Research in motion "sensing"

I've been playing around with my 8800 at work today, and I've noticed that sometimes when I set it down on a table for a minute the screen will dim slightly. When I pick it up, and without pressing any buttons, the screen resumes its brightest setting. So cool! How does it do this?
Another thing that kind of scares me is how the system shuts down and restarts if it gets bumped too hard. Can somebody tell me if this is simply a safety feature?

It's called putting/removing your hand from the light sensor.

BB's since the 8700 have had light sensors to automatically adjust the backlighting.
As for the shutdowns, I've never experienced them but generally I avoid bumping the device. Still, when I have dropped it it has never shutdown.
