retrieving phonebook from semi-broken E815

My daughter dropped her Verizon Motorola E815, which opened up, face down, and someone evidently stepped on it. It does power up, but the display is blank. Needless to say it's in very bad shape and was replaced.

Now, I'm trying to retrieve the phonebook/contact list from it.

The problem is that the lower keyboard half of the phone works ok, but the display is dead. I dismantled it to the point where I can see that the ribbon cable connecting the upper and lower half has been severed.

Interestly, it powers up, and if I call it, it rings, I can answer, and it transmits voice, but obviously the earpiece is not working. I had used Motorola phonetools with it awhile back, so I figured if I could enable bluetooth, I might be able to retrieve the phonebook.

Because there is no display, I found a buddy who also has an E815 and we walked through the keypad sequence to enable bluetooth. Unfortunately this did not work. I cannot communicate with the phone from my bluetooth laptop. I don't know if it's because the bluetooth antenna on the phone is broken, or if it's because the key sequence is incorrect. I did try quite a few times.

I was wondering if I had the Motorola data cable if I could retrieve the phonebook that way?

Any other suggestions?

I know this is a longshot, but figured I'd ask. I like technical challenges.

Thanks very much,
Tom

There is software on the market that will read the phonebook (we use Susteen's Data Pilot in our shop). The software only requires that the phone fully power up. The phone is connected via USB to the computer.

We do data recovery like this all day.

Thanks. At least there's hope. I also called the Verizon store and they said there's a chance they can do it.

Thanks again.

verizon stores can generally do it, for free if you are replacing a phone through them.

i have had it done before

the only thing i didn't like was the order in which the transfer happens. contacts are restored in alphabetical order, so speed dial locations will change.

Actually .. it sounds like you can get the steps to get the bluetooth powering on .. but you'll also need to set it in discovery mode when trying to find it on your laptop .. then enter the passkey when prompted (you'll need to hit your left soft-key .. and then enter the numbers).

If you can do all those steps just "once" .. then you should have no problems connecting with Phone Tools.

Of course .. it's easier just to use a data cable .. and hook up to phone tools directly .. then getting the data off would be as easy as A-B-C.

Or if you have the data cable.. use BitPim.. its freeware and if your replacement phone is not a motorola, you still have a chance to restore your contacts...

Also, bitpim also keeps speed dial locations.
