Nice, what does this fix? Any new features? Did the java permission problem get straighten out?

Posted by: steph280

If they fix the bluetooth stack with that firmware, this will be awsome!

Not sure, I am at work and don't have my cd to install the modem driver that it says you need in the instructions.....

Posted by: bartolo5

Wow, that was the most geeky flash upgrade I've ever seen. Lots of nailbitting waiting to see if I was going to brick my Blackjack! It did timeout the first time I tried but I did it again and the second time I went fine. Checking out right now what is new.. first thing I notice, Cingular logo is gone now you get the new ATT logo.

Posted by: troutspinner

I installed it, not much of a diference except for re-branding the phone to AT&T, yay, the start-up logo now lasts longer! The notes on the site says it fixes some roaming issues, especially international as well as some icons were updated to say AT&T instead of Cingular.

Did you guys install the modem driver first, or am I o.k. to flash without installing it?

I'd imagine it is primary to fix roaming issue in countries like Brazil, Australia and Thailand.

Posted by: bartolo5

Java apps still need confirmation for every net access

Posted by: mattmc

I keep getting a load binary data fail when clicking on the exe file...

Posted by: Foxbat121

Can anyone who applied the update confirm any changes to Bluetooth stack? If it doesn't fix the bluetooth issues, I'll pass. I won't travel to any of those three countries any time soon and I could care less about corp logo change. It just doesn't worth the time to re-setup my phone again.

Posted by: snathanb

Does it blow everthing away? Or just the contact data stored in flash? I really don't want to have to reinstall all my apps.

Posted by: Foxbat121

It's like a hard reset. Everything are blown away.

Posted by: kuj

Anyone have pics of the new icons/logos?

Posted by: solo118

This Software Update will purge all data from your BlackJack!

The software update will erase all of the information on the handset. It is recommended that you back up all of the data on the handset to an external medium through means of ActiveSync or alternative methods. The data lost during the flash process is not recoverable. This Update (the Downloader Tool) is not compatible with any other product.

Posted by: dkhomdds

So any other changes other than the "Logo, Icons, Roaming problems"??? Did they fix the Java application??? or added DUN...

Again since this also hard resets the phone it would be a pain i the arse to reload everything and start from zip...

Posted by: sgiles1

I'm all pumped to install the update (don't know why, guess I like new stuff) but I left my BJ install CD at work! Can someone PM me this:
Install the SGH-i607 Modem USB drivers version MCCI 4.38 from the BlackJack Software Companion CD ?

Thanks!

Posted by: didefresh2006

I need the companion cd too.....i seemed to misplaced mine at the moment.

Cingular Video is now called "Cellular Video"

The DST patch has to be reinstalled with the update.

Posted by: Foxbat121

Can any one post OS build #? It is available at Settings->About screen.

OS 5.1.342 (Build 15100.3.0.2) which I believe did not change but the radio version did
Radio Version: i607UCGB4

Posted by: ivwshane

So this update requires a pc and backing up all of your data and doesn't really add anything?

I'll pass.

that is really all it corrects

Posted by: Laser47

As well as the roaming issues, the update removes almost all traces of the cingular name from the phone. The start up animation is the same but instead of it saying cingular at the end it says at&t with the blue globe. Also changed are the icons in the start menu. Cingular Music has changed to AT&T music, Cingular Mall has changed to AT&T mall, and Cingular Video has changed to Cellular Video(which sounds dull to me compared to cingular video). Among those icon name changes the only icon graphic to change is the AT&T mall icon. Also changed is the banner on the dial screen, instead of Cingular it says, of course at&t. Other things ive noticed is that the bundled wallpapers, now have the at&t globe watermarked on them, and another thing is that in the ringtones selection 'Cingular Tone' has changed to 'AT&T Tone' but the tone itself is the same. I have also tried Opera Mini , but the problem of asking to allow connections is still there.

Posted by: Foxbat121

Did anyone test the Bluetooth stack? Does it work with Voice Command or any other voice dialing app?

I had a feeling this is a rush job with minimum fixes to calm down those who suffer from international roaming issues.

Let's hope there is still a WM6 update ahead

Posted by: CPTek

I am installing this update tommorow at work. I am glad they updated the logos, but to bad my phone still says Cingular on the case. I hope this fixes MANY of the other glitches with the phone I have been having. Mainly, with the Internet...

I think ill definetely pass. Im still a Cingular guy even with the "merge" Cellular Video?? Thats just silly

Orange is my fav color, not blue

GOOOOOO CINGULAR!!!

I did the upgrade. The bluetooth stack doesn't appear to be changed, or at least it's not working with MS Voice Command.

I can't get the update to detect my phone using version 4.5 of activesync, syncing itself works fine anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?

go to "File / Connection Settings / uncheck Allow USB connections" before turning back on in d/l mode.

Posted by: maevro

See, if it wasn't for this site I would have installed and lost everything I already have put on this phone. Maybe ill install it before i get rid of this phone.....

Posted by: bangbang023

I''m using Vista and the damn thing gets detected as a Samsung MTIB Mobile Sync or something along those lines and then the output on the BJ says "PC Connection Failed.

Posted by: Foxbat121

The modem driver is not compatible with Vista and the flash program isn't either. You'd have to find a XP machine to do it.

Does anyone have a link to download the Modem drivers for those of us that have misplaced the CD?

When I installed the upgrade, I noticed that OmapClock stopped working...

Got it to work by re-application unlocking my device.

well it sound like this update is not worth the time i changed all my logos anyway and i dont use a startup screen nor shutdown screen,so untill something better come out like the fix for bluetooth i'll just keep everything the same.

Good idea.

My own thought is that is a complete waste of time.

At least I validated that my Sprite Backup worked properly when restoring across ROM upgrades (well, almost - it missed a few settings, but no big deal)

for what its worth, i was able to get it to update using windows vista

I assumed (stupid me) that there would be SOMETHING improved. So far, the only substantive change I noticed other than the at&t logo (which I really don't give a damn about) is that the "chrip" I get from the phone when I plug in the power cord is a bit softer (now I don't wake up my wife at night when I plug my phone in for overnight charging) - But nothing else.

WM6 would be great - but for now, how about a BT stack that allows for Voice Command activation, and for switching BT devices without having to dive into setup screens...

What really angers me here is that my real fear about the at&t rebranding of Cingular is coming true - resouces are going into the rebranding at the expense of improving operational substance. Samsung could have - and would have - provided an update to BT, to WM6 or anything else if at&t had asked for it. But all at&t was concerned about was changing the branding.

Truly unfortunate.

I second your fears and if that proves to be correct I will switch to T-Mobile. They seem to take care of their customers.

Posted by: blackrazer

i agree, i think that is all they care about is the right logo's not the customer.I been thinking this along time here u give new customers a great deal to get the newest phones but exsiting customers have to wait. what deal is that i had to wait 2 months before getting a BJ.You would think take care of you're exsiting customers before new ones, so they don't leave.

Isn't this how most carriers are? It's all about getting new customers.

Posted by: CPTek

Installed the update. They didn't change the Cingular jack for the "Get Xpress Mail", option on the home screen, when the AT&T Default theme is applied.

Quote:

I had Cingular as my personal line, which I canceled under contract, but the ETF waived. I switched to T-Mobile, which I am happy with. I will say, I am very DISAPPOINTED with the amount of bugs in the Blackjack. My BlackJack and Cingular service is paid for by my company, otherwise I might have returned it because of the bugs.

Cingular is wasteing more and more money on this rebranding effort. Of course, that is less money that CS reps will get, and less benefits for the cutsomer.

Posted by: Foxbat121

You guys are way off topic here. If you go to official Cingular forums, there are couple of long threads about roaming issue in Brazil (phone is as good as a brick). Ppl over there even threaten to file class action law suit for false advertising BlackJack as quad band when it became zero-band when all four bands showed up. Obviously, Cingular listened to those guys and released this fix.

I'm as disappointed as you are for not much else is fixed in this release. But, keep in mind, if you're not experience any roaming issue or don't have any immediate plans to visit those affected countries, there is no need to waste your time applying the patch.

To some that doing business in those countries, it is a mission critical fix.

Posted by: iJITSU

The fact that the bluetooth stack wasn't changed doesn't suprise me. Why would AT&T/Cingular want the consumer to have another option besides its Voice Connect which it can charge its customers for?

Phone has to be powered off for that key sequence to work

I pressed the camera button with my right index finger, and then the right softkey with my right thumb. Then, with my left index finger, I pressed the power button. I had no issues with it entering download mode. But, like amg212 said, you must have the phone off first.

ok, got it! Although I'm disappointed that the AT&T ringtone is the same as Cingular's ringtone instead of Oasis' "Around the World".....maybe Cingular will give that to me for free.

Voice dial is a feature of the phone, but Voice Connect, which I referred to, is something AT&T/Cingular offers. Cingular would not be motivated to provide voice dialing that wasn't already there because the lack of it weighs in their favor as they offer an alternative for a fee. In regards to blaming Samsung, you may not realize the power the carrier has over the manufacture. If Cingular had stipulated that the Blackjack have voice dialing capabilities (or use the MS bluetooth stack) when they entered into an agreement with Samsung, it would be there. Regardless, I'm not blaming either. I wish it had the MS bluetooth stack. It doesn't. I'll move on to the first 3G smartphone that does, ditch the Blackjack, and be done with it.

Follow these instructions on the site and you should be able to download the file:

Is it true that battery life improves with that update? Confirmation from more then one source would be nice.
That would be a compelling reason to go for it then. Also, on the Cingular forum (for Samsung devices) there is (unofficiall) talk about a possible WM6 upgrade sometime this summer.

Posted by: dbarrett

I've been running the update since Friday and have noticed no improvement in battery life.

You are way, way off target here. Cingular sells plenty of handsets (including some Samsung ones) that have integrated voice dialing, even the really nice Voice Signal dialing (on the Blackberry Pearl and other phones).

It has been widely speculated that Samsung hobbled the Blackjack with a nonstandard Bluetooth API gateway for no other reason than to save battery life on a phone that already had miserable battery life to begin with.

Unless Samsung doing something very different, upgrading ROMs usually does not change your lock status.

I did the update. No problems.

The 'Cingular' banner is still there. Is that pushed by the network or is that part of the SIM card?

I hate it because it doesn't work with my Mac nor my car.

Looking at that sentence makes me sound really pompous, ugh!! But it's the truth -- I can't transfer to/from the Blackjack with my Mac (like I can with every other phone I've owned with Bluetooth) nor does it sync the address book or signal strength with my car.

It's almost like it's not even Bluetooth.

Longtime Mac user here and I use The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. Works great via USB but its flaky with a BT connection so I usually sync via USB. Samsung is known for a lousy BT stack. Just look at the few models that are supported via iSync. That said, The Missing Sync is far, far more capable than iSync could ever be and its flawless with the Blackjack.

Posted by: davgill

Missing Sync looks like great software, it's just a shame it's mandatory for us Mac users and the Blackjack as Apple has supported Bluetooth far more than MS has. Not to mention that it works like crap with my car. :-(

I hope a future software update fixes it but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't like it because it doesn't work with MS Voice Command, for me, the single most important use of the phone's bluetooth capabilities.

Yes you can, I do it everyday. Just go to the Mac forums and check out the bluetooth page. Internet sharing in Windows directory in the Blackjack needs to be changed to bluetooth, and you need missing sync. Go check it out, it gives all the directions.

I'm posting some questions for a **FRIEND** (wink) of mine:
1) Will this update disable tethering via BT in Windows or USB on Mac?
2) Will this update detect that you are using a Media Max plan instead of PDA Connect Plan?

My **FRIEND** is from Brazil, one of the countries affected by Cingular/AT&T and is traveling there in 4 days. I came across a manual method to get the phone to switch to the GSM bands used in Brazil and other countries affected. For the ones who are not aware of the problem, the GSM roaming issue occurs in coutries that have both European 900/1800 and American 850/1900 bands available. You go into the phone's debug menu, *#9999*0# >> MORE >> OPTION [8] Phone Control >> [7] GCF Test Mode >> [2] Band Preference >> [3] GSM Band Preference >> (Select Proper Band/Band Pair for the Brazilian (or other country's carrier) )

For Brazil:
VIVO (GSM 850)
TIM BRASIL (GSM 900/1800)
CLARO (GSM 900/1800)

I have not yet tested this in Brazil, but I've read a post from a frequent business traveler from another forum who go it working this way.

Of course Cingular/AT&T would not want average user's to go into the Phone's Debug Mode for a fix, but this fix would save me alot of time. Can anyone confirm that the above features are still working after the update?

Thanks

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is a problem or not with the upgrade but my phone doesn't automatically correct things like "youre" to be "you're" or "dont" to be "don't" anymore. It did it before the upgrade and I know haven't messed with any settings related to that. Anybody got any ideas?

I got my blackjack new on Sunday and wrote a few text messages and it automatically corrected those things. I never messed with any settings.

EDIT: Ok, maybe since I was using the 8125 for so long I was just imagining it auto fixed my text when I first used it.

Posted by: solo118

I don't seem to see any autotext on my BJ

Ok, I guess I was just imagining it then. I could have sworn it fixed a few words I typed.

Thanks

Agora it has 7 options on the menú

1 GSM 850
2 GSM 1900
3 GSM 850/1900
4 GSM 900
5 GSM 1800
6 GSM 900/1800
7 GSM ALL

Which menu? The Bandsel.exe Menu or the Menu from the Phone Debug Mode? I still haven't applied the update and my Phone Debug Mode menu, always had all the modes available.

Wirelessly posted (Blackjack: SAMSUNG-SGH-I607/I607FG1 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; Smartphone; 320x240) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

I noticed that the shortcuts for Cingular Music and Cingular Mall no longer work. For example, you used to be able to use Fn + M to quickly access Cingular Music.

Obviously, the Start Menu has changed for both with 'AT&T' replacing 'Cingular' for those items but I how do I re-enable those shortcuts?

I don't use either of those but I do use Fn + B to toggle BT often (which still works).

Any ideas? Thanks.

Phone Debug: That was your original question I beleive.

Bandselet has no change, which I thought was irritating..

Ok, I have read here that the Bluetooth stack hasn't changed. My main gripe with this phone is the fact that I have to set a "primary" bluetooth headset in the properties of the bluetooth. All other bluetooth headsets won't connect automatically. :P

Has that been fixed?

Is updating to this new version worth it?

Before answering if the update is worth it, is there a way to revert back to old ROM once the upgrade is done?

With the new radio version, has anyone noticed if the phone does less switching between 3G and Edge now? Also, has reception improved (as far as dropped calls)? I also periodically experience a problem where there is a data connection, but all web pages load blank pages until I either reboot or disconnect and reconnect the data. Maybe the new radio version fixed this as well?

He's talking about the ROM update that had better roaming capabilities for other countries.

There is no FM receiver in the BJ.

Does anybody have hard facts on what the roaming improvements were?

This has not been fixed. It's a real pain.

It was not a matter of roaming needing improvement. It wasn't working AT ALL for certain countries (I.E. Australia, Thailand, Brazil, etc) that had European and American GSM Bands available. It is discussed in detail in the Cingular forum.

I am in Brazil right now, and right after landing, I received SMS from Brazil's 2 biggest GSM carriers (CLARO and TIM) asking me to select their network to roam.

I have done the update just before leaving the US, so it is apparently workinga

Well yes I know all that about the issue. The Samsung web site talking points say;

This update should enhance roaming capabilities, especially Internationally

Did the update last night but I was sure to backup everythign I had using Sprite. I partnered it with my PC after the update, however now after only syncing once, Activesync thinks it's a Guest. Anyone else have this problem? I went it and deleted the profiles in both the phone and the software, but it still will only connect as a Guest. I haven't tried reinstalling Activesync yet, I just thought I would check to see if anyone else has had this problem.

I believe the update instructions asked not use back up/restore software but instead to synch with you PC then synch again after the update.

It sounds like a lot ,but I had to uninstall Mcafee Virus Scan. im sure there was a better way to do get around it but that was my solution

Make sure the file is located on your computer locally. I tried running it from a network share mapped to my pc and I got that error.

I have not yet tested this in Brazil, but I've read a post from a frequent business traveler from another forum who go it working this way.

the above hack worked for me. The only problem I had is that with TIM the network kept on sending me SMSs every 10 seconds with the info from the start-up screen that goes to their phone. I believe with the above hack I was able to set the frequency to "Auto" which then caused the phone to work in Brazil + USA...another thing, Cingular claimed to me that the phone was unlocked but it was a lie, and I had to pay to unlock it when I was in Brazil. From looking at the GCF Band pref menu after the update I think this is what they did...perhaps all they did in this kinda pointless update it seems.

I did the update today. Anyone know of a way to easily remove the Cingular logo from the bottom of my phone? I'm a little OCD about them not matching.
