Hello All,
I'm tired of looking around at IM clients for AIM and what not, that i end up having to pay for and do not have the functionality I am used to. I am interested in creating my own application and wondering if anyone would like to join in. I am new to programming the smartphone and wondering what languages are used in doing so. If anyone else is interested in helping me, it would be great. Please keep in mind, this project (if successful) will remain free.

You're gonna be looking at a lot of work. Typically IM clients are written in C++, but understanding the protocols/networking fundamentals for the project could take you quite a bit of time. IM clients, though simple in concept, are anything but simple in implementation. I'm a programmer with knowledge in multiple languages and I myself have considered making an IM app but decided against it just because it will take forever, but if you have the time, have at it.

Sorry for the discouraging outlook, but maybe you will get some help from the open source community on it (sourceforge, etc). Its worth a try in that route.
