Desktop unable to connect to P800?

I just received my P800 but have come across a snag.

Instead of installing the synch software on the provided CD, I installed the new version that just became available in the past day or so.

I plugged the base into a usb port.

Under the running tasks is shown the phone connection link. Upon pulling up properties, it shows Cable - Com 3 status as "connecting". However, it never makes it to "connected".

Am I missing something?

I tried rebooting the computer to no avail.

Thanks

Update:

Ok, uninstalled the newer synch software and installed the older version off of CD. After a long while the phone connection link displayed that one of the COM ports connected. So far, so good.

Guess I'll try installing the later synch software over the older version.

However, I do have a question.
The icon for the phone connection link occasionally changes its appearance from a straight double-headed arrow to one end being crooked. I can't find any discussion on what the different icons exactly mean. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks

I had a similar problem, and solved it just by restarting the machine with the phone plugged in. The software seems buggy -- it took me 3 or 4 tries to sync, but I am running it under Virtual PC (using Windows XP) on a Mac, so I figured that was the problem. Apparently not...

I had similar problems and had to kill my anti-virus and firewall software for things to work properly. Also must have Outlook running during synchronization.

PC SPECS: Win XP Pro (SP1), Outlook 2002 (Office XP), McAfee Anti-Virus and Firewall (currently uninstalled).
