8700C TCP Stack setup for Opera not working...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi guys,

I have an 8700C on Cingular and I want to use the opera browser. I have sucessfully installed opera via the USB cable and configured the TCP stack with the following settings:

APN: wap.cingular
username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
PASSWORD: CINGULAR1

When I start Opera, it asks to go through some tests to see how it will connect to the Internet. It takes several minutes, but then says it has failed.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Lagerbrewer

did you hard reset your device after setting tcp?
if not, uninstall opera
hard reset
reinstall opera, try again

also look in the rim forum, or do a search because this is common topic

Thanks but yea, I tried this and it didn't work. I did it a couple times.

The hard reset for an 8700 means to take the battery out right? Since there's no pinhole on that model?

I'll search around in the RIM forum some more.

Thanks,
Lagerbrewer

Did you change the Application permissions of Opera to allow network and data connections?

Posted by: lagerbrewer

Not specifically. As soon as I started up Opera after the install it asked me to enter "random information" with keystrokes until a progress bar was full. It then said that it wanted to run like 10 different tests to see how it would connect to the Internet. This took several minutes and during that time it asked me to OK two different types of data connections. One was http and I don't remember the other. After all tests were complete, it said that it had failed to connect to the Internet. I tried installing and uninstalling Opera with hard resets in between. No luck.

I am thinking that I might sell this unit and get an unlocked Dash!

There's logic, because you can't run Opera Mini? Has anyone asked yet, do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan? FWIW Opera is a useful browser on the BB but nothing spectacular...

try options > advanced options > applicaitons > highligh opera > menu > edit permissions > allow everyting > menu > save
try again
also check firewall settings
keep messing with it and you can get it to work
i have yet to see one not work

no he doesnt
that is why he is doing what he is doing
i agree, if he wants full blow data cpapbility without paying for a real data plan then he is better off with a non-blackberry
but if he would like to get some data working with what he has then he is on the right path

Thanks for the suggestion. I went in there and changed "connections" to allow...it was on "custom". There was a second setting, I think it was called "interactions" which was set to custom and would not allow me to change it. I fired up Opera again and....nothing, same failed message.

I do really appreciate your help allen. My whole purpose in getting this thing was to have a backup device that I could grab on days when I knew I'd have lots of email to deal with. I use gmail, so as I mentioned before I intended on accessing it through Opera Mini or the Java client. I was not aware that BB data services went through BB's servers before I bought this, hence the pain in the arse TCP trickery. I got a good deal on it spur of the moment, so no big deal, I can just ebay it off. I think I would be better off with a WM5 device unlocked since BB has the data thing so locked up.

might as well make one more attempt
go to www.cingular.com/bbdownloads
download the handheld software for 8700
run apploader
uncheck opera but leave all the system apps checked
on the summary screen choose advanced
check the boxes for erase applications and data
let it run through
once its all finished
set your tcp settings, save
hard reset
install opera
cross fingers

usally works on first try, i bet its something simple

While some users have found a way to buck the system in this capacity with a NEXTEL BB on the Boost network this is probably all for not. I've said it many times before, if your looking to do the BB thing on the cheap you bought the wrong device to begin with... BB communicate through RIM's secure server and RIM's severs only, hence the BlackBerry Data Plan requirement. Without a BlackBerry Data Plan you don't have any service books pushed to your device, without the required service books all you have is voice and SMS.

whatever dude

this has nothing to do with nextel or boost
this works for gsm blackberrys
i have seen it work on a number of carreirs

i know very well how blackberrys work and what the service book is and what each service inside of it does and how it does what it does

now i will not deny that to use a blackberry as it was intented, a blackberry plan is required
however, you if you have access to another tcp/ip capable apn on your carriers network, you can define this in the device, and apps that are written to use the device's tcp connection will work

largerbrewer started this thread because he could not get it to work
so im trying to help him
ive help many others

so im not gonna argue weather or not it should work that is not the point of this thread
