Does Apple charge for repair for out of warranty iPods?

OK guys,

I have a 4th gen (one of them black and white ones, before they released the Photo one) iPod.

I bought it in Feb 2005.... and I also bought 1 year extra warranty from Apple. Both iPod and extended warranty were purchased in the US if that makes any difference, from an Apple Store.

Since buying it, it has been int he UK and I've had it replaced several times, mainly drive faults I suspect with it getting dropped or what not, each time I have replaced it, the iPod was in warranty, but now the iPod is out of warranty.

Last time I checked these things aren't worth that much on eBay when broken, so can Apple repair these things free of charge when out of warranty? I notice the Apple site asks for the purchase date, can I give a fake purchase date? The iPod that doesn't work at the moment is a refurb issued to me a few months ago.

I might just give all the accessories to my sister (she has a video ipod 5th gen) and sell this iPod regardless if it's too expensive to have it repaired - how much would Apple charge anyway?

Thanks!

1)It will do you no good to enter a fake date. They will have all the info on record..

2)They will not repair it for nothing. As for cost it all depends what is wrong with it.A few years back i had to send my nano in to get a new battery i did get charged $60 just for that. The min they charge now is $40.

So I may as well sell it then I s'pose - repairing isn't worth it,..... looking at eBay prices better to save up for a mp3 player that can take SD cards or something

Thanks for the help!

yep, not a problem-- the warranty is kind of a joke, actually apple will fix your ipod for free at any time, even if you dropped it or dumped it in a lake!

not true...if theres any dents on the aluminum casing on the video ipods or older gen ipods, it viods the warranty. also, if theres any visible water damange, voids the warranty also...although i must say that the genius bar raps that ive had the pleasure working with are normally pretty chill when it comes to that stuff...onece went to a genius bar casue my 4th gen ipod's HD failed, and when he was looking at it, discovered there was a dent (which i didnt see myself). he was awesome, and just said glad that he didnt "see" the dent either and just gave me a new refurb. apple rocks.

id deff goto a genuis bar insted of shipping it in...have a better chance of getting it replaced.

If you have a friend who works at an authorized apple store, they might beable to "backdate" a sales receipt.

Sell yours to the scrap yard and buy a new one.
