Using the 262 for modem w US Cellular?

I have a Motorola 262 and bought the USB cable and Motorola Phone Tools CD that was suppossed to allow me to use the phone as dial-up modem. I couldn't get it to work and a US Cellular rep just told me that they do something to the phone to keep it from being used as a modem. I'm guessing they want to force me to buy their expensive PC Wireless card for $60+/month.

I only want to use my phone as a modem (for my laptop) when I have no other option for connecting to the web or sending a fax. Are their any tricks that would help me do this?

Seems to me that if I can dial the cell phone and get the audio handshake to the fax or PC modem - that woud do the trick. Are there any devices that plug into the headseat plug of the phone and the phone/modem jack of the PC or fax machine?

US Cellular's terms and conditions do prohibit the use of the phones as tethered modems and they will suspend your service if they see data usage that indicates it's being used that way. You may get away for a while if you use it lightly, but expect your service to be suspended.
