Found this phone on ebay by mistake. Wondered if anyone knew anything about it. I figure it's an HK special, but it looks halfway interesting. Any background on the company or the quality of their products?

I'm living in Hong Kong, so I've been using this phone for almost 6 months.

I bought it for about $1280HK($165us/$128eu) in Nov. 06.

For this price, its quality is excellent, it comes with all functions you need, BT with A2DP, a decent 5 point auto-focus camera, MP3, Radio.

The photo quality is quite good indeed, i must admit it is not as good as SE K800i or Sharp 903, but, its performance outcast many branded mobile phones. A168's camera is a 2.0MP CMOS camera, and with the help of the software, it can take photos in 3.2MP. It's macro performance is the best I ever seen in mobile phones, it's even better than my wife's K800i. However, the flash is very poor, even worser than a candle, so, don't expect to take any photo in complete darkness.

like other brands, it may have some bugs, such as the touch screen may sometimes have no response when you set the screensaver with a gif image, and some users said they have a serious problem causing the phone into a looping status after sending files via BT to other phones and need to take it to repair. I'm lucky enough that i never encounter this serious problem. (Firmware can be upgraded by sending the phone to service centers.)

I'm quite satisfy with this phone, since it gives me all the functions I needed, such as radio, MP3, a very good snapshot camera, BT file exchange. i will say it's a very good phone for its price, however, if you require your phone to do more (but, i think your budget should increase too!!), you may have to re-consider.

Here are some drawbacks you may like to know:
- JAVA is poor, it only have 2MB for JAVA, so, you may not install much applications/games into your phone. And it's slow too, don't expect to play 3D games on it.
- For some strange reasons, I can't get my sent SMS message found in the "Sent" folder, so I can't keep track what I sent, and whom I sent. (I don't know if others have the same problem, or it's becoz of my old SIM card)
- It didn't come with any synchronization software, so, you may need to download 3rd party software to manage the phone book if you need to synchronize it with your PC.
- The to-do list cannot sync with PC, and it only have 10 to-do items for you to add.
- It didn't have any e-mail function, and its built-in browser is crap. (BTW, I installed JAVA opera mini to solve the problem.)
- There are 3 themes available, however, they are boring, just changing the color tones, and cannot add your own theme. (You can't ask more for such pricing, right??)
- It didn't have digital zoom except you're shooting in 320x240 mode.

I've been using a lots of branded phone, and I used to be a journalist on PDA/Phone field in the past, and I would recommend this phone if you're using it for fun than for business usage. It's quality is good for its price.

thanks for the review!! I REALLY appreciate it. I liked the idea of this phone as something fun and cheap. Make calls, listen to music, send the occasional SMS.

For SMS, is there an onscreen qwerty, or does it do a T9 input?

No T9, however, it has an on-screen keyboard, or you can input by handwriting.

BTW, just for your info, it has a newer model with keypad.

check the manufacturer's website for more details, D112's info are in-correct indeed.

i forget to mention, A168 has a very very good stand-by time, i've been listening to radio for about 8 hours, and running JAVA for about 1 hour, take some photos, and make about 10-20minutes phone calls, it only use 1/3 battery. and for my normal usage, the battery can last for 3-4 days. and it can be charged via USB port. Nice and friendly, isn't it??

what do you mean by driver and software?? A168 cannot install any software except JAVA games and applications.

BTW, there is no driver or CD in the box.

if you need driver for A168, you can do a search in google, with keyword "MT6227", since A168 is using MT6227 solution. I don't think it's appropriate to spread the driver here.

I am already have bought SongA168, but i have no any drivers to connect it with com port.
Does Song A168 have any O/S? Not sure, but may be, its close to/or is 'SavaJe ' ?
Does Song A168 have any WEB tech support?

no web tech, you may contact comwise.com.hk, you may try, not sure if they will answer emails in english, they don't expect to sell their phones to foreign countries. why not contact your A168 seller for help??

to read .txt, you should install moto-txt, however, i 'm not sure if you read chinese or not, and i'm not sure if the software have english interface.

it's not a ppc/palm phone, don't expect it can read .doc file.

I`m already tried to contact comwise.com.hk, they did not answer.
I have bought it in US (ebay.com), and seller have no any soft for Song.
I live in Russia and i want to Reflesh it.
Of couse i know about google and i`m allready have try to search, and of couse, have found some links, but I connect to internet by duil up with dinamic IP from RU-zone and could not complit registratin in COM-zone. That is why i`m asking here.
For how much i can buy Song A168 in HK now?

For software which for reflashing the firmware, i don't have it, and i don't think it can be downloadable, besides, it may need special hardware to work with the software.

do you see the little lock on the top-left corner? tap and hold it for 2-3 secs. your screen will lock.

people claimed that MobTime Cell Phone Manager can sync with A168.

I've tried both software, and either one should work.

BTW, I sold my A168 already, and am using a nice linux phone from UTStarcom for almost a week. I'm very pleased with my new phone (UTStarcom DV007), except it's lack of radio function. You can search one in ebay, or using google. I bought it during my Easter Holiday trip to China for 1280RMB (i.e. $168us or 122Euro).

Hi ! Everybody

This is Vivek from Nepal. I bought this phone from ebay India. But the seller was not so good. And he is not in contact after he sold this phone to me.

When I tried to send file from my phone to my laptop using Bluetooth, my phone turned off automatically and started to restart after every 3 seconds. I could not find any support centre in Nepal for this phone. We do have very good repair centres for other brands like Nokia, Samsung and Others but this phone is something new to everybody. According to them, I need to reinstall the firmware but its not with them. They also need to know the pinout for this phone.

Anyone, who can do something for this, please help me. I am glad that I at least got this forum to place my problem. Tiger_bb, you seem to be very useful for this phone users. Thanks for your support. Can you please suggest me what I can do? Do you know the repair centre in Hong Kong who can reinstall the firmware for this phone.

I had invested huge amount of money to buy this phone- almost two times of my montly salary. I am suffering a lot due to its problem. Any help will be heartily appreciate...

You can contact the manufacturer "http://www.comwise.com.hk" and see if they can help you. But, bear in mind that, since it is a China company, they may not answer English emails. Use simple English may help!!

I've heard that some firmware version have such Bluetooth problems, and need to repair and update the firmware in service centre. I only heard that there are customers having problem after sending files to other phones via BT, and terminated before 100% complete. Never heard it will have problem when sending files with laptop.

i cant lock the keypad... i tap on the lock in the left corner and hold it, and nothing happens.... why?

is there also a way to turn the vibrating on without going into the alarm type menue?

and how can i add picture to my phone contacts? it alswys tells me there is no seleted entry...

i am confused as the manual doesnt describe all good and uses different menu-titels

HK specials NEVER come with 850 as they are rarely meant to be sold outside of China. You will find most phones along these lines dont even have the 1900 band. I really wouldn't hold out on getting a phone with the 850 band

There are at least 3 companies distributing A168 in Hong Kong, each of them have their own service center, unless you can tell your phone is distribute by one of them, otherwise, no service center is willing to repair for you. Since, this is not a major brand phone, they have to make sure their resources are given to their own customers.

I'll suggest you to phone Comwise's Hong Kong Office, they only in charge of import/export issues, however, most HK people have better English than people in China. (+852 27567398)

Let me explain the relationship for you.

Comwise = Manufacturer of this phone. Their model number is D120
Song = Buy the solution and branded it, and model number is A168, and there is another company called Rex, also buy this solution, and use another body design, model number is P990.

In HK, there are at least 3 distributors for A168, and 2-3 for Rex P990.

Since I don't know if your A168 is exported from either of the distributors, so, contact Comwise may be the best solution I can think of.

GSM 850 and 1900 is not popular Asia, so, usually, phones in Hong Kong will only have 900/1800/1900, or with UMTS. And I don't think A168 will ever make a GSM850 version.

The lock icon will change from unlock to locked after you tap and hold for a few seconds. Usually, i will set the auto key-lock.

To change it to mute and vibrate mode, just press the right-menu button for 1 second.

To add photos to contact (i never did that before):
1) the contact should be on the phone's memory, not on the SIM card.
2) photo size should be under 50KB (or 20KB?? i didn't use it before, so, sorry i'm not that sure)
3) since the size is limited, and the resolution should also limited to 160x120. (cannot test it now, since i sold my A168 a few days ago)
4) even the manual i got have many many mistakes, information are wrong too. most of the knowledge are gained by trial...

hey... thanks... but the lock/unlock and vibratiing still doesnt work. i tap the lock and hold it for arround 10 seconds and nothing happs... i also tried 3 seconds, 4,5,6,7,8,9,....

the same with the vibration. which right menue buttun you mean? i tried all buttins the phone´s got... nothing

no. when you changed to USB storage mode, it will automatically shut off, since, you're accessing the memory of the phone and the card.

to use the com port, you have to install the MT6227 driver. i post a link for download in page 1 of this thread.

simply ask T-Mobile to give you the MMS settings for PDA Phones, and usually PDA phone needs to enter the settings manually.

I'm not living in the same region as your, I know nothing about T-Mobile.

tmobile has an automatic configurator (might not work as there is not a mobile that is similar to this phone). You can also get the settings from the tmobile forum here or by doing a search on Tmobile's site.

just bought the phone today in NYC. They sell it for pretty cheap. $176 total. The guy there told me that they don't have alot of these in stock cause his boss think it won't sell. So I got the last one they have in stock. I just tested the camera, it's really good. but i do have a problem. I usually don't care about the imei since it's just a bunch of number. But today i saw a huge sticker on the back of the phone. So I went on online and check it out. It's actually an imei of a phone call A18 from BenQ Noka. Now that is really weird. I don't know anything about imei. But I do know that imei is not reusable. Or is it? I really don't wanna go into legal stuffs, but it is safe for me to use this phone now?

the photo showed in ebay is the same as A168, but I never heard that it called CECT P900.

and it is definitely not made in korea nor a korean brand.

My sim card is good and i have tried friends sim cards and it says the same thing so i know its the phone. I was working fine but now i get hte "Insert Sim". Could someone please help me on this becuase im in the U.S. Army and i dont have any time for a service center or anything like that. Is there maybe a firmware that could take care of this problem or software update of some kind???

I love the phone in general i just wish it wouldn't have messed up on me...

if the sims you insert is in GSM900/1800/1900, then it's the problem of your phone.

The sim card is a 900/1800. So i know its a problem with the phone but i need some help on how to fix it...maybe firmware or a driver or something to fix what has went wrong with my phone.....

my A168 worked excellent for me...

doddy, are you sure you insert the sim correctly?? and try to clean the sim card's metal part with a dry tissue/towel, make sure it's not rusted.

otherwise, you'd better take your A168 to the seller and repair.

there are many people using A168 in hongkong, i knew many people via a hk phone forum, and i never heard of an "insert sim" problem.

lol yes i inserted the sim card correctly and i have wiped it off plenty of times the sim card is practicaly new and the phone is new the contacts are fine so i know there are no problems there....im using the A168 for Cingular in the U.S. and when i turn the phone on it comes up saying insert sim....i really dont understand that.

These phones are dual band so they work in uk, Europe, and asia to work in the us they would have to be able to take a p1900 sim card or be tribrand.

well I think this phone is for use only in europe and asia so It won't work in the us let alone accept the type of sim card you use over there.

are you sure you're using a GSM900/1800/1900 sim card?? if so, i suggest you to take your phone for repair. that's abnormal.

when the phone prompts you to insert a SIM card, that means it cannot detect your SIM, it usually happens when there is no SIM inserted.

BTW, does your SIM card activate yet?? can it be used on other phones?? and which phone model you can use this SIM??

Im not sure about all the information on my sim card, but i had my sim card in my Sony Ericsson S710A witch is Cingular so i know its capable of GSM900/1800/1900. Yes the sim is activated it has been for some time now.

The phone is dual band meaning it only works in two areas. Now with asian phones it tends to be europe and asia. This phone will probably not be able to pick up American networks or recognize American sim cards.

THE song can be used in the us i have one and i liove in pensacola florida it works great no probloms its a triband phone and in the us cingular us gsm 1900 or 850 but it works fine and the g3 sim isnt the problom i worked for cingular and i use a 3g sim its the phone send it back get a new one

Sorry, i haven't use this phone before, there are too many mobile phone made by china recently, there are new models coming every 2-3 days.

as i know, it's easy for anyone to have their own phone brand and design in China. you can simply give the factory your design and your required spec. they will give you a quotation, it's about 100us each, minimum order is 1000pcs. selling 1000pcs of phone in china is very easy, so new phones coming rapidly.

- lack of java
- no radio
- no flash light for camera
- no auto-focus (but the phone has auto-focus printed at the back, so, i'm not sure)

select the pantech c120 and put in your number. this will send you the settings for mms automatically when it pops up, select the 3(2g) mms data account and the save all that and finish. after that your mms should be working

i just recently bought the song a168 and i love the phone so much...but it can't seem to get service anywhere...it reconizes my sim card and everything...and when i am in town i get decent service but when im out in kinda of country or at my house where i would get 5 bars with any other phone i get no service....is there a setting i have on bad or some kind of softwear i need to dl or anything i really wanna keep this phone but i can't if i don't get service anywhere....so any help be nice btw i have cingular

Can anyone help please..........I have a little problem with my Song A168. Everytime the phone is turned off if the battery goes dead I have a lot of trouble with the phone reading my sim card again it says "SIM Access Error".

I have to take out the battery and play around and sometimes it takes a long time of battery out and battery back in before the Sim is able to be read............many thanks.

Cingular uses the 850 Mhz band primarily and the 1900 band as a secondary. In the city, it is common to have a lot of the 1900 band, but in the country (as you leave) its more likely to be 850. The song does not have 850, only 1900 so it wont get signal where there are few to no 1900 towers. There is no way to change this and this is how the phone is made.

Hi

I recently bought a Hantel HT3188. For all intents and purposes is the brother of the Song 168. (it has a numerickey pad).

Could some one help me with java game uploading. I have no idea on how it is done.

To add to the growing knowledge of this model I have worked out that the video needs to be in either 3gp or mp4 formats (maybe avi, haven't checked yet) encoded with H.263 or MP4 and the following attributes;

220x144 (no higher)
25fps (maybe 30)
624 kbps video bitrate (maybe higher)
AMR Narrow Band audio (not AMR wide or ACC)

I have established this through a lot of trial and error. These may not be the absolute params but it does not run Divx or H.264 codecs.

Also the following programs are useful for the phone;

MTK GPRS USB Modem drivers for the serial port which works fine with Float's Mobile Agent (ie. phone book / SIM / Outlook integration).

As there is a growing number of people using these phones it would be wothwhile for the manual to be translated into english.

Hi mobocray.

I'm sorry I do not speak Chinese but I can tell you the phone has 3 input types for Chinese; Mulitap Pinyin, Simplified Chinese and Smart Pinyin.

It does have a handwritting input but it works one character at a time. Its not very accurate and takes time to operate. I have found that the easiest method for input is by pen tap and the small qwerty touch pad that comes up on the screen. For english at least.

it cannot run the internet because all the phone carrier now use 3G for faster internet and song A168 is not compatible of 3G.

if you look for technical support, please contact the seller or the manufacturer. i'm not working for A168's manufacturer, nor having any connection with them.

and i believe google do help in searching nearly everything, such as spec. and info of A168, where to download java app...

last but not least, if you don't know how to deal with this phone, don't buy it.... and remember that you may have no support at all, either from the seller, the net, or even the manufacturer....

We purchased a phone from a company located in Putian China. This phone was supposed to be a Nokia N95 but was a very cheap knock off. We can not get this phone to work here in Canada(Rogers Network). It was suppose to be unlocked but not sure. When we put in our sim card it reads all the information, but it says no service. When we plug it into our computer using an usb cable, it says MT6227 is connected. So we up load music, images etc. into the folders of the phone, but when we unplug the usb cable it says the phone is empty.

When we plug the phone back into the cpu, using the usb cable, the phone (drive f) shows everything we uploaded.

Please help. We are very new to this stuff. We got swindle by the seller and is just trying to see if this phone is salvageable.

All the N95 Clones I've seen are dual band GSM. A GSM 850/1900 phone will only in the Americas. A GSM 900/1800 phone will only work in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Brazil. What you bought is unfortunately probably the latter meaning it will not work on Roger's 850/1900 network. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong...

If you text alot like I do..yes. I have lots of touchscreen only phones and I'll always revert back to my phones with keypads after a while.

You gotta go to the 3rd icon down then go to Services 2nd icon 3rd row down looks like a globe/internet icon.Homepage is your first option your last option is Settings, you put some of the settings there. Then in the same area just after you click services WAP is the 1st thing u gotta setup then WAP Data. If that dont help ya, then Give back the phone.

On another note... Ive been getting quite a few PMs about MP4 Settings....
If you noticed a video recording comes out at a resolution at 320x240...so I'm sure everyone tried MP4 at that resolution well it wont work. The settings are quite simple. The max resolution for Mp4 on the Song A168 is 192x112. I use that resolution at 384kbps 96kbps audio 48KhZ Stereo with 20% Audio Boost at 25FPS. I have tested 512kbps but I dont see it needed unless its a High Action Movie. For the settings I just listed your looking at 200mb per 1hr of video. Im all for Quality over Quanity. Also if its a Drama,Comedy 256kbps would be just fine.

It takes some time getting used to but I text alot as well. I will never go back to regular keypad. Once you get good at it its much faster on a touch screen then regular.Hence why I have to touchscreen phones now.

Check your sim card...make sure its in the right position. If it keeps going in and out of "emergency"...you dont have good signal where you are and you wont be able to change it with that phone.

Then there is nothing you can do. You cant make the phone gain more signal. You'll have to get another phone with stronger signal.

It would also be really good to find out what bands your carrier uses and which one is the strongest.

The Song A168 does not have the 850 band Cingular uses the 850 band, therefore you get little or no reception but the phone sees the other networks because they are on the 900 and so on, hope this helps.

A168 Question - I want to download ringtones or songs or pictures from my computer, however when I plug it into the USB I get these 3 options Mass Storage, Webcam Comport. There are still no instructions on what to do next. Is there something I need to install on the PC for it to recognize the phone. I am fully aware there are no drivers for the phone but this phone is not supprted by T-Mobile so therefore the only way I can get ringtones or games into it is via my PC. If anyone has transferred stuff from a PC to the Phone succesfully please post directions.

You need to have MT6227 drive, I had dl it but it doesn't work with my window Vista. Good luck

Hi ! There

My phone is working fine except then small battery problem. I am not able to charge the phone battery with the cable. When ever I connect the cable to the phone, the phone starts charging but after few seconds it displays the error message "Warning ! over battery temperature". This happens in both case when I connect to computer or charge through USB. But I am sure it is not by battery temperature. The message presets even when the battery is empty.

Till now am taking out the battery from the phone and charging by charger separately. Can anybody help me please suggest..

I am also in need of English manual. Do anybody have it, please send it to

To extend this description, so further problems dont' occur and for clarification; On PC it will (should) come up with two removable drives. One is for your memory card, and the other is for your phone. On Mac, mine came up with three drives. One for phone, memory card, and sim card. Odd but that's what happened.

I have tested almost everythign on this phone. Still confused about some stuff but can try and help with the basic stuff. I don't know any of the wap settings and triband stuff. It seems the average Joe on this forum knows what it is and I don't even know. Anyway I know that the phone works for most everyone with T-Mobile (which is what I use) but has not worked all too well for Cingular users.

Edit: So far I haven't figured out how to play music through the audio player. I've tried putting the music in the My Music folder, and the Audio folder and nothing. I haven't tried putting music in either of those folders on the phone; just memory card. I bet that's how you play them, but there is barely any space for that so don't matter. Just go to Menu -> System -> File Manager -> My Music and then pick the folder and song and press play. Only plays one song at a time.

I would like to know how to get new games on my phone and be able to play them. I have seen that post about getjar.com but what folder do I put them in and how to I get there via the phone?

I am having troubles with my batteries. I read it only needs to be charged for only an hour and a haf. I instantly called that bull, so I let the charging go until the green light showed up. Took, I don't know, 5 hours or so. Now here's my problems though: I needed to charge the second battery so I toss it in the charger and take it out a couple hours later. I go to work and listen to music and my main battery ends up finally dying after a couple hours go by. I toss my second battery in and TADA the damn thing is dead. So apparently you can't charge batteries unless they are in your phone. So I come back from work this morning and toss the battery on the charger whilst still in the phone. Finally ends and green light pops. Not more than 20 minutes and a 10 minute phone call later the damn thing lost a bar of battery already.

Can anyone help. Maybe I am charging too much, not enough, busted charger.. I already sent the store on ebay I got it from a message about it. Just wondering if anyone else had the problem and know how to fix it and if not and they write back I'll let you guys know.

Song A168 is 192x112. I use that resolution at 384kbps 96kbps audio 48KhZ Stereo with 20% Audio Boost at 25FPS. I have tested 512kbps but I dont see it needed unless its a High Action Movie. For the settings I just listed your looking at 200mb per 1hr of video.
Im all for Quality over Quanity. Also if its a Drama,Comedy 256kbps would be just fine.

Hi folks,

II normally consider myself pretty competent with electronics and after having read all 13 pages of this forum and 4+ days of trying. I signed up to see if anyone else has input. I have a Song A168 but it will not charge and/or turn on for me. I had used a wall charger overnight, the green light in the top right corner comes on. I have had it hooked up to USB for many hours as well (multiple usb ports too).

The phone does nothing when you push the power button. I installed the MT6227 drivers as well, and 2 pc sync programs both with out success.

Any attempt at help would be greatly appreciated.

so far i love this phone. but have some poblems.. and if any1 here could help me that would be great.

when i connect the phone to the pc with the USB cable and pick mass storage the phone shuttsdown and showes a USB connected screen. but noting happends on my pc.

and after what i understand it should show up as a removable drive but it dont.
nether does my gf phone. any know why this is ? maybe some tips on how to fix it would be great.

and then over to the secound problem. after what i have seen this phone should come with 1GB memory. but all i can see is 55mb. have i been seeing something wrong and it should only have 55mb? or?

If you look further back in the forum you should find what you are looking for.As regards the memory the phone is only 55mb but you need to fit the 1GB card to get the increased memory,It will then come up on the PC as two seperate memory drives.

i have been looking true the forum and cant say i have found anything that sound like the problem i have with my phone...

i have now a 1GB memorystick to.. but when i plug in the usb into the phone i just get up a error in windows. something like ( windows have found a error with the usb unit and it cant be reconise)

any1 know how to fix this issue?

Put the memory card in the phone and keep the phone shut off. Plug into the computer see if the phone will turn on the usb screen. If that's what you've been doing then turn the phone on and THEN plug in the usb cable and see how that is. I woul djust fool around with it til I got it working.

Which sucks because I've been fooling around with my phone but haven't figured out what's up.My phone says camera module not ready. Can anyone help me out with this. I can't take pictures anymore.
