SMT 5600 - can't do a hard reset- HELP!!

This morning, my SMT 5600 started behaving strangely. The action button would either start the camera or prompt me to speak at the Audio prompt.

I decided a hard reset was needed. I have done it before without any problem. However, now when I try to do a hard reset by holding down the two soft keys and pressing the Power button, I get a strange screen that I have never seen before. It looks as follows:

There are three horizontal bars with different colors and text.

Top bar, red color with the following text:
Typhoon
IPL 1.00

Middle bar, green color with the following text:
Typhoon
SPL 1.01.000

Bottom bar, blue color with the following text:
Typhoon

I get the same screen when I do
Start/.../Accessories/Clear Storage

Since I had taken out the battery and SIM in one of my many attempts to reset the phone, the date has been reset to 09/20/04, and I cannot update it without using the Left Action button. Luckily, the phone functions still work, but the calendar and web access, which I use the most, are unusable.

Suggestions, anyone?
