P990i performance going south again.

Man, my P990i has gone wonky in a big, bad way. I'm getting crashes, freezes and apps just puttering out a few times each day. Also, she freezes in the middle of calls -- WTF?

It was fine after the most recent SEUS update -- for a matter of weeks. Now I just get a bunch of frustration.

Anyone else having problems?

Have you installed any software since the update ?

Yes but the wonkfest began long after the installs. Can't figure it out.

Thoughts?

So the onl possible recourse is then to reformat and even do a reflash. And... finger crossed that the troubles will go and STAY away.

Looking forward to a newer fw anyways!

Posted by: shockdaddyd

I'm thinking the same thing. A new FW would be nice right about now.

I love this phone but it does have its drawbacks.

I am having the same issues as you. I have reformatted and reloaded the new firmware, and I still get crashes and errors. I am ditching this phone for a Treo 650. The Treo sucks, but not as bad as the P990.

The p990 has the potential to be the most amazing phone on the market right now. There is no other phone which has the same features as it. As soon as Sony realizes firmwares that will fix the main problems that people are having then people will dying for this phone.

Too true. I hope they figure it out quickly. The iPhone is going to have an impact on their consumer base.

I see where your coming from but the iphone i just like ipods. Its only marketing that made it so good.

I dunno. The specs look mighty nice. I think the iPhone will be every bit the revolution the iPod was.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.0.6306/1644; en; U; ssr))

One problem I have with this phone is that it's VERY slow, even compared to the P900.

Agreed, it is slow. Response to pressing buttons is slow, running apps is slow, starting up and shutting down is slow. Beginning to wonder if firmware updates will ever get this device to where it should be – beyond beta.

I don't know what to make of my P990i. The performance is only getting worse. This morning I woke up, grabbed my phone and went to check email. For some reason push email has become more of a push my P990i and maybe, I'll get a push back. In other words, performance of that particular feature is questionable at best.

So I restart my phone with hopes that it will again push -- I knew I had email waiting. Once the phone restarts I open messaging. Then it suddenly restarts 'to improve performance.' How, after being on for less than two minutes, does it need to restart to improve performance?

This is becoming pointless. My old MDA is looking better by the day. It's not even close to being as unstable as the P990i and, when I do restart, it takes a fraction of the time.

Sorry, just needed to vent. It makes for a good diversion whenever I consider throwing this phone at a wall.

i love my p990i

its slow. it has very few apps out. yea its not as stable as windows pocket pc

but for me. style is important, lifespan of the model is important, and ease of use.

ive found that in symbian/uiq.

i have used nokia n series phones, p910, mda, pocket pc, palm os pda's and ive always came back to p910.and now p990. i dont know why. i know its limits and lack of support but there are also good sides of this phone.

i love symbian os. i didnt like nokia because it doesnt have touch screen first of all and secondly.. nokia symbian os3.0 is just bland... i dont like the GUI, interface much at all.

windows pocket pc has the world. it has everything. but again its too much for me. when i leave my home. I AM ALSO LEAVING MY WINDOWS PC behind me. its too much. its too complex. not for me

palm os.. great platform. great for functionality and simplicity to the base definition of a pda. but its been getting outdated for wireless/internet use and well it doesnt have the feeling of being fresh and new anymore. they need to update it. i know their next palm os is based on linux so i am very looking forward to it.

p990i offers me the things i need. mp3. videos. email. internet browser thats built in. and most of all, basic pda functions. i love the keyboard. i do alot of texting. i love the screen, its sharp. and most of all i love the styling of the phone.. because i have fashion sense. and with that comes alot of acknowledgments and eyelookers when i use my phone. alot of people have complimented on it already withing 4days of ownership. i bought this pda cuz i see sony is working on patches and improving performance. its not at a solid state as we all like to see it at, but its getting there. and i cant wait to have the p990 later, i want the full bang for the buck. i wanted it now. and i have it. love it. and will support it.

to each his own
i hope you like your p990 and treats you like it treats me. well.

i too love my p990i but it's in dire need of properly functioning firmware. the current and former firmware is in beta state at best. the phone crashes far too frequently, is too slow and the os is clunky. if they ever work the bugs out it will be amazing. until that point it's frustrating.

ONE MORE VOTE, What do u need from a phone? a good mp3 player ( p990 has best ) a good college camera for quick fun and a full keyboard.

if you can live with nokia phones SE is simply better

This latest firmware update makes using the P990i a much, much, much better experience...thus far...

Posted by: mobidemon

^^^ some good news finally

I've been using my SE P990i for a couple of months now and I don't have any problems since my purchasing date, and just recently I update my unit from SE Update Service and it improved the performance.
