Could someone please help answer the following:

1. If I have a Blackberry 8800 but no data plan, can I still use GPS?

2. If yes, are there any charges and how is the charge applied?

3. is the same true for using Google maps?

Please share any other info on GPS service or related charges

Thnx in advance

1. GPS does not use data, so you can use it without a data plan.

2. I lied a little bit in my first answer, if you use an application that uses some form of assisted-GPS. It requires data to be sent to the cell network, but I dont think it requires all that much data.

3. Google Maps sends bitmap images. You had better have a large data plan.

Uhhhh - we need some clarification here.

1. The GPS chip does not need data to broadcast and receive sat signals but is pretty much useless unless you have a 3rd party app such as Blackberry Maps or TeleNav.

2. Dependant on how much you use a GPS assisted app such as TeleNav or Blackberry maps usage can be high.

3. Google Maps in not GPS enabled in it's current release. The 8800 comes with Blackberry Maps that can connect to the internal GPS for positioning. For turn by turn you should look at something like TeleNav. Any map updates need a data plan as there are not currently any GPS software packages that are installed on the micro-SD card vs data downloads.

uh, if you have a blackberry with no data plans, you can pretty much use only the phone and sms, thats it, nothing else. no internet, email. in order to use the gps, you need a maping application which uses data. it won't matter if you have 10 gps in your berry, without a map to pinpoint your position, its useless.

thanks for all your help...I guess just the car GPS will do...I purchased a BB8100 instead of BB8800.

wouldn't it be technically feasible to download a GPS program onto the microsd and use it from there instead of having data stream from a source and being charged data?

... Except you can't install or run anything off of the microSD card except for music, videos and pictures.

If there was an app that stored maps on the microSD card you could...
