LG 8600 Hacking thread

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Karnage420

just bought it, id imagine its very similar to the 8500.

if its not, lets make it happen.

i need animated gifs, mp3 ringtones, wallpapers.

Posted by: Karnage420

ok, so gifs and wallpapers were as easy as the 8100. just transfer from the mem card.

but how about mp3 ringers?!

Posted by: mccraig

MP3 Ringers off the memory card ARE possible. I was speaking with tech support at Telus (An English Accent'd Woman), trynig to resolve issues with Mobile TV. When that was resolved, I asked about MP3 Ringers off the memory card (rather then using a USB Cable). She was telling me the first few steps when my Skype Phone acccidentally got unplugged and I lost my connection with the woman.

I called back and another woman answered but refused to tell me how to do custom ring tones on the phone, she said Telus does not support that. BUT I KNOW it's possible without a transfer cable because the other woman was telling me how to do it!!! ARGH!!!

Posted by: Rodneyc8063

Ask for a name? Or ask to be transferred to that particular associate since she was dealing with an issue with you.

Do IT!!!!!! For all of us!!!!!!

I havent figured out ringtones from the memory card but i have got all kinds of mp3 ringtones on my 8600

Please do tell as to how this was done?

Are you on telus? I noticed your located in the states

Posted by: idfx

although i dont have this phone myself, i think sgtdawg used the lg8500 method.
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1037702

as for the ringtones on memory card, theres a chance it could be the same as the lg8100, if not, im sure the 8600 has plenty of internal memory.

I tried to use same way, and it generates exception during sending data to phone.

The files are in the folder, but phone doesn't recognize it.
It may require same step with

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=688705

Especially these steps below

7. go to \dload\
8. right click "my_ringtone.dat", select delete.
9. right click "my_ringtonesize.dat", select delete.

Can someone try it?

I used the 8500 method to load the mp3 ringtone on the 8600, but when i tried to assign it as ringtone, it gave me the DRM error. how did you by pass it?

Posted by: Karnage420

uh oh

i seriously hope custom mp3 ringers can be set...

Okay so, i got bluetooth working and was able to access the filesystem using BitPim. I can load the MP3 onto the phone no problem but I ran into some snags.

1) The DRM error when i try to assign the ringtone, i tried tree different ways and ended up with the same message.

a) Menu > Music & Media > Ringtone
b) Menu > Settings > Sound > Blah, Blah, Blah ... Caller ID > Downloaded
c) Tried custom Ringer for contacts

No matter what, i always got the same DRM error

2) I could only load one mp3 file at a time, anymore than that and the phone would not recognize any other file but the first one i loaded. Just thought that was weird.

Overall though, it was still a million times easier to access the filesystem than my samsung or v265 ever was. If anyone is having trouble getting the bluetooth to work just let me know and i will post instructions.

i have been unsuccessesful with the bluetooth method but cable that i bought off ebay works just fine

Posted by: Zyepher

damn. you know its bad when its that hard to get mp3 ring tones uploaded

Posted by: kil78

Found out that under dload folder,

oma_ringtonesize.dat
oma_ringtone.dat

Files contain ringtone information. It is DIFFERENT from Verizon!! I deleted those two files, reboot my phone (DO NOT SEND PHONE DATA using bitpim. just copy is good enough), and it finally worked!
But have to follow same step everytime I want to add more custom ringtones

Lg 245 had the same drm protection file thing. and thanks to some nice hofo members there is a way around it. I'm almost 100% this will work on this phone too....here is the post and the link.

http://howardforums.com/showthread....0&highlight=245

Hi all,
I've appreciated the past posts on file transfer by truthlesshero, et al. So, I thought I'd add what I've found: basically a summary for image and mp3/ringtone file transfer.

To start, I'm connecting to my LG 245 (Telus) via a bluetooth connection. [I believe there may be USB connectors, and the principle ought to be the same.] From your PC, pair with the phone and connect the bluetooth Serial Port. It should connect on a COM port (ie - COM5 for me). Using BitPim (http://www.bitpim.org/), setup the BitPim Settings to use your corresponding bluetooth/serial COM port. For 'Phone Type', it seems to work with LG-VX8100, 8300, and also "Other CDMA phone". Once configured select the Filesystem icon on the left menu (NB: none of the other functions will work, such as "Get/Send Phone Data"). From the Filesystem menu, you should see your root (/) and various directories: OWS, VoiceDB, ..., brew, etc. At this point you can send files to and from your phone, so we're off to the races.

Images: Ok, so I can't figure out a graceful way to do these... The issue is that the phone's filesystem will not recognize your image files that you transfer via BitPim because it needs to update an index file that tells it how many images it actually has. So the options are: 1) download /dload/image.dat and modify the HEX file. (2) [the easier way] is to take photos (with the phone's camera), rename them and then copy your image file to brew/16452/mp/ using that existing name (ie - overwriting the file). This seems to be the easiest way.

MP3s: For the same filesystem/indexing issue as with the images, you will have to do some HEX/dat file editing. Download a freeware HEX editor online (google it- there are many). So the first thing to do is to copy your MP3 file over to /brew/16452/mds/ (I'm guessing mds stands for MyDownloadedSounds). I suggest cropping the file as you don't need anything too long for a ringtone (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ works nicely for editing mp3s). Anyway, once the file has uploaded to the phone, go to /dload/aod.dat. Delete this file (I suggest backing it up first, just to be on the safe side). Restart your phone (turn off, then on again). The phone will re-generate this dat file and you will now see the MP3 that you uploaded in the list. Unfortunately, it will not be recognized as a ringtone as it's not Telus's DRM-MP3 (ie - Telus's squeezing-blood-from-a-stone method of collecting their fees). Next...the HEX editing:

Download aod.dat to your PC via BitPim and view it in a HEX editor:
In the file, I see multiple entries - one per audio file. So from byte address 0x00 to 0x93 [#147 in decimal] (that's 0 to 93 in hexadecimal = base 16) is a single entry. Viewing the ASCII representation, starting at 0x00, I see four characters (xx 03 06 04 in HEX) followed by "brew/16452/mds/filename.mp3". Nearer the end of the 0x93 character block, there are two other words of 4 and three bytes.
For those who care, the first byte/character is a running count, the groups of four and three at the end of the entry block are related to the file's properties (file size, etc).
So the important part: change the byte at address 0x03 from 04 to 00. Then change the byte at address 0x84 (#132) from 00 to 01.
Send this updated aod.dat file back to your phone. The first file should be unlocked for use as a ringtone.
This pattern works for all of the files on my phone. So you can upload more MP3s and edit each 148-character block in the same two positions.
NB: your phone is only set to take "downloads" up to 5MB, so if you exceed that limit, the aod.dat file will not be regenerated for all of the files. In this case you can enter the 148-byte entries manually.
If the pattern doesn't work for you, I suggest downloading a free Ringtone from Telus (tocatta, Bach - under 'Free Trial' if you log into the mytelusmobility site. NB: charges may apply for accessing the web via your phone ~5 cents per page). I recommend downloading that free ringtone, viewing your aod.dat file and looking at how it differs. You can then apply those changes to unlock your other MP3s.

Alright, that's what I've found so far. Hopefully, we'll be able to figure out the Java games/apps for this phone too!

how did you set your own mp3 as ringer, do you just upload the mp3 file via usb cable, then delete oma_ringtonesize.dat & oma_ringtone.dat insdie dload folder. or you still need to use the hex editor to mod the file in the file system?

Posted by: Karnage420

upping for great justice

Posted by: TomCat39

Doesn't power cycling update your dat files for images and such?

I know with the 8500, just a reboot doesn't quite do it. But when you upload say a video (3g2) and then turn the phone off, pull the battery for about 10 seconds, then return the battery and turn the phone back on. It adds the files to the internal index lists and shows in the phone.

Now as for mp3's.... Couldn't tell you, being the 8500 doesn't have the DRM issue.

How does the ContentInfo and ExecutionInfo in the brew/16452/ams/db folder look?

Anyone have them before downloading anything from telus?

I'm wondering if they are the same format as the 8500's.....

Posted by: kil78

power cycle doesn't update dat files for ringtones.

Posted by: idfx

so basically, follow the same process as the 8500,
but delete the .dat files?
and dont send data, just reboot?

ill try this on my friends phone later tonight.

Posted by: sgtdawg

i didnt mod anything just used cable and bitpim and uploaded the ringtone then boom done

Are you using Telus chocolate flip (LG 8600) or from other carrier??

Posted by: sgtdawg

a 8600 on Verizon cant possibly be that different.

Posted by: aplen22

yes, it is different, that has already been established. the main difference being of course the DRM issue with the ringtones. My question is, has anyone tested the removal of the dat files yet?

I removed the "oma_ringtonesize.dat" & "oma_ringtone.dat", then reboot the pc, but it doesn't help..

Posted by: Rodneyc8063

phones can be quite diffrent, despite being the same model across of carriers. The way things are programmed into it can vary greatly, as are the loopholes to get around said programming.

Though i do appreciate anyones input

Posted by: opium2k

I got it to work!
I have the usb driver installed but i dont know if it needs it since I used bluetooth but heres what i did:

1. set up your bluetooth connection and note the com port it uses (mine was comport 5)
2. open bitpim and go to edit>settings
3. set the phone type to LG-VX8000 (not sure if it has to be set to this)
4. manually set the com port
5. open the filesystem
6. go to the brew>16452>mds directory
7. paste your ringtones
8. go to the DLOAD folder
9. delete oma_ringtone.dat & oma_ringtonesize.dat
10. power cycle phone (just right click anywhere in filesystem and select reboot phone) you dont need to "send phone data" in bitpim. a power cycle is sufficient.
11. check your phone and they should be there

I realize this is basically just a re-post of what has been said before but hopefully it will clear things up for ppl who are/were having trouble.

Posted by: opium2k

on further review the method i listed above only allows you to view and play the files. when you try to set them as a ringtone it says: NON-DRM media can not be used for ringtone.

i've tried changing the file type to 3gp and dm but neither of them have worked for me. I have also tried adding DRM using the sony ericsson and Nokia software. That didnt work either. So at this point I'm out of ideas please help

Has anyone read this????? this will make ur mp3's work!!!

Posted by: kil78

For those who got confused -
The easiest way (without touching any files from dload folder) to set custom mp3 as a ringtone is by overwriting the telus free midi file.

1. from browser, go to "free trial", then download the trial ringtone. (tocatta.mid)

2. Rename your custom mp3 file to "tocatta.mid"

3. Open bitpim, then open the folder "/brew/16452/mds/"

4. copy your own "tocatta.mid" into the folder.

5. Enjoy your new version of tocatta

If you check the memory info, the total used size of "download" folder is still 1k, but if you check the file detail, you'll see changed size. Don't worry about it - you can still hear full version of the mp3!

Posted by: marleycobain

does this method require a data cable or does bitpim work through bluetooth?
also, is it probably that there will eventually be an easier method?

Posted by: SU-FI

Does anyone know whether the lg data cable is proprietary, or if one from a motorola will work?

If so, if there's anyone out there with the usb drivers for the 8600, I'm sure we'd all love to download them.

For some reason, Bitpim is not detecting my 8600 using bluetooth...

any ideas why?

so we can only get one ringtone onto the phone to be recognized?

this is the worst hacking thread ever..

Posted by: onu8600

also having trouble detecting with bluetooth... have the latest mac version of bitpim (only my bro's mac has bluetooth)
tried with lgvx8000, 8100, 8500, 8600

How did you exactly set up bitpim? (first time using it)

Posted by: opium2k

With the Bluetooth method Bitpim will not "automatically recognize" the phone. However it does still see it... kinda.
The only part of bitpim you can access using bluetooth is the filesystem.
ie. It will say that phone detection failed but you can still go into the filesystem portion of the program and manually edit it.
I just wish someone would figure out how to effectively bypass the DRM crap cuz at present I'm completely out of ideas

How crippled is the 8600 from telus? Did they kill it pretty bad or what?

Just wondering whether anyone has tried the Verizon trick for getting ringtones on this phone of sending the file in a pic message to themselves, then saving it to the phone. I'm looking at purchasing this phone, but I'd like to know if there is a non-cable method of putting custom ringers on this phone.

Also, here's the text I copied of another method which may or may not work, just throwing it out there on the off chance it might..

"Put the file on the SD card (the folder you will need to choose is in the LG_MEDIA\other_image. If you want to add a ringer, add it to the other_sounds folder.

Go into the My Media option and choose whatever you added to the card

Move to the Downloaded folder

Scroll over to the picture that you added, press the right soft key which is the options key

Choose Option 5 which is move

This will bring up a prompt asking if you want to move to phone, choose 1 to move it to the phone

If you then take the card out of your phone and look on the card, you will see that the pic/ringer has been transferred from the card to the phone."

Im getting a similar message.. should i just get a cable to do this? stupid phone companies and their damn greedy ways!!

Posted by: super strokey

Hey i just got this phone, im a total noob to phones but when i go to add stuff to the SDcard it says that its write protected... wtf is the point of an interface if you cant use it? Its is useless? I want to put some songs and mp3s (for ringers) on it but dont know how. All help appreciated, im a total noob too so not too much lingo please lol.

Posted by: aplen22

Okay kids, so since everyone is having so much trouble with the bluetooth connection and other stuff I thought i would finally step in. FIRST, no TELUS did not completely cripple the bluetooth so from here on out, please get that out of your heads!! SECOND, these methods are for the TELUS Flip Chocolate ONLY!! THIRD, I will thus be using the tocatta method for custom ringtones as this is the only known method right now.

Finally, configuring bluetooth to access the filesystem on the 8600 is a piece of cake. Just follow these instructions!!!

CONFIGURING TO USE BLUETOOTH

1) If you don't already have a BT dongle, get one, you kinda need it to connect your phone. This will give your computer a bluetooth connection through USB (i am using one made my microsoft, came with my BT mouse).

2) THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ONE!
On your phone, go MENU > SETTINGS > OTHERS > DATA SETUP > PC CONNECTION > BLUETOOTH
(not sure if this makes a difference but its how i configured my phone)

3) Next, pair the phone with your computer (I can't tell you how to do this one because everyone's dongle comes with different software. But the thing that you do need to have as an end result is under the available services of the phone, once it is paired properly, is a recognized com port for the serial port (SPP) service (mine is COM 5, this seems to be the most common port). You will need to remember this com port later for when you configure Bitpim. Without successfully completing step three, bitpim will not work!!

4) Now once you have paired your phone with your computer and you know the com port the serial port service is functioning on you can now tell bitpim how to connect to the phone.

FIRST...What am i using
- BITPIM Version 0.9.13 (official)
- I do have the USB driver for the phone installed (not sure again if this makes a difference but thats how i did it)

5) In bitpim go to EDIT > SETTINGS

6) Under PHONE TYPE choose LG-VX8600
ASIDE: i am using the verison version of this, currently as there is no telus version out, for those who are going WTF right now, just ignore this aside.

7) Next under COM PORT on the right side there is a browse button, you do not need your phone connected, this will just browse all your com ports for bluetooth services that you can connect to.

8) Be patient, this can take a while, once you have your list you want to choose STANDARD SERIAL OVER BLUETOOTH LINK (COMX) with the X in the com being the com port your phone is on that you recorded earlier.

VERY IMPORTANT ASIDE: You should have two Standard over serial BT links to choose from. For example on my machine one is COM 5, the other, COM 6. DO NOT choose the secondary port as this is the secondary link to your phone and will not allow you to connect properly. For those who want to know what this port is, your ports for your phone to connect through BT are one way for transmitting data, thus, one is for incoming data, the other, for outgoing data. However you just need to specify one for bitpim (ie. the primary port).

9) Highlight the correct com port and click OK, you should now see right next to COM PORT in the white box, the com port number that you want to connect to.

10) Once you have these things configured you are ready to connect to your phone through BT. Click OK to save your settings.

11) Go to VIEW > VIEW FILESYSTEMS and check that menu item off. Once you do this you should see the filesystem selection popup on the left side
right above LOG.

12) Click on the left side filesystem icon, then in the next window to the right you should see a folder popup with a plus sign to the left of it.

13) Click on the plus sign to expand the file listing on your phone (this is when bitpim will try to connect to your phone) BE PACIENT!!

14) If a bunch of folders popup in the same window then you did it! If not, curse the world a little bit and read over the instructions to make sure you didn't miss anything.

THE TOCATTA CUSTOM RINGTONE METHOD

1) First go on to the browser and download the free ringtone tocatta from TELUS.

2) Next pick your fav song to have as a ringtone, cut it up using an audio editing program and save it as an mp3. I try to also drop the decibel volume of the song about -6db so as to not have the song sound distorted as it plays from the tiny speaker in the phone.

3) On your computer go, START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW tab

4) Under files and folders uncheck HIDE EXTNSIONS OF KNOWN FILETYPES, click OK to save that setting.

5) Next go to where you saved your mp3 ringtone and RIGHT CLICK the file and choose RENAME.

6) Next rename the file exactly "tocatta.mid" (without the quotes) and hit ENTER.

7) Windows should then ask you if you want to change the extension of the file and you should then say YES. Your file should now be called tocatta.mid, don't worry if it doesn't play anymore it doesn't matter. Windows just doesn't know it's an MP3.

ASIDE: Mac users, your operating system handles file extensions differently so i'm not sure if this same method would work, so currently this is a WINDOWS ONLY method. Perhaps a MAC user could help me out in a later post.

8) Next fire up Bitpim and access the filesystem (for instructions to do this, see above). Go to brew > 16452 > mds. You should now see your originally downloaded tocatta.mid file. Right click on that file in the far right window and at this point if you want to save it go ahead. Then from that same menu click OVERWRITE.

9) Bitpim will ask you for your file and just point it to your newly created custom ringtone call tocatta.mid then click OPEN.

10) BE PACIENT!! It might take a while to transfer the file, you'll know it has completed when the circle at the very bottom left of the Bitpim program window changes from RED (BUSY) to GREEN (READY).

11) Once the file has transferred, POWER CYCLE your phone (press END to turn it off, wait 3 seconds, or if your really anal, pull the battery out and put it back in, the turn the phone back on).

12) Go to MENU > MUSIC & MEDIA > RINGTONES and try to play your new tocatta ringtone.

CUSTOM TELUS MUSIC PLAYER USER INTERFACE

Enjoy the custom space themed interface made for the Chocolate Flip. Just grab the file 11.jar from the folder brew > ams > 11 and follow these instructions to have a little fun!

1) Save the file 11.jar to your computer, don't forget to back up a second copy as we are going to modify this one.

2) Change the extension of the file from .jar to .zip to open it (again instructions on how to change file extensions can be found in the ringtone tutorial above). Unzip the files to a folder.

3) Download the new theme pack file from here...
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R9UVFDKR

4) Unzip the files to a folder and copy them to the other unzip folder containing the original files from the 11.jar file off the phone.

5) Windows will ask to replace some files and just say YES.

6) Once the files have successfully copied, zip the files in the folder up in a zip file.
NOTE: zip up the files ONLY, do not copy the folder that the files are in back into another zip file so as to have that folder "nested" in the zip file. Basically this means, once you have re-ziped everything up, if you open that zip file you see all the files that were just like in the original .jar file when you first opened it. If you open your new zip file and see a folder your the reason why i had to write this note!!

7) Change the extension back to .jar so your file should be once again called 11.jar with the new skin contents.

8) Upload to the phone using the same replacement method mentioned above in the ringtone tutorial. Basically, rather than replacing the tocatta.mid file your now replacing the 11.jar file in the same fashion.

9) POWER CYCLE your phone, open Mobile music and enjoy!

If any of these tutorials are confusing, let me know and i will post some elaborations on steps for those having troubles.

Bye for now kids!

aplen22, can you post some pics on your custom mobile player interface?

Thanks

Download the new theme pack file from here...
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R9UVFDKR

HERE ARE SOME PICTURES

Posted by: benjybl

If I wanted to create my own theme, using my own pictures, how would I go about doing so? Just replace the ones in your pack with ones of identical dimensions of my own?

There's actually a great thread here on how to make a custom UI
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1068896

But yes, if you want that is all you need to do, just replace what is there in my package i made. Hope this is a nice add to the list of hacks already on this thread!

Is there any way to get the ringers off of the sd card yet? Seems odd that you cant. Also can i use pictures off of my sd card to personallize it?

Posted by: onu8600

First I would like to confirm that the tocotta method does in fact work with a mac. The mp3 is converted into a mid without any troubles (just a pop up.. select switch to .mid).

(I used the new 0.9.14 (official) version of bitpim). (dont forget to turn on MENU > SETTINGS > OTHERS > DATA SETUP > PC CONNECTION > BLUETOOTH)

Difference: you need to click on the bluetooth icon in the top right, and then configure a new device (its very easy!!). Next using bitpim I set the com port, and you should be able to tell which one it is.. as the name of your phone is in it. Also, set your phone to vx-8600. It will try and auto detect, and will fail (never worked for me). HOWEVER, if you go into the file system and click expand, it will work! (really wierd), and go into brew/16452/mds and right click and replace with your new tocatta mid.

Heres an idea.. you could buy cheap ringtones from telus and replace those to have more custom ringtones on the go.

Thanks to everyone that has worked on this!!!

super strokey...
No, you cannot pull ringtones off your microSD, let alone do it easily (yet) with other methods! Telus has made it difficult to change ringers (is possible.. see above post by aplen22). You have to work with the filesystem for now.

As for the pictures.. knock yourself out! Find some cool free backgrounds and such on the net (for phones.. because of sizes) and put them on your sd in the picture folder. Next, go into (music & media)/myalbums/externalmemory/pictures and select 'options' and move. It will ask if you want to move your pic to the phone.. select yes.
Now go into settings and select your new background (front or back!).

I cant speak for all motorolas, but i know that a razor cable will not work.. as it is a common usb cable.. included with many cameras. if you buy a cable, make sure it comes with usb drivers.

Regarding the tocotta ringtone method, what happens if you want more then one ringtone? Will it take multiple tocotta ringtones?

Yup, you can d/l more tocotta ringtones...name them tocotta1, tocotta2, tocotta3....then using the same method to rename the ringtones you want to transfer

I have myself 7-10 tocatta customized ringtones now...haha

Posted by: super strokey

anyone know a good place to get good back backgrounds for this phone? I want a 24 back ground lol

Okay, i downloaded the tocatta.mid ringtone from telus, uploaded my own ringtone to replace it(i had the spelling right so dont worry), and I see it in my ringers menu, but when I try to select it, it says "NON-DRM PROTECTION, ETC"
wtf?

... anyone wanna help me out plz?

did you remeber to power cycle the phone after uploading?!

I didnt power cycle my phone after uploading my custom ringtone..

dc2000.. did you make sure that your file is now a .mid?? you could have renamed your custom .mp3 to tocotta.mid.mp3 (where tocotta.mid is the name of the file and mp3 is the file type). You should have seen some kind of message that confirms that you want to change the file type.
what you need to do
--->go to folder options, then to view, and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types"
Then when you look at your mp3's you will see that the extensions are now showing.. and change .mp3 to .mid

Hope this works/helps!

You can rename the file to whatever you want, why rename it tocatta7, when you can actually just rename it to the song you plan on replacing it with? That's what I have done, having multiple tocatta's is such a pain.

Posted by: benjybl

My sentiments exactly..

Although, I do have one question. It's been a while since I've downloaded the free ringtone...is it still totally free? or do they ding you with the $0.50 download fee? Because, after a while, they'll begin to add up...

Posted by: dc2000

yup,

tried it all.. I'm A+ certified so im not a noob lol.. but.. I don't understand why Telus's UI truely sucks? I'll try it again and I'll report back in 15-20 mins.. Thx every1

Posted by: Massonite

Anyone get one of those custom mp3 player UI's to work? I tried the strawberry one but it looked funny. Perhaps it's only for the 8500.

How 'bout some games on this thing?

Posted by: onu8600

I'd like to get some games on it too.. but there doesnt seem to be any good ones for the 8600 from telus! still would be cool to be able to hack them in though...

Posted by: benjybl

...that's kind of what I meant

lol

Posted by: onu8600

?? all you said was 'How 'bout some games on this thing?' and i said the games suck.
thats what you meant?

Posted by: benjybl

Well ya...we're in a thread about hacking this phone, including getting ringtones for free. I would assume that when I mentioned getting games in the same thread, the implication would be that I would want them for free, or "hack them on."

Also, usually when people complain about wanting to get games on their phone on THIS forum, generally being one for hacking one's phone, getting them on for free is implied. Apologies if my true intent was not conveyed.

Posted by: Massonite

I wonder how hard it would be to create skins to replace the ugly UI

Posted by: benjybl

Good luck with that, although I'm not sure if that will work. Phones that support skins, such as Motos, Nokias, etc, all use their own manufacturer's firmware, and not the bastardi$ed one put on there by Telus. Telus' firmware doesn't support skins, and I'm not sure if a way to directly hack into the firmware has been discovered, so you may be SOL in that area. Too bad, though....

On a positive note, I did hear that Firmware 2.0 was in the works, hopefully something to replace that ugly purple and green!

Again, I said that the games suck for the 8600, implying that it may be pointless to try and hack games on. (and then mentioned that I still think it would be cool to have the ability to do so). HOW IS THAT THE SAME!
Anyway, this is the last time im replying to your pointless comments. My apologies if you cant read.

...beg pardon?

Just because you don't understand what this thread's about does not mean you have to flame those who are trying to tell you.

You said "the games suck for the 8600 FROM TELUS" ........ which is DEFINITELY NOT the same as hacking our own on. I really am at a loss here...are you sure it is I who cannot read?

When one posts on HoFo, especially in a thread called "LG 8600 Hacking Thread," it is expected that one is attempting to hack one's phone. Simple as that. Thus, when I posted "how 'bout some games on this thing?" it should be apparantly obvious (my apologies if it was not) that I was indeed trying to HACK MY OWN GAMES ON, not download them from Telus. If I was trying to do that, I'd say "what are the games from Telus like on this phone?"

Also, how does your saying "the games for the 8600 suck from Telus" imply anything at all relating to hacking our own on, and how pointless it may or may not be? Think about it. You say the games suck, am I then supposed to assume that a) hacking my own games is not going to be possible, and that b) getting my own games FROM THE INTERNET will ALL suck, simply because the ones Telus has to offer do? No. Does anybody else think this way? Please, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

You just misintrepreted my comments, and then flamed me regarding your error, and that's really not my fault. It's yours.

Is it possible to change the ringer for a text message or voice mail alert?
Ive had no problem with the tocatta method for mp3 ringtones, however I am interested in doing the same for txt messages, is this possible?
Also, I was wondering, instead of sending tocatta since there is a charge now, is it possible to change the phones internal preset ringers?
Thanks

I need to make this into an animated gif for my lg 8600 http://de.fishki.net/pics9/hentaitsop.swf , can anyone tell me how or maybe do it for me. Thanks in advance.

Posted by: benjybl

HAHAHAHA .....wow. Don't use your cell while driving

I don't know how to do it, but why not just google "flash [or swf] into gif" or something like that.

Posted by: onu8600

benjybl.. get over yourself.

when you say "how 'bout some games on this thing?" it is obviously a very broad question. How the hell am I sopposed to know what you mean.. i didnt even know it was possible to get anything other than telus games on (b/c of protection, etc). if you didnt take the time to write anything more than 6 words, dont expect everyone to know exactly what you mean just because your a computer junkie. Just for the record: you flammed me first by saying uhh thats what i meant. Furthermore, by saing that i was repeating what you "meant", you wer saying that you were in fact talking about telus games!! so i dont why all of a sudden your saying that you didnt mean telus games.
RELAX!

Posted by: benjybl

HA! I love how you're telling me to relax, and yet you continue to justify you're extremely wrong position, when all I'm trying to do is to defend myself from your unjustified flame attempts. I'm not all hyped up; no, I think it is you who needs to relax.

First of all, and for the billionth time, when I said "how bout some games on this thing?" it WAS implied that I was talking about hacking games on, AND NOT BUYING THEM FROM TELUS. Think about it...we're on HowardForums, a forum devoted to exploiting and getting the most out of ones phone, and in a thread about "LG 8600 HACKING." I would think it would be painfully obvious to any objective passerby, regardless of their "computer junkie"-ness (which I am far from, btw), that I was referring to getting my own games on the phone, and not buying them from Telus. Obviously you did not fall into that category.

If you had been on this board for as long as I have, you would know how things work around here. Having said that, I find I am one of the more genial posters on this board. When newbs like yourself come on and ask stupid questions [which I'm not insinuating you have done], things that can be easily answered with a simple search, something that annoys the hell out of other veteran posters (and even those who think they're veteran but are not), I will take the time to answer, and not simply flame them and tell them to search. I was once new here, too, and I kwow what it's like.

Not only do I lurk, but I also post and contribute back to the community. Not to toot my own horn (and please forgive me for my immodesty), but I was a huge player in hacking the Samsung A950. That's right, HACKING. Not instructing people on how to download stuff from Telus. Just because you did not know it was possible to get your own games on the phone, which it very well may not be [on this particular phone] considering how many problems there are with ringtones, does not give you the right to tell me what I did or did not mean at my time of posting. It is VERY possible to get non-Telus games on a phone, indeed I have done it on all my phones thus far (LG5450, RAZR, A950, etc), and as such I was asking those who had the phone, those who were trying so hard to get the ringtones working for everybody else, if they had made any headway on the JAVA gaming aspect of the phone.

When I originally said "how 'bout some games on this thing?" I was making a request to those people, hoping to see how far they had come in that particular field. Indeed, I was not talking to you in particular, you with twelve posts, you who has not made any groundbreaking posts to this thread and instead only flaming me or defending your own misintrepretations; no, I was asking the community as a whole. For the record, I would assume most people here knew what I was talking about/referring to when I submitted my original post. Again, I'm sorry if you did not, but that's your problem, not mine.

Lastly, well only last because I have no clue what your last sentence is trying to say, I was NOT flaming you when I said "uhh that's kind of what I meant.....lol" I actually fail to see how ANYBODY could contrue that as a 'flame,' especially when I have a "lol" at the end. Please. Stop getting so hyped up over nothing, and get over YOURself.

Posted by: smokedvw

Well im about to buy this phone but this thread doesnt seem to be your normal hacking phone thread more of a hacking each other thread.

BTW I got tons of games on my previous phone that were not telus specific. Anyways I hope some people figure out how to do it, I remeber just hacking around in BitPim to get them to work back in the day :P im hoping the bluetooth will be easier to upload/download images/ringtones/mp3s

Posted by: ooh-snapp

Okay, I've done everything so far (bitpim > filesystem > bew> 16452 > mds > put my own ringtone there > and then I "POWERCYCLED" (Rebooting the phone) by right clicking anywhere in the FileSystem area and cllicking "Reboot Phone" )

Then I checked my phone and the ringtone was there although that &*^%ing DRM message popped up ...

IS THERE A WAY AROUND THAT DAMN THING?

I appreciate all the help so far people have been posting (and further help) but please don't suggest that I do the tocatta method because it's the same problem I guess... there just needs to be a way around the DRM blockage that Telus (the devil) put there..

PLEASE & THANKS

I'm pretty much a noob but thanks to some people they kinda layed it out step-by-step and got this far.

Posted by: benjybl

Do you mean to say that the Toccata method produces the same result? Or that you don't want to try it because [you presume] it's the same? Sorry, it's just that your wording is kind of unclear in that last sentence.

I belive if you look on one of the earlier posts in this thread, a guy posted a reference to the LG 245 method of removing the DRM protection. It's pretty complicated, but as of now I think it's the only way (other than the Toccata method) that exists to get around the DRM protection. I'm not even sure if there is an easier thing to do, unless we find some way to hack the firmware like we can with the Motos (i.e. SEEM editing). It's too bad, really, because if we were able to hack this phone it really would be the perfect phone, IMHO, on Telus' current lineup.

Posted by: ooh-snapp

Sorry, I meant that I assumed the toccata method would produce the same result with the whole DRM issue.. but yeah I went through that reference didn't really get it... I think it's a matter of screwing around with BitPim but I could be wrong.

And yeah the phone isn't all that bad, just before this one I had the Nokia 6265i Slider which was also a great phone, totally different though

Posted by: benjybl

Well, actually, if you follow the Toccata method, I believe the DRM issue is non-existant. That is to say that the phone is "fooled" by the downloaded file being replaced by a file that is, well, different. Why not give it a try, and then see what happens?

As for the other workaround, it's a combination of screwing with BitPim and hex editing, which isn't hard per se, but just complicated to follow.

Well said.

I'm sorry you have to post posts like this. It's a sad day when you have to defend yourself from spinsters spinning words around to fit something they were never meant to be, or rationally can be.

There are those of us who truely do appreciate all of your contributions and any other PRODUCTIVE contribution from the community. I am one of those whom are thankful whilst still being a new-bee.

I hope my words of thanks help to compensate the negativity that was recently sent your way.

Take care and peace.

Thank you very much, TomCat39. I really appreciate your kind words. I really don't mind helping those in need when I can, as I too was once in your position. In fact, in many cases, I still am!

It's just when people like him post and basically insult me, it just drives me nuts!

Thanks again.

Nice essay. After all that talk about interpretations, you falsely assumed that i plan on buying games from telus... why would i post hereif that was the plan? I figured people probably already downloaded them, and shared them (just as you would get games that are not available from telus). And by the way, you shouldnt claim that people are way too worked up when your the one replying pretty much within the hour, and spending a decent amount of time writing up your rediculus multi-paragraph flames.
I'll let you get back to being a "big player"

Posted by: ooh-snapp

ive managed just to get one ringtone to work with BitPim regardless of the NON-DRM protection.. but again, that's only one ringtone.
I guess we still have yet to see a 'how-to' guide regarding hex editing and how to make our ringtones DRM safe or just eliminate that message in total lol..

On another note, I came across this site (www.mobile9.com) that was pretty interesting... I'm sure a lot of you will find it useful. If it;s been mentioned before I apologize I'm just trying to contribute, lol.

Posted by: onu8600

ooh-snapp.. if you want more ringtones, just download another tocatta, the bonus of that is that you can rename it to whatever you like. All it will cost you is 50cents (or whatever the download fee is).

The draw back is once again Telus gets to nickle and dime you to death for ringtones.

Afiak, the idea is for truely free ringtones from music we own (I know most people don't actually own the music they use but I'm being nice). AKA Fair use policy. Something Telus isn't supporting or is just plain greedy.

Your solution seems to play right into their hands on the greed/fair use concept.

Sure it's only 50 cents.... It's the principle of the matter for most of us on HOFO.

Posted by: wvenable

I performed the Toccata method on my wife's LG 8600 to get a custom ringtone. I also downloaded all the .dat files before and after to do some comparisons. Given that the Toccata method works, the protection is extremely simple. I've quickly browsed the .dat files and I believe that it should be really easy to allow unlimited custom ringtones without the need to do any more downloading.

I wish there was a code library for accessing the qualcomm file system -- then I could easily write an application to do it. For now, I'm thinking about delving into the Bitpim source code and seeing what I can do.

Posted by: benjybl

If you could do that, or at least find a way around the DRM protection....all of this forum (or at least those with the phone) would be forever indebted to you! As you have read, we have all been trying for a while to get it done, and if you can find a way to do that, I'm sure it would be much appreciated!

In regards to using the tocatta method for uploading custom ringtones, would it be possible to just make multiple copies of the tocatta.mid ringtone to prevent having to pay $.50 for downloading it over and over again to add different ringtones.

If its not possible than hows the progress coming on finding a different way to get past the DRM error. The LG 8600 is an awesome phone its just too bad that Telus had to make customizing it such a pain.

I downloaded the Toccata renamed some files, now even the original Toccata gives me the non-drm error. This sux...

There must be a way!

I was wondering if there was any way to enable bluetooth file sharing for a verison vx 8300

I just got my ringtones to work yesterday. Had to do some testing myself though. I didn't notice this thread was here but was reading on other threads.

once you got your bitpim to connect to the phone, you need to do the following:

upload the mp3 to the mds folder
delete oma_ringtones.dat file (no need to delete the other one)
restart your phone

once you have restarted your phone, you may notice that your ringtones will not work because of the DRM problem. Use bitpim and grab oma_ringtones.dat again and modify it in hex editor. I am currently using xvi32

On the left side you will see a bunch of blocks with hex codes and right side you will see what it looks like in notepad. From here you need to find the 5th last "00" from the characters after the the path of your ringtone

eg. brew/16../mds/ringtone.mp3................................[some jumbomumbo here that may look like 3f!@#]

so you would want to change the fifth last 00 before the jumbomumbo to a 01. Then save it and upload it to your phone. This time you do not need to restart the phone and once you go to your ringtone section, you will see that the song has a red lock on it.

I will try to get a screen shot of what I am talking about with the hex editor once I get home.

hope this will help

Hey guys,

New to the forums. A friend just picked up the 8600 and I've been trying to help him get mp3 ringtones without downloading from spark. I've followed all the previous instructions and i've gotten bitpim to detect the phone. I've also been able to get into the file systems and i see all the folders.

the issue i seem to be coming across is whenever i try to navigate to the MDS folder and look at its contents. it refreshes itself back to the root directory, and I'm unable to see any files within the folders.

any help/ideas would be great.

thanks in advance, guys!

I think I read somewhere that if you change your phone settings to vibrate, then when you take a picture, the shutter sound will be off?

My phones @ LG for repair so I can't try it

Posted by: truthlesshero

someone had mentioned on the first place, i believe, about the thread that i and a few people had started about the 245, since there wasn't any major thread about the DRM message back in october...

that being said, our method does seem to work, and the quote i've embedded here is a basic description of that method. It will work, telus seems to have done a good thing as far as putting the DRM protection very consistent on their phones. It is a simple "yes" "no" value in hex editing. Changing the value like this person describes to a 01 WILL do it, no need for download, no need for basically anything else. The only thing that you have to do is reboot your phone BEFORE you do the editing, and after you delete the data file.

why? because deleting the data file will force the phone to re-read all the data for the ringtones that are there. Once it has regenerated, go back into the phone and hex edit that file so that the 00 becomes 01. Now, I don't have a chocolate flip (desperately trying to get one...grrrr..) but some phones, you should reboot. I have no clue why, but on the 245, some people had to reboot, some didn't. I assume since someone got it to work on the flip, you should not have to reboot.

Just also wanted to say thanks for the appreciation in the earlier thread. And hope this helps a little with the people who do not want to pay the download fee, and just want a more direct way of getting their own ringtones, like God intended! Well, at least the mobile gods..hehe

I dont get it.. why do they bother forcing you to have that stupid picture sound?? At first I thought it might be a privacy/safety feature.. but regular cameras dont make those stupid sounds.. what the hell?

Any one have any ideas as to how to turn it off?

Hi,

I've briwsed many, many topics and i couldn't see one that explained how to get Bitpim to work with the 8600 using a USB cable. Has anyone got it to work or is BT still the only way to go for now ?

Thanks in advance

That sound is annoying, I agree.

Even in silent/meeting mode the sound is still there so it's implented to always be there. The only solution I can think of trying I don't even know if it's possible is locating those sounds via: BitPim and deleting them off the phone? LOL or replacing them with a blank sound, I dunno.

I think that program would work to make your ringtones.. as for putting them on, look at the posts earlier in this thread.

Thats not a bad idea.. replacing the sound with a blank sound.. hmm i'll have to look for it (the sound file)

Can anyone recommend me a USB/Data cable that will be compatible with this phone. I looked on the Best Buy website but found nothing. Thanks.

Yup, all American stuff. Your above post is also incorrect in terms of Telus. Telus doesn't charge you minutes (or deduct from monthly allowance) when browsing the web, so unfortunately a proxy won't work for us because Telus still does charge you. Sigh.

LG VX8600
noob doing this for the first time (first post) ....borrowed a friends usb cable he got for his chocolate from bell (I think bell calls it an 800)
Used bitpim for the first time
Cut the ringtones with audacity (make sure you get the lame file)
Used the XVI32 as a hex edit
It’s the gibberish at the end – count back 5 – change 00 to 01 – save – don’t have to reboot - you get a red lock – works for caller id/unknown/roaming/contact
Took me (once I downloaded and installed all the new programs) about 10 mins for 4 ringtones – including editing

If someone needs more info I can elaborate tomorrow – or just go by wenyen’s post – he gets all the credit

stupid question (And probably really easy to find); what dimensions do i use to make wallpapers for my Chocolate Flip?

Both the inside screen dimensions and outer.

I have been able to add ringtones following the methods described but I have a question about the volume that they play back as; they are loud!! How do I adjust the volume of them? I have tried using the phone and it just seems to ignore them, they still play back loud no matter what volume the phone is set at. Do I need to adjust the volume of the file before I upload it? I tried doing that in Audacity but again it does not seem to make a difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Few quick questions for the pro's :

I have a Canadian phone.
Not Verison.
Bitpim finds my phone as a LG-VX8100 on Port 8.
My phone is really a LG-CU8600? Apparently. Cause its Canadian and on Telus ?
Now.. here's my question.

I came across a firmwire upgrade for the VX8100 , which I'm guessing will unlock my phone giving me write access and unlocking my Bluetooth.

Can I use this update on my phone? Or is there a particular Canadian unlock .bin or and DLL I can use. I don't want o mess my phone up its brand new.

Even after I go into my phone on BitPim dir/brew/16452/mds as soon as I try to send it to my phone the application says my file/directory has been blocked by the phone provider.

Please help.

Godspeed

That will almost certainly brick your phone. I would not recommend putting Verizon firmware on a Telus phone unless you really have some experience with this - or a spare phone and a friendly service rep to fix it when it won't work.

Also, for better filesystem access, the Bitpim model that most closely matches the Chocolate flip is the VX8600, not the LG8100.

Yep! Had an issue where i modified the wrong number and my phone kept rebooting when i hit ringtones, but i reloaded the file, it recreated it and now i have a lovely 34 second custom ringtone! And i did it with Bluetooth too! Used the autodetect function (which failed but gave me access to my file system tab). Ill add some more ringtones later but this was so awesome that i got it working. Ive been trying since yesterday evening and now i have a working custom ringtone! w00t!

Posted by: Mr_Brett_117

Now a new question (search function yielded no results, so ill ask here):
How do you customize the UI? The One that comes with the CX8600 (the Canadian ones from Telus) SUCKS! It's so bland! I dont mind the colour scheme, but there's not flash, and it's not very pretty.

So can anyone link me to, or tell me how to customize the UI? Thanks!

Hi All,

What I'm not able to figure out is that in the file oma_ringtone.dat which 00 pair I should change. it says the fifth last 00, does that mean I count all the 00 pairs from the end and change the fifth or should I count 5 pairs and change the fifth which happens to be a 00.

to give a clearer picture let me try this, in my case, when i open the file oma_ringtone.dat in a hex editor, and if I look at the last three lines I see:

line EE: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
line FF: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 E5 C5 D7 33 00 00 00 00
line 110: 9F CA 05 00

so which pair of 00 should I change?

Thanks a lot, but I did find it a bit confusing!

That's the one i changed. I hope it works for you!

To clarify

You take your OMA ringtones from this folder

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...pg?t=1185932044

After you grab it get a HEX editor like XVI312

Now, when you got your ringtones all loaded up and ready to edit in your OMA_ringtone.dat

You count 5 spaces back from the gibberish that is your song from the end.

As shown

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...pg?t=1185932044

Notice where i circiled as well as the "r's" shown. You just change the bit to 01. Thats it

It worked like a charm,

Thanks a lot....now I have to see if it is the same procedure when I have more than one song.

One more thing, why the ringtone pitch is very high, even though the volume of the ringer is on 2 or 3...but it comes out very loud...how can we get around that?

Any idea on how to install the games? is it similar to the LG 245?

Hey I got me a LG86000 Choc Flip. I like the phone, I don't like that fact you can't set customs rings for txtmsg's, which I think is really dumb. This is the first time I've seen that on a phone. Trust me I've had a lot of phones. Another thing I don't like when you add a contact I wish you could make a number secret so you have to enter in the code to see or edit the contact. I guess these couple things along with the cripples telus has put on the phones I give it a 7.5/10.

Now if we can figure out the games, apps, UI and so on, wow what a phone this would be then!

yeah yeah that's all I got for now, I see people have moved on from this thread, but I will be keepin' on checking for updates... so l8r folks!! :-)

In Bitpim, manually set the phone to VX8600. This won't fix the error you're encountering since Bitpim doesn't yet fully support Telus phones, but it will be slightly more compatible.

To add ringtones, you'll need to use the 'Filesystem' feature of Bitpim, and a hex editor to manually edit some files. Read some of the Chocolate ringtone threads for more info.

you know what the worst part is....TELUS (a.k.a worst service provider ever) does not even give u a selection fo more than 20 ringtones to download from and if you want any that are 2+ months old than you are out of luck.

All you have to do is hex edit your oma_ringtone.dat file.

There is a simple formula to make the proper changes so that all your ringtones are available.

My GF got the Flip and I've already got an old phone ringer and the classic boomroom.wav ringtones on her phone plus kept her telus bought ringtone all available.

It's the games for both the 8600/8500 that we haven't cracked yet well, without just replacing already existing apps/games.

It's Java/J2ME. the format of the games isn't the issue, it's the ContentInfo file and the ExecutionInfo file in the db folder that's the issue. If we can't get the info into those two files correctly, it either doesn't show in your list of games/apps or it doesn't run.

Yeah the first thread I had read awhile back, didn't catch the update of redownloading the app/game to create a new entry. Had lost the thread. Got it bookmarked now.

The second thread still isn't complete. ExecutionInfo is still empty of reverse engineering (needed for the app running as you well know). It seems the small tidbits that you aren't sure of in ContentInfo don't inhibit the use of it.

I must say, you have made the most progress with those files out of everyone. In a very short time you far surpassed anything I could do and so I had been waiting to see the outcome of your efforts. Especially since I was mostly shooting in the dark. I mean, I understood them to be databases.... But to decipher it... Lack of experience on this end.

Peace.

Yeah, I did end up deciphering the ExecutionInfo as well as created a couple Linux apps to rehash the ContentInfo as well as add new entries to both. However, after realizing that even updating both files didn't achieve any useful results - and stumbling across the 50-cent method - I never bothered updating that thread with executioninfo info.

I'll compile a better, more up-to-date document of what I've learned so others can take a go at it. But really, what we need is for someone to diff a before & after app download of the phone's filesystem, noting any changes outside /brew/ams and diff'ing
the hex dumps of any other files modified in order to determine where the 3rd index is located. I'll probably get around to it eventually, but lately I've just been too busy.

I'm guessing from what you said here... Diff'ing the whole file tree, including the nvm folder? I can diff stuff's and report back. I just need to know what areas need diff;ing or if it's the whole phone system including the locked nvm folder.

Hi Guys,

Is it possible to change the video resolution from 176x144 to something larger like 320x240?

Wasn't able to figure that out so far!

Cheers,

The 8600 has a set resolution which is less than the 8500 @ 320x240.

Sorry, the LCD just isn't capable of higher.

I've been having major troubles getting a stable serial connection out of my bluetooth dongle to my LG 8600... I'm using a TrendNet TBW-101UB usb bluetooth dongle and the latest (5.something) WidComm stack.. Anyone have any suggestions? The Serial port appears to connect, then it disconnects after like 40 seconds in the 'My Bluetooth Places' window... The phone has never been detected in BitPim at all, even though I know I've selected the right com-port to search...
I've heard of similar problems before, could anyone offer some advice/help? (besides getting a USB cable??) It'd be greatly appreciated, thanks,

Quick question, would the cable from the chocolate slider (8500 i think) work on the 8600?

It does. I have the cable for the 8500 for my phone and have used it without issue on my GF's 8600.

THX, ill see if i can borrow it then from my friend

ARGH.
When I attempt to connect it with Bluetooth, the only service available is "object push". I can't get the serial port service to work at all!!!!

What's going on!?

I've been trying to figure out if there was a way to change the ringers for when a message is received (I see others have inquired about this as well) and was wondering if the following might work. If you were able to locate the existing message ringtones in the filesystem using Bitpim, would it not be possible to create your own ringtone, rename it the same as the original (Say, for instance, Loud Beeps) and replace it? I feel like there would be other steps necessary to make this work, but is this a possible solution to this issue, or am I completely off base?

Last I heard the UI and the Alert Sounds are embedded in the firmware.

So unless youf igure out how to download the firmware from the EEPROM and then reverse engineer it, then build a flash program and a new flash file for it........ Yer SOL. I think that gives you the idea. :-|

dude, if it's a .dat file, just delete it off of your phone and reboot. it will regenerate itself upon startup! there is still hope!

haha if that doesn't help, let me know, and i'll hook a brutha up

instead of trying to detect the phone, just set it as the verizon VX8600 and select the proper com port and MANUALLY type it into bitpim (COM3, COM4, COM7, whichever it is).

Mind you, since the telus version of the phone is not (yet?) supported in bitpim, you can only manipulate the filesystem via the filesystem tab (which appears by going to VIEW, then selecting VIEW FILESYSTEM).

you can navigate the filesystem this way, and make changes to ringtones/wallpapers/whatever you wanted to do. just make sure you read up on it enough before you hop in, or you may render your phone a big pile of unusefullness! (gotta get some use out of my new word=P )

if you still need help, PM me, but make sure you try what i've told you here first. if i need to repeat myself, wayne brady will definately have to choke a *****. =P

i just wanted to know if putting .mp3 ringtones on this phone is just like the Lg 8100 I use bitpim 0.8.14 if not i would like some 1 who is nice enough to point me to right posts here cause there are alot of posts ive been reading online for days now some ppl say its like the 8100 other ppl say new version of bitpim works ect... me im using the cable which i orderd from telus for 49.99 like a dummy cause i found cheaper cables for this phone on e-bay but again some ppl were complaining that the cable wasn't working so its a good thing i got the telus cable for 8600 also does any 1 know if the drivers found on humpa's website work with telus phone.

PLEASE HELP ME

Posted by: docderd

thanks chrispipe for the reply. i've tried rebooting my phone numerous times and the file won't regenerate itself.??? the first time i uploaded a ringtone with pit pim i deleted the oma-ringtone.dat and oma-ringtonesize.dat file and powercycled the phone and voila, ringtone added and i was able to set it as a ringer for a contact. next time i uploaded a ringtone deleted the files and rebooted i now get the "cant set non-drm protected media as ringtone" message. even when i try to use a ringtone that i downloaded from the telus site. the only thing i can think of is that i don't have an aod.dat file in my dload folder anymore (although i never check to see if it was there before i started messing about)
if you could link me that file via email i'd sure appreciate it!!

much thanks.

kinghuff - just go back and read the first page of this thread and you will find the info you need to get custom ringtones onto your phone. Big word of Caution tho. Read EVERYTHING, and BACKUP your phone files before you delete stuff. i learned the hard way.

i'm using bitpim and a datacable i bought off of ebay. no problems getting the phone recognized by bitpim. it detects automatically for me.
best of luck!

Well, just an update on my situation...

Having no luck with the cheap bluetooth dongle I picked up from Futureshop I opted to go to ebay and get myself a USB cable (Bought it at a $1.99 'Buy It Now' price, (instead of waiting for all that auction crap to go thru) and paid 5 bucks to ship to Canada. Relatively painless process. Getting it here was another story.. Took 2 1/2 weeks to get here (not sure what/where the holdup was, assuming it was customs, shipping to a postal box probably didn't help).. Lets just say I'm not a patient person, and was checking for it every day, lol...

Anyways, it arrived today, works fine, and the hex-edit trick for re-rights-protecting ringtones works great (although it's a bit of a pain in the butt, but better than the alternative $4.00 crappy downloads)

Hallelujah! Finally, free ringtones! Now I've got to find that list I wrote up a month ago of decent song-ideas for ringtones...

Das

PS: Audacity works ok, but with all that converting going on there's got to be some quality loss, no? Anyone know of a decent, freeware, native .mp3 file editor (that preserves quality?) Cheers,

KingHuff,

Yup, the drivers form humpa's website work great. I'm not sure how similar it is to the 8100 (I don't have that phone), but this thread has all you need to do it. I'd suggest you get the latest version of BitPim though.. It's free and includes support for the 8600 (use the verizon 8600 option). I'm using BitPim version 1.0.1 ... Pretty sure it's the latest...

Hey, no worries about the cable if it still fits the 8600 phone. My cheap one works fine now but who knows for how long. At least you've got one & you know its going to work (& if it doesn't, you can take 'er back to Telus)

Has any 1 figured out how to make DRM'd MP3's or do we continue with the hex edit method

Has everyone got this custom ringtone upload/hexedit thing down? or are there people out there that are still a little unclear? i've created what i think is a simplified tutorial for getting ringtones onto your LG 8600 (i think it is slightly different than the method for the 8500) phone and using the hex edit method to get around the DRM protection. If people are interested let me know, i will put it up.

Custom Ringtone on you LG 8600

I spend numerous hours searching HoFo and reading through many, many threads in hopes of finding a nice, simple answer to my question: “Can I get custom ringtones on my LG 8600?? “ Well, the answer is YES!
And the best part is that it is cheap and relatively easy.
Hopefully the following guide will be easy to follow and allow others to share the wealth that is custom ringtones!

I make no claims that I figured this out on my own. I never would have made it without the information available on this site, and many thanks to ChrisPipe who guided me through the final steps of this process.

What you need:
Your LG 8600 phone
Datacable (I bought one from ebay. Cost was about $10 shipped) OR
Bluetooth connection (I can’t verify that this works, but from my reading I see many success stories)
The latest Version of BitPim
A hexediting Program (just Google it, there are many. I used this one http://www.hhdsoftware.com/Family/hex-editor.html)

What to do:
1. Assuming that the appropriate drivers are installed on your computer and your mode of connection is working properly, Connect your phone to your Computer.
2. Open up BitPim (BitPim detects my phone automatically; you may have to play with settings. Look at bitpim tutorials for help in this aspect)
3. In the File Structure section of bitpim expand the File Tree.
4. Navigate to /brew/16452/mds – This is where your RINGTONES are stored

5. Right click in the right widow pane and click ‘New File’. Add your ringtones
6. Navigate to the /dload/ folder and locate file oma_ringtone.dat
BACK THIS FILE UP (just in case…) (to backup file, right click on file and choose ‘Save’ Save to your computer in your desired location.

7. Delete the file oma_ringtone.dat
8. Reboot your phone by turning it off and then on again, or right clicking in the file structure window in bitpim and selecting reboot phone.
Your phone will have recreated the /dload/oma_ringtone.dat file and it will now include entries for your custom ringtones. These files are now on your phone and accessible to play, HOWEVER, there are a couple more steps before you can assign them as ringtones. At this point in time if you try to assign them as ringtones you will be met by the very unpleasant ‘Non-DRM protected files cannot be set as ringtones’
9. Save the new version of oma_ringtone.dat to your computer. Make sure you don’t overwrite your backup copy.

To HEX EDIT your file:
10. Open up your favourite Hex Editing Program.
11. Open up the NEW version of oma_ringtone.dat
12. Each ringtone structure is basically the same. A string of characters at the beginning that define the song name, followed by a long string of ‘00’s, then another string of characters that supply other information about the file.
The group of ‘00’ that you want to change is the 5th last ‘00’ before the end string of random looking characters. All you have to do is change it from ‘00’ to ‘01’. (In the picture I have already changed the entry to ‘01’)

13. Do that for each ringtone entry then save the file. Upload this edited oma_ringtone.dat file to you phone (I always delete the oma_ringtone.dat file that is on the phone, then upload the edited one)
14. Voila, your ringtones should now work as intended. No need to reboot your phone. When you go into your phone and look at your custom ringtones there should be a lock icon beside them. This means SUCCESS!. ENJOY.

Where do you get BitPIm. Sorry for the nob question lol. I wanna learn how to hax lol.

thanks, but i'm no genius. i just spend a lot of time on here reading about what other people have figured out. I just tried to package the info in a nice tidy box for others like myself, those with no hacking skills, but can read and follow directions. especially directions with pictures.

go to the bitpim website for the latest version

good luck.

Before I posted with Bitpim you could replace the closing animations with verizon ones found on the net. Now using QPST it is possible to replace the opening animations with Verizon ones also. Now to try the custom bit2 maker to see if these well work.

Posted by: pooneyboy

awesome instructions docderd, but do you have to do this process everytime you put new ringtones on the phone and for each one?

Posted by: docderd

unfortunately, yes, you do.
it really doesn't take that long thankfully, however the biggest pain about it is that if you have assigned a unique ringtone to individual contacts, they will all be messed up if you add more ringtones later. I don't know exactly what the correlation is to what order they are rearranged by, but i have a feeling it has to do with the alphanumeric listing of the ringtone in the ringtone list.
i.e.
if the ringtone structure used to be

ayotechnology.mp3
birds.mp3
dogtown.mp3

and you add another ringtone called capture.mp3

then the new order 'might' be

ayotechnology.mp3
birds.mp3
capture.mp3
dogtown.mp3

which would possibly shift the order so any contact assigned ringtone 'dogtown.mp3' would now be assigned the ringtone 'capture.mp3'

THIS MAY NOT BE TRUE, but as of now that is my hypothesis.

so, yes. you have to upload ringtones, regenerate your oma_ringtone.dat file, and you have to hex edit every ringtone entry and then reload that to your phone. I am going to play around with the song names and see if we can prevent messing up the ringtone/contact assignment with every change. Perhaps by naming files 001ringtonename.mp3, 002ringtonename.mp3 and so on will prevent this...

Perhaps if someone was able to figure out how to create ringtones with DRM protection already build in, then we could bypass all these steps... any takers???

Where might I find such custom bit2 maker? I've searched google.ca and as many resources as I can think of on this interweb, however I've come up with nothing thus far. Any help?

Have you searched the forums? A beta was released and for the full version the guy wants some money. I have not tried it yet so not sure if it works or not.

Great thread, thanks for that clear tutorial docderd!

From the sound of it, no one has been able to use the good ol' SD to plug in their own ringtones. A shame really.

I was at Pacific Mall here in Toronto and I'm sure I could've gotten that USB cable then, but I didn't think I'd need it. And no Bluetooth dongle for me.

Posted by: hackin_maniac

first thing, I don't know if I did somthing new, but since I got this phone this is my first time doing anything with hex and hackin' and stuff.... but I want to know if I actually accomplished somthing

I downloaded the telus navigator, installed it
then I got a tetris game off the net and I over wrote the 14.jar and 14.jad files in my 14 folder, so the tetris game then ran when I went to run Telus navigator.
then I started poking around trying to figure out how I could rename telus navigator to Tetris, and move it over too the games list, instead of gps servcies....

and by editing the contentinfo file, and the executioninfo files I moved it, and renamed it. and it works,
so now I goto Games in my phone and Tetris is listed and it works

I'm going to see if I can do the same with adding a whole new game without downloading anything from telus

Did I do somthing new tho??? cause I'm happy If I did... at least now I can download the free apps and replace them with games and put them in the games listing section...

Posted by: hackin_maniac

and it no longer says Telus Navigator under the GPS services either

Posted by: docderd

don't know if anyone has done what you've done, but regardless, your labours and contribution are appreciated. i figure that anytime you can get something on your phone for free, which you would normally have to pay Telus to download you've done something worthwhile. if you have more success with your method feel free to share the step by step instructions for the benefit of others.

agreed with docderd! fight the system! I recently got the 8600 myself, and beyond applying the ringtone hack, I do not have belief in my own snooping around ability.

I do have a question about using bitpim though. I connect my phone to my pc with bluetooth, no drivers installed whatsoever, just using the Serial COM ports. Bitpim does not detect my phone, so I manually set it to Vx8600. On the filesystem, is transfer rates supposed to be really slow, like getting ~8kb/s?

Yes it's super slow, it's using standard SERIAL port protocals not Universal Serial Bus protocals.

The old serial port was not very fast thus your max speeds is super slow.

This what I did, FIRST MAKE A BACKUP OF FILES BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING

I downloaded and installed the "Telus Navigator" to my phone, which was installed to the "GPS Services", under "Tools & Apps"

I got the "contentinfo" file, and the "executioninfo" file opened them up in xvi32 and started looking for relations in the text.

The Telus Navigator was 14.jar and 14.jad in my phone, could be different on yours.

if you look at the "folderinfo" file that is in the same dir as these 2 files, you will see all that is in there is a letter "Y" with 2 little dots on top of it, and you will a black block character with a peroid in the middle.

-------This is my origional "contentinfo" file text for telus navigator

: ; = ˙˙“ 2 3 ˙ TELUS navigator p 4" ˙ application/java-archive 5ņä 5Z 6 ˙ GPS Services 7ĢÄ 8 ˙ fs:/ams/14/14.jar 9 : ; = • 2 3 ˙ TELUS navigator ( 4" ˙ application/java-archive rad( 5Z 6 ˙ GPS Services 7'1 8 ˙ fs:/ams/14/14.jar Z 4 9

Notice in front of telus navigator it starts with "2 3 ˙" and throughout the file it counts up and the funny "y" starts a new piece of info.
What I think is these 2 charcters are what define the starting point, with the "y" (˙) and then it counts up 2 sets of 2 - 9 directing what the file names are, and where they go. For example, the contentinfo is the information about the files in the phone, and the executioninfo tells where it should be listed in the phone.

-------This is my origional "executioninfo" file text for telus navigator

˙ midlet:com.nim.app.NavigatorMidlet A B ˙ default € C ˙ midlet:TELUS navigator [ > € ? @ ˙

There is the "y" again, but this time it is counting up with letters A,B,C

So then, I got my new game which is Tetris, and I took the jar and jad files I renamed them too 14.jar 14.jad and put the in place of the telus navigator ones.
.
So now, I got to telus navigater and it runs tetris.

I backed up my files and started making some changes to the lines of text. Trying to keep everything that was already there I just changed words.

************here is my new "contectinfo" for where the navigator used to be

: ; = ˙˙“ 2 3 ˙ Tetris p 4" ˙ application/java-archive 5ņä 5Z 6 ˙ Games 7ĢÄ 8 ˙ fs:/ams/14/14.jar 9 : ; = • 2 3 ˙ Tetris ( 4" ˙ application/java-archive 5 ( 5Z 6 ˙ Games 7'1 8 ˙ fs:/ams/14/14.jar Z 4 9 : ; =

************Here is my new "executioninfo" for where the navigator used to be

@& ˙ midlet:com.magmic.tetris.Tetris A B ˙ default € C ˙ midlet:Tetris r [ > € ? @ ˙

All this looks nuts, but all I did was looked at other entrys for games I had bought from telus, and changed some letters to like like them in these files, and it moved the listing from one location to the games location, and they worked fine, as well as the games I bought from telus all worked. The telus navigator also got renamed to Tetris. I can say that the contentinfo file is what makes the name of the game say what you want, cause I changed a couple of letters in that file from lowercase to UPPERCASE without touching the executioninfo file and the names in my phone became uppercase.

But when I tried to add on a new game to the bottom of the files, they wouldn't work, none of em would, so I dont know how to do that yet, this is my first time doing anything with hex. I cannot stress enough how you should backup your files first.

I'm going to keep working on it, that folerinfo file, has a black block thing at the end of it, and both these files also have this block thing, which I think means to close the file, and the funny "y' is where it begines reading for an entry... confusing but, if I get anywhere I will let everyone know, I'm going to try to write both files from scratch.

u can turn on speakerphone by holding the back (<--) button in or out of conversation.

i just figured it out

Posted by: illumintai

I'm not sure if this is related to LG8600 "hacking" but for the java music application is it possible to:

1) overlay the time to the outer display somehow? I use my phone as a watch and i hate having to exit the music player just to see the time
2) have an equalizer to turn up the bass, because it sounds pretty lacking (by default) on my headset

Posted by: IllBashU

is there anyway to uncripple the bluetooth, like the 60 sec viability time thing?

Posted by: benjybl

The bluetooth on the 8600 isn't crippled at all. The 60sec visiblity thing is there for two reasons:

1) it saves battery power. BT is a huge drain on your battery, so by only being visible for 60 seconds (to allow for device discovery) makes it so that your battery isn't needlessly wasted.

2) security purposes. When you are discoverable, anybody can find you. Half the time people don't even know they're in discoverable mode, and so the time period makes it safer so unwanted people can't connect. (and before anybody says you must pair (read: have a mutual agreement to connect) it is possible to hack this and forcibly connect).

Posted by: illumintai

Yes, the 60 second thing isn't a bad idea.

But I really wish it had human interface device enabled, that would've been really cool. I don't see why they would need to cripple this anyways. It doesn't hurt their business like crippling ringtones

Posted by: tobeychris

I've been trying for hours to follow the method above for getting a game.
I was able to get my game (Super Mario) to work by editing the ExecutionInfo file to have the correct path to the game's .class file, but I cannot change the name or folder. I've even tried just capitalizing a single letter and that too would make the application disappear from the menu.

Has anyone else done this successfully? Or see an error?

Also, here is a site with a lot of games http://www.mobilerated.com/

Simple method with the Telus LG 8600

1. Buy a SD micro memory card.
2. Insert the small card (removable from the main card) into the phone.
3. Format the memory card via the option on the phone.
4. Remove card from phone. Replace the small card into the larger sd card and insert in a 20.00 card reader you can get from the source (Usb to pc)
5. Copy your files from your pc to your phone.
6. Replace the small card into your phone and it should be in the albums area (All your mp3's)

Worked on mine (Telus)

Menu 0 - 000000 don't work on telus. the following codes do work. You need to get your MSL code in order to get access to the settings, which is not much of anything in terms of settings. You can get your MSL code from bitpm, its in one of the hex files, just do a seach in the groups. I can tell you it's in the NVM folder.

the codes that work are

##DATA
##BROWSER
##TELUS
##TEST
##DEBUG

I wouldn't reccommend messing with any of the settings.

Later,
Hope I was of some help.

Does anyone know how to change the tone for Text Messages?

So far it can't be done... as above it's believed to be in the firmware so we can't touch it.

The easiest solution is to buy the LG 8550 aka Spin. ;p

Regrettably, all the LG phones prior to this wouldn't allow the alerts to be changed outside of the preloaded ones.

The Spin however allows full customization of it's sound. And comes with a USB cable to boot so I've read.

I am sooooo getting this phone.
