Software Upgrade:
I want to upgrade my SW version i downloaded off blackberry.com I have the t-mobile 8100 and im getting it unlocked(I already asked for the code) But i was wondering if i flash it will it to t-mobile will lock to Cingular? Also Can the Red Pearls SW version be okay on the black pearl? or is it totally different?

Is there a Difference from T-mobile Pearl vs Cingular Pearl?

I tried looking at the difference but im thinking only software is different limiting the PTT,Maps etc...?

Physical Unbranding:

Also i want to try the suger trick to remove the branding will it mess up the plasitc or will it be clear and not noticable at all like the MDA?

Answer to question #1:

Once your Pearl is unlocked, it will not matter what firmware you use as it will remain unlocked. I have an unlocked Rogers 8100 and am using the newest european TMO (Italian, English language) firmware without issues. It did not lock the phone nor will any firmware you use. Red vs. Black Pearl = no difference as far as firmware goes.

Answer to question #2:

Yeah, that's pretty much it. You are correct with that.

As far as question 3 goes, I have no idea about that.

Thank you for the reply. I havent got it unlocked yet but i will flash it right now with the Cingular Red pearl flash from blackberry. Id much rather have the at&t logo then the t-mobile logo when i dont have t-mobile

Which logo - the startup logo? That can't be changed.

Posted by: CoRupT

Well the sw should contain all the new logos right? basically making it a full fledged at&t phone?

The splash screen cannot be changed as it's hard coded into the device, loading the Cingular (at&t) OS onto your handheld won't change the fact that the splash screen will read T-Mobile.

Can you please explain this "sugar trick" ? Thank you.

Hi,

I have a Rogers unlocked. You mentioned that you went to european TMO. Could you tell me if it is really worth the change. What are the gains. The Rogers one seems to me as very stable. I have had the phone for three weeks.

Thanks,

The sugar trick is to tape off the area of the phone and get a sugar cube and rub the area where you want to take off the paint/logo. It can be used to take out the t-mobile logos, cingular logos, the myfavs logo.

Right now i have a peice of black vynl that is covering the logos but i want to get rid of it permantly but not to damage the plastic.

(I did this with the T-mobile and it left damage because of a clear coat over the logo.)

Well, there are additional themes that become available with that firmware. Also, the background auto light control can be disabled which makes the screen look nicer, but that will likely eat additional battery power. It is nice to have that choice though. Bottom line, go with what best works for you. If the Rogers firmware works for you, then don't fix something that works for you.

I tried the cingular firmware but there was absolutly no change what so ever

Posted by: briareus

That's what people were trying to tell you. A new OS load won't change the logo on the splash screens -- nothing will.

Posted by: CoRupT

NO I mean like menu logos etc... Well i basically wanted the cingular settings for MMS,Text, internet etc.. I understand about the splash logo

When did the T-Mo Pearls get a MyFaves logo? Mine doesn't have one (yay!)

If you are using Cingular service, then via a log-in through BIS you can send service books to your BB and that will give you all necessary settings.

How do i use the OTA downloaders when it keeps opening the blackberry browser instead of Opera?

Posted by: CoRupT

Anyway to set OperaMini as the default browser so i can install OTA themes?

Is it even possible to change the icons on the homescreen? Like right now there is 3 unused icons like set up and blackberry messenger.

Anyway to clear the recent call list with one button? not by deleting one by one?

Updating the OS on a BlackBerry will not unlock a locked BlackBerry. If you have a BlackBerry that's already unlocked and update or downgrade the OS it will not re-lock.
