iPod Nano problem

Ok so my friend has a 1st gen Nano (Windows formatted), and whenever she plugs it into any computer, it shows "Do Not Disconnect" and just freezes. The computer doesn't see it, and the only thing that can be done is a reset. I also tried plugging it into my MacBook Pro, and the same thing happens. It's also not charging while it's plugged into the USB port. I tried charging it with my wall charger, and that worked, but that doesn't help much at all since she can't change songs.

She called Apple tech support, and they basically told her that she can send it in for them to look at it, but it would cost something like $50 because the warranty is almost expired (that's what she told me... doesn't sound right to me, but i think it's irrelevant anyway).

Is there anything she can try? A firmware restore doesn't seem to be an option because iTunes doesn't see the iPod at all...

Thanks

have you tried using a different usb cable??

on a different subject, my L6 kept restarting or got stuck when I'd charge it up using a usb cable, yet it would charge using the usb car charger. when I switched cables from Radio Crap, it worked! I could now charge the L6 from my pc usb connection
