What Firmware is This?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: yokomoto

I was looking at this 903SH and I still cannot figure out what firmware it is.

Can it be jap? or chinese? it seems like a mixture of both on this phone. What do you guys think?
the battery icon/signal meter/ menus/ language etc all dont match up to be exactly one firmware. is it the hybrid?

Posted by: martindesu

It's Japanese with the Vodafone theme set.

Posted by: sugo

With the startup message, provisioning and the main menu, it looks like a japanese firmware to me.

Posted by: yokomoto

ive never used the jap fw before but why does the main menu have a bar that is half japanese and the bottom bar is half chinese...

and the standby screen have the FONT time and date of a japanese while the battery and signal icon is chinese. that is so weird!

Posted by: Cloud V

As the Japanese language includes Chinese Kanji characters, it's a good bet that it is simply the Japanese firmware. I've not heard of a mix of Chinese/Japanese.

Someone has gone on a major firmware melding. I'll bet it's some programmer from the ima forums, maybe Terenshi? He likes doing that kind of thing...

Picture 1: 'Please Wait' written in Japanese using the Chinese font. = Unusual
Picture 2: Shortcuts page with the incorrect icon next to Messaging (it's a shrunk main menu icon, instead of the normal one). Also the confirm button icon in the menu bar is taken from the 703SH's firmware. = Very unusual
Picture 3: Only English is a selectable language. There's no 903 firmware at all that only offers English as the language. Confirm button is still from 703SH. = Unusual
Picture 4: The standby screen with a Chinese firmware status bar at the top and a JP firmware menu bar at the bottom. = Unusual
Picture 5: The JP firmware reprovisioning menu being asked in a Chinese firmware setting. Also the clock display is there at the top - this should only be in JP firmware and not Chinese ones. Confirm button is still from 703SH. = Very unusual
Picture 6: Here's a mad meshing of firmwares. Status bar is Chinese firmware, main menu is JP firmware, menu bar is Chinese firmware with confirm button from 703SH. = Extremely unusual
Picture 7: Same story, status bar is Chinese firmware, enter number dialog is from JP firmware and menu bar Chinese firmware with 703SH confirm button. = Unusual
Picture 8: Apart from clock display this all looks Chinese firmware. Unless the attachment bar at the bottom has icons from JP firmware. Not sure about this one.

Bottom line - someone's had fun with melding firmwares. Very weird development.

?? The pictures I'm seeing that he has posted are all in English, save for the first one that says しばらくお待ちください... is there some other pictures that aren't loading?

Posted by: AL9999

There are eight pictures. As you say, first one says Please Wait in Japanese, the others are in English. What language they're in isn't the point; the point is that someone has taken components of several firmwares and fused them together to create this weird thing.

Ah, I went back through and see what you mean. If anything Al, I'm impressed that you picked up all the differences. さすがね、アル!

Posted by: ericc88

definatly jap fw....its not chinese in te first pic its jap, i would know cuz i can read chinese. secondly only jap fw have full wall papers (no bar at bottom just icons)

Posted by: marco712

lol my first reaction was that maybe someone just flashed their phone a bunch of times and took separate pictures each time.. but nvm it does look like someone was bored and programed different parts together... lol that or someone ps'ed it all

Posted by: yokomoto

wow... i didnt know that this firmware can get so confusing... some is really having a lot of fun welding these things together arent they?
\
by the way, where can we find Terenshi... i know he was one of first to unlock the 903SH... i wonder if hes working on the 904SH

Posted by: yuuki888

it's the Chinese firmware but put into the Japanese country code
it's identical to what mine is like right now..

that's the reason only english is available.. it's because there's no japanese font on the phone

Posted by: yokomoto

can you take pictress of your 903SH acting the same way as the one on this thread?
take a pic of your main menu and your stand by screen...

Posted by: Havo

Looks like JP if u ask me.

Chinese FW with JP country code? Is that done with 8+power button?

Posted by: marco712

maybe with TW firmware?

You can't do power +8 with HK firmware.

Posted by: yuuki888

i'm guessing it's a different chinese firmware from mine
but i know a lot is similar

and yes it was most likely done with power 8

-goes to take pics-

Posted by: yuuki888

okayy just finished taking pics..
and yes you can do power 8 with hk firmware -- i have it and did it

wahhaa

Posted by: AL9999

Well I think that answers the question then, switching it into JP firmware mode causes this messy meshed up firmware to appear.

Posted by: sugo

It looks interesting but can you input japanese with that japanese/hk mixed state?

I will probably stay intact with the HK 1.02x as it has been extremely stable in the past 11 months.

Posted by: aw614

can it be done on firmware a6290?

Posted by: yokomoto

interesting.

Posted by: yuuki888

yep i can input japanese..
but only katakana.. not sure if you guys know what that is

カタカナ and use the emoticon option while typing

hk 1.02x is very stable firmware

Posted by: marco712

weird... my hk firmware won't do 8+power... maybe because it's a 2006?

I've been used 903SH in Japan under its original JP firmware for couples of years... For this case, I will say... "WEIRD"...

Pic 1: The welcome screen shows Japanese character said "shibaraku omachi kudasai"... its belongs to JP firmware.

Pic 2: The icon menu, signal level, battery level, fonts, and theme is definetely belong to HK firmware (the UK/JP firmware have more eye-candy icons)

Pic 3: The language option seems belong to JP firmware (but it has to be a japanese language option there, where was it gone???). The font used in this menu are belong to HK firmware.

Pic 4: In this standby screen, it shows typical Vodafone icon of JP firmware at the lower row, but it show signal level and battery icon at upper row which is belong to HK firmware. The fonts used for clock and calendar display are definitely from the JP firmware. And even more strange, it used the tiger wallpaper which came from the original firmware of" V904SH".

Pic 5: Provisioning menu available only in the JP firmware, but as in the previous case, the fonts used in this menu are from HK firmware (JP firmware having a slightly wider alphabetical fonts).

Pic 6: This menu should belong to the UK or JP firmware (notice the black-striped-red bar at upper menu and also the main icon menu). But, the original UK or JP firmware should have a black bar at lower menu while this menu having the red bar from the HK firmware. The signal level is HK firmware, but the clock display near the battery level is exclusive to JP firmware.

Pic 7: Signal level is HK firmware, clock display is JP frimware, the black-striped red bar is from JP/UK firmware, the red bar is HK firmware.

Pic 8: This MMS menu interface is from JP firmware (notice the wider alphabecital fonts character). But signal level icon is HK firmware, clock display is JP frimware, the red bar is HK firmware.

Seems that somebody has totally messed his/her 903 by some 8+power trick... which make the phone seems to have a mixed UK-JP-HK firmware in a single body...

your phone cant do 8+POWER BECAUSE you probably have an official verision of the hk fw.

Can someone please just write an account of what this power 8 thing is because searching for it it proving useless - lots of times people refer to it but where's a descriptive thread?

Posted by: marco712

here you go, read through this thread.

I have to say, I just did a search for 'changing firmware' and I found an older thread with the same instructions on the first page. You need to improve your searching skills martin.

I wasn't aware that the power 8 changed firmware. Thanks anyway

Posted by: AL9999

Well in essence you're switching to a different firmware on the fly... changing to Euro from JP for example

Have you done it?

I have both Euro (Black) and Japan (Red) versions of the phone. I don't much like the reprovisioning or the lack of ability to recieve MMS - it means I can't email to Japan (well, receive anyway). Sucks. I do like all the other features though.

T9 - to do or not to do?

T9 makes life a lot easier and I feel like I am forcing myself to not use it. I prefer the look of the red... I don't know!

I know it's a decision I have to make, but I am not sure what I want to do yet! (and I know there's a lot of threads discussing it).

eh. you're welcome for giving you the thread martin. no need to thank me!

last time i help someone out *waves middle finger*

Hey dude, thank you! I only just found your link

Sorry, I wasn't blanking you at all - just absent minded of me.

Posted by: yuuki888

haha i think sometimes you need to press 8 before power

but mine is 2006 OFFICIAL 1.02X HK firmware

i actually switched back to hk today.. i missed my t9 texting

Posted by: AL9999

No I haven't done it because my 903 is an official Australian one with Euro firmware. That firmware switch trick only works on flashed 903s and not unmodified ones.

Posted by: K_Gokiburi

I've tried switching from EURO to JPN with Power+8. MMS will work both ways (Send/Receive) and there's no Reprovisioning prompt.

However, there's no Japanese text input (phone will reboot if you try to), no T9 and you can't remove the SIM card (You'd get the Repro problem).
