Hi,
I read that XV6700 thread, but im still unclear. Sorry.
Can someone tell me if a Data Plan for the XV6700 is required. Is there no way that I can use the phone without it? If I dont get it, will I be able to text message? I dont care about PIX messaging.
Will I be able to check my mail through Outlook? on just Wi-Fi.
Please let me know thanks.

a data plan is not requird...you can get normal phone service and even add the unlimited texting service and just use those features like you would a normal phone. You'd only be able to use WiFi to access the internet otherwise you'd get charged on a per-bandwidth basis by verizon (not cheap)!

You can check your email through the Windows Mobile "Outlook" client but, yes -- you will have to be within rage of a Wi-Fi network. I've also had some success using dialup (with a third-party ISP) which will, of course, work from almost any location. Let me know if you need help setting it up.
The data plan is nice (I had it for a month on my XV6700), but it's not worth the $50/mo.

i'm curious about your dial up idea too..

I use Road Runner at home for Internet access, and they provide every subscriber with a free dial-up account. If you happen to be a subscriber, you can find access numbers here. If not, there are many cheap dial-up providers out there.
From there, it's an easy process to add a dial-up connection to the XV6700 (or any Windows Mobile phone, for that matter):
*Start > Settings > Connections > Connections icon
*Add a new modem connection
*Name the connection and choose Cellular Line
*etc....
There are some problems with this method. First, you need a dial-up ISP. Secondly, you will be using your minutes just as if you were making a phone call. Also, the connection is pretty sluggish (hey, it is dial-up)... Another thing I should point out is that I haven't been able to get this connection to work in all areas. Interestingly enough, it works fine in rural eastern Ohio but, not at all in downtown Columbus. Go figure...
