Alternate Data Access Method

I remember, many moons ago, there was a way to get data access by changing the data connection point to a different number. Instead of being data at that point, it was billed as minutes.

Is this still possible? I have a huge number of minutes and would rather use those than get charged per KB.

Thanks,
Pat

That's a violation of your T&C and Cingy can terminate your contract if you do it.

If you read the fine print of your contract, it clearly states under the heading of Unlimited Voice Services that: "Unlimited voice services are provided solely for live dialog between two individuals. Unlimited voice services may not be used for conference calling, call forwarding, monitoring services, data transmissions, transmissions of broadcasts, transmission of recorded material, or other connections which do not consist of uninterrupted live dialog between two individuals. If AT&T finds that you are using an unlimited voice service offering for other than live dialog between two individuals, AT&T may at it's option terminate your service..."

Now, whether or not they catch you is an entirely different story...

I don't think those T&C has anything to do with CSD, which is a CINGULAR provided service.

Cingular no longer adds CSD to new accounts. I'm sure you could do it if you were persistent and got to tech support and told them you still need CSD to access a corporate dial-up modem.

The problem with CSD is that it's only 9.6kbps. Not 96, but 9.6.
GPRS is up to about 35kbps, EDGE is about 180-200kbps, UMTS 384, and HSDPA in the 800kbs range (typical, not max speeds.)

9.6kbps is beyond slow. It made sense in the WAP page days, but if you're doing anything except accessing WAP sites, then don't bother.
