Finished product of BLK housing w/ front camera on 8525..PICS available with tutorial

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: FLiPinoy9oNe6

The reason for this thread is for the housing swap that I will be doing in the next few days. I orginally started a thread about the black housing being available on cnn.cn for this phone and wasnt able to edit the post to add pictures to the first page, therefore I had to start another. I will be adding additional pics of the black housing once the project is complete. There have been a few people asking me to do a tutorial on taking the housing apart so they can attempt to do the same swap. Sorry if there has already been a thread on this tutorial.

These are the tools required. The Leatherman tool I actually didnt have to use. The credit card or even an old Sim card sleeve will not scratch the phone which is more recommended than the leatherman tool. Please keep in mind that this is at your own risk and I will not be responsible for the outcome if attempted.

TOOLS:

1. Old credit card/sim card sleeve
2. Original Leatherman Tool
3. T6,9,8 Tool - $4.99 at Home Depot

1. As you can see there are 4 Screws with one being under the void sticker on the top left. Keep in mind the warranty will be voided if sticker/seal is broken. I was able to actualy take mine off without ripping it. I used a scalpel blade to get under and lift without breaking.

This is the underbody of the second picture. It shouws you where the clips are located so you get an idea where to run the credit card along and pop open the side of the panel in order to release the back casing.

There is only 1 screw on the left upper side. Make sure you detach the ribbon on the lower right side. Once that is done. You can lift the motherboard starting from the left side and finishing on the right side. The two clips on top give you and idea what is also holding the board down. Once you start lifting the board up there will be a ribbon connected to the bottom of the board. There is also some adhesive holding it down which you need to peel off. This will not harm the ribbon. The tape is just another way to secure the ribbon. DO NOT take it completely take it off of the ribbon as it will be used to secure it back on when put together. The picture below will shoe the ribbon apart

The left side of the picture shows the underbody of the motherboard and the left is the casing that attaches it to the part that houses the LCD screen. The curved arrow in the middle shows the direction on how it should be taken apart and put back together as well. The four screws need to be undone to get to the housing of the LCD. They also hold on to the rail that the flip slides on.

Once the middle section of the phone is unscrewed you will see the underbody of the LCD housing. These 4 screws need to be taken apart. This is where the credit card or old sim card sleeve comes in handy.

1. Once the screws have been taken off, use the card to run along the side of the housing and snap off as you run it along the side as shown in picture one. Slide the ribbon through the the little slit, dont worry about the tape being bent as long as the ribbon isnt.

2. The second pic show where the clips are so you get an idea where to pop the card in order for the housing to seperate.

This pic shows the casing taken apart that the houses the LCD. There are six clips that hold the LCD down which is displayed in picture two. You have to kinda peel the clips apart once you lift them up. This will allow the screen to lift right out of the housing.

Now reverse these steps and youll be able to put the phone back together. Make sure all cables, which only includes two are put back in place otherwise the screen and god knows what else wont work properly.

FINAL Product!!!!!!!!

It has a TYTN camera installed inside. I found one on ebay that was pretty cheap that some1 was actually selling out just for parts. I'm in the process of getting the application called coolcamera from ateksoftDOTcom to enable the front camera which is gonna run about $17.99. This will allow me to use the front lens to take pictures at 640X480 resolution(VGA), record video and also use my phone as a web cam for the computer.

Nah I havent mailed denis about it at all. I was just concerned about actually getting mine in. U should mail the guy too see if he has em available.

LOL. I wish. I do get called the phone doctor at work since I'm always fixing my co-workers phones when needed.

Posted by: kmdkmd

wow very nice post... amazing that you can add a cam to the 8525 lol... i wouldve never thought of doing that.

Posted by: monkey28rb

damn i wanna buy it.. but its sold out still arrg

Posted by: newnoise1024

Damn, if i had the balls to take apart my phone i would do that in a second. I hate the cingular branding on my housing ( I live in Toronto!)

Maybe if theres more in stock, i'll order one and suck it up and take the damn thing apart.

Believe it or not guys. Ive taken many of phones apart, and PDA's are much easier to take apart and put together than I would say, the motorola Slvrs and razrs. The housing is just a shell where on the razr phones the housing is actually held together by the components of the interior of the phone. If that makes sense

So you could honestly say that anyone here could take their 8525 apart, with caution, and not have to worry? Is there anything you came across that is more fragile? any suggestions or things to look out for when taking the housing off?

was assembling it a snap?

*there's my pun of the day.. lol*

Nice Tut man... now I just need to find a front cam and that case

Very nice work, congrats!

Wow, this is so true. I took apart my 8125 & Blackjack with ease and ruined a few RAZRs taking them apart,

Either way, the job you did was cool. You can buy TyTN cases and install refurbished 8125 parts and screw people you don't like.

I wouldnt say not worry. U just gotta be real careful and patient. The thing here is that there are only two cables that need to be taken apart from the actual board ((see picture 4 and 5)). And all it is is a snap on snap off type deal. The one thing I did fail to mention cause I didnt think about it during the tutorial is in picture 5, its easier to disconnect the cable when the slider is open. The same when you go to put the canle back on. The hardest part is taking the back part of the lcd screen off ((see picture 7)). The back is tightly fitted so its better to use an old credit card to runa long the side. The Leatherman tool could scratch the case where the credit card is strong enough to pry it open but not enough to scratch it. The card will actualy bend before the phone even gets scratched. One piece of good advice, DO NOT force anything when taking it apart. With the proper angle and tools things should just snap off. If your having to force it, then your not doing it properly. Maybe the card isnt positioned properly on the clamp to snap it right off, or a screw may have been forgotten about, etc, etc.

Thanks for the addional information, i will be buying the housing as soon as i see it in stock and attempting my own housing switch

Great tutorial, man. The guys over at cnn.cn should be paying you for this!

Hmm interesting, I work on some phones from time to time (razr's, 6102's, slvrs...normal Cingular phones) so i figure I could do this if I wanted to. Please explain the camera situation, there wasn't a camera under there already was there (there was speculation on this when the phone came out)? If you are installing a camera..how the heck are you going to manage that? Is there a port on the circuit board to plug in a camera? Thanks.

Yes in fact there is a port on the board for the camera to plug right in. the camera sits in the tray and when the board is closed it will snap right in.

Posted by: lilmike09

sweet. looks like im gonna have to buy an old tytn off someone

Posted by: silverzz28

Qurstions....Where did you buy the parts and how did you enable the camera?

Posted by: ChanceGearheart

Nice, i'd like to know that too

Posted by: FLiPinoy9oNe6

The camera came off of a TYTN that someone sold cause they broke their LCD. I purchased it to use it for its parts, mainly the front camera. The camera was enabled once I downloaded the coolcamera app from ateksoft(dot)com.

Posted by: silverzz28

thanks! do you have a link to the software? also will another camera from 8525 work in the front?

Hmm, well that's pretty neat. I wonder if you can make video sharing work for it once you install the camera? I have you found anything for that yet?

yes you can make video calls as long as your rom supports it...ie use WWE roms from tytn or other variants that supports it.

I would take the phone apart again and reinstall everything again. make sure all cables and connections are contacting the proper boards. There may be something you missed

You wouldn't know what type of a glue they use to hold the screen and the ribbon together would u? I had to replace a screen on my brothers phone 3 times now and its barely sticking. Could I just use a double sided tape or would that not fly?

First off, serious props for putting together this tutorial! I was thinking more along the lines of magician than surgeon, but that works too. I stumbled onto this post a few days ago after cracking the LCD display on my 8525, and I have to say that I gained a serious appreciation for the quality of craftsmanship of HTC's devices after pulling mine apart.

So, for anyone in the same situation as me, I first called Cingular, who said they'd send me a replacement phone for about $500. Looking for a less expensive solution, I called HTC America's support line, who said for about $175 I could send my phone to them and they'd replace the broken LCD. That still seemed a bit high, so I did some searching online and found that you can buy the replacement LCD for $50 to $75 (you can actually find these at cnn.cn, too). So, if you're willing to take on the risk of doing everything yourself, you can save some serious cash.

Also, this may save you some time--the LCD is 2.8" and made by Toppoly, model TD028STEB1. Mine was part # 60H00037-01M, but as I understand it, 60H00037-00M works as well. You will most likely want to buy it with the digitizer attached--the digitizer is the soft part on top of the LCD that records stylus input.

To get your old LCD out, follow the steps of this tutorial to the last one (picture 10), and then flip over the screen part, disconnect the ribbon at the bottom, and peel off the adhesive that binds the ribbon/film to the back of the LCD. Snap the new LCD back into the casing, then reattach the ribbon/film (using super glue if necessary--great suggestion!), reconnect the ribbon, then reassemble everything else as noted in the tutorial. I tend to be fairly conservative when it comes to removing tape inside of electronics, so I managed to get my phone apart without disconnecting the second ribbon mentioned in the tut (and since I wasn't changing the housing, this worked just fine).

Finally, this may be of help to anyone who takes apart their 8525, either to switch the housing or to replace the LCD. About halfway through taking my phone apart, I noticed a small, black rubber item that wasn't on my desk when I started (see attached image if you're interested). It took a couple hours to figure out where it came from, but I finally located it. (It's actually not in the tutorial pictures either.) The item goes below and to the left of the mini USB port in the top left of picture 5 (directly above the first "i" in FLiPinoy9oNe6), and covers the corresponding metal piece in the top right of picture 5 (the long vertical piece directly above the "N" in FLiPinoy9oNe6). The hole at the bottom of the item lines up with the hole in the bottom of the phone housing between the mini USB port and the reset button. While I'm not positive, I assume that this is the mic housing, and I'm guessing the rubber item helps keep phone noise out of your calls.

Best of luck, and have fun!

PS The 14.6 kb attachment limit is pretty, well, limiting, so I apologize for the lack of context with this image. The black rubber item is pretty small--a little less than 1 cm long, and about .5 cm wide.

that black rubber thing threw me off, took me like an hour and a half to find out where it came from the first time i took the phone apart

All right, one other thing I should probably mention here. The first time I fired up my phone after replacing the LCD, the new screen didn't work--it lit up, but it didn't display anything and wouldn't respond to the stylus. I opened the phone back up and found the problem.

At the top left of picture 9 in the tutorial, you can where the ribbon from the phone connects to the LCD. Underneath the yellow translucent tape, you can see a black piece of plastic running the length of the connection. This secures the ribbon and needs to be PLACED DOWN on the ribbon. When you attach the new display, secure the ribbon by lowering this black piece, and then you can replace the yellow translucent tape.

Chances are you're smarter than me and already knew this, but I thought I'd save you some time just in case.

wow! Ive been gone for a bit and want to thank u guys for adding to the tutorial. Didnt realize the small details would affect anything so props to u for adding to it. Has anyone had luck on the front camera yet? Where are all these housing swaps? I know of at least a couple people that purchased the housing thru cnn.cn so lets see some pics.

BIGG PROBLEM.. my back camera isnt working now at all.. its def. plugged in but whenever i hit the camera button it says Unable to start camera. Camera device is in used. PLEASE HELPPP

Posted by: realslimb

lol its fine now.. just had to let the camera sit in it for a little bit

Posted by: 3DPiper

I'd love to add a front camera.. Theres a couple of programs out there that lets you use your 8525 as a webcam, would be great to do it while you can see the screen..

Is the only place to get a VGA front camera from another TyTN?

I wonder if you could just make a mini periscope and use the 2M camera with the periscope peeking over the top at you (hey, they make a telephoto lens!)?

yo. i found this awesome tutorial after i had already swapped out my housing! kind of sucks because the credit card trick is cool. i used a guitar pick and it worked ok. credit card would have been easier. anyway...after i put the last screw back in i realized i have a problem... my phone only works on speaker now! people can hear me talking but i can't hear them until i hit speaker. obviously i did something stupid. i took it back apart but can't figure out what i did wrong. any advice, pinoy? filipinos love us some phones and it looks like you have taken apart a few. holla!

Posted by: dgr81

Just wanted to say thanks to the OP for posting the tutorial. I changed my housing earlier this afternoon and everything worked out fine

Posted by: totalfor

Great Post! I found it after my 8525 got under my rocker recliner. I had to do a total screen and housing replacement so I thought I would share my experience. Before you attempt this I would download the Service Manuel that is on another post, it helps to see how the pro's do it. The first thing I ran into was when I ordered the screen from cn the digitizer is included, but the website doesn't tell you that. Secondly watch out for the rubber piece that is by the microphone, it will fall out easily, thankfully I was watching when it fell out. Thirdly, carefully replace all the ribbon connections when doing a screen replacement. After the 1st and 2nd attempt of putting everything back together all I got was the dreaded white screen. On the 3rd attempt of I got it right and everything works. The key was getting the connection with the 2 tiny screws completly level. Overall it was not as hard as I imagined it would be, just make sure you have the right tools. Hope this helps.

Posted by: projectpaki

ok i just put on my black housing but it seems the touch screen is off, and i get this red tint sometimes but switching to landscape then back to portrait corrects it. however, i cant get to my scrollbar on the right, maybe the screen isnt aligned or maybe its the case it does feel weird help!! id hate to take it apart again i already lost one nail (the one underneath the void sticker).

Posted by: projectpaki

oh and the sound too, lilmike how did you fix that problem?

Posted by: projectpaki

ok fixed the alignment, red tint i could live with... but sound? help please!

Posted by: yaro1

This is a great guide. My 8525 decided it was feeling a little hot a few weeks ago and decided to go for a swim with me, and I had to take it apart to let it try. (It survived). I can't tell you the trauma the phone went through with me assembling/disassembling the phone countless times without this guide (there are quite a few cosmetic blemishes from the screwdriver), yet it survived! Amazing phone! The craftsmanship of this phone is great!

I can't wait for the Tilt though...

Posted by: ron808

Do you guys know how to fix/ connect the phone speaker back?

I dropped it and it lost all its sounds.

To fix your speaker, download the service manual here, it has dismantling instructions:

I finally opened it.

Voided the warranty (I tried removing it with an exacto knife but my hands are too shifty I sliced it.) Don't care much about the warranty as I'm planning on getting the 8925 soon plus my unit is TyTn not 8525. I'm in the US and I have to send it overseas for repair. Uhmmm, no thanks to that one.

I have to snap back the speaker connection. whew.

It's back to its superb performance.

Posted by: [DT]

Howdy Folks!

I've had a 8525 for several months, really like it, running the WM6 ROMs now.

Anyway, the screen got scratched, and from what I could read the digitizer was the outer part of the display system. So I ordered a replacement from Fleabay (finally got here from Hong Kong after 2 weeks). Cheap, with tools it was like $20 shipped.

Anyway, I followed the 8525 disassembly guides (the video and all the printed material), got everything apart down to the LCD.

OK, so what the heck? While the digitizer looks to be the correct size (and have the correct connection) how in the world is it attached to the LCD panel? Is this not a serviceable part? Strange that several people sell this.

Any ideas? Hahaha, my phone looks pathetic right now. I mean at worst case I can put it back together, and I'm out $20 (I think it was $18 actually).

Does the digitizer separate from the LCD assembly?

Much thanks in advance to anyone with incite into this mystery

1) So No Soldering Has to be Done for the Installation Of the Front Camera As far as the Ribbion is Concerned ?

2) Do I need firmware or a Special Rom for the Front Camera to Work Properly or is it Just Plug and Play on the Phone ?

I bought the Case From CNN.cn And I got the Front Camera off Ebay(Y198 Int 3G camera for HTC Tytn) ... I will Def. post back with my success or Horror Story... I"m Actually gonna take it to a Local Phone repair shop for the Installion in L.I. NY. Only Charging me $35 so WISH ME LUCK !

More Questions.... Did you Get the Front Camera to Actually Work after All this Modding or you got the Camera just to cover the hole ?

I notice where the Cam is suppose to go on the Phone but Does the Cam come With a Ribbion for you to COnnect it to the Circuit Board ? Cause in these pix from Ebay the Camera doesn't have a Ribbion attached to it...

The copper ribbon is on there. I just ordered another four from ebay. All you have to do is put it in the tray and put the flap down, the ribbon will snap right in. Definately plug but maybe not so much play. I havent found a relieable source for the front cam to work properly. It activates the cam but doesnt take pictures at the correct angle. You'll see what I mean once you have it installe an activated. Good luck, let me know how it goes

I wonder if this has possibility for the new Tilt that lacks a camera too.

Where can I find this housing at? I dropped my 8525 on concrete the other day and now it's all beat up.

I see what you mean I Used Cool Camera to use the front Camera to Take a picture but it's at a 90 degree Angle instead of Up right. I spoke to Developers of Cool Camera and they said they are aware of the problem and are working on it... That was a few moonths ago so I wouldn't hold my breath lol But the Front Camera Looks F*in SWEET !

hey i dropped my phone (fairly regularly, i'm in college) and now the sound doesn't work. if i pop open the case do you think i'd find the audio chip (i'm thinking something that was soldered is no longer) and i'm not a complete noob, i work on circuitry in school, i've just never opened up my 500 dollar phone. i'm sure you guys can understand my angst.

To fix your speaker, download the service manual here, it has dismantling instructions:

And here’s another pictorial guide (text in Russian but pics are clear):

Or here:

V-did, it's easier than you think, crack it open and fix those speakers. Just don't try replacing them with some 18" cerwin vega woofers.

Thanks so much!
Just one question, I broke it open, and i see the speaker and i can't tell if something is wrong with the speaker or not, is there something someone can look at the diagram and tell me anything?

lol i'm gonna disconnect and reconnect the speaker module and see if that works. if not, anyone know where i can buy a replacement speaker?

oh and cnn.cn still doesn't have housings!
anywhere at all to find OEM housings?

thanks!

correction, cnn.cn has the housing now. but if i buy the new keypad will the front camera work? obviously i'd have to buy a front camera too.

Make sure its not just that speaker wire (connection). Thats what happened to mine (and still does) but its very easy if it is. Where you slide your stylus in you'll see the red and white wire. Just make sure that connector is secure (push it in if it isn't).

Hey guys. This thread is great - lots of good info.
My girlfriend's 8525 took a spill a couple weeks back and cracked the screen. I suggested just buying a replacement screen and she found on on ebay. She went ahead & tried installing it herself with the instructions that came with the screen, and managed to get it semi-working, but now the screen isn't backlit (you can barely see that the image is on the screen if you hold it at the right angle). Any suggestions?

Yeah I took a tilt apart and the same thing under the housing. has the port for the camera and all just like the 8525. Just need to find the front housing. I believe the same camera lense can work as well.

Posted by: BombaMyte

Let me know if that same front cam that you got for the 8525 will work on the Tilt as well. I was thinking about doing a re-house but having a black hole where the cam should be turns me away. Plus I can't find the one for the Kaiser anyways.
