OSX Bluetooth Network Access Point

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

The latest release of OSX (10.4.9) [supposedly] supports the network access point profile, so in theory I can "route" directly through my Blackjack. Has anyone got this working and if so, how did you do it? I've read a couple of reports of this working, but nobody has posted how they got this working. I'm sure its trivial, but its not obvious to me.

It does indeed support PAN. Here's what I did to get mine working:

1. I re-ran the Bluetooth setup wizard on my Mac. I selected the Dash, and went through the steps. At the end, it stated that it added PAN. Of course, you'll need to have Bluetooth on.

2. On the Dash, I clicked on [Start] and browsed through the programs, at which point I found the Accessories folder.

3. in the Accessories folder, I saw the Internet Sharing application. I started the application, selected my appropriate data connection, and then selected Bluetooth.

4. I told it to connect.

5. On my Mac, I selected the menu option from my Bluetooth icon on the top bar, and selected, Personal Area Network on T-Mobile Dash. (Not sure of the exact language it used.) It then connected.

Hope this helps.

Sweet.

@JBHorner: How fast is the connection with EDGE? Have you tried PAN via Wifi through the Dash (i.e., at TMobile Hot Spot)? If so, how fast is that? Does it eliminate the need to get a seperate TMobile Hot Spot account for the MAC?

Thank you very much for the information. I managed to get my BlackJack working as a network access point via bluetooth using your instructions. This is much better than having to pull out a USB cable for short connections. Also, it allows for charging when using the phone via PAN.

Wasn't this capable before 10.4.9? I have been doing it with my Treo 650 since 10.3.9.

For EDGE, I had the following results in Los Angeles:
At Speedtest.net: 172 down, 56 up.
At DSLReports.com: 160 down, 38 up.

This surprised me, actually. I thought EDGE was slower than this.

On my Dash, it will only allow me to select data connections that use the T-Mobile network. It does not allow me to select my defined WiFi connection, despite the fact I had it on. I looked for a hack to see if I could change this behavior, however, I was unsuccessful.

The later versions of Windows Mobile 5 removed the ability to tether using Bluetooth. Instead, they replaced the standard tether with a Personal Area Network. Mac OS X versions prior to 10.4.9 did not have the ability to utilize this Bluetooth profile.

I can't help you there, as I do not have a WM6 device, nor have I loaded the "test" version on my Dash.

What I can say is that Microsoft, at the time the standard Bluetooth tethering was deprecated, stated that PAN was their standard going forward. Now, this said, anything can happen. They may change their mind, others may introduce products to get around the limitation, etc.

I can't speak much about your iBook. Tiger is a great OS, but I would almost say that you should just wait for Panther. I did read an article recently that states that disabling Dashboard will take the memory requirements down on Tiger. It was in one of the two Mac magazines I get.

I tried this last night on my G4 QS 733 machine and it worked great!!!!!!!!! I have Comcast at home but this computer was right in front of me so I tried with that. I got speeds of 226kbps down and 82kbps up on Speakeasy connecting from PA to NY and slightly less from PA to DC but it still was more than triple dial up speed though. I may just have to sell my Toughbook and Itronix ix250 and get a new G4 12" iBook to be all Mac all the time LOL

Since you were able to find the required file in your accessory folder on your blackjack how did you get it there. I went to my accessory folder and there was no file for internet connection. Is it somewhere else. When my computer tries to connect it says

Failed to open a connection to the network service. Your device may have reached its maximum number of supported network connections.

I've looked elsewhere on the phone but i'm not having any luck.

thanks in advance!!!

Use Explore Device on the Activesync desktop to go to the Windows folder on your phone and look for Internet Sharing.lnk

I don't have access to Activesync desktop since I've got a two year old powerbook. Is there any other way to get this link. Once I find it how do I make it accessible through my start menu???

sorry to double post. I went in through explorer on the phone and I found the internet sharing link and sure enough it worked!!! My problem is I can't get the file to show up under a start menu or somewhere where it will be easier to get to it without having to go to the windows folder. I tried to copy it and move it but my computer wouldn't let me. When I tried to copy it on the phone it wasn't an option. If someone can tell me a trick to this that doesn't require active sync or a windows computer that would be a great help.

thanks

triple post.

went to a friends and used his windows computer and connected with activesync. windows folder didn't show up. no matter what I did. I finally downloaded the trial version of resco explorer and guess what. It didn't show up again. I went into help and was able to make it appear after a find and then I moved it to the start menu and it is working great!!
Anyway just posted this group of three posts to save some people some grief if they try to do this. Good Luck.

I finally got it to work too, but it can take a while to search for the "Internet Connection Sharing".
