Blackjack Contact/phonebook Hassle

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a real issue, and it is annoying the hell out of me...

When I go to my contacts/phonebook on any and every other phone I have ever used (I've had MANY), and hit a particular letter key on the keypad, every contact beginning with that particular letter is displayed. I simply scroll down to the one I want, and dial. No muss & no fuss!!

BUT...on the Blackjack, when I do the same thing, every contact with that particular letter anywhere in the name of the person or business name is displayed. I then have to scroll down the long list to finally get to the person/business I want. It's bogus!! It is especially a hassle to do while driving.

Is there any way to adjust that so it behaves like every other phone in the world? Please help me with this. It is a gigantic point of frustration to me!!

That's a feature, and a great one at that. All the past smartphones I have had have that feature. I love it and no you can't change it. If the name your looking for is cramer, then you type "cra" and everything with cra comes up.

Ummm...I wonder why the Palm Treo line doesn't have that "great feature"? then again, maybe you have never had a Treo in all the past smartphones you have had. If you have to press more than one key to get where you want...why do you love it so? Wouldn't it be more convenient to hit just one?

I have heard the arguement that it is for finding a contact when you don't know how to spell the person or businesses name. That's pretty lame. I have over 300 contacts at the present, and never have a problem remembering how their names are spelled. I see it, not as a "great feature", but more of a waste of time and energy.

Oh well...if it can't be changed, so be it.

I'm confused. My 680 does the same thing as the Blackjack.

I forget exactly how I set it, but somewhere (sorry I'm so vague) there is a setting that adjusts the lettered keypad to go from the phone screen directly to the contact list when a letter key is pressed. The downside is that you can no longer use the keypad keys to dial a number by pressing the number keys (xxx-xxx-xxxx) with this setting...you must use the keypad screen to do it.

I'll look around tomorrow and find out how I did it, and I'll post if for you mbranscum.

I would be nice to have a similar setting on the BJ...but there is no touchscreen dialpad to substitute, is there?

Not everyone is going to love all the features in a windows mobile smartphone. Just like not everyone likes things about palm device. I guess I just really like that feature. If you have 50 names that begin with a t, then you don't have to scroll thru all the names that begin with t to get to the one you want. You just type in the name and it will filter all the other names out, then you hit talk. It's a preference, i guess. Also just to clarify, the past phones I was talking about were all wm smartphones. I have never had a treo. They should make this an option, on how you want to search thru your phoneebook. How hard would that be?

Considering how much trouble Samsung went to to allow pretty much customize every other area of the phone...this seems like it would have been a piece of cake.

I am not going to give up the BJ because of this shortcoming. I really like it overall, and I am coming to appreciate the WM5 OS more than I did when I had it for a short while prior to getting the Treo. It's really a lot of fun to use, and in some ways I prefer it over the 680.

Now, if Samsung could build a phone with the same form as the BJ, but incorporate a touchscreen...that would be the best of both worlds to me!

Agreed, me too. I used to have a SPH-i500, which still ranks as one of my favorite phones I have ever had. Flip touchscreen palm phone. But this one would be even better, full qwerty and touchscreen, awesome.
