Blackberry Pearl with Unicel service / with related Hotmail question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I live up in northern vermont. We have a GSM carrier called Unicel. Great service.

I want to get a Blackberry Pearl. Can I just buy one unlocked on ebay and slap my SIM Card in the back and run it? Obviously I would have to pay for the 'data service' through Unicel, but at this point would it just work?

Also, if it does just 'work', can I use my regular Hotmail email account on the phone WITHOUT using a browser? Anotherwords, I just want the email to come into the phone's inbox, seamlessely. I have had hotmail for years so I don't need to hear about the 'hotmail plus' issues people spoke about in other threads.

Any and all advice would really be helpful.

Thanks.

You need to have a separate blackberry internet service(BIS) in order to access data on your blackberry. We have Unicel up here in Maine and I know they don't offer it. They only have a "mail to go" data service, which seems to be limited.

If you were able to get it, BIS allows you to push your email to your blackberry with any generic email service like hotmail, google mail, yahoo mail, etc.

Thanks for replying.

So you've got Unicel.. what's the best option for getting email on a phone with the service we have?

Run the Nokia E62 (offered by Unicel) or buy something else on ebay (blackberry, samsung, etc) and just use a web browser to check email?

if you have suggestions, it would really be helpful.

Thanks!

I have USCC, but we have unicel up in our area. Unicel only has a mail data plan, with no other data access that I can speak of. You won't be able to use a blackberry on their network because you won't be able to purchase it through unicel. There may be some way to use a non-blackberry, non-unicel phone for other data on their network but someone else would have to answer that question. It would probably take some tweaking of your phone as well as breaking your legal agreement with Unicel. Good luck.
