I have a 8100 my carrier is T-mobile, now I know that T-mobile has an agreement with Cingular/AT&T where I can roam on their network for free. Well I found that I lose my EDGE capabilities a lot in my area of town. So I was browsing through the settings on my 8100. I went to Options --> Network and changed network selection to "Manual" then I scanned for available networks and selected Cingular. Now I have EDGE all the time and a stronger signal. I told my friend who works for Cingular about it and he said that there is nothing that they can do because of the agreement with T-mobile. Just thought I would share this, sorry if this is old news.

I am guessing you are in California? That roaming agreement is part of the FCC deal Cingular agreed to when acquiring AT&T Wireless. It will come to an end at some point in the next year or so.
If not California, where are you? It is unusual for you to be able to roam on Cingular when T-Mobile has service in the area and vice versa. It's obviously cheaper for carriers to provide you sevice from their own towers. I am curious if this is going on somewhere else.

You can't roam onto Cingular if T-Mobile has service there.
If you are in an area with no T-Mobile coverage (not weak coverage - no coverage) the Cingular towers will let you connect. So the manual network connection works.
But drive to a spot with T-Mobile coverage and you will have no coverage at all.
Be careful with this.

I am actually in central Indiana. I used to roam on Cingular all the time with my Sidekick my data wouldn't work but my voice calls would. I only switch it if I need to look something up real fast and I do not have EDGE in that area. I learned about this from another friend who works for T-mobile who showed my girl how to do it.
