Acura NSX to have 500HP at 23.5 MPG

Honda has done some amazing things with engines over the years, with a string of silky-smooth powerplants that, despite their small size, pump enough juice to the front wheels to keep even the ardent enthusiast happy. Perhaps even more exciting is that Honda manages to provide pop at the pedal, while consistently showing up at the top of the fuel economy charts.

If there was ever a vehicle that Honda could allow to be a bit of a gas hog, it would be the next-generation Acura NSX, which is rumored to be powered by a 5.0L V10 with 500hp. But with all the success Honda has enjoyed as an environmentally-friendly company, management and engineers decided not to rest on their laurels. The goal for team Honda is to achieve a combined fuel economy of 23.5 mpg, which would be great for most vehicles, much less a low-volume supercar. To put 23.5 mpg from a free-revving, 500hp V10 into perspective, the V10 Dodge Viper averages 12/20 city/highway. Heck, the previous generation NSX struggled to achieve 20 mpg, and it had a 3.2L V6 rated at 276 hp.

The folks over at Honda have created quite the stir surrounding the soon-to-be-unveiled NSX, and with 500hp and great fuel economy, we're more excited than ever for this year's Tokyo Motor Show.

Wow, that's really good for a 10 cylinder with 500 horsepower.

Especially when compared to the other 10 cylinder performance vehicles out there now...

BMW M5/M6 - 12/18
Audi S6 - 15/21
Dodge Viper - 12/20
Lambo Gallardo - 12/18

C6 Z06, 7.0L V8 = 16 / 26 mpg

As Honda engineers continue to work away in secret on the new V-10 engine for the Acura NSX replacement, now comes word that Honda’s not just looking for power, torque and speed, but also class topping eco numbers from this stellar new engine.

The understanding in Tokyo’s Honda watching circles is that the new normally-aspirated V-10 will displace around 5.0-liters, push out 500+ brake horsepower and no less remarkably, achieve a 10.0 km/l rating (equal to 23.5 mpg) rating in Japan’s standard 10.15-mode fuel cycle.

Putting that into perspective, the last NSX Type R with 3.2-liter V-6 and 276 bhp was an 8.6 km/l car in Japan.

That’s one helluva challenge to hit those numbers—but if anyone can do it, the smart money says Honda can.

I don't get what a combined mileage is, someone wanna explain? I must say it doesn't look too goood as with most new cars but I like the power.

i guess Acura moved from the pseudo Ferrari look...

as per combined mileage...i guess its the average of both city and HWY.

You would be correct

Even so, I would never buy one because of the squinty head lights and the expensive price tag.

i think it looks pretty cool. it looks "futuristic".

Yeah it does. Unfortunately I doubt it'll be anything near the "futuristic" appearance we see here for production. That glass roof will go too, but it'd be cool if they kept a black roof as an option like the early 90's NSX's had

I don't see the big deal in the MPG rating... most other big displacement supercars get similar "combined" MPG. Big V8's can get incredible highway mileage because they can cruise along at just above idle RPMs. Also, they're not constantly high-strung like a smaller displacement, F/I motor.

Now if CITY rating was 23.5... then we'll talk.

No, you're right, 23.5 mpg isn't anything spectacular, but for a 500hp V10, that's different. I don't personally like the V10's, I think a V8 would be just fine, but that would require Honda to build a V8, something they said they'd never do, which is my theory on why they dropped a 10 into it instead of an 8

any reason why they wouldn't build a v8?

They've never actually given a reason. They'd rather build V6's that aim at V8's than actually build a V8, but that does hurt them quite a bit.

yea, most "futuristic" concept cars seem to never go into production.

that's why they're called concept cars...they're only built for future ideas on body style. You rarely see concept cars actually going directly into production with the same body style

It probably won't look like that, but the Camaro and Mustangs looked like their concept....Hopefully this won't.
