Is there an application that display and allow the input of Chinese characters?

Your best bet is to find an OS update for the 8800 that includes Chinese input support. The only OS versions available are from Cingular and O2 right now, but when the 8800 gets released for a Chinese or Australian carrier you'll be able to load it. Telstra (australian) usually releases their OS's with Chinese/English support.

So in other words, it's a no right now? Do you know if the Pearl's OS has Chinese support?

Yes, the Telstra release of the pearl OS has Chinese support.

Is the OS locked to specific carrier? Do I need to unlock the device in order to install BB updates from other carriers?

No, it's not locked to a specific carrier. No, you don't need to unlock your device. I'm running the Telstra 4.2.1.102 (English) release on my t-mobile pearl right now.

You will need to look in the following thread to see how to install an OS from a different carrier:
http://www.blackberryforums.com/rin...1-4-2-only.html
Instructions are below all the OS listings.
The thread lists the TIM (Italy) OS as the latest (4.2.1.102), but Telstra has the same OS version with Chinese support. Use the alx file listed for the TIM release, but download and install the telstra version that you need. You can find the Telstra release by starting here:

Hong Kong CSL has a purely Chinese variant for the 8800 listed on their webpage (as well as a Multilanguage), so if you want to go 100% pinyin then maybe give it a shot:

Not discrediting H-bomb, but the 4.2.1.X OS from Telstra is working for some people, and not working for others; if you want stability and known 100% working, use the "older" (even though it's not old) 4.2.0.X download instead -- it's found on the same download page.

Thanks rivvah; I should have mentioned that the newest OS release has stability problems for some people.

You should be able to find an older release that supports any language you want. Just start with the link I posted before that has links to all carriers' download pages and go from there.
