow night. Otherwise, I will need to call Fedex and tell them to hold the package until I get back.

Oh, wow! Wasn't expecting that. I'll check my store tomorrow.

ADD stands for 'Advanced Device Discount' and applies to when you add a data and voice plan above $79.99 (the combined voice/data plans). You get $100 off of the device price in that instance; if you just add a data plan, you get $50 off.

$299.99 Price of phone
-$100.00 ADD (instant, in store)
-50 MIR
------------------
$149.99 (just as an example)

I'm not familiar with ADC...if I had to render a guess, I'm assuming that they're calling it by its other name--advance device credit.

The employee discount site is so screwed up. When I go to my employee discount site, the i760 is available if I place an order as a new subscriber, but if I go in to try to upgrade my line, the i760 doesn't even show up.

Thanks very much...

ADC definition, anyone?

I updated my answer above after I thought about it for a few minutes. Most likely the alternate name--advance device credit.

Thanks...that sounds reasonable.

Gah! Now I have to wait until 11/29 to get my NE2 to order the phone...

The correct Verizon term is ADD, which of course is the Advanced Device Discount.

Sorry if this has already been covered (I read through all the posts so don't start yelling at me) but I was looking at the Verizon spec page and under the Phone Details page it says that the Pearl 8130 has "Ringtones: Polyphonic plus vibrate." Is it not capable of MP3 ringtones??? I am confused. The World Blackberry 8830 says that it is capable of MP3 MIDI & Polyphonic. If it has an MP3 music player shouldn't it have MP3 tones. Just wondering if it was an error made by Verizon. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks in advance!

Posted by: Redflea

If you believe this page, it includes MP3 ringtones.

Yeah I saw that and the BlackBerry Website lists MP3 ringtones as a feature but I didn't know if that was something Verizon disabled.

What - Verizon disable phone features!? Surely you jest...

;-)

I sure hope they didn't disable mp3 tones...that would be pretty annoying.

Go to ebay and do a search for Blackberry 8130 and about half way down the results page you will see where someone is trying to sell a "new in box" for a get it now price of $789.99. Are they crazy nobody in their right mind would pay $789.99 for this phone, not to mention if they really even have one to sell to begin with.....

Especially when the no contract price at Verizon.com is only $319!

there is a VERY GOOD chance that if it was sent FedEX Ground that it will arrive tomorrow.. depending on what time it actually left PA and where in NY....

When I've ordered accessories, they've shipped FedEx Ground and arrived over night from PA to MD.

There is a good chance my Pearl (courtesy of VCC) will arrive tomorrow, they said it was shipping today, and they usually ship overnight...

I got the same deal-- 2 day shipping means I'll get it Monday. It's being delivered in the same state CA -- but fedex 2-day says it's estimated to be delivered on Monday-- I wish they would do Saturday delivery-- I'll see if I can pick it up. It seems stupid as I'm pretty close to where it's shipped.

I didn't have to change my calling plan-- I'm on a family share plan 1400 mins, and did an upgrade. The rep told me I can add the $15 evdo tethering option for my laptop to get it for unlimited data on it.

Interesting (and useful for me at least) to see they are actually shipping orders on the Pearl.

I spoke with B2B (I'm a business customer) and they pre-ordered the device for me, but said it wouldn't ship until 11/08. Looks like I'll be calling back tomorrow.

That's what I'm hoping for. The package was picked up this evening a little after 6 and the Fedex facility near me where the final delivery comes out of is only 160 miles from the origination point (per Mapquest). And since the employee discount website still doesn't show the Pearl, I can't order accessories for it yet and get my 25% discount. I guess I will need to run over to Best Buy tomorrow evening and pick up a few things.

Posted by: jseah

Do you think it is a smart move to add the insurance to this phone? I am pretty careful with my phones...never had one break, dropped in water, get lost or stolen before, so I have never had the insurance on any of my phones. Although I have heard stories that the trackball on the Pearl is a weak point and is generally the part that fails on this phone.

other than a belt holster (instead of using the included pocket)... what accessories do you really need??

It can charge via the included USB Cable (assuming windows drivers are installed... install BB Desktop Manager, and they will be), it comes with a travel charger and wired headset... or you can use BT..

I've seen a few track balls recently that have collected dirt and stop working.. BUT I've fixed a couple... (push/hold ball down while rolling around)

Keep your hands clean and you'll reduce your chance of issue...

I wash my hands too many times per day my track balls are still white... my team mates... um.. their track balls are BLACK!! and they've had problems...

An earlier post said that the 8130 would be available today in corporate stores, is there any legitimacy to this claim? Any help would be appreciated as I need to return a new handset and exchange it for the pearl by the 4th of Nov. I have been visiting this sight for the last few years and this is my first post. I would like to thank all of you for your insight and posting of information, you have helped a lot. Especially LiquidPlatinum, you rock. You are the encyclopedia Verizon.

The web browser on previous devices support HTML, WML, and Java script. The 8xxx series devices (like 8800, 8820, 8830, 8100, 8300, 8310, 8320) support XML as well, so I'm betting the 8130 will too.

Keep in mind... The Blackberry Devices support/run JAVA apps... my other blackberries run Rim OS v 4.2 and lower... Java apps like Gtalk, GMail, Opera Mini and others all work fine... So I'm expecting the same with the 8130 since it runs OS v4.3.

Oh, and the 8130 supports SPELL CHECK!!!

Same here. Mine made it to the local facility in Baltimore. It hasn't said anything about being put on the truck yet. Does anyone know how to find out where the package is? I'm willing to go pick it up if its just going to sit somewhere until Monday.

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to get the contacts from my Nokia 6236i onto this thing? I've successfully exported them all to .vcf format with Nokia PC Suite, so I would hope there is an easy way to port them to the Pearl, since that is a standard format. I'm assuming that BlackBerrys don't have Get It Now, so Backup Assistant isn't going to be any help.

i live in NY so i thought it would be delivered today.... however it still just says picked up...

Posted by: fredyoon

Went to 2 local corporate stores this morning in New York (44th and Madison) and (42nd and 6th Avenue), and spoke to the store manager, and he had no clue on what the Pearl was.

Posted by: TheGodMachine

Ok this might be a stretch but here it goes:
I am buying a pearl today. I am getting the BIS 29.99 unlimited. My question is if there is anyway that I can connect it via bluetooth to my treo 700p so I can get data on my treo as well?
Would this be a bluetooth DUN profile or something completely different? I also have a samsung i730 and the required progrm runs on that as well, so if there is a problem with palm but windows would work I can do that.
I don't know that this is anything anyone would ever try to do, so sorry if this is really coming from left field.

Thank you in advance.

I was actually about to ask if the BB would accept wallpapers. I had the Q and wallpapers wouldn't work to well on it. This is my first BB and I have no clue.

So lets clear me up on this. The only way to get the cheaper plan is I have to separate my primary(me)line from my family share? Thats what the CSR told me. If I do that, I would be screwing myself because I would have to pay for a stand alone voice and then add the smaller data which would equal more then I am paying by staying attached to my family plan. Man!!!! Verizon is good at robbing Peter to pay Paul.

No, that is ridiculous. I have a three line family share plan and when I ordered the Pearl, all I had to do was add the 29.99 data plan as a feature to my line.

heh....feel like a little kid on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa to show up....

I want to get the belt holster, and I am also looking at the silicone rubber cover (can you use both at the same time?). I didn't know that the USB cable will charge the phone as well, that's good. That's one item I won't need to get. I do want to get a car charger though, as I do spend quite a bit of time in my car. I have a Plantronics BT headset now, although I am tempted/debating on getting the Jawbone BT headset. If their noise reduction is as good as they say it is, then it will be a godsend, as the problem I have with my current headset is it picks up ambient noise too well.

I really don't get why everyone is acting like this is so complicated. All you have to do is add the 29.99 BIS plan to your current plan.

My current plan is similar to your's. It's a three line ACII family plan. Setting this up was as simple as choosing the option, under features, when I ordered the phone.

The CSR you spoke to is clueless.

Fdex tracking shows that it arrived in Newark NJ just after midnight last night. No further update. I guess I will check after noon and if it makes it to the Fedex facility here, I will go pick it up. I am even tempted to make the hour drive to Newark to pick it up there.

EDIT: Just spoke with Fedex and they said that their rules with Verizon is that they have to make a first attempt at delivery unless they receive instructions otherwise from the shipper. And the package is still sitting in a trailer in Newark, scheduled to be sorted on Monday.

Anyone know why they decided to go with a 3.5 mm headset for the CDMA Pearl? In my experience 4-pole 3.5 mm headsets are rare so it will be hard to find a good replacement headset. Why didn't they just keep it 2.5 mm like the GSM Pearls?

I think it's great. Personally, I could really care less about using it for a headset. But, it does make it much more likely that I'll use the MP3 player on this phone, because I can use my regular headphones. I can also hook it up to the aux. port on my car stereo, which makes it so I don't have to carry two devices as often as I do now.

For me, the 3.5mm jack is one of the more attractive features of this phone.

So was it just a rumor that some stores had the pearl in stock? Any news of anyone getting one at a store?

Went to 2 of them this morning when they opened at 7 AM (on 42nd Street and 6th Avenue) and (on 44th Street and Madison Avenue) and they didn't know what I was talking about.

Thanks

Finally was able to buy it online this morning (through my wife's account) because I did an upgrade in 05/07 and I'm not eligible on my account. Called immediately to upgrade shipping, but Verizon changed their policy saying that we can't update shipping anymore to Priority Overnight or Saturday delivery even though we are paying extra for shipping.
Spent an hour on the phone this morning, with Verizon to no avail.

Agree completely. I have a bluetooth headset if I am going to be on the phone for a long period of time, and will only ever use a jack when using a good set of headphones to listen to music. I wish all phones had a 3.5mm jack.

I have never understood the preoccupation with speaking with the manager when going into the store. Usually the reps (or at least one or two of them) are much more on top of new products than the managers are.

Posted by: fredyoon

I agree, but it's just frustrating because I get the run around with Verizon on the phone, go into the store, speak to the manager, when I know that there are channels out there and some stores that have them in stock that are selling them.

yep, 4 pole basically means stereo sound and a mic for voice. Regular haedphones will work for listening to music.

Just take a new number and call into CS after the fact and they'll do the port.

Two steps instead of one, but very easy. No harm no foul.

I went into our local Verizon store and was messing around with the i760 a bit when a salesmen, whom I had worked with previously, came up to me and said they just got the i760 in but they were out of stock. He then told me "we have the Pearl too (my heart stopped), would you like to see it?" Of course I said YES, as I just about wet myself. He came out with one (fully functional demo) they had just received this morning. I quickly asked if they had any in stock and he said they wouldn't have any for about a week. For a brief moment I was so thinking I was going to walk out of there with a Pearl in hand!

After playing around with one in the store I am sold more than ever on this device, especially since they dropped the data plans. It is one of the most esthetically pleasing phones I have seen/used (that Vzn offers anyway).

Just got my Pearl

First of all, there was NO rebate in the box. It explicitly states on the receipt "Not Eligible for MIR" as well. It shipped with a half-charged battery, but I'm going to let it charge for a few hours before I start playing with it. A few pics:

Box, front and back:

Also, the included headset looks pretty cheap, and is nothing like the one pictured earlier in this thread.

Thanks, machpost...looks great!

Posted by: machpost

No problem... Also, there is no trace of VZ Navigator, or BlackBerry Maps, for that matter. Perhaps these will show up after I run the setup wizard and activate the phone.

Hi guys, long time lurker here. Just wanted to post this up...I ordered The Pearl last night at aroudn 6PM. This is the most recent status on the FedEx

Nov 2, 2007 8:00 AM

On FedEx vehicle for delivery

SUN VALLEY, CA

7:30 AM

At local FedEx facility

SUN VALLEY, CA

Nov 1, 2007 9:07 PM

Package data transmitted to FedEx

6:10 PM

Picked up

ONTARIO, CA

6:10 PM

Left origin

ONTARIO, CA

So it's possible to get the Pearl today for some people. When I checked last night, it was scheduled for delivery on Monday. I kinda knew that I might make the date today since my city, Burbank, is only about 40 miles from the place of origin, Ontario.

Posted by: wj4

Wow, my post is totally useless after mac's post, lol.

Posted by: Nitrate

I was thinking about ordering it.. but.. by the time i ordered it today.. it'll be just as easy to buy it in store on thursday

Argh!!! So, who is eligible for the $50 rebate?

Posted by: WebBull

Mine just shows sitting at local FedEx facility which is the same town as my office, not out for delivery

Posted by: cplclegg

So can I order at retail and get the ADD credit making out of pocket cost $219? I'd be getting the full BES plan because my company pays for my data.

Posted by: Humpa

I have to switch to a Nationwide plan to get the $29.99 BIS package.

So I just activated it with the $44.99 package for now, until I decide if I'm going to use the Pearl or the Q9m. If I'm going to stick with the Pearl, I'll switch to the Nationwide plan.

They wouldn't let me switch to the Nationwide plan unless I extended my contract - that doesn't seem right. I thought they did away with those damn contract extensions for changing plans.

Did anyone else notice that they removed VZ Navigator from the features description on the website?

What's going on? Does this thing have VZNav, or not?

Posted by: cellmet

Maybe VZ Navigator won't be available till the 8th? Just a guess.

Posted by: jdougal

I guess I'll be second to post some photos. Damn you and you faster FedEX delivery guy!

Phone next to it is the LG VX8700

Posted by: satanbugg

Does anyone know if any of the online, ADD or MIR discounts apply when buying the pearl retail? I called two CSR and both knew nothing. Just wanted to make sure before i press the submit button. Thanks all.

It looks like they don't, at least online or over the phone. Online, my line, tried full retail, no ADD discount. Did an upgrade on another line, $50 discount showed up (which I though should have been $100). for the ADD and no mention of MIR at all. I am going to try my luck in the store next week.

I ordered online this morning while I had a Verizon rep on the phone. She insisted the rebate slip was in the box, but to be sure, she mailed one to me as well. I'm covered either way.

Can anybody at least verify that this phone is vz nav capable by seeing the program on the phone itself?

Just to clarify, you are an existing Verizon customer and the rep told you that you would be eligible for a $50MIR?

Did you use NE2 and/or ADD credit as well?

Posted by: emeyer88

The phone just arrived via Fed Ex! Staring at the box now.

Posted by: satanbugg

I guess im outta luck then. I wont get NE2 till March. Any one had any luck getting discounts by signing new contract prior to the end of their current contract?

I guess 319 is not so bad. Better than buying the a Razr at retail.

Posted by: machpost

So does the Web browser icon magically show up after the phone has been activated?

No VZ Nav ... it says "coming soon" when I click on the VZ Nav link from the browser of the Pearl.

Well at least the option for it is there. Now hopefully it's available by next friday since I'm going on a long road trip and can certainly make use of it.

Yup, existing customer. Went online and the system gave me both $100 NE2 and $100 ADD. The rep said the $50 mail-in rebate would be in the box - she was adamant about that - but she sent me one in the mail to be safe.

So I'm hoping she's right which means this phone will cost me $50. Worst case scenario is the MIR gets denied for some reason, so the phone will cost me $100. Not too bad.

Here's a pricing breakdown 'cause I've seen lots of questions about it:

Sooooo, lets assume (like me!) you're eligible for NE2 and add the new 29.99 data plan when you upgrade.

2 yr Price: 299.99
-100.00 NE2
-100.00 ADC
________________________
99.99 (a heck of a good price for the new Pearl if you ask me!)

The real issue is whether or not there will be a MIR available when the phone launches in store, because it is not shown online as an instant rebate but many CSRs have mentioned it. Its not unheard of for a phone to have a MIR available in store but not as an instant rebate online, and more commonly we see phones with an online instant rebate not available as a MIR in store (often discontinued models or big promotions). Like I said, I remember some of the Treos in the last year or so having a MIR instore that didn't show up online. These are usually direct manufacturer MIRs separate from Verizon's own MIRs.

So maybe the Pearl will have a $50 MIR available when it launches in store. If it does, those who order online (where it doesn't show as an instant rebate) should be eligible to do this MIR.

Thus, 99.99
- 50.00 MIR
________________

49.99 for a new Pearl! If anyone says that price isn't killer, they're crazy.

I hope this help answer some pricing questions based on what you see online/hear in the store. I sure hope that it does get a $50 MIR when it launches retail.

looks right to me, i wouldn't worry, the CSRs don't seem to know what they're talking about when it comes to the pearl release and new data plans.

Does anyone want to take a picture(s) of the web browser? Additional UI shots, how is the VZW branding on the software (hopfully minimal if any). Any initial opinions on RF? How about battery life (if anyone's actually had the chance to fully charge theirs)!

It was my belief that this phone offered an unlocked GPS. I know the GSM Pearl had custom BB mapping software -- is that included?

Yes bb maps is included.

Posted by: dburks

Ok I just spoke with a CS rep and they informed me that If i wait for my NE2 which will be on 12/4 I will be able to get the Pearl for $50. This is the breakdown: -$100 (online discount), -$100 (NE2), and $50 (mail in rebate) so that is not a bad deal for $50 bucks.

I hope that this is true because I am going to wait untill 12/4 to purcahse the phone. I will let everyone know if this is true or not.

For all of those who are in early possession of this phone I envy you

I spoke to the Manager of the corporate store in Murfreesboro, Tn and they will be recieving their shipment of pearls in tomorrow. So i will be going to pickup mine tomorrow..... I'm so excited......

Posted by: wooster019

I phoned in my order today. I would have just ordered online but my NE2 was all messed up. Anyway, my rep had no idea of the 29.99 BIS plan so I walked him through that. He figured out my NE2 issue but then he told me that the ADC wouldn't apply to the $29.99 BIS plan. Thankfully I was online at the time and told him that my online account gives me the ADC of $100. After putting me on hold again he came back and told me that I will indeed receive the $100 ADC discount too. Then, to my surprise he said that a $50 MIR will be in the box. So, for $50 I got the Pearl. Had to press for it, but I got it!

All that to say thanks to everyone on here. Had I not spent time reading through these threads to know what the prices are for this device I wouldn't have pressed more to make sure they got it right.

I can't wait to get this phone.

Posted by: Null_Query

Also for those of you with previous blackberry's such as the 8830 or older am i interested to see how the switch device wizzard in the desktop software work with transfering all your contacts and pics and third party apps over to the pearl. Anyone who has/is going to do this please post your results

Interesting. I might swing by the store near here tonight or tomorrow.

Posted by: fredyoon

Anyone know of any New York City stores that have them in stock yet? One posting here says that the store in Southern Cali is authorized to sell them today.

The additional $50 MIR almost sounds too good to be true on top of NE2 & ADC!... machpost didn't get the MIR, it will be interesting to see as more folks receive their deliveries if in fact the rebate is "in the box" and if its redeemable but even if not, IMO $100 is an amazing price for the Pearl2

That's how I'm looking at it - $100 is a great deal for this phone, and the $50 MIR is just gravy on top. For those who didn't get a rebate slip in the box, call customer care and ask for one to be mailed to you.

Can someone speak to browsing speed once you have your Pearl up and running....I was playing w/an 8830 today in a Verizon store, and browsing was very pokey.
