My 812SH review

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: JP Jones

Ok, so I got the 812SH about a week ago.

Here are my thoughts:

Likes> (in no particular order)

*20 colors, take your pick.

*osaifu keitai with mobile SUICA/ PASMO rocks. there are many other apps you can set up for it too, like your video shop card, your point card at the electronic retailer, airline cards and boarding passes. buy drinks etc. at the station using it rather than change, from the vending machines, or the kiosk.

*MUCH thinner than my 903SH (collecting dust in the corner of my desk)

*has a sub-display on the outside, not much of one, but more than 903SH

*the actual keys are much more pleasant to use than the 903SH. bigger, easier to push just the key you want, not the one next to it too.

*menus seem better, more logically arranged. easier to find function you are looking for.

Dislikes> (in no particular order)

* good luck finding the color you want. it took me a week, several visits to the 2 Softbank shops near my house and a phone call to their English support line.

* the LED for indicating you have a message, or incoming call, etc, is tiny. Prolly about 0.7mm, like a bit larger than the lead for a mechanical pencil. The 903SH has a spotlight by comparison.

* maybe its just me, but it gets a bit slippery/ greasy when using it for a bit. requires cleaning with a bit of soap/spray. I hate to think of how it will be in the summer when I am sweating my balls off here.

Wow 20 colours... that's so cool =) Got any pics of the one you finally found?

The osaifu keitai with SUICA / PASMO thing sounds amazing.. it's like a phone with a built-in Octopus card from HK

Here's a link to the 812SH:

I like Silver the best =)

If you go to the website, you'll see the phone is made in 20 colour variations.

never liked the design of the 812sh, im digging the 705p

Posted by: digitalshoujo

My friend who just moved back to Japan actually bought this phone! She got the pearl pink version - I think she might have chosen it mostly for the color It does look nice, though, and if I were living in Japan I might have chosen it too - as JP Jones said, the osaifu keitai (essentially, the wallet-like functions) function is very convenient and the color choices can't be beat!
The reason I chose the 903sh, however, is because there are limited options and useability in the US for such phones, and I like the style of it (plus I hate when phones get too small). The 812sh is a fine choice, but on this forum where people are obsessed with technical specs (SVGA, VGA, megapixels on the camera, mp3 functions, etc) it seems low-end. If you could import it, it would lose most of its usefulness since the US doesn't have anything SUiCA like

Posted by: ace587

coffee black 705p is nice

Posted by: KayJai

Yes, the osaifu keitai / felicia / etc. is nice, but the thing is,... almost 90% of the new phones since the 904SH HAVE IT! So to say you are picking the 812SH for that feature is not a big sell for me. Take the 811SH http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/product/3g/811sh/index.html
MUCH more superior phone,.. and yeah,... it also has felica. And guess what,... comes in 8 colors!

I dunno, the 812SH just wouldn't even be on my radar to get a new phone here in Japan,... when there's so many more phones with much more to offer.
But I tell ya what,... this just shows you that Softbank's Advertising DOES work, offering the 20 different colors as it's highpoint for the 812SH.

But if he's happy with it,... then that's kewl!

Posted by: JP Jones

How is the 811SH a "MUCH superior" phone?

Its thicker, and has the same features as the 812SH, aside from being VGA not QVGA.
The buttons feel better on the 812SH. And the rounded design is easier to get in and out of your pockets.

and that's why more pics need to be taken...so we can believe that we're there with you lol

The 811 may be thicker, but in my opinion it's a prettier phone lol

Though the mirror face/display on the 812 is pretty cool

Posted by: KayJai

Hey, what ever makes you happy,... I'm not dissing your choice in phone,... it's YOUR choice, not mine,.... you live with the phone,... not me.

And guys,... why you need pix???
Seriously,... Both Al and JP gave you webpages to see what it looks like....

Those who are in or will be in Japan might like to know your favorites and why.

Do any of your choices include "global roaming" ?

Posted by: JP Jones

almost all do, I think that is what 3G means, but I'm not sure.

Posted by: ace587

lucky, i want to have a useable 904sh

Posted by: AL9999

The way Softbank works these days, they don't put global roaming on the 91x/90x series phones anymore. 81x, 80x, 70x series phones all seem to get global roaming though.

Well, I am currently thinking of either the 910SH,... which you all know the specs on,.. hehe.

But I am now really leaning more for the 911T!
http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/product/3g/911t/index.html
Some things I like:
-It's a slider, which I wanted since I got my 903SH,... flip is ok, but I MUCH rather have a slider
-3.2MB Cam
-Bluetooth capable with A2DP Support
-Felica, which most phones have these days, but this one does have it.
-T9! God I miss predictive text, this one has it,... I played with it in the store for about 30mins,... pretty good input
-Good music player
-1GB INTERNAL memory! Won't be needing a microSD for a little while.
-Did I mention it was a slider! Very sexy

Some things I don't like:
-No global roaming, WCDMA ONLY! But I have the 903SH for that when I go back to Canada for visits.
-3.2MB camera, but no optical zoom. I think I MIGHT be able to live with it, kinda used to it on the 903,.. but we'll see.
-Buttons are a bit small,... I have a big thumb But I have nails

But yeah, I'm looking into it,.. will probably be my next phone, might be an early Bday present to myself

-It also has One Seg, but that's not a seller for me,.. it's bonus,... but not on my list of MUST HAVES, rather have 2-3times Optical Zoom.

good to see af back on the toshiba phones

Posted by: ace587

cut youre nails dude hahahaha

Posted by: AL9999

Don't you like how all the dummy phones aren't attached to the shelves with cords? I loved this in Japan, you could play with them without a stupid cord tugging on you...

3G is just a new network type that enables faster internet access (than PDC or GSM) and video calling. In Softbank's marketing sense global roaming means the addition of GSM to the phone and has nothing to do with 3G.

Anyway yeah, the 911T is THE ultimate Softbank phone right now. I would seriously consider it over the 910SH...

Then again, there's a 912SH/913SH combo coming up for the summer pay bonus period, they could be good...

It really depends on your plan.

But, I think I got it for like Y30,000 yen, spread out over 2 years in the payment plan.

Posted by: cherryontop

Ok thanks.
I know softbank has a new plan called "white plan" thats about 980yen a month for a six month plan so I'm going to do that.
How does that whole using a cell phone as a bank card work (that the 812sh has).
Do you charge it up with money on the internet?

Posted by: JP Jones

no, at konbinis.
