Just ordered vx6700, couple of questions

Hi all, first time poster, long-time lurker. I've scoured this forum trying to find these answers, and I don't think any one thread has really helped me.

I'll make them quick and easy.

1. What is the max miniSD memory the vx6700 can support?
2. When using the modem dialer software, do you incur data billing or does it use airtime minutes (I can figure out how to install it all, I've just not seen anyone concrete answers about this question)? Or, are there options for getting it both ways?
3. I bought my phone from eBay and it does not include the manual or software. I know ActiveSync is available at the MS website, and I've already downloaded the PDF manual from HTC's website. Is there anything else important I'll be missing from the software, and if so, where can I find it?
4. Any other weird bugs anyone has noticed?

Thanks in advance, once I get used to using this phone, I'll certainly try to be a contributing member of this community.

1. No clue on max but my 2gig works perfectly.
2. Again, don't know there since I don't use it for this.
3. see below

I would suggest doing a search on these boards for the username "ajm" and check out his sig links.

Then do a few googles on the phone. The hacker support for this device is outstanding. PPC6700 is the Sprint version and most things that apply to it carry over to your VX6700 obviously. There's not a lot of difference in the tweaks but there are a few. Reading up on the various boards that support the devices will produce LOTS of good info on them.

4. I haven't noticed anything terrible but I only used the stock ROM for about two weeks max until I got a version of 3.5 working.

Grats on your new toy/tool! I love mine.

Thanks, that's a start. I've been reading every forum I can, and it's a lot of information to process.

I would really like to know if anyone uses a 4 GB minSD card in this thing (without any problems) because if I'm going to buy one, I just want to get the largest right away.

I use a 2gb minisd as well. Why would a bigger one not work?

I not 100% sure about the whole reason, but sometimes these phones just can't access all the memory (more accurately, the OS, as far as I know). I know that my current phone, an LG VX8300 can only read up to 2GB microSD reliably.

When I Googled "max memory for XV6700" I saw one website that only sold up to 2 GB for it. So, that's why I'm unsure.

If you do a search on 4gb over at ppcgeeks in the apache forum you'll see a discussion with a few people reporting success with 4gb cards. Not sure if that'll help you but those guys are truly awesome with this device.

4GB is incompatible because anything over 2GB is high-capacity flash (SDHC) which Windows Mobile doesn't currently support. Mike Calligaro of Microsoft's Windows Mobile team posted some useful information on this topic: Windows Mobile Team Blog : Everything You Want To Know About SD...

I've also read those posts on other forums claiming that non-SDHC 4GB MiniSD cards work, allegedly if you format them a specific way. I would take those claims with caution. I haven't tried it myself so I don't know if it's true or not, but everything I've read has said that 2GB is the *maximum* that the pre-SDA 2.00 specification allows for. That means XV-6700 hardware is incapable of using anything higher than 2GB, even though some people say 4GB cards work if you just "format it fat16." I also think any card that claims to be 4GB but not SDHC is suspect; maybe it's not really 4GB. If you risk the money on one of these cards then please post your results in this thread -- but I won't be putting my money on it.

Maybe somebody will add SDHC support in a hacked firmware update? Given the rate of progress that hobbyist custom ROM developers have had recently, I think anything's possible for the XV-6700.

If it's more storage capacity you seek and you're good with configuring a web server then consider hosting your content online on your own server. I use a PHP streaming media server called Streamline to place some of my own music online (private and passworded) so that I can stream it to my phone. It works great and doesn't really consume much of my monthly EV-DO bandwidth (Verizon terminates your contract if you reach 5GB/mo). Each album is a playlist that I can pull up in Pocket Player's media browser.

Or you can just use Orb.

Thanks AJM, that's great info, I had pretty much decided to just go with 2 GB to be safe, I do want to hack this thing, but I only have interests in doing so with certain features.
