Is there anyway to lower or shut off the shutter sound?

Also, why can't you zoom in when in the regular picture mode?

look in the camera option there should be an option about the shutter sound.

The 8525 doesn't have optical zoom (i.e., a physical zoom lens). All it has is digital zoom.
You can't zoom in at full res mode because it doesn't actually *do* anything. All "digital zoom" does is enlarge a portion of the picture. I.e., make half the picture twice as big.

So, you can't zoom because... you can't zoom. There's no way to get more detail out of the same picture. Digital Zoom is a lie camera makers tell you.

If you reduce the quality level, you can use digital zoom. Don't use digital zoom.

Yep, your better off taking the picture, then Croping it on the PC and do your zooming there.

I'm very aware of the difference between optical and digital zoon. When you are in single shot mode, it won't let you use digital zoom, but it works in all the other modes. Is there anyway around this?

It's because the size of the captured image is only 1or2 MP in single shot mode. All other modes are smaller sizes, and therefore can be "zoomed in."
if you decrease the quality of the single shot mode to one of the "S,M,L" settings you can zoom.

This is explained in detail on page 161 of the user manual.
