questions about the 3125

I just got a sony w810i and am not too thrilled with it. The battery doesn't charge past 87% and seems to have a pretty short life. The earpiece and speaker volumes are too low even turned up all the way, and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to fix this. Also when the phone goes into standby (this can't be disabled), the clock doesn't show on the display.

So, I'm thinking about taking it back for a 3125 instead. My questions are, how is the actual battery life on it? How about the call volumes? Since it's windows based, can they be raised or lowered through a registry key? On cnet they complained about the sound quality of the speakerphone. Is this a legitimate complaint or does it sound ok?

Does the clock show up on the external display all the time?

And in general, how easy is the 3125 to modify/unbrand/unlock?

The 810i got better ratings on cnet, but so far I'm not too happy with it. plus I think I prefer flipphones in general.

The 3125 imo is a good solid device if you prefer a flip phone physical format operating in the smartphone platform. MS voice command works well and I have never found the volume or speaker phone to be a problem in normal environments. Battery life is very good and you can get a couple days with moderate use. The device has been out awhile now and there is a lot of information about it here in the forums. Try a searching and you'll get a lot of hits. There is an "official 3125" thread in the smartphone forum that has a lot of information. Also see the cingular/pda forums. The clock does show up in the external display and you can choose the format. You should also be able to download a copy of the manual from the cingular support section on the web that you can look over before you make your decision.

i find it kind of odd that you're not happy with the w810's battery life as it is one of the better performers. is this going to be your first smartphone?

if you just got a phone and it will not charge past 87% you must have a hardware problem (either battery or phone). just exchange it. i have a w810 that i use as a back up phone and there is definately a sweet spot as far as in-call volume is concerned. if you dont hold it just right the sound level is very low. again, you might have a hardware problem that causes the volume to be too low.

that being said, my daily device is a windows mobile smartphone. i had the dopod version of the phone you are looking at and i loved it. if you prefer flip phones this is a great choice as the rf is good, sound quality is good and the cingular version has the extended battery so the life will be great. i personall like the wm platform and i reluctantly use my w810 when i think i might need a good camera, or i am doing an outdoor activity where i might want to listen to music or am scared that i might damage my everyday phone (snowboarding, jogging, etc).

yeah. I really didn't even want a smartphone. I just like the physical design much better than any regular phones. Sucks that cingular makes you get a data plan for these phones but I figure I can probably make use of the web browsing and email features.
