Can I run desktop redirector w/o Exchange?

Can I run desktop redirector with a Blackberry from T-Mobile despite the fact that I am NOT on an exchange server?

I do use Outlook, but it pulls from our corporate IMAP server.

T-Mo's site is vague on the subject.

Thank you in advance,
Lewis

i guess my first question is

why on earth would you want to?
redirector requires your pc be on w/ redirector running
does not handle PIM data
does not support attachments
the only advantage of it, is that it is fast

BIS would make much more since

if its speed your looking for, see if your company can turn a forwarding rule on your imap server. then create a hosted carrier.blackberry.net address and forward to it. this way works well

but to answer your question
by design redirector was made to with exchange
ive kinda seen it work with POP/IMAP but usually will get flooded with network etp messages

the real point is that it was not designed to be used this way
and i have yet to run in to an instance where i could find any advantage to using it

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. Yes I discovered the hard way that DR is only for Exchange.

As for the "why," the answer is painfully simple for me - as someone who "grew up" in the corporate world with BES, I've become terribly spoiled. I'm on an IMAP server now, and I can't sync my folders worth a darn - not even sent or deleted. (Yes, auto BCC + a series of rules in outlook and filters in BIS is VERY helpful.)

<Of course, the wonderful job I have now is worth the loss of BES>

For the last two months I was on a T-Mobile Dash which, while being a lovely device for I am sure many, just couldn't fill the void of a BB. Nothing against the Dash, in fact I am sure that if we were on an Exchange server, it would compete nicely with the BB.

Best,
Lewis

Yes, I did research on the leading providers, but I ruled it out when I discovered that it meant essentially forwarding all of my corporate email to a "stranger" server.

Thank you,
Lewis

i think auto BCC + a series of rules in outlook and filters in BIS is gonna be your way to go
is gonna be your way to go
not BES... but well nothing is

Agreed. Using rules and filters, I was able to set it such that I get my IMAP polled emails (albeit after 15 minutes ) and I autoBCC myself so I have a record of sent mail in Outlook. Note that this requires me to manually run the rule from my desktop - for some reason it does not do the filing as messages arrive.

Hardly perfect, but like you said, without BES it's not going to be. It is however, miles ahead of what I was experiencing with my T-Mo Dash - no knock on the Dash, it's a great device - but not for my needs. That device's lack of autoBCC functionality boggles my mind.

Thanks,
Lewis
