I had heard a rumor that the 8525 will be able to be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6. Is this true? And when will PTT functionality become a reality?

Yes the 8525 will eventually receive an official WM6 ROM, which will include enabled PTT. However, PTT may be supported in a WM5 update even before the WM6 update occurs. There are "unofficial official" versions of WM6 and WM5 w/PTT, heck even just a PTT enabling hack floating around already.

There are no official versions of WM6 available, all the ones on XDA are cooked by individuals there. However, the official wm5 ATT upgrade that enables PTT is available there. I've run it and it's very good, but I like WM6 much better so I went back to it.

I doubt that as the new updated ROM was just released. If it took them that long to release that update you can probably easily assume that a WM6 update (which hasnt been released pubicly by any carrier currently) wont be released by AT&T this summer.

I would would say by the end of the year if I was a bettin man.

i dunno... i mean the "official" announcement for this ROM was the 25th, as a spacific target date... I would still think that since this release was only off by a few days, the WM6 upgrade is slated for end of summer release, so i'm looking at end of summer release... just my thoughts
