if I use a backup utility like spbbackup and then install the ROM update, will I be able to reinstall my settings/programs using the backup utility or will I have to reinstall all of the apps and settings individually?

Thanks

Most backup utilities do not work properly when you're doing an OS upgrade (even for a minor revision). You may ended up screwed your phone settings and has to do a hard reset. This depends on how much the OS has changed.

SPB website specifically states that backup does not support any ROM update. That being said:
I updated today from the xda ROM update vers. 2.06. I did not want to invest the time to reinstall everything so I tried running SPB backup. I was pleasantly surprised. All programs, add-ons, screen savers, mail, etc. were present and loaded and run flawlessly. But the biggest surprise was that at bootloader, it reads vers. 2.15, but going to settings I have the following:
ROM vers. 2.06.502.3 (which is what I loaded from xda.)
ROM date 03/29/07 (which is dated ten days before the official Cingy release & six weeks after xda)
Radio ver. 1.40.30.00 (same as new official release)
Protocol vers. 32.73.7020.16H (also same as new release).
So, bottom line is that you can certainly try running SPB backup restore. You may not get all the features of the new 2.15 (I am missing several including AT&T music), but if it works, you will save yourself several hours of reloading programs. If it doesn't, you have lost five minutes and can do a hard reset and start from scratch with 2.15

Thank you. I will give it a shot!
