A week ago, I've bought a Rogers' SE K790a. Thinkin about debrand my fone.
How many of you did a debraned your SE K790?
And are you happy with it? or regrat(sp?)?
Where can I find all rogers' SMS, Internet and MMS settings on Sonyericsson?
Is it same as all other roger's fone?

just debranded mine last nite.. not bad.. same thing just a different software and unlocked mp3 ringtone options!

There's actually a tool on sonyericsson.com under product support and then WAP/MMS u can have those settings sent to your phone automatically after the software upgrade.

off topic but damn i love your sig

I don't think it's worth the trouble and money since you can get mp3 ringtones on your phone without debranding it.

I unbranded it a long time ago and i am completly satisfied. In the end, if you decide to sell it, it'll be worth more too

Unbranded firmware is much better. It is the way the manufacturer intended the phone to be. I am on my second factory unlocked unbranded phone (both SE, W810i and now K790a) and they are great. MMS/WAP settings are just a few clicks away and I have no problem using them on the Cingular network.

i unbranded it the very next day

I unbranded mine thru wotan (R1JC002 Generic Hong Kong) a month ago.

The phone is working perfect.

I always buy unbranded or unbrand immediately. The updated firmware gave me more themes, games, videos and no surprise restrictions (like no mp3 ringtones) that I might run into after using it for a while.

It depends on what is more important to you. I was told the Rogers firmware work better with the Rogers network and it's best to keep it if you can. In this case, since Rogers crippled the ability to download your own MP3 ringtones (without paying for it), then most people unbrand it. I'm getting another eventually and haven't decided whether to unbrand this time around.

I heard from one of my friends, one guy who flashed his phone, that kept Rogers firmware, but enabled your own MP3 ringtones and all, so it can still be under warranty

GSMliberty.com asked me $13 to unbrand mine, so why not. Can't wait to unlock it now.

Hmmm, interesting. Did he do it himself or at a shop?

Darn in Ottawa eh? Since I'm a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, I can't go into enemy territory.

Roger FW works better on Rogers ehhhh? That is the same line Cingular feeds people about Cingular FW. Obviously both are wrong.

I didn't get this from Rogers. I got this info. from a store that sells unlocked/unbranded phones. I was surprise to hear that from them, but that's from their experience of fixing Rogers unbranded phones.

well u can set mp3 ringtones with out debranding by drm packager but tat takes time as well... so if u just pay $10-$20 you save yourself converting and u get to choose fw you want and its UNBRANDED!!! =DDDDD

there's so much risk with debranding. You also lose the rogers warranty if you do. The process of converting validating the mp3 isn't long. It's damn fast if you ask me. And because I don't change my ringtune nearly often enough, I don't see the point of debranding it. So much risk, so little reward. And for those who don't like the rogers logo that appears when you start the phone, you have the option of removing it in the phone option.

But the thing is the new batch of k790a's have some lame ROGERS MUSIC PLAYER which is super ugly. Your lucky that you still have the old one

I've had good luck flashing phones with Davinci Team.

Did the same thing too. I was afraid of unbranding my phone at first cuz of the warranty, but I did it anyway after a month. I find no difference with the network from a branded and an unbranded phone .....

I unbranded mine as well, you shouldn't notice any network difference, debranding just takes off all the ROGERS software.

i debranded mine last nite

mp3 ringtones = worth the $10 alone

but i don't think u can take off the rogers logo as it indicates the network ur on .. tho i wouldn't mind being wrong

Posted by: wpg204

Mines debranded to HK Firmware. IMO it's a lot better than the Rogers crap.

Hey at least I can type and read in chinese on my phone now ^.^

Posted by: wgiz

Most important to me was RSS Feeds, which rogers disabled in their branding. The option was completely removed. This was the MAIN reason I selected this phone over the krzr... However I've been presently surprised by the great phone capabilities, AND the FREE 2GB mem stick that I got!!!

I unbranded using generic USA and it's there now. Unfortunately, I can't get back on the mobile internet.

I tried the SE page, recieved the settings, but it's still not connecting

Posted by: FidoFan

I unbranded my K790 after unlocking it. Having a Rogers-branded phone on Fido just seemed wrong.

Posted by: [droc]

*raises hand*

i love it more than before.

but i'm trying to sell it..i desire a flip now.

Posted by: wgiz

mkool...
I can't stop looking at your sig gif... :'(

Posted by: gingy1

as casa~nova indicated. if you're doing it (unbranding it) so you can use mp3s as ringtones, you do not have to spend the money. you can do it for free. just search this forum. I have the k790a from Rogers and was able to find the process posted. Enjoy

Can someone please post what advantages there are to debranding this phone, other than the mp3 ringtones? I'm more curious as to apps and games. If i get my phone debranded, will i be able to write and install as many apps/games as i want? I would think this would be the main reason for debranding, if it's the case...

you can easily search for your answer instead of bringing up such an old thread.

You should be able to install java apps without the need for debranding. Debranding or updating to other firmwares can be a benefit in the sense that you might get different bugs resolved that were noticeable in previous firmwares. The Rogers firmware crapped out on mine and gave me the WSOD so I flashed it with an original SE firmware and not only does it look better without the Rogers crap, it seems to be reacting faster while using the UI.

I just debranded mine with SETool2Lite, was easy and FREE!!
