OK so I just got Verizon, I picked up the Samsung SCH-u740 along with the 500 txts/in txting for $10 plan.

Everything was fine until... I sent my friend on Cingular a txt of about 200 chars and she missed the entire end of the txt? I'm used to them being split into two txts not just dropping the end of the message!
Then Verizon send me a txt "informing" me that only Verizon subscribers can receive txts over 160 chars, or ANY MEDIA txt!?!?!

What am I paying for? With T-mobile I had 500 txts of anything to anyone regardless of provider! For $3 per month! And why would i buy an obviously txt msg oriented phone like the 740 if Verizons service is so handicapped??

Someone please tell me im wrong about this, I love the Verizon reception but WILL cancel my plan if this is the case.

Another awesome reason to cancel your service. There's a counter when you're sending. Just split it into two text messages then.

I thought the split was automatic when sending to non-VZW phones, while for VZW phones EMS (instead of SMS) would be used for TXT messages over 160 characters.

Comrade, other VZW users have told me they receive the same message from Verizon after sending either a long text to a non VZW phone or a pix/flix message : That the offending long message has been truncated and the multimedia have been stripped out.

I find it personally irritating that the etiquette followed by all of the other providers (some much farther down on the customer service level) is ignore by Verizon.

I have a feeling that might relate to TXT (SMS/EMS) messages that might have some images or sounds (which can be done), and not to PIX/FLIX (MMS) messages, which are different.

Do not pass go, do not go one day longer on your trial period, move on to, or back to a carrier which one doesn't need to look at a counter when composing and sending a SMS text message. Standards are a great thing, too bad most are ignored by vzw.

Your friend got 160 chars? That means about 40 chars got caught up in vzw walled garden. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20060913/150437.shtml

I'm sorry like I said I'm new to VZW could you please tell me the difference between SMS/EMS (these I know are just regular or long txts) and a PIX/FLIX? I really would like to find out if I can get around this because I don't want to lose the VZW reception in my area...

OK well I was able to send a PIC message to a friend of mine on TMO so I guess I can stop completely freaking out over this. It will be a pain to have to pay attention to the amount of chars im sending (I admit I have a serious text messaging issue to deal with) but I'll just have to cope because VZW is the only provider where I can actually receive a call inside my house.

I want to thank everyone here who took the time to help me out!
