Hey BB users...

I am a phone junkie like most of you and i currently have the motorola Ming (a1200) and the Moto Rizr.

I recently baught someone a bb 8700 (not as a gift, i was reimbursed) but i played with it before i sent it out and i was addicted.

I am now thinking of trading my a1200 for a bb...

I do not want a Data plan cause they cost an arm and a leg

so my questions are..

1. is it worth it to buy it as an organizer, phone etc
2. if i wanted to access google maps and some e-mail (not heavy) what data plan would be the best?
3. is it worth it to get the 8800 or would the 8700 be sufficent enough for what i want it for?

thanks in advance

blackberrys rock period!
but i do like the a1200, but im a fan of anything running linux

1. yes it is, as long as the trackwheel/trackball dont bother you.. but way cooler with data

2. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=885691 (make sure you read a little ways in to it for accurate info)

3. both are great devices. 8700 is tried and true ,very solid. 8800 brand new but is seeming very nice. alot of cool features like multimedia and gps

You have to have a BB dataplan for email and Internet. Since you didn't list which carrier you are using, we can't give you an idea of the cost.

If you only use the phone and calendar, you can get a cheaper device to do that, plus you aren't taking advantage of all of the BBs features.

You need to look at the 8700 and 8800 in person and make your own decision. You will probably get about as many votes for either one.

I suggest you either call the carrier or look at their website for BB data plans.

thanks guys..

i know u need a bb plan to use the internet etc.

but i switch phones so i used my Rizr one month and the ming the other.. so paying for a data plan every month is kinda useless but then again i guess i have to make that choice haha..

i never researched BB .. just thought it was cool after playing around with one.. just don;t know if it'll be worth it..

but we'll see...

i;m with Rogers in Canada and i found the dataplan prices.. just i wasn';t sure about how they determine the price..

0.5mb of data .. how is that measured?

Rogers have a BIS plan? Internet, email, sms, mms, all included? Cing/at&t have it for 29.00 a month.

the reason i posted my link in # 2 is that you can get away with cheap wap plan if your cool with using 3rd party browser/email app

and i understand why he would not want
candian data plans are high

Don't think that will work with a BB. From all I have heard and read, you have to have a BB dataplan for email and Internet. Everything has to go via RIM's servers. There aren't any 3rd party email applications for the BB. Plus I think if you are using WAP, you can get hit with a surprise data charge.

If you just want voice and SMS and the calender/address book functions, then I agree, you do not need the dataplan.

it can, ive done it myself multiple times

i have a pearl in the desk right around the corner fom me with a MEdiaNet plan on it
tcp set to wap.cingular

just blackberry based services such as blackberry email and the blackberry/medianet/mds browser wont work

opera mini, gmail's mail app, google maps, verichat, etc... work fine

in the sticky at the top of the forum there is several pages worth of discussion on the subject

It can work. Just don't expect it to work as carriers will disable your ability to do so if they find out. Worse, they can (and do) back-charge you for data at the per-use rate.

1. It's your judgement call. Some people are very happy with a BB used in such a manner, some aren't.
2. The BIS-only data plans are the cheapest option. Pricing varies with carrier. I'd suggest getting an unlimited plan at first if you don't know exactly how much data you'll use. However, I don't think the Canadian carriers offer (true) unlimited BB data plans. 0.5MB is very very little data.
3. Again, it's your call. The 8800 has better media support (virtually none on the 8700) and built-in GPS. However, the 8700 is still a great device.

let me backup... my info is specific to GSM carreirs
that being said
it will work provided your carrier has tcp/ip and provisions your account with the appropriate apn
and i would expect it to work, as long as its a BB with 4.x OS

biggest side effect... MMS rarely works with this type of setup

as far as getting flagged, blocked, charged, etc... by your carrier that is up for debate. aside from a bb imei regstering on their network, there would be no abnormal activity from your account and no reason for them to raise a flag

at any rate, im not gonna argue this subject in this thread
if you think im wrong, we can continue the duscussion in this thread http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=885691

getting back to pImPin V3c's quesiton
i wouldnt get one at retial price if your not gonna be using with data
but if you can find a sweet deal go for it
blackberrys rock
if you enjoyed your ming without data, you could surely enjoy a bb without one too

No need to argue -- my statements are based on real world experiences. It's a gamble and personally not worthwhile. It might be for others that don't need push email or other data services on a regular basis.

Posted by: allenlikewo

we can agree on that part
i would never consider it for my self
i do need my email and other data services, daily

my friend for example, won a free pearl and was previously using a regular nokia phone. and now uses the pearl as her primary phone (phone being most imporant) but has 5mb of free meidanet a month. so takes advantage of it and uses opera and a few other apps... to her its less a blackberry and more a really neat phone
